This episode genuinely brought me to tears. My identity is so wrapped up in my art that I put unnecessary pressure on myself and set unrealistic standards. I love art. I love drawing. And yet I constantly make it miserable for myself. I find no enjoyment in it because I'm always worrying about how awful my skills are, or I'm telling myself I'll never reach the level of the artists I admire are at.
I'm definitely going to check out this course.

Nori, please know that your anxiety is in direct proportion to how much you care. The more we care about something (e.g., your art) the more power we give it to hurt us (e.g., through disappointment). It doesn't matter that the threat isn't likely or probable (e.g., I'm sure your art isn't awful), just the idea of it can scare us when we love it so much. The key is to know 1) you are more than your art and 2) those thoughts won't go away so we must practice not believing them. I'm only 30 mins in but this is the greatest episode so far. It's actually made me tear up a little and recognise a few things that have been too obscure before. I'm in my early twenties and this man is helping me to look forward to another day, acknowledge my pains and look for real solutions, something I've struggled with for the past 6 years or so.

Making a living with my friends has been a deeply frustrated life-long dream, which apparently isn't going to be possible for me, unfortunately. I teared up a little when he said this. I honestly thought I was the only one, and that I was being immature for wanting it.

It really is. You actually retain information from short term to long term, just by getting a solid night of sleep. I've been very tuned in to my body lately, and I refuse to take care of anything until I have my sleep! Truly. Then there's healthy diet and exercise, but sleep is the #1 rule.

@@arielceleda4897 This is a common experience among my high-achievers. After being so busy, you want to relax. However, relaxation and active recovery or leisure is best scheduled during the day or early evening. Once you get to 11pm, time is best spent in deep sleep. The part where he talks about sleep is gold. I always prioritize my sleep time. As a college student I always refused to be on class at 7am. I would only get there 8am on. It made me look like a lazy guy who doesn't care for the class but I just think that getting good sleep and a good breakfast are just way more important than just showing up on time feeling that you barely woke up from a night you barely slept. I always drew the line where if I felt I was about to compromise physical and mental health I just wouldn't cross it.
Marshall always brings top notch quality, tested and proven knowledge all the time. A gem of a mentor. I have a question, what is best sleep schedule for a person working night shift on a graphic design job from 9.30 PM to 6.30 AM ?

Hi Deepak and thanks for watching, and for your question. The best thing to do is 1) have a consistent sleep and wake schedule, 2) be in bed about 8.5 hours (to get ~8 hours of sleep, it takes time to fall asleep), 3) be sure your room is very dark and quiet (get room darkening shades) and 4) use blue light glasses if on laptop/phone and she down the blue light 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow your body to relax (blue light keeps us up).

This is why I love what I do - and have moved from just working with sport and athletes to artists and performing artists. We are all performing all the time, only our context changes. Glad you found it helpful.
This was so fascinating. I have a non-profit to heal trauma and ptsd and this is gold!! It is very difficult for those in trauma to sleep but it is extremely critical for healing the brain and body. I would like more info on achieving sleep.
You are right. REM-sleep dreaming accomplishes 2 things: sleeping to remember the details for an autobiographical perspective and sleeping to forget or dissolve the painful emotional charge. I invite you to join my sleep workshop next week (details on my website link above)

Loved listening to this! Having recently graduated college and confronted with what careers to pursue, I've been possibly too overanalytical about why I lean towards art as a career. It kind of hit home when Marshall mentioned reading mental health books at 19 since I'm at that age and have been falling down that path as well. It's lead me to ask questions about why I pursue art, and if that's a career suited for me, but sometimes I feel it's caused me to overanalyze. It was reassuring to hear you discuss how some performers explained that they don't know why they do what they do, but they enjoy it anyway.

Now I’ve realised that my biggest motivation with drawing is chasing adoration. I want people to be impressed with my drawings. I want lots of likes on Facebook. What I don’t like is the hard work learning how to draw.
The approval of others can be a strong motivator, and it tends to be short lived and/or never enough. There is always more likes to get. If you find out why you draw for you, you are also likely to find the motivation for deliberate practice. Best wishes to you.
I totally understand your motive, but perhaps in time you may find the process of improving and growing your skillset to be it's own reward, it's pretty fun watching yourself pull-off works that you couldn't 3 or 6 months prior, and finding new things to test and implement as you go ☺

Likely true! Sleep deprivation has so many consequences AND we often don't know we are sleep deprived. Sleep is absolutely the #1 performance enhancer. I'd love to share more with you in my sleep workshop next week. Details on my website that Marshall so graciously posted at the top.

Great podcast! The psychology aspect of our interest is just as important as the physical. This is very useful for me!
But if have an opinion: knowing why your interested in something can be very important because you can learn somethibg from it. I like art and i particularly like realism. I later questioned why it was so important to me that i draw realistic and it was because i wanted to to feel perfect because i've been feeling inherently imperfect my whole life and im still working on it. Im still going to pursue realism but knowing that helped me to just do art for me ibstead feeling like i have to be good at something in order to derserve happiness.
This makes me so happy! Yes! You are enough and your art is uniquely yours. My daughter is growing as an artist and I tell her daily, I love seeing HER in her art. That's what makes her art sincerely perfect to me.

Trying to wrap my thought around a simple fact that there are four basic human emotions: happy, sad, mad, and scared.

I usually go to sleep at around 4-5 AM (sometimes earlier) and wake up at maybe 9-10 AM, and around 2 hours in the evening. I am more productive at night but at the same time, I wanna wake up earlier than 9 AM cuz i feel like im losing that early morning touch of how you feel like you have more time in your hands when you start the day early. I get so disappointed in myself when I dont wake up before 11 AM even when i go to sleep really late. It feels like my cycle had been reset at 6 AM and that regardless of when i went to sleep, after 6 AM its the new day and im just sleeping for 3-4 more hours after 6 which for some reason makes me feel like im wasting my time even though it isnt like that (hope im making sense).
Adding on: In other words, I feel like i wanna be both an early bird and a night owl lol.
BUT I guess I'll try to reach 6 hours of sleep and then eventually 7.
Hi Shilpa - it does sound like the broken sleep with that 2 hour evening nap can be throwing your cycle off. A solid 8 is much more restorative than 6+2. Gradually going to bed earlier (can you shoot for 2AM?) and sleeping and waking at 10 would be a great start and notice how much better you feel. You will likely be more productive and that can help you know you are not wasting time. Best wishes.

@@SportsDrEddie thank you for your reply. I wonder if you would cover something along the lines on how to optimise the sleep. My issue that I wish my body didn't need as much haha sounds funny. I guess I am trying to find more time to do things. Between work/family no much time left for personal growth things and I always looking at my sleep as if I can steal from it but I do understand that it would be detrimental so I feel stuck in that regard of never finding enough time. I know I border on a few other things not just sleep here. Thanks again for your respond and time.
I can't agree more with the sleep part! So I have a question. What do you do when you work 9 hours a day 5 days a week and when you add on daily chores that you have to do and end up with barely no sleep. I usually sleep 9-10 hours when I have a day off work but on a work week I barely get 6 hours and I know for a fact that it affects me both physically and mentally but I can't do anything about it.
This is a common and real challenge. Unfortunately, our bodies aren't sensitive to cultural demands or expectations. Getting less than 6 hours is a health concern. I help my clients control what they can. For example, having family help with chores or hire help if you can. Finding places that we may be inefficient with time (e.g., 2 hours of Netflix to relax each night) that we could put toward sleep. ... ... I have a workshop that may help. Actually I subscribe to the opposite. Distraction can be a frustrating coping strategy. A colleague once said, "you can bury your emotions, but you bury them alive." They then come up out of the grave at the worst times. I work with my high-achievers on mindfulness and acceptance, so they can do their art with the understandable anxiety that accompanies performance pressure.

Quick tip. Be the perfect perfectionist. Our intolerance of mistakes is what moves us further from perfection. But if we want to get close to perfect, we have to take those mistakes and learn from each one. That makes us better. That gets us closer to perfection (from one perfectionist to another ... best wishes).
too bad we're living under a capitalist hellscape and adequate sleep seems to be a luxury not everyone can afford. work, commute, chores, kids, exercise, sleep and you're left with very little time to do the things you enjoy. That's why people cut into sleep, it seems less important than those other necessities.
I'm with you and am frustrated that our culture doesn't take the mounds of research and work with us to prioritize health with better schedules and expectations. Sleep is often the first thing to be sacrificed because it does seem least important. And the truth is it my be most important. There is not one organ or body process that isn't affected by our sleep. ...
