I saw this in NYC on a class field trip in 1977. Never forgot it & still have the album. In the revival they kept the ballet, but sped up the tempo so fast it was dizzying. They cut it completely in the new revival and the tornado only lasts a few seconds. This recording is the tempo & length it should be. It's only 3:25 minutes. It's one of my favorite pieces of the soundtrack.

When I was in grade school I saw the movie in the theaters when it was brand new. Later I found this album of the stage production in the library, and I must admit I was always disappointed that Quincy Jones never tried to use this piece of music because it quickly became my fave on the entire album! My other biggest fave was/is "I Was Born The Day Before Yesterday". :)

When the casting for the movie was announced, a lot of people were very disappointed that Stephanie Mills didn't get re cast as Dorothy, and Andre DeShields as the Wiz. But they did leave Ted Ross and Mabel King in their original roles. And having Lena Horne play Addapearle was a plus.

Just saw the revival tonight in San Francisco in its pre-Broadway run and... nope, they completely removed this number and put in an "updated" version that wasn't half as compelling, thrilling and exciting as the original AND they cut the entire tornado sequence down to what felt like less than two minutes. A lot of good stuff in this revival, yes; but this cut was, for me, the most glaring omission and I hope there was a very good reason they excised it and not just a creative whim in favor of updating the show because it not being there was one of the few, yet massive, disappointments of this production.
