  • Replacing the leaking Power Steering pump on the 2009 BMW 650i due to the front shaft seal leaking. Not too bad to do, but there will be a lot of Power Steering fluid come out so plan on getting 2 Liters of the CHF-11S to replace it. There's really only one bolt that is difficult, but with just some specific tools (all available at the local cheap tool store or Big Box Hardware store) it will come out easily.

You just made my day! I'm trying to remove and replace the alternator bracket seal on a 2008 BMW 550i. I've got to remove the power steering pump. I did NOT see any videos explaining that 3rd bolt on the back of the power steering pump. And you explained exactly what tool to use to get to the bolt AND how get to it. I'm heading to Har..Frei... NOW. Thanks! I'm subscribed now. 😀

Thanks ! and glad the video helped some 👍. Yep, that 3rd bolt is really hidden back there and has just enough room to sneak a tool in there without having to take a bunch more stuff off to get the pump off. It was a bit annoying to get the bolt back in there, but with some patience and a little wiggling of the pump it went back fine. Thanks for subscribing and all the best ! Steve

Thanks man ! I do have fun working on these cars when they need it. It interesting to try to determine the simplest way to go about something…almost like a working a 3D jigsaw puzzle trying to figure out how to get around BMW’s over complicated designs, lol !
Since these pumps are so expensive, I’ve actually asked a gasket supply company to see if they can source all of the seals to rebuild one just to see if it can be done. Not sure if anyone would ever try to rebuild one themselves since the pulley hub has to be heated with a torch to pop it off, but at least we can see why it is so expensive and feel a bit better about the price of a replacement one. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

Hey steve! I love your videos. They are super informative and helpful. I was wondering if you can help me diagnoise an odd SES light that illuminates at 5k rpms- I have INPA and can send all over at the data, thx.

Just curious, did Lucas rack and steering pinion stop leak work? That's not the name. But I'm going use some in mine

Hello, I’ve used stop leak in some older vehicles to get by until I could replace the seals, but for this car, the power steering pump also provides fluid to the Dynamic Stability System (it’s a dual pump) so I don’t think I would put stop leak in mine. After taking this pump apart, I found that the seal was damaged from small debris in the system so in not sure if even stop leak would have prevented it from leaking.
