And that fear is enough to keep someone "trapped" on that island forever. Bring them out for a week, put them in 5 star hotels and eat decent food, have decent showers, see the world, see a shopping mall, then bring them back. I really, really doubt that that is true. No one is keeping stats on infant mortality on the island so it is very easy for her to make that claim. They probably just throw the dead ones into the shark pit.

Everything about this is incredibly fascinating, on one hand we see an crowded, unsanitary island, with a population generally living in poverty. While on the other we see an almost perfect community of people who are able to get along and live happily, and organize without a proper government.
They really all promised to just be cool and stuck with it. Respecting the guidance and wisdom of their elders, putting pride and self aside for the good of everyone on the island. Humans are amazing
My anxiety levels rose while watching this. A lot of the time I find myself needing complete silence and that would not be the place for me. I do love how there is no crime and resolutions to conflict are easily met. If only large countries could do this!

I'm from Colombia and I had no idea this place existed. It's awful how the government abandons remote communities and they have to survive by themselves while we live in a bubble in the big cities
the government leaving them alone is why they can survive, if the gov comes in they will put up all sorts of regulations that would get the island shut down (like housing regulations, food licenses, etc)
I hope that there are initiatives to educate people and help them by sending organisations on things like family planning, waste management and things like that.
And here I am, complaining about living in a studio apartment at age 28. These people are literally sharing rooms smaller than my house with 10+ people. That's wild

I’ve just watched 2 of your videos, both of which show some of the “poorest” countries & places in the world. The only thing I’ve noticed is how happy the people are. With the very little to nothing that they have, a lesson that’s bursting through is how much they love the people around them, they work together & they are satisfied with what they have. It is so refreshing to see how human communities should actually be like. I’m grateful for what I have in this life & I pray for these people continue to live long lives blessed with the necessities they need to survive. It’s very humbling watching these documentaries. @@ItisMoody Its probably accurate from the perspective that there hasn't been more than a hundred or so people on the island until recently and most of the people who have died in the last 20-30yrs were that old and didn't really have health problems because the island wasn't crowded back then. That number is bound to drop to 60-70 if they don't start addressing the sanitary and nutrician issues and based on the massive shift in demographics.

I havent seen anyone mention the lack of family planning? Having 2-5 babies on a tiny island, starting at the age of 16, without enough food, water, or sanitation to support them... the midwife needs to start educating them if she hasn't already. Not to mention the amount of interbreeding throughout the years with a limited gene pool....
This island is a very interesting anthropology studies area. These people live like 8000 years ago, not saying this to belittle them, I mean social structure. Elders as final leadears and conflict resolvers, average pregnant age 16, no family structure. This is very interesting. You can call this horrible, and I agree, but it is also interesting that they have created this sort of social life for themselves.
@@graullas8981 To be fair, there’s quite a lot of countries/cultures to this day that have this way of doing (elders leading, babies at 16 etc…) It’s not that uncommon even today, so it’s not really living like ‘8000’ years ago.

This is actually fascinating. It might be controversial, but I legitimately don't think that high density is the problem here. If they had access to clean water, reliable electricity, and safe construction practices, they could easily build vertically and give everyone far more room and cleaner standards of living. This is a poverty issue, not a density issue. Clearly the community is VERY strong and makes the most out of what they have. I admire their ability to maintain a tight knit, crime-free community and help each other get by.
Hello, I like your post. I believe that the community is strong in part due to the poverty, they rely on each other so much, they are physically crossing paths and being with each other all the time. If they have more space, it might be okay, but too much space and wealth may weaken the community.
Nah the problem is they live in a national park yet none of the fish are safe to eat due to pollution. They have destroyed the habitat of the second largest reef in the world. Who cares about community or poverty or 'being born here'. They shouldn't be there.
Family planning is the problem here. The earth is already over-populated. Platitudes about "community" and "strength" etc. aside, it really serves little benefit to humanity--never mind the environment--for populations to multiply needlessly while insisting the problem is not enough money and charity is thrown at them. They are crime-free and tight-knit not because they're noble, but because it's a necessity due to the living conditions and they must cooperate for survival. There's no need to romanticize poverty. It's just enough isolated population surviving, while taking from the earth and obliterating the environment.
Wow, it's been ages since I last visited Santa Cruz. I remember living there since I was a kid, and now I'm 40! Seeing it back after 15 years feels surreal. It's incredible to see how the island has changed and grown. Despite the cramped spaces and chaotic life, there's a sense of community that's unmatched. This video made me want to visit there again.
The culture here seems beautiful and surreal❤. No need for the mean comments. I would love to visit but also to contribute maybe to marine life or something to enhance whatever greatness already lies there.

Everything about this is incredibly fascinating, on one hand we see an crowded, unsanitary island, with a population generally living in poverty. While on the other we see an almost perfect community of people who are able to get along and live happily, and organize without a proper government.
They really all promised to just be cool and stuck with it. Respecting the guidance and wisdom of their elders, putting pride and self aside for the good of everyone on the island. Humans are amazing
tons of small homogeneous communities like this can be organized just fine without government.

I’ve just watched 2 of your videos, both of which show some of the “poorest” countries & places in the world. The only thing I’ve noticed is how happy the people are. With the very little to nothing that they have, a lesson that’s bursting through is how much they love the people around them, they work together & they are satisfied with what they have. It is so refreshing to see how human communities should actually be like. I’m grateful for what I have in this life & I pray for these people continue to live long lives blessed with the necessities they need to survive. It’s very humbling watching these documentaries. @@ItisMoody Its probably accurate from the perspective that there hasn't been more than a hundred or so people on the island until recently and most of the people who have died in the last 20-30yrs were that old and didn't really have health problems because the island wasn't crowded back then. That number is bound to drop to 60-70 if they don't start addressing the sanitary and nutrician issues and based on the massive shift in demographics.

Having 2-5 babies on a tiny island, starting at the age of 16, without enough food, water, or sanitation to support them... the midwife needs to start educating them if she hasn't already. That's the kind of vibe I got from this video. It makes me wanna go there to live, although they do have their problems that is a bit concerning for me. Maybe I could sacrifice a bit of comfort & privacy...not too sure...something I would have to think about, if I ever get an offer to live there. I kinda could see why the people there don't want to leave.

That guy who talked about how grateful he is for the coral reef seems like a really smart and awesome dude.
A shame the entire population is destroying that reef and dumping all their trash and feces into it, to the point the local fish population is extinct.

Its easy to be happy when you don't know better. This people live in very bad conditions.
Maybe part of it is mental illness, I suffer from it and I have 0 motivation or desire to change my life. I can't explain it but I can understand it, change is horrifying even if its for the better!

This is actually fascinating. It might be controversial, but I legitimately don't think that high density is the problem here. If they had access to clean water, reliable electricity, and safe construction practices, they could easily build vertically and give everyone far more room and cleaner standards of living. This is a poverty issue, not a density issue. Clearly the community is VERY strong and makes the most out of what they have. I admire their ability to maintain a tight knit, crime-free community and help each other get by.

Hello, I like your post. I believe that the community is strong in part due to the poverty, they rely on each other so much, they are physically crossing paths and being with each other all the time. If they have more space, it might be okay, but too much space and wealth may weaken the community.

Nah the problem is they live in a national park yet none of the fish are safe to eat due to pollution. They have destroyed the habitat of the second largest reef in the world. Who cares about community or poverty or 'being born here'. They shouldn't be there.
Family planning is the problem here. The earth is already over-populated. Platitudes about "community" and "strength" etc. aside, it really serves little benefit to humanity--never mind the environment--for populations to multiply needlessly while insisting the problem is not enough money and charity is thrown at them. They are crime-free and tight-knit not because they're noble, but because it's a necessity due to the living conditions and they must cooperate for survival. There's no need to romanticize poverty. It's just enough isolated population surviving, while taking from the earth and obliterating the environment.
Wow, it's been ages since I last visited Santa Cruz. I remember living there since I was a kid, and now I'm 40! Seeing it back after 15 years feels surreal. It's incredible to see how the island has changed and grown. Despite the cramped spaces and chaotic life, there's a sense of community that's unmatched. This video made me want to visit there again.
