3:16 Roll down windows were replaced simply because it’s cheaper to just make all your models the same verses stocking two different assemblies.
5:52 Compared to finding a pay phone, one in your car was much more convenient.
7:39 Running boards were just holdover from horse drawn carriages, and not needed as cars got lower to the ground. But on trucks and SUV’s even now, running boards can be ordered as an option.
    - I never adjusted my radio antenna, plus some weren’t adjustable. They mainly were retracted to prevent damage at car washes.
We could use more tail fins. 😁

Vent windows were nice, and ashtrays I don’t smoke anymore but I used to put fuses and small items in them too keep them handy. T tops were fun I never had any noise problems with them but did have a small leak problem once

The reason vent windows disappeared was cost, cheaper to make a larger glass window than vents with the additional cost and labor.

Imagine a time when you were happy to simply have a car that works. Time passes, and suddenly you are 60+, watching a video telling you what features were on cars that you drove, and the reason why these features changed.

Hood ornaments were often stolen by young people wanting to use them as necklaces.

The Mercedes hood ornament was spring loaded to render them safe. As for roll down windows both of my vehicles have that in the back. My newest vehicle is 14 years old, though...

You didn’t bother telling the kid nd folks why the wood grain was there in the first lace.
It is because early state wagons actually were made from wood. And when they changed and started making them with all steel construction during the 1950s, p expletive missed the beauty of the wood, so I. The 60s for nostalgic reasons they started to use simulated wood.
Like ok at any station wagon before the 1950s and you will see that they are all made from real wood.

2:05 wraps up the discussion of hood ornaments with the wreck of a car (a 1963 or 1964 Oldsmobile) that didn't have one! Eh?
And in-car phones were never commonplace, even for the rich.

    • @michaelnance8319

I get that. But the idea or notion of the hood ornament is missed. I know almost every car manufacturer has a front logo. But it’s not the same without a hood ornament. It’s too bad there isn’t a company out there that does custom design hood ornaments on vehicles. Because I would put a aztec warrior as a hood ornament on my current vehicle. @@petermerchant4439

These features were somewhat bulky and difficult to work with but that was the beauty of them, you could work on them. Now, there are very few things that an owner can do to keep their vehicle up and running other than watch the mileage and take it back to the dealership for servicing. 😮

Luggage racks? Take a look at any new sport utility thing. Side rails for roof racks are almost universal because the blasted things have insufficient cargo space inside. Around here, the 24th of May weekend and Labour Day weekend will show you hundreds, if not thousands of vehicles with roof racks in use.
Modern cars have increased cargo space? Are you totally out to lunch? A 1990 Volvo 240 wagon had more cargo space than a new Volvo V90, the big wagon. The difference is almost 10 cubic feet. Oh, the design of the 240 first hit the market in 1967 as the Volvo 145S.
The vent window was a very useful item. They were an optional extra on Ford Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis sedan and wagon models through the end of 1991 production.
