I'm doing BJJ to learn self-defense, stay in shape, and socialize with people. Almost quit in the first month because I was getting wrecked all the time, but I'm glad I stuck with it. For being a new white belt Glen (sp?) is doing pretty good! No crazy spazzing or death grip+twist type of stuff. He's making the mistakes you'd expect to see but he has control and isn't panicking. Actually nice to see. I don't even know how many times I've had a white belt panic and grab two of my fingers and twist them to "just breaking your grips bro". Thanks for the video!

You gave some advice around the two minute 30 second mark, and I think it’s really important advice that is, unfortunately, ignored or unknown by so many people in the jiujitsu community.
    Don’t start on your knees.
I don’t know how it came to be a thing in jiujitsu, but it’s so silly. Maybe it’s because BJJ practitioners are often unfamiliar with takedowns and operate under the incorrect belief that there’s no way to safely practice takedowns.
As always, excellent instruction and content. Thanks for taking the time.

The more I train the more I see people falling into the same patterns when they just start or are still white belts. I am a white belt myself, I've been training for 2 months only (although taking crazy overtime and probably watching way too much youtube - paid off, I received my 1st stripe 2 weeks ago :D ) and I think it's really cool to start understanding those patterns and stop falling into some of them. A video like that one helps to see that too and it is also a value. I mean you can see certain situations, you can relate to them from your own rolls and think 'I already started defending this move' this is pretty cool feeling to have that awareness :D
For example - no matter what, I will never reach up from bottom position and I will always wait for a new joiner to do it rather sooner than later :D
Thanks man, you help a lot with your tips.
    Greetings from Poland ;)

Jordan, I had my first (no-gi) BJJ class today. I'm happy to say that I prevented several arm bars by using the T-Rex arms you're so adamant about! I made sure to tell my rolling partners that it was my first day, and that I'd prefer defending. It worked out beautifully, and a much more advanced guy even opted to flow with me :) My knees are all bruised up and my shoulder is a bit sore; I'm super excited to go back tomorrow for another session! Thank you so much for the incredibly technical breakdowns in your videos. I was nervous going into my first class, and now I'm pumped to keep going and keep learning!

I love that you point out how the grips are so essential to the battle and highlight them in your exchanges. I'm just wondering how you go about teaching which grips are advisable and which are not? I notice that when they get good grips often you just adapt and move into the "counter move" (which is great for us to learn from!) and when they have bad grips you pass freely. So from the white belt perspective (in the roll), All of their grips would really just feel bad? Hopefully that makes sense.

    • @JordanTeachesJiujitsu
      @JordanTeachesJiujitsu  2 года назад +2

The grips you take are dependent on the technique you want to pull off and vice versa. Think about grips needed for a specific pass. Those are grips you should take to achieve that pass. A lot of times people just grab randomly and think about the technique after. It's a tough question to answer because everything is so situational.

Awesome! Was wondering when you'd post next! Have watched all your other videos and love your commentary as it really helps with visualization! I've finally been able to start hitting arm bars more consistently.

One of the brown belts at my academy taught me a while back about straight arms…. Fastest (but safe) armbar I’ve ever been put in lol. T-Rex arms for the W

Still making some of these mistakes from time to time, so this video is a great reminder and refresher for Noobs like moi. Hang in there white-belts! This is exactly how it's supposed to be in the beginning. Just increase time on the mats and decrease time inside your own head wondering why you suck 😅

taking notes for months but havent been able to use any tips recently as we are locked down in Shanghai.
As a white belt the most common thing I tap to is a guillotine.
The most confusing position for me is from bottom north south.

I many times get submitted with kimuras although initially, I kept my elbows tucked in and close to my chest but my training partner is somehow always able to isolate my arm with both his hands. I don't know if it's due to my weak brachialis muscles or something fundamentally wrong with my defense. I like to hear some advice/critique on this.
Great instructional videos brother, cheers and wishes.

#1 submission I get caught in is a kimora.

Man the emphasis on safety is awesome. I get so scared when rolling that my hand will get flexed all the way back (imagine your nails touching your forearm) by some dude landing on it or my knee getting twisted in a weird way or my ankle getting twisted in a weird way. Would love to roll with this guy, sick of rolling with white belts who feel the need to go ham.

I rolled with a black belt last Sunday. I’m a white belt. I think it was 4 or 5 arm bars. I’m learning this lesson. Fight instinct.

Best BJJ videos on youtube by far. How come you dont recommend to start rolling from the knees? I see it a lot at different gyms that I have visited.
