  • Wonder Wheel at Deno's Wonder Wheel Park in Coney Island. Designed by Charles Herman, construction under Bethlehem Steel began in 1918. This unique Ferris Wheel opened to Coney Island guests in 1920. 8 cars are stationary, and 16 cars swing as they glide and rock on induvial tracks interwoven in the wheel's 150 ft. tall 400,000-pound superstructure. Wonder Wheel was operated under Herman J. Garms Sr. and his son Frank Garms until sold to the Vourderis family in 1983, where the ride underwent a refurbishment. Wonder Wheel was designated a New York City landmark in 1989. NAPHA applauds Deno's Wonder Wheel Park for continuing to operate and restore this historic and iconic Coney Island attraction.
