I love my Flight TUS Soprano so I was curious about their TUC Concert - thank you for the sound comparison! I'm glad to see that Flight is offering travel ukes with unembellished laminate tops - the candy colored and patterned or engraved travel series ukes were Flight's only options in the past and they're not for everybody. This laminate acacia top looks like a REAL ukulele, very nice!

I agree between soprano and concert, it's impossible to say one is better than the other. They have two distinctly different sounds. I'm actually surprised that they are so different for these models, because that's not always the case between soprano and concert. I would say as a general matter, that if you plan on mostly strumming and like that bright punchy sound, definitely go for the soprano. The concert is the better choice I think for fingerpicking. Or get one of each. Many people do. By the way, I was looking at the amara concert version. Do you think there's a significant difference in tone between the amara and acacia models?
Hi Barry I got the soprano long neck for Christmas 😁 but I agree the concert scale is softer and more depth than the soprano. Flight never fail to disappoint. Very good value. Nothing for me beats my Fireball. Happy new year to you.

My much loved soprano didn't meet with any of the fates described in your video but, with the help of my friends' two year old son, I think I've found its Achilles heel : He is quite a fan of the Syd Barrett song "Effervescing Elephant" and, when his 10 year old brother and I were playing, he would often ask for a performance (although he couldn't get his tongue around the word "effervescing", so he would just shout the word "elephant" over and over again - at least, I hope that this was a request rather than an adverse comment on the amount of weight I've gained over the last year or two). During one of our breaks, he became impatient, picked up my uke and embarked upon his own highly improvised version of the song (which was not without merit). When we started to play again my G string "broke" almost instantly and it was only when I went to change it that I realised what he'd done - his strumming technique involved occasionally grabbing the G and the A string and squeezing them together. In doing so, he'd managed to increase in size of the hole in the slotted bridge so that it would no longer retain the strings (if you look at the plastic on the bridge slots, it is quite thin). 5 minutes and a bit of superglue later we were ready to go again despite my uke having sustained a mortal wound. My only regret is that I'm never going to be good, or famous, enough for Flight to produce a signature edition travel uke in my name, which would have the strings held on by bits of matchstick and superglue . I have no idea how it's currently fairing as I've recently leant it to my friends older son ( they have a takeaway, so during lockdown, I gave him my uke to keep over there instead of having to take his uke to and from home - so, not only do I have a rare customised tus-35 but I've also invented the concept of the non-travelling travel uke, which is probably not so much of rarity this year :-) ). Anyway, I daresay, that it will be up for replacement sometime next year. I don't know whether I'll go for one of the Flight Concert ukes, the Fluke, or, one of the other carbon fibre / plastic ukes that you've reviewed over the last year or two. My thinking, is that, even if the Flight did have a fatal flaw, I'd have to break them at the rate that Pete Townsend used to get through guitars to make up the difference in price between the Flight and something like the Klos Carbon Fibre.

You are absolutely right, our previous bridge construction was sometimes prone to cracking and we have provided a free replacement to anyone who had reported this issue to us, so feel free to reach to us via contact form on our website and we will look into it. In order to improve the bridge stability we have switched to a newer, sturdier bridge construction some time ago and so far we haven't received any reports of it not behaving itself :)
I totally didn't need one of these, because I already have a soprano from this line (and both the soprano and concert Enya Nova U models), but they got me with the kitty print. 😅😅😅

I have one of the painted sopranos and the walnut concert in this model and I love both :) I have more expensive, nicer instruments and still pick these up more. Probably because I don’t have to worry about just letting them sit around and they still sound great. I have put worth clear strings on both and they are lovely :)
Hi Barry I bought a soprano size and after a while put on living water strings, however after a short time the LW strings pulled through the bridge slots damaging them in the process. I think it was because the LW strings are a bit finer in diameter and the knot was a bit small. I refitted Aquila strings and it was ok. Having said all that I am very happy with mine and keep it on our camper van all year and it stands up to the abuse by me and my grandchildren. Thanks again and Happy News Year.
As far as RUclips sound goes, the soprano comes across better to my ears due to the crisper top end. The concert sounds a little muffled by comparison, but that's just the lack of dynamic range on RUclips, I guess. :)
I recently purchased the Flight tus-55 Acacia soprano uke. Has a clean sound but the ring of Acacia. Very good product from Flight and under 75 dollars Canadian. Would recommend their Travel Acacia to anyone looking for an affordable uke.

I have a longneck Surf's Up Flight and love its size and durability and tone yet this Concert body has a richer sound 💝💕. LOL I cannot buy everything, ukes are not like collecting colored pencils 😄.
So the different woods in construction make no difference to the sound? I think the plastic bowl back really made the fluke and flea ukes a lot less difference in sound, from personal experience.
In my view - yes - with these plastic bowl backs the top material difference is much harder to notice in the overall sound - same with the Flea and Fluke. These are laminates too which don't have tone wood tonal characteristics anyway
Bit of an inside-baseball question here, Barry. Does Aquila supply Nylgut strings free to manufacturers (in hopes of garnering future purchases)? Trying to figure out why so many makers equip instruments with strings that have only one thing going for them (they're loud). Happy new year too you and yours.
Don't think they are free, but it would make good sense to get a linkage on future models. My understanding as to why so many brands use them is because they are very neutral - they suit 'most' tastes on sound - not too bright, not too warm - and settle quickly!
Of course all manufacturers pay for them :) we personally prefer loud and punchy over mellow, which is why we go for Nylgut over similar priced strings. Also, you have to consider the availability in China - big brands are much easier to purchase in bulk and readily available, which is more time and cost-effective than dealing with importing smaller quantities from Japan or the US.

I don't think the top would be any different to 100% wood for durability. It's good the laminate top is dropped into the body at least - so there's edge protection with the plastic. Could it be improved to make it more durable by having a gloss finish to protect the top from humidity/temperature changes I wonder? (Of course it doesn't help the bare inner wood).

Still wondering why manufacturers insist on calling them 'travel' ukes. I travel (including to/from busking spots) with two or three ukes in sizes ranging from sub-soprano to tenor - definitely soprano and concert ukes are especially suitable for travel (as I'm sure you would agree, being a guitar-player). Admittedly, the ABS may be more durable, but a simple padded gig bag or even a hard case still means they can be transported easily. Mind you, the price gives a good springboard point for a reasonable instrument, whether beginner or on a very constrained budget. These will give some cheap uke manufacturers a bit of a challenge to compete with.
Well... This particular range, the TUS line, I mean, I get why it's called a travel ukulele. It's not the size, it's the durability. I own a soprano with which I travel frequently. It's been around the world two times over, if you'd count the distance, and withstood so much crap from me, the weather, and everything, that yeah, I can definitely call them travel ukes. Mine's over 2 years old at this point, still sounds fantastic, and it withstood both freezing and super hot temperatures, both extremely arid and humid conditions, it even took a bit of a dive in the ocean that one time, got banged on a few things, and it still works amazingly well. The only thing I have to worry about is the tuners getting a bit rusty after that ocean bath. You just can't kill this thing, no matter how hard you try. That's why it's a travel uke.
@@partyontheobjective One time we travelled to NAMM and fit 4 Flight travel ukes into a checked-in middle-sized suitcase. They arrived in perfect shape. This is how the name was born :) We often have (well, had) to fly with 5-7 ukes on us before the pandemic. Sometimes we couldn't take all of them as hand luggage, so we really appreciated the possibility to squeeze many ukes into one suitcase without worrying that they might get crashed/smashed ;)
@@FlightUkulele Yup! Amazingly sturdy. You guys featured a picture of my hand and my black travel soprano backdropped by Torres del Paine on your insta last year. On that trip, I traveled all over South America, a lot of the time in planes. The ukulele got bumped a lot on those trips. Survived treks, camping, rain, frost, deserts... Still going strong. I'm very impressed. Also a little sad, because I can't justify getting this TUC if TUS is still perfectly good lol!
I've ordered a mango top yesterday hoping that the wood still makes a difference in sound. 😅 Otherwise I'd have ordered a different design. I like the mango sound but prefer darker woods when it comes to the looks. I need a replacent for my enya oms (somethings) for traveling. The intonation just isn't very good...
I doubt the different woods make much difference in sound - they are all laminates and laminate doesn’t carry the tonal characteristics of the solid wood

I know you generally don't make any string recommendations. But I'm sure you had something in mind. I have some Worth CM and some Aquila Reds at home. But I guess one of those was not what you were thinking of...?? I also just heard that you like to put fluorocarbon strings on sopranos. I have the Worth Clear on mine to make it less bouncy and more stable. It's quite a resonant loud uke - solid mahogany from a very small German company (xalani). And the Reds are on my KT-5000 to get the full spectrum... But apart from online sound samples I don't have much experience..... I need the travel uke to accompany my singing and I'm mostly strumming... out of a lack of expertise.😅 Just asking so I might still order some strings before going on holiday. The Flight uke will only arrive on monday. Maybe you could help me out.

There will likely be a difference, but they are laminates - so it won't be a tonewood signature difference - just a difference from the laminate type.
Flight ukuleles are tremendous value, might be worth adding to my list of potential next buys 😀 best wishes for 2021, Baz

I had that happen with a (not cheap) wooden slot bridge and it splintered part of the bridge. Never again - double up the knots!!

I think so - in the flesh the concert is definitely much warmer, but not muffled - in fact makes the soprano sound a little echoey and thin.

yes - a good buy and one I like. I also would look at the Chinese made Kiwaya ukuleles
Unfortunately this Uke seems tough to find. The only thing I see on Amazon, Reverb or Ebay is the Desert print TUC-UCU version.

I've ordered a mango top yesterday hoping that the wood still makes a difference in sound. 😅 Otherwise I'd have ordered a different design. I like the mango sound but prefer darker woods when it comes to the looks.
I need a replacent for my enya oms (somethings) for traveling. The intonation just isn't very good...
I doubt the different woods make much difference in sound - they are all laminates and laminate doesn’t carry the tonal characteristics of the solid wood
@@GotAUkulele Thanks a lot for your response! You mentioned somewhere that you would put some "sweeter" strings on this ukulele. I think it was the soprano review..? I know you generally don't make any string recommendations. But I'm sure you had something in mind. I have some Worth CM and some Aquila Reds at home. But I guess one of those was not what you were thinking of...?? I also just heard that you like to put fluorocarbon strings on sopranos. I have the Worth Clear on mine to make it less bouncy and more stable. It's quite a resonant loud uke - solid mahogany from a very small German company (xalani). And the Reds are on my KT-5000 to get the full spectrum... But apart from online sound samples I don't have much experience..... I need the travel uke to accompany my singing and I'm mostly strumming... out of a lack of expertise.😅 Just asking so I might still order some strings before going on holiday. The Flight uke will only arrive on monday.

It's tough, but I would beware keeping it in a car in high temperatures. Not sure what heat would do to the glues holding it together.
