That is not widescreen. That's a 4:3 aspect ratio, same as the original. If it was widescreen it would fill the entire screen to a 16:9 aspect ratio.

I love this game. I had the original in 1997 and when I played as Bowser which to be honest guaranteed me a win. I played "Firestarter" by "The Prodigy" back then as it kind of blended with my fast driving. Happy times.
