    I think you forgot one thing about the case of Luigi:
    In Japanese article, fans ask if Luigi was planned during the development, which Miyamoto stated it was planned for multiplayer split-screen. But due to memory restriction, they had to scrap that idea.
    So in my theory, this model of Luigi was used of the planned multiplayer, which also explains why his model is basically just Mario but taller as it wasn't being made yet.

      Nintendo requires source code submissions for every game they release, so Nintendo also should have a copy of every officially released game even from 3rd parties going at LEAST as far back as the SNES. SquareEnix was able to get the source code for Seiken Densetu 3 from Nintendo to use as a base for the remake, which is why Trials of Mana for SNES is a Switch exclusive (or so they say).
      Sega also generally keeps great track of their source code, as most of their 1st party titles have been rereleased on other systems without emulation.

    A couple things.
    -Luigi WAS in fact confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto to have been in Super Mario 64, but was removed from the game in February 1996 due to memory issues. They tried to re-implement him in a Mario Bros style mingame à la SMB3's versus multiplayer, but even this couldn't come to pass.
    -The source of these leaks is already known. The big digital heist was done in 2018 by a guy called wack0, who at the time was in trouble for hacking Microsoft's servers. He got off on house arrest and a computer ban because he's autistic, but he actually spread the leaked contents to multiple people to assure that even if he was caught, this stuff would still get out there. It's still being released in batches by those people to this day. This same guy also leaked a shitload of Pokémon stuff before he was caught.
    -The Ocarina of Time maps that leaked appear to include previous versions of maps that made it in the final game, including a working early Kokiri Forest. The screenshots in this video are in early versions of Ganon's Castle. Beta enemies have also leaked, such as early versions of the Wallmaster and Octorok, and an unused golden knight enemy, probably a Darknut. All of these enemies, and the older Ganon's Castle rooms, have been seen in old Ocarina of Time screenshots from beta builds. I've seen screenshots of test maps on 4chan too but those were already available in complete form in the Ocarina of Time Master Quest debug rom, which leaked online in 2005.
    -The coolest thing not mentioned here is that EVERY voice clip from Star Fox 64 was leaked in fully uncompressed form. Theoretically this can be hacked into the 3DS remake of Star Fox 64 to replace the awkwardly re-recorded voice lines in that version.

    The UNUSED DATA for the games such as Luigi's model and textures and Zelda's unused dungeon rooms, ARE leftovers from earlier prototypes of their respective games.
    The fact that they don't get compiled into the ROM with the makefile ONLY indicates that they aren't present in the FINAL RELEASE build of the ROM, not that they were NEVER used in any previous builds.
    You may consider it misleading that they have to be partially reconstructed and re-injected into the final ROM to be seen in a usable form, but that's necessary because the game (and the rendering engine) moved on without those assets.

  • @jessicacarter8264
    @jessicacarter8264 4 года назад +30

    I get what you mean about it being "copyrighted data" that belongs to Nintendo. Although I kinda don't feel sorry for them because they are so against fan creations or adaptations of their games. There's nothing wrong with a scholarly view of this though and you're certainly a person people look to for information about this stuff. I've bought quite a lot of Nintendo's games in the past sometimes having to buy them more than once, (like having to buy it again on the Wii, when you already have it on the SNES).
    This Luigi source reference, could it have been used in the Nintendo Super Mario 64DS game? I know Luigi (also Yoshi, and Wario in addition to Mario) were in that version of the game. Anyways, keep up making the videos! They're awesome!

    Correction: Almost all of the ROM dumps are playable. I was able to get them running myself. The "checked out" versions were somehow corrupted, so you have to use the versions with the ,v extension. Plus, you actually have to edit the files to remove metadata headers and footers. Interestingly, the dumps are nearly identical to retail, but the Ocarina of Time dump contains some interesting differences. For example: It has the changed Gerudo symbols for some items that was seen in the Gamecube release, but not in the N64 retail versions. Almost like an in-between version.
    Edit: Just as a note, the ROMs are clearly just retail ROMs used for iQue localisation/conversion. They don't contain beta assets or anything that aren't already well-documented.

Okay: Later games proved that the N64 can handle 4 player split screen and the recompilation project proves that the game was not compiled with the highest newest compiler optimization options... but to some extend: It is a launch title. It is primly a single player game. Instead of tacking on a two player mode (or an alternate character with different jump physic for single player), focusing on the core game was absolutely the right decission.

    because people do not understand how real world software development works, they assume that something was or is part of the released project if it has been found in the repository. i do this all the time to use an existing project and use it as a test environment for developing something new. it will be checked-in into a private development branch.

    As a emulator developer for J2ME mobile stuff the one question I get asked much is "The PhoneME source code is available, why not use that?" and the answer is that clean-rooming forbids it and that project is only a reference implementation, so it would only help in the short run if anything.
    On the video end, I liked the video! I was hoping that (automated) captioning would pop up for the video but I had to use my transcriber for this, as hearing is not the best.

    8:52 "Nintendo has a massive problem on their hands"
    Sorry but I disagree. These properties have long since stopped generating revenue for Nintendo. Yes, they release remakes and ports from time to time but they can still do that anyway. Yes, the possibility of a ongoing leak can be a massive problem but so far there is no evidence that this is the case. The leak itself could be 20 to 25 years in the past.

    • @TruExtentChannel

      Yes but those were assets already on the cartridge. The idea here is finding stuff that was cut and scrapped during development that never made it onto the final cartridge; the never before seen like Luigi in Mario 64, the beta Yoshi sprites, the beta Pokémon designs, the uncompressed Star Fox 64 dialogue, etc.

    I'm interested in the source code and learning how they made their games, but on the other hand, as you mentioned, it's their private property and out of respect, I won't look at the leaked code.
    I hope they try to get ahead of everything and just say "screw it, let's release the source", but we both know that'll never happen.

    More people, ignoring the words of others... Miyamoto claimed that Luigi WAS inside SM64 but the complex landscapes were too much to code for.

  • @cheaterman49
    @cheaterman49 4 года назад +1

    Ooh, that's very interesting - the bit about missing C files and having precompiled object files in there. Reminds me of that "was Mario64 release accidentally compiled with debugging symbols" thing - you showed there how most objects were already compiled by independent Makefiles beforehand, and enabling debugging symbols on the main Makefile wouldn't do anything because it would mostly apply to the final linking phase (where it doesn't have any effect). I'd tend to agree about this being leak mitigation for precisely that kind of situation we're in right now - I mean, if I was Nintendo and I knew OEMs wouldn't need actual game code (basically only re-link the ROM and maybe rewrite a few headers for the platform), I wouldn't give it away either ; looks like Nintendo themselves have a better track record with leaks than third parties like BroadOn here (tighter NDAs or something?).
    That still doesn't explain how we have actual source code for other games, but I'm sure you'll have some insights on the subject in the next video. Thanks for your reporting - I feel equally conflicted about this, at some point I was even trying to convince myself Nintendo is doing it, perhaps to give away some knowledge while keeping the freedom to retract it all at some point if they don't like the outcome ; but obviously that's delusional, and I like Nintendo, I hope this doesn't change them in any bad way.

    I just find it interesting to follow this whole topic and to see what Nintendo has actually been hiding from us for so many damn years.
    In that regard, yes, I'm actually fine with the leaks because Nintendo always killed off fan projects in the past also, see it as sweet bitter revenge.
    Do I consider it to be right however? Not from a neutral standpoint but that's too the reason why I hope Nintendo somehow gets okay with this and actually attempts to bring new versions of their classic games with once canceled features.
    We all would benefit from it.
