Same thing was happening in Cornwall before I left 8 years ago, now I live in France and its the complete reverse in my little town, more and more shops open, some very specialist, like jukeboxes ceramic art works, shops where you never ever see any customers.
I think it has a lot to do with shop rents and small business support but it makes a huge difference to the feel of the place and a pleasure just to wander around even just window shopping.

As a ex shop keeper the is only one real cause of the demise of our traditional High Streets.... " YOU " are to blame. For over the past 40yrs the buying habits of the general public have seen them abandon small shops in favour of big supermarkets and online shopping. Small shops cannot afford to stay open just for your nostalgic convenience when it suits you to walk past them.

you are so right, all this nostalgic hand wringing, then off home to to be in time for the online groceries delivery!

@@jeremyfoster6942 lol... I am a total hypocrite of course. I also now buy online after swearing I would never do it after I had to close my butchers shop while blaming the Internet/supermarkets.

@@hiramabiff2017 it's the way highstreets are changing, you can't argue with the fact that shopping from home is way more convenient , things can't stay unchanged for generations.

Don't blame the consumer because you didn't offer what they needed.

The same thing in The US. San Fran, Seattle, Portland Los Angeles etc. Vacant stores everywhere. Entire streets, block after block is empty.
Be it from Covid, drugs, theft... whatever it is, it's all at one all over the place.
    Closed businesses EVERYWHERE

three towns near me are are going the same in the last 10 years the closest town it has been supermarkets that have taken over losing the high street small shops not only that is the increased number of red coat traffic wardens constantly booking more and more drivers.

Looks shockingly similar to the main street through the town near me, everything shutting down,
but I can't be surprised, I never went in any of them and never saw anyone else go in them either.

This is the result of online shopping; you order and a few days later there's a ding dong and it's there. And most of the time it's cheaper than going to the town centre and picking one up in the supermarket. And you don't know to carry it home on the bus..

Online shopping and council mismanagement hasn't helped how much council tax do they get from an empty shop.

Utter crap. This has far less to do with migrants and far more to do with changes in the economy and shopping habits.
The only reason you see more migrants in places like this is because it's a poor area where they can afford the rent.

Christ! - you know things are bad when the Charity Shops close down.
Google street view gives a year by year snap-shot of the High Street going to Hell, it wasn't too bad back in 2009 but just after that the rot started.

There is quite a thriving cannabis trade behind those shops on the High Street. The police have just shut one down at the old bingo hall and arrested two men.
