Really interesting that you preferred these to the LCD4, which I still think does the same if not higher resolution treble, but a bit darker. My X I tested had much more odd and off-timbre mids than the other LCDs I've heard including the 4. However obviously the 4 is ridiculously expensive though

I was tempted by an open box LCD-X for $900 a couple of months ago while I was actually looking for a closed back planar to use at work and at home. I pulled the trigger on the LCD-2 Closed-Back even though I could not find any decent reviews online. I thought I would have the buyer's remorse for buying a headphone that costs more than my HTC Vive + accessories. Well I did up until I put them on an start going thru my flac library with a creepy smile on my face. I do think that spending $900 on a headphone is financially irresponsible (that's why I ordered a QUESTYLE CMA400I). Yep, I think I drunk the audiophile koolaid, but I'm definitely not embracing the cable religion. I ordered $30 worth of part to build a balanced XLR cable. I think I drifted a little bit. I was not this high when I started typing. Back to the LCD 2 closed back, I would love to hear what the reviewers have to say about it.

Man, that is exactly what I think about my LCD-X. You nailed it!
Quick question: From the the video, it looks like the sides of the cups on yours is smooth in texture (like the MX4) and not slightly rough in texture like mine (and like the LCD-2 in aluminum). Is that accurate? Yours have the older headband like mine though... I wonder if they changed that finish before the headband change.

Great review, Josh. I recommend the FiiO Q1 mkII over the Micca Origen line. In a direct comparison, the Q1 mkII was significantly better-sounding than the Micca Origen + (wider soundstage and more detailed). The FiiO Q1 mkII is also portable (battery-powered, slim design), plug-and-play with iOS devices, has a 2.5mm balanced-out (more power, better channels separation), and is $10 cheaper than the Origen. The only downside compared to the Origen G2 is that it doesn't have an optical in/out.

When I got it and listened to it, I was immediately impressed. However, with time goes on and comparison to my Sony Z1R, and Stax Limited 300, I do notice lcdx’s two noticeable weakness:1, extremely small soundstage, which reminds me of Shure KSE ‘s tiny sound stage that I used to own; 2, the sound sig feels fabricated too much in a way that feels good at first sight but feels fake with time goes on. The details are definitely not that clear and could be a lil muddy compared to my other high end cans. I’m amazed by how natural Z1R is.

So my library has mainly stuff like, Arena, Devin Townsend, Dream Theater, Big Big Train, Floyd, Evergrey, Genesis, Haken, Mystery, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Vanden Plas, Symphony X, Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, Guthrie Govan, Nili Brosh, Tony MacAlpine etc., etc. I know for the price you enjoyed the LCD-X. Would you say that these will be a great fit the majority of my music? Most of my listening is done via decent IEM's, but I'm interested in a £1,000 set of open headphones to run from my decent A&K player. Cheers, keep up the good work...

It has two main issue, at least the one I had: weight is a minor gripe, the major one is terrible resolution/detail retrieval, compared to others at its price point. It sounds fine on its own, but when directly compared to something like the HD800 it just sounds muffled/slow/lacking in detail.

I bought the LCD-X and after plugging them into my Headphone Amplifier, I could hear a humming sound when touching the metal rims of the cups with my fingers. The humming was even louder when touching the silver screws on each side. It was more significant on the left cup than on the right. I could even hear humming when touching the rods. The humming would stop after touching the chassis of the connected amplifier which suggests a ground loop issue. The demo version i subsequently tried in the audio retail store had the same problem but fainter. I returned them for a full refund a day later.

  • @youmongrel

I bought these for 900 open box from Amazon. They were amazing of course, but IMO not worth 4x the price of M1060s with DMS' simple upgrades (including really good ZMF pads). They're louder by default but that's about it, not much more detail played through a Schiit stack (or straight from iPhone). There were a number of times I thought "wow I never noticed sound x before!" then played the same part through the Monoliths and yeah, in fact the sound was there too. Clearly my ears were trying to justify the investment... I compared them both hard for about 5 solid hours on many genres. Mostly though I returned them because they were annoying to wear, they're so heavy that you can't move your head forward or back at all without them trying to burrow to the Earth's core. And mine even had the modern headband, which was truly comfortable but didn't help stability. To me, that IS the compromise that killed the deal, I can't have a drink and just relax in my comfortable chair; my posture must accommodate THEM instead of the other way around.

Everything you say is valid, but just want to add my worthless opinion. Like you, I had the m1060s, LCD-X and schiit stack. I absolutely HATED the LCD-X on my schiit stack. While it's true that these things can run off anything, there was something the schiit dac was doing to these headphones that just made them sound really bad to my ears. I almost considered returning them as well until I upgraded to an audio-gd setup and then ended up giving my m1060s away to a family relative instead.
While these can be powered by everything, there was just something weird the schiit stack was doing to these headphones, to the point of where I enjoyed listening to them off a phone more than that setup. Definitely wouldn't recommend using them with a schiit stack.

    • @youmongrel
      @youmongrel 5 лет назад +2

Li that's a totally valid observation. I too compared both running from my music-dedicated iPhone 6S on a the straight headphone jack, running FLACS from the VOX app while sitting here at my desk doing work. Again, the X was louder by nature but the quality of that audio difference was minimal. I didn't mention that since some people may not know that both headphones have equally low power requirements. I can't say my experience was the same as yours though - neither pair NEEDS the amp, but I didn't notice any sort of degradation while using it. YMMV

Awesome well done review. I’m deciding between this LCD-X vs HD800S ($1200 vs $1500). One MAJOR major advantage to the Audeze is I won’t have to “fix” it by putting it on an expensive tube amp like you need for the Senn. It’s soundstage compared to the Senn is my only concern. I may not need a massive concert hall soundstage, but I also don’t want it to sound like everything is inside my head

@@JoshuaValour It would be for FLAC or TIDAL listening, and gaming. Another thing I wanted to mention, my music tastes are not classical, not jazz, not live. I like a rich, lively, solid bass tone, moving, musical, makes you bop your head or tap your feet without realizing. HD800S are known for the huge soundstage, clarity, midrange. They're lean in the low end, analytical'ish, but not as bad as HD800. Never heard a planar, but some HUGE things that are standing out to me are:
LCD-X is so easy to drive vs the HD800S isn't. 20ohm vs 300ohm and HD800S requires hours and hours of research trying to find a good amp to put them on. High end tube amps to bring out more syrup, more low end and cut down on some of it's bright high end. So HD800S requires even more money spent to "fix" it. BUT, it's the holy grail of soundstage. I like soundstage as well, but I don't need to have a sound of me on a 50 yard line, and I'm hearing sounds from all over the stadium. I'm fine with standing in the middle of a smaller nightclub and hearing things all around me still, but not as huge as a stadium.
Meaning, I just don't want the LCD-X to sound like there's very little soundstage, just to have more bass. You say the LCD-X isn't a very wide, but this is subjective. HD800S is maybe TOO wide? So I'm wondering if you've heard HD800S (updated model) and if you can estimate how wide the LCD-X soundstage is if you had to attach a distance on it. Sound like it's 100ft wide, 200ft? vs HD800S's..........I dunno 500ft wide?

Pretty decent review but I think it'll be a disservice to the public to not mention that the LCD-X varies so much unit to unit at least pre 2016 models. Inner fidelity's are definitely old and does not represent every unit out there. Maybe your current pair sounds good but mine sounded like total garbage. Something you missed out and imo was an important point to mention. Apparently post 2016 they have fixed the Qc issues and have successfully standardised the sound but there are still some mild variations. Personally I don't think the LCD-X is a good headphone and would call it rubbish in most cases when compared to cheaper stuff like HD800 and Elex. The tonality is wack and requires a lot of EQ to fix those flaws. But I do agree that they image and resolves well but at that price it's just not enough.

Especially when the headphones can cost thousand to several thousand dollars per pair. There is a place holder in RUclips that could alleviate the ambiguity. It is called in the RUclips Channel's "About" section. Does anything matter anymore ? Perhaps it is an innocent oversight. If so, it would be nice to have a look at a included "About" section.
