  • The (many) different ways the Wayne Haas conversation can go.
Note regarding the Appease option: As far as I can tell it's there to allow you to restart the conversation with a semi-clean slate. When you begin the second conversation Haas makes a comment about seeing Jensen twice in one day, but after that it's pretty much the same as when you talk to him for the first time.

This complex conversation system really pulls me into the game, and the voice acting is awesome.

ADJAX I agree this was one of the best conversations in the game, and an example of why the Deus Ex series is more meaningful than your typical action game.

@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive especialy when you notice that every conversation has no 100% successful way to pass. I never saw such realistic confrontation designs. Here you can tell Hass that you are sorry, and try to ease his feelings, you can dismiss the conflict and try to convince him to just move on, or, put him under the last pressure to deal with past, face the outcome and forge the wounds.
And all you can do is decide what seems to be the right choice for you. Because the word truth exist only within humanity, and is not omnipresent.

It’s simple made to look complicated. Really genius from the developers. There is some psychology in all those interactions. You have to gauge the morality of the subject and adapt the response. Thee is debate mechanics really.

This is how you do conversations in games. With emotions and heart felt voice acting. This makes a mediocre game a whole lot better.

This one blew me away. I could remember BEING this man, facing the world this way. I had no idea this is what I looked like, this was what people heard and saw and dealth with when it came to me.
How can you be disgusted and heart breakingly sympathetic at the same time....

Wayne Haas a conversation with Adam Jensen.

  • @MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive
    @MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive 7 лет назад +23

It's because of this scene that aside from the prologue, I played through the game as a pacifist. Adam Jensen's previous history as a police officer who refused to shoot an augmented teenager, only to see his friend take the order, and be both thrown under the bus by officials because of public pressure, riots, and international headlines doesn't square right to me with the picture of Jensen as a cold blooded killer.
Which made the boss fights especially infuriating. I was a ninja throughout the game, stealthily ghosting through sections where I was never spotted only to expose myself in the middle of a large room with plenty of cover and be snuck up on by a mechanical behemoth with loud gears and servos. Although I can't say Barrett deserved to live, and agree lethal force was justified, I wanted to interrogate him with the rest of the Tyrants.
Federova was the worst, because of a lack of cover and hiding areas. Also she's a selective mute, and it's almost a promise in fiction that selective mutes will eventually break their silence and have something interesting and profound to say. During the fight with her, Eliza also keeps telling us tragic things about Federova's past and tries to convince us she's not a bad person. Eliza also tells us after defeating her, that we can still save her life, which Adam responds with "I'll think about it." And...Adam just lets to her bleed to death. That was completely out of character with the Adam who was persecuted because he refused to shoot a teenager, and the Adam who I played as someone who avoided murder. I also never got to hear Federova speak, which was akin to breaking a narrative promise. When you have a mystery villain, the identity should eventually be revealed and shown to be a preexisting character. When you have a selective mute character she should eventually speak! Those are unwritten rules of writing every writer should know.
Namir was the least obnoxious, but it was still stupid how he was there in plain view the entire time and Jensen never noticed him. This creates ludonarrative dissonance from gameplay that forces us to be extra observant. I was also disappointed Namir just switched to guns when the previous encounters had him going all mano mano. A boss fight made up of augmented fisticuffs would have been interesting, especially with the new patch screwing with vision. (You can still sneak up on him, and do a melee takedown, so I'll settle for that.)
Killing the Tyrants is justified, but I still wanted to spare them because unlike the previous Deus Ex games, we learn next to nothing about these bad guys. With them alive, at least we could have some character interactions. The boss fights and forced killings were a total failure in level design, game design, ludonarrative, and storytelling.

    • @MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive

@lambda30 The novel _Deus Ex: Icarus Effect_ reveals more about the Tyrants as well. That novel's characters Anna Kelso and Ben Saxon ended up starring in _Deus Ex: The Fall_ and the scene with Saxon confronting Namir and jumping out of the jumbojet was ripped straight from the novel word for word.
Some details it reveals about the Tyrants:
      - Jaron Namir was a Mossad Agent (like Anna Navarre from the original Deus Ex.)
      - He lives with his wife and children on the plane which serves as the mobile headquarters of the Tyrant.
      - His sister was killed in a terrorist attack, he feels survivor's guilt over it and named his daughter after her.
      - Ben Saxon speculated that Namir's extensive augmentations replaced lost body parts that he suffered fighting during the _6 Month War._
      - In the Deus Ex timeline the _6 Month War_ was a war in 2021 caused by Iran and a coalition of Arab countries invading Israel. Eventually the United Arab Front emerged victorious and the State of Israel ceased to exist.
      - With his family he presents himself as a devout religiously observant Jew.
      - But knowingly works for the Illuminati because he no longer believes in God after all the pain and suffering he endured. And if there's no God, then someone has to do his job to guide the world to order, that someone being the Illuminati.
      About Federova:
      - Had casual sex with Ben Saxon.
      - According to the Tyrants speaks when it's important.
I wish all or some of this was revealed in gameplay instead of supplementary story material.

It went down between HR and MD. He was apparently just trying to explore a character idea for a role he was auditioning for, but the video he made caught on and he was smeared by the press as a nutcase. That’s why Sarif was recast in MD.

Have to admit...talking him down into the ground and then trying to blackmail him with the drugs he's using being visible in the garbage bin behind him is one of the darkest moments you can get with those conversation fights. Iirc he will attack you without a chance to set things right at your appartment later if you walk that path and who can blame him? X3

It was recorded as press material before it was decided on what Jensen's accent should be. Pre-release, a lot of gaming mags and articles saw this scene and mentioned the accent at the time, so I was listening out for it when I first played it. Kinda disappointed they didn't keep it, but eh.

Wish I could edit my posts but I don't want to reply to my own. Haas killed a kid, which, besides being especially horrible, he's been left especially traumatized for it and this conversation highlights that. He feels especially guilty about it, even though he was ordered to do so. Thats one of the reasons he gets especially intense and he's especially insecure for it, it's his suffering that makes you feel sorry for him.

I steam-rolled Haas in this conversation the first time I played, and later, when he lost his job and he wife left him for losing his job, he was waiting for me in the lobby of my apartment building and he shot me and killed me.
I'd played Deus Ex before -- the first one -- so I knew about actions-and-consequences, but it was the first time in ANY video-game that my actions so thoroughly harmed the life of an NPC (outside of quick-saving and killing them), and it made me feel like an absolute asshole. He killed me, so when I reloaded from the last save, I was able to kill him, but I still felt super guilty about it.

It appears to be random. He seeks an absolution, and he does require correction. But his extremely unstable mood makes the outcome unpredictable.
He may or may not be readied to accept the direct correction, as he still is evading the liability by blaming Jenson.
He is under Omega condition, but he is still pretending to be in Alpha condition by imposing liability to Jenson.
