Weren’t the models in the 90’s and 80’s much more “gorgeous”? Yes they are today too..but I mean back then they had figures lol and they walked with personality and sexiness. I keep thinking of Naomi and Yasmeen…WOW they were SO lovely.
What a fantastic video. I love your descriptions of the different looks. I love Marpessa. Definitely one of my favourite models of the 80's/90's. She featured in the video of Slave to Love by Bryan Ferry (my favourite song of all time) ❤
Oh wow! I had forgotten about Marpessa. She wasn’t one of the ones that became like a rockstar in the US, but she was definitely all over the catwalk and magazines. Thank you for digging deep and reminding us of these great models from the past. I love seeing those runway shows from the 90’s. It was such a different time then.
Ooooh I didn’t know she was an Alaïa girl!! The 80s models are really fascinating as much as I love the 90s. But covered Sonia Cole too who was another 80s beauty!
Marpessa was No Joke!! Where have you been Malcolm?? I Need more Videos from You!!🙌🏿👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💚🐲 Yes I'm still waiting for more Fashion shows from you. 😊🙌🏿💜🕺🏽
Marpessa was known for her sassy walk. Notice her arm and hip movements, which are slightly exaggerated. She also had a signature move that she often used at the end of the runway, right before she did her turn. She is one of my favorite models, along with Dalma Callado, Irina Pantaeva, and Gisele Zelauy.
Just like her name Marpessa Miss Heinz 57 the exotic was like kryptonite to Eileen Ford’s stable of pretty blonds. She came up during the 80s along with other exotics like Gail Elliott and Veronica Webb who all made the cut and segwayed into the 90s, the era of the supermodel! THEE best era 🙌🙌🙌
I love how they walked then. They were allowed to have personality which is, I think why that era was so iconic for models as individuals. I WAS alive and into fashion big time then but I never noticed her. But of course we didn't see catwalk shows so much with no internet so mostly saw photo shoots and maybe she didn't do the collections I happened to like. ❤
Personality is the best word to use!! That’s the perfect way to explain it 🙌🏾💯 I’m so grateful that the internet allows us fashion lovers to discover these incredible forces of nature! 💖
She was there definitely during the golden era of supermodels, she’s in a lot of shows, she’s with Yasmeen and she’s with Naomi… She’s not a favorite of mine, but she definitely deserves her due.
I absolutely adore your channel. It's classy and elegant, and you give the best reactions. I know you cover many categories on your channel so I'd like to put in a request of lady miss kier I'd like to see your reaction. She was on runways as well for entertainment purposes while also having an amazing music group called deee lite and the most beautiful fashion imo. 😇💙
Ooooooooh the girlsssssssss!! I’ve just gone down a mini rabbit hole and I’m fascinated. Wish there was more footage of her on the runway, but I see the music videos and something for Mugler. I’ll definitely be circling back! And thank you for such nice compliments!! 😊💖
Marpessa was sometimes teamed with the beautiful Veronica Webb on the runway. She was one of the group of girls like Yasmin Le Bon & Gail Elliot who were slightly older than the supermodels, were not major players but were in all the major shows in the late 80s/early 90s
Never heard of her before! ....and i'm Dutch. It's shocking me how my own country doesn't seem to appreciate Dutch supermodels enough. Same with Karen Mulder.
@@motr1990 yes we do, and why you did not hear or see more of them is most likely because that they live abroad. Famke Jansen (became an actress) Cynthia Antonio, Marpessa Hennink, Linda Spiering and even Appolonia van Ravenstein (Apples) they were all big in the 80’s/90’s
@malcom This is my favorite Karen Mulder video. I also noticed in the plethora of models, if Karen and Yasmeen were in the same show, they were always one after the other. ruclips.net/video/5ekJYqDZmm0/видео.html
Marpessa had/has an ambiguous beauty that’s mutable. It was only recently that I discovered she’s part black! Claudia Mason was another mixed girl that was a top 90’s model!
Omgggggg so she is mixed!!! I thought she was but couldn’t find confirmation, thank you! Such an exotic beauty in the best way possible. I have Claudia on my list as well! 🙌🏾💯
You need to check out Anna Bayle , a Philippino Supermodel. Her walk is everything... It was always Anna, Iman ,and Dalma on the 80' and 90's runway shows. They're the 80's Trinity runway girls before the 90's. She's definitely in my top 5 for runway walks..
I LOVE GRACE JONES!!! Big inspiration for me! I did a Halloween video a couple years ago recreating one of her looks. Definitely will be featuring her in a video!
Marpessa and Veronica were very close...she taught Veronica how to runway walk...and even wore flats with Veronica because Veronica had not learned how to walk in heels per v. Webb's book.
As for best catwalkers ever, it's between yasmeen, marpessa and naomi and i don't think 4th place is close. We probably are just coming from the modern perspective that you're supposed to have a "signature walk" but these models had fairly long careers and didn't need to make themselves so distinct so they honed their craft instead. She's one of the few true catwalk chameleons to do it in that she walked differently to match the outfit, which to me almost seems obvious. She still could embellish with signature moves (heel kick when turning around), many of which are juvenile and whimsical and would not be classy on other people. But the fact that she gets away with it is sort of what makes her regal in that she is privileged to appear almost unprofessional because modeling isn't her "job." Countesses don't need jobs! She literally just looks like a girl playing the highest form of dressup ever. It's just phenomenal
Countesses don’t need jobs!!! Yessssss 🙌🏾💯 so well said sir! Personally I’d throw Naomi and maybe even Shalom in there too. But there were just so many insanely talented girls doing their thing in this era. So iconic! Yasmeen seemed to really be the benchmark of the 90s.
@@MalcolmSoaries His style was all about the flawless ice queens on the runway. So the girls would get into character almost as much as they would get into character for Mugler. The interesting thing is that Montana was also the designer for lanvin for a few years But after he had some trouble with the law (a long story). His name was completely erased from the history of lanvin.

Marpessa has what the French call "Je ne sais quoi." It's a quality that eludes description. She's indescribable.
Yes! Perfectly said. 🙌🏾💯

Yes! Slave to Love - that’s when fell in love with her, too.
finally. This is a catwalker She was so smooth with it
Very smooth. So much finesse! A real supermodel!!
I loved your video reaction to Marpessa. She was one of my favourite catwalk models in the 80s and 90s... so gorgeous.

The intro just killed me! And I can’t agree any more 🤣🤣🤫

Omg of course! It’s so much fun for me too! Crazy to think how different of a time it really was.
Pat Cleveland was her spirit animal!!!! Learned it all from Pat!!!
