  • Mega Manufacturing: Sany Excavator Factory | 4K Engineering Documentary
    One of the largest and most modern excavator factories in the world. Every ten minutes, a new high-tech monster rolls off the assembly line in China.
    Lingang, China. Home to one of the largest and most modern excavator factory in the world! 1000 square meters of production area, equipped with high-tech machines of the latest generation. By this means China's market leader Sany wants to become the number one in the world!
    For half a billion euros, the construction machinery giant has built the mega factory. Now 1,600 specialists ensure a breathtaking output: theoretically every ten minutes a new excavator can roll off the production line! In order to achieve the enormous number of strokes, the huge production halls are equipped with the latest generation of robots. They process up to 250 tons of steel every day. In some areas the robots have completely taken over the production of the excavators. In the state-of-the-art welding plant, for example, twenty-four workers were replaced by thirty-two robots. They do the work in half the time. And this is not the only advantage: they are more precise, safer and much more cost-effective in the long-run.
    Sanys top-seller in the mid-range class: the excavator SY215. Its price: one hundred and ten thousand euros. This makes it cheaper than any competitor model from Europe or United States. Its most spectacular feature: a blackbox that sends all of the recorded vehicle-data to the control centre in China. In real-time. The Chinese produce the twenty-three ton monster in just twenty-four working hours. The specialists have to work under extreme time pressure. This is also the case at the so-called "marriage section" - where the heavily swaying, twelve-tonne upper part has to be moved with millimetre precision onto the narrow slewing ring. The specialists also have only ten minutes at this station. So that Sany can deliver excavators at record speed - on the way to becoming the world market leader.

    It has always been this way since the industrial revolution started. In publishing (typesetters), in manufacturing (obviously) too many subjects to pick (assembly lines, then robots), in transportation (put livery stables right out of business), in offices (computers, printers)etc., etc. Try to find a career that automation will at least be delayed, (plumbing, electrical, carpentry) but even there manufacturing will largely take over. But maintenance should still be there for a long time.

    All that high-tech assembly equipment and they can't stop it from swinging during the marriage????
    It can be operated from anywhere in the world.... Can you imagine the kind of damage that could be done with an excavator? Pay your bill or we destroy your project. The military is taking over all the excavators that they have in your country.
    Just imagine the chaos and damage that could be done in just 10 minutes.
    That's scary enough to me to want to install a remote communications Kill switch that is also automatic should the equipment start to operate without local approval.

    I would have never imagined even the global need of excavators to be in the tens of thousands. I was under the impression that an excavator working moderate loads and tasks would last quite a long time (like 20 years if maintained) and still be cost-effective. Am I wrong here? I just can't imagine the need for so many new machines but clearly this company wouldn't be able to produce so many unless there is a demand for such quantities.
    The paint operation was also a surprise. At first, I was wondering where the paint robots were and then to learn that they tried them but went back to human painters because the robots couldn't compensate for the article swinging in it's rigging while being painted. What??!! Sounds to me like a simple adjustment of the rigging would have solved that problem and not abandoning the automated process completely! I was also surprised not to see powder coating being employed here. I am guessing that the mere size of the items painted may be the reason for this because the size of the oven needed to bake on the powder would be enormous. Might there be other reasons for the use of conventional painting here? I'm still assuming this is an epoxy paint at least? I would imagine fast-drying paint is key here too in the time frame of the manufacture. Any thoughts on this?

      The base paint is most of the time an epoxy paint, the black paint can be a quick drying alkyd/bituminous/PU modified paint.
      As you see, all this paints come at half the price of powder coatings and imagining the volume, most manufacturers don't go for powder coatings, other than in specific applications like engine exhaust, scr etc . And moreover, if we change some process or buy new machines, we have to calculate roi and new report suggesting advantages and disadvantages of process/machine, its never easy to convince the management. If there is some quality issues, they might cut some slack.
      Painting automation in my experience have not given repeatability(the same results in multiple scenarios), that's why I guess, they have discarded robots.

    • @Matthew-ob9ml
      @Matthew-ob9ml 4 года назад +1

      Yeah I think the real reason was because the firetrucks were often custom or mildly different designs from one truck to another. That means you're either wasting time constantly reprogramming a robotic welder or having a person do it. For the purpose of the fire truck process, a human technically would be more accurate than reprogramming a robot and hoping it's the correct parameters for each different design compared to programming the robot to do the same exact thing and perfecting it over thousands of the same design. So technically more accurate in that specific scenario.
