I love mods and ROM hacks as long as they feel like complete experiences or sequels. I don't really care for hacks that change only a few things or feel completely detached from the original game.
I love the look of this mod! Particularly the Secret Slide track, power sliding around those sharp turns and curves would make for some intense competition. And all those little shout-outs to other N64 games are a great touch. From everything I see Litronom definitely did justice to the original MK64 experience, I have all the respect to them for creating this 👍🏻
Oh man that DKR track combined with Mario Kart is just the dream! Hope we get to see more of this.. looks like an awesome mod, definitely checking it out soon!
Ι always found interesting how Mario Kart and it's clones, on any system, are the only racing games that have unlimited draw distance on 5th gen systems. Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Crash Team Racing, all have unlimited draw distance (except on a few tracks like Rainbow Road) while every other racing game on these systems have some sort of pop-up or fog.
It's because the tracks are so specifically designed with X amount of polygons, textures and things to draw at any one time. As long as the designers stay within the a game engines strict limits they can keep up the illusion of good draw distances. Nintendo, Rare, Naughty Dog were/are super talented. Knew the consoles limits while pushing them in their own way
Of all the tracks you showed, Hazy Maze Cave and the Secret Slide were definitely my favorite. The concept of taking a Mario 64 level and dropping it straight into Mario Kart with so little alternation sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does. It reminds me of Peach's Castle in Royal Raceway, and it's a very specific aesthetic that I think can only work in Mario Kart 64.
