This observatory is in the village called Hanle. There's also a beautiful monastery on a nearby hill. I remember riding solo on my motorcycle to Hanle from Pangong lake where the lake accompanies you with its tremendous beauty for around 50km. Then the things get more lonely where you can't see humans for as much as 20km. It's a desolate route with almost non existent roads. And then as you near Hanle the landscape becomes much greener. The people in Hanle are really hospitable and friendly. It was one of the best times of my life to ride from Pangong to Hanle.

I always had a wish to go to alaska or norway for viewing this Milky way band and a sky full of stars and galaxies, but I didn't know that i can do that from my own country ❤️❤️
I am from small viillage in rajasthan and we used to have this sort of scenery every night, back in late 90s. i was 5-7 year old and back then we didnt had 24 h electricity so small village like mine which is almost 300 km far away from major city would have no light pollution and we would have this exact same view. Now we have all the access to electricity but magical views in sky are gone.
I sometimes wonder where exactly this South India starts from? The irony is when you are in South everyone see themselves as different and superior to their neighbouring state's people. This North and south or east feeling has to go. One Nation One India.

I and my friend travelled to this place in 2001, when we were students in college... though we are not astronomy students, our trip was sponsored by IISc, B'lore seeing our enthusiasm. Back then in 2001, we were told that were probably the first batch of civilians to visit the telescope. I must say, their hospitality was outstanding!...amazing memories
People visit the countries near the polar regions to see northern lights and but this mesmerizing view is available for Indians even without leaving the country. Just wow. Proud to be an Indian. 🇮🇳💪

Seeing the sky through the Astronomical Observatory is now on my bucket list, Definitely would be a exciting thing to do, to see the vastness of the universe and to always have a courage to explore to make ourselves our best versions.
We should protect the northern areas, in India and Pakistan as well as other countries. These areas are magnificent but unfortunately some tourists don't care enough about the environment there and pollute these beautiful places. Edit: there should be like a multinational treaty/organisation to take care of the environment exclusively in the Northern areas.

I had experienced it only during my childhood during visit to Granny's House. No phone or camera can perfectly capture that one of a kind beautiful experience.
I used to see it in every clear and dry night here in my hometown, Diglipur, Andaman and Nicobar. Its magical....seems like laying in a cot and gazing it eternally, counting the shooting stars to make a wish come true.....and now , when I am in Port Blair, the city lights makes such skies a rare and forgotten memory......

Historically. Over a thousand years ago or so. No other region in the world could compare to Indian astronomy. The Arabs took this knowledge and built on it.
Been there this year , unfortunately the sky was cloudy the night we stayed , But we did star gazing at pangong lake and its equally good for the naked eye.
I spent a couple days and a couple hundred dollars travelling to cherry springs Pennsylvania to see the milky way. I was very excited. But I discovered that the sky doesn't look like it does in all of the pictures you see. There are no clouds, nebulae, color streaks, galaxies. There's just a bunch of little white dots and a foggy band of stars going through them. Don't get your hopes up. There is no where on Earth where you can see this. Don't bother.
I am sick of the Indians saying "proud to be indian " and shit. We have no reason to be proud of when we ignore other problems we have like castism , rapes , dirty streets , falling economy , population , bad politics. @@mongolianbornaparte7217 it's the problem that children here are thought to be proud of India for no apparent reason. The education system in India is such a narrow one that it prevents students from having a dynamic way of thinking it just restricts their perspective of the world.
