      Actually it doesn't work everywhere. For example while renaming files. Windows explorer inserts some rectangle character that represents this combo. I think I've seen this somewhere else too, but I can't recall it now. And this CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER thing - it's gonna be my new favourite, thanks for that.

      There is a lot of great shortcuts with Ctrl and Shift. For example if you want to select a text from beginning of the file to where the cursor is just press Ctrl+Shift+Home. This also works with End, Page Up, Page Down, Up arrow, Down arrow. Pretty useful when working with documents, code or consoles.

    I use CTRL + W all the time to close tabs in my browser of choice, or a MMB press even more so instead of CTRL + F4.

    • @Barnacules
      @Barnacules  4 года назад +3

      CTRL + F4 works across all multiple document interfaces in any program which is what I like. Browsers always act a little different though, notice how they use F11 for full screen while everything else standardizes on ALT-ENTER. It's strange 🤔

    • @marble_wraith
      @marble_wraith 4 года назад +3

      @@Barnacules They do different things. Alt + f4 is closing a program. Ctrl + W is closing a tab within focused program.
      Ctrl+ W is not just browsers, it also works in VScode, MSoffice / LibreOffice, Krita, MS terminal, inkscape, most adobe products (IIRC).
      Also as a continuation to this video perhaps it'd be interesting to discuss how to rebind / macro keys?
      Example: Alt + f4 is the OG way of doin things for sure. But unless you're using a compact form factor keyboard it's not really accessible with only 1 hand. What if you rebind it to Alt + ~ 😁

    • @goodwinhull2751
      @goodwinhull2751 4 года назад +1

      @@marble_wraith Jerry was talking about Ctrl+F4 (close tab), not Alt+F4 (close window).
      Anyway, Ctrl+W often closes a tab, but not always, whereas Ctrl+F4 usually works in either case. For example, Ctrl+W does not close a tab in Visual Studio (proper) or IntelliJ IDE, but Ctrl+F4 does.

    • @MrJozza65
      @MrJozza65 4 года назад +1

      I've used CTRL+W for a long time to close tabs, but it doesn't work in SQL Enterprise Manager or whatever that's called these days. Going to give the CTRL+F4 a try when I'm working tomorrow, I'm excited 🤓

    • @AndyCalderbank
      @AndyCalderbank 4 года назад

      @@marble_wraith Thumb on alt, middle finger f4, not too bothered about taking my hand away from the home keys to do that as I'm closing the program anyway.
      What the two previous posters were referring to is Ctrl+F4, not Alt, which is generally the same function as Ctrl+W, Ctrl+F4 makes more sense for me as I see it as Alt+Tab -> Ctrl+Tab, Alt+F4 -> Ctrl+F4

    There is one people don't know about because you're so used to for years to click around is (I know it's not specific to Windows) :
    *ALT + TAB*
    when you are on a form, and you want to go to the next field, you use TAB. And to go to the previous field, *ALT+TAB*
    (in excel, you can have many cells selected and move the active one WITHOUT losing the selection your selection with TAB and ALT+TAB instead of using the arrow keys).
    Another one useful with internet browsers is : *CTRL+TAB* - it selects the next tab (useful when you have tons of them opened), and to go back in the list : *CTRL+SHIFT+TAB*

Try it, open FF or Chrome and hit ALT + D.

    5:35 thanks for that one, and yes please make more, i often watch RUclips on my TV and i use a wireless keyboard with a trackpad, so keyboard shortcuts are a godsend, my most often used one (as you can guess) is Ctrl+W (close tab), i also recently learned of Ctrl+PgDn or Up to move between open tabs and Ctrl+1 to 9 to jump to a tab, i usually have way more than 9 tabs, so in that case Ctrl+9 takes you to the last tab, which is one of the only ways to get to it if you have more tabs open than your screen can handle, so it's super useful.

    one other quick tip for the Alt+F4 command (or Fn+Alt+F4 if your laptop's function keys default to the other option that is on the function which you can choose to enable that or not in your laptop's BIOS) that if you're on the desktop you can press it to open up a dialogue box to allow you to shut down, hibernate (if you have that enabled which I hope you don't because it's kinda dumb for the newer PCs), sleep, or restart in a dropdown box. nice little way to shut down if you don't feel like going to the start menu and hitting the power options button and hitting one that you want. that ability has been in windows forever.

    Didn't know that Ctrl+F4 exists but Ctrl+W is easier to use for me. Some additional ones: Ctrl+N - new window, Ctrl+Shift+W - close all tabs at once, Ctrl+T - new tab, Ctrl+Shift+T -- return closed tab. ALso Ctrl+Y - opposite of Ctrl+Z. For text edditing also extremely useful: Shift+arrows - select by single letters or cursor position within rows, Shift+Home or +End - select entire row and Ctrl+Home or +End - go to beginning or end from current position (with Shift also selects).

    I use _ctrl + shift + N_ to create new folders... even when saving something, which makes it super quick to organize. While at organizing, i also use _F2_ to rename files and _ctrl + A_ to select all. Another useful shortcut, usually when i want to find a file in file manager or a country in a dropdown menu or a taks in the task manager, _just press a letter on the keyboard_ and it will only cycle through the items that start with that letter. Also one i use is in alt + tab view, press _alt + shift + tab_ to go backwards through the alt tab menu, it helps when you have a ton of windows open.

    I know about virtual desktops and use them all the time! Sadly I only found out about them when I moved to Windows 10. Though I expect that's when a lot of people started using them. Along with being handy for organization, they are another useful feature for when you want things open that you might want to quickly hide since you can use Ctrl+Win+Left/Right, as you mentioned. This has the added benefit of allowing you to have other programs, or a blank desktop, quickly available so you can work on other things unfettered if the situation calls for it.
    Another nice feature with virtual desktops is that you can transfer windows between them by simply hitting Win+Tab, then dragging any window over a different desktop across the top! You can also have specific windows or programs that show up across all desktops by hitting Win+Tab and right-clicking on any window. This will give you a menu to close, snap left or right, but most importantly to show either this one window, or all windows from this app, on all desktops. Super handy when you have something like... a browser or code editor that you use all the time but like using virtual desktops to organize other windows for specific purposes.
    One of my favourite shortcuts that wasn't mentioned is Ctrl+W. Since it closes tabs in tabbed windows, but also closes some windows (Explorer being the one I use it on most commonly) and is easy to hit, it's become a very common one for me. I notice this one is mentioned in another comment. And yes, it's not nearly as consistent for closing windows (mostly used for closing tabs) but I also find it is nice for that reason. It seems to most commonly work on programs that are used more disposably (again, thinking of Explorer) that I'm always opening and closing, while not accidentally closing a lot of windows that are more permanent. All about preferences and use cases, I suppose.
