I just watched this the other day for the first time. Tarkovsky is one of those filmmakers (or I should say artist) whose work I appreciate but never have a real connection with. Not sure what it is but I have a hard time really engaging with his work. Few people have as much control over their images as he does, but there's still something missing for me. I have a few others of his to get to (Nostalgia and The Sacrifice) so hopefully I can connect with those. Glad to see you're posting more on the Tube!

Hi Dan. Tarkovsky was a challenge for me to start but I very much enjoyed the journey exploring all of his films. Nostalghia is one of my absolute favorites too. To me, the movies are cinematic poetry and meditative which I think is very appealing to me especially at this time in my life. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

A film that changed my life was 1992’s Dracula which is my current favorite movie of all time. It had a huge impact on my personal life and my life in general because of the subject matter and the cinematography and shadows and the way it dealt with lust was amazing. Also I finally started a channel. Keep up the great work dude!

Wonderful insight Dave. I just saw this also for the first time recently (I have the rest of an A. T boxed set to work through still) and it absolutely overtook me for a solid week, and I still think about it regularly. Lingering, haunting art. Almost immediately after, I read Geoff Dyer's book Zona, which is part commentary, part analysis, part strange travelogue, it suits the tone and mood of the film very well. Highly recommended. I really need to dive into Solaris this week...

His second film, Andrei Rublev has stayed with me ever since I've seen it. I think it's his best work, especially the last 40 minutes or so and the ending sequence that ties everything together. It's the best film about being an artist and how everything that happens around you influences and lives in your work

Stalker (1979): In fact, the 3 people's journey in the movie goes back to the origins of human history but with religious color, every step they take in the Zone is a period of history. Zone suddenly appeared 20 years ago - 20 centuries. On each path, even back to the past, you should pay attention to the front and back position of each character. However, first we need to make it clear that the Stalker character named "The Hedgehog" is "who"? It is a people, the nation of this people collapsed in the middle ages (meat millers), then they exiled, they became rich, they supported a united empire and then later This empire turned to chase and kill them, this was nothing more than tying the noose on its own.
Going back on the journey, it is not difficult to recognize the first paragraph where the old tanks are the symbols of the two world wars, now "science" comes first, "philosophy" follows, and finally " religion".
The "enlightenment" period: philosophy and religion fought - Stalker threw the iron bar at Writer.
The "renaissance" period: 3 characters gathered together, but Writer went to the "room" and returned, when he was ridiculed by the Professor as "Mr Shakespeare" - the writer representing the time. Renaissance period.
The transition from medieval to renaissance: when Stalker and Writer go together and return to the Professor, marked by Dante's work of God Khuc (hell, purgatory, heaven) - where The intersection of philosophy and religion, details in the film may show that....

While it's a completely different kind of movie, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is one that stayed with me. It's a fantastic thing. Bizarre and hilarious. An absolute Joy to experience.

Welcome to the zone. Have you read a roadside picnic? It is the base of the film. S.t.a.l.k.e.r stands for, Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers and Robbers. This movie is by far my hidden gem I try to share with people.

Hey Dave, hope you‘re doing well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I would like to recommend Tarkovsky‘s book “Sculpting in Time“. I think to understand his work, it is essential to understand him as a human being. The last scene, the dialog between the Stalker and his wife, mirrors in my opinion, the fundament of the movie. Tarkovsky is portraying his thoughts and his sorrows in a movie, in this case it is about faith. He shares the same worries like Bergman for example. You got the pastor in “Winter Light“ on the one hand and the Stalker in “Stalker“ on the other. Greetings from Germany

Thank you so much for the recommendations and insights. I loved watching all of Tarkovsky’s films this year and I know I will be exploring them more and more as life goes on. Bergman will be a lifelong study too. Hope all is well.

May I suggest this as an insight my own of course, to me the film is about a search for purpose but a great irony is the wife may be the only character who knows her purpose to love her husband, child and family but it slips through her fingers due to the stalker going back and forth to the zone which effects him greatly and the wife is left to make what she can from this situation
