    • @2020Twenty
      @2020Twenty 4 года назад +35

      many times in Deus Ex, we've seen the Illuminati do terrible things. From Belltower/TYM terrorising other companies, kidnapping/killing scientists, holding augs hostage with drugs/social movements, to Everett's betrayal of a fellow Illuminatus, to Chad holding your friend hostage and lying to your face about killing her, having innocent shopkeepers executed for speaking out, and forcing the majority to live in abject poverty and lying to them about it.
      That's why I *hate* the Illuminati. That's why, even though Helios kinda sits in the uncanny valley, his actions (eg. helping Hong Kong), make me support him.

  • @KneelB4Bacon
    @KneelB4Bacon 4 года назад +631

    From an interview with the developers years ago:
    DeusEx-Machina: _What is the significance of Lucius DeBeers? Does shutting down his life support have any effect on the game at all? What was he put there for?_
    Witchboy: _I came up with the notion, for the Paris missions, of adding this evil old man, an old Illuminatus. The idea was that Morgan Everett used him as a think-tank, promising Lucius that he would be revived "as soon as the technology becomes available." Of course, the technology was already available. I wanted to show that no one (in our world) is innocent, even the "good guys." This cast a dark cloud over Everett. The notion behind Lucius was that he was the previous generation's Illuminati, sort of like the Smoking Man from the X-Files. I used the name "DeBeers" because of some of the conspiracy theories revolving around that name (Look it up...). Sadly, shutting down Lucius doesn't actually do anything other than piss Everett off. We ran out of time, or, as is actually the case in game development, I spent the time on something else, like the saboteur/Jock's death that we planned and executed at the last minute during development. We toyed with the idea of letting the player actually revive Lucius, but it was a real can of worms and he was a minor, late-introduced character, so it seemed risky (and wasteful of project time that could be better spent on something more integral)._
    Sheldon Pacotti: _He doesn't have much significance outside of Everett's hideout. Everett keeps the old Illuminati leader around in order to pick his brain from time to time and maybe to satisfy some sadistic part of his personality. I imagine that a person plotting to take over the world would have a few personality quirks. Aside from his immediate relevance to Everett, however, Lucius DeBeers doesn't really impact the game._

      Tracer Tong has the neutral ending where the clock is set back a few centuries, but the fundamental problem persists.

      @KniGhTKrawLeR9 2 года назад

      @@Scarletraven87
      None of the endings are definitively "good" or "bad".
      The illuminati ending would restore the world, for good or ill, back to a sort of guided normalcy that could be understood and even tolerated more by the general populace (at least more so than masses of people dying in the streets from a deadly virus).
      Tong's ending destroys the corrupt power structures and sets the clock back on civilization, but it doesn't really solve any of the underlying problems that caused those corrupt structures to come to power, nor does it leave anything in its wake to prevent them from ascending again.
      Everyone's favorite Helios ending is unfortunately a naively hollow, optimistic fantasy. It posits that, idealistically, humanity's aims at unity, progression, and prosperity can be achieved with the guidance of an impartial algorithm helping everyone to connect, share, and understand each other's individual needs and providing for them.
      This ending was written before the invention of social media, though, soooooo........ 😬

      I would say there’s functional justice, not only poetic vengeance, in keeping him alive and imprisoned. If he’s still trying to “COMMAND” even in suicide, then he still hasn’t been redeemed. He should be kept alive to sort himself out with only a copy of Crime and Punishment to pass the years. His illusion being shattered is just premature “enlightenment.” Cold eternity can be an opportunity to free oneself from one’s own maladaptively constructed life context.

      I already knew the Illuminati were untrustworthy scheming people who can, have, and will do terrible things in service to their plan, but I also know what their plan is. Its the late 20th century.
      Helios, by contrast, is a dark horse. I don't know what it will do. Could be great, could be terrible, and it still deprives people of their agency just like the Illuminati.
      Then there's the dark age. All I know there is that anarchy will reign and the world will be in turmoil. Personally, I prefer it and its freedom to the other two, but I can still see why the Illuminati are better in some ways.
      The Illuminati are essentially the safe option. The one for someone who's opposed to absolute control, but willing to accept anything shy of that for prosperity, or the one for someone control is necessary to guide humanity forward, but doesn't think an unknown quantity like Helios can be trusted to do that.
