My mom loved this band. I can remember when the scandal broke and my mom, bless her heart, didn't give one flying fuck. She just wanted to get to see the gorgeous guys dancing in their boots and shorts. Good times 😅
I was just a kid when Milli Vanilli hit the charts in the US. They were ALL over MTV and VH1, not to mention the radio. I thought it was fairly catchy as I grew-up to the whole pop/soft rock genre influence from my parents before I went to rock/metal in my teens. I remember this whole downfall, and it was legendary.
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria Because they never sung for real. All was fake. They have been used because they looked good but in live they were lip syncing over a tape and it was not even their voices. In brief 100% fraud.
The king of RUclips doesn't know there IS a polling option?? I can't wait to start seeing absurd polls from Brain Blaze in the future... And yeah, everyone knows who Milli Vanilli was.
What always pissed me off about the Milli Vanilli scandal is the way people put it on them. By that I mean, people act as if they created these persona's, stole some songs and pulled the wool over everyones eyes. The studios and the people who created this whole act, disappeared and left the two guys standing alone. The blame was laid at their feet and the music company's didn't get the flack that they should have.
Just to be clear, I meant that Milli Vanilli got cancelled in the same way as Gary Glitter, even though the reasons were very different. And this was unfair on Milli Vanilli who got treated in the same manner as a convicted peodophile.
And they got cancelled simply by the same public who, once getting the internet and social media, became keyboard shitheads who simply love to see others torn down for no real reason. Animal instincts not quite bred out of humanity as yet.
Sound engineer, here, answering the question of "why bother to lipsycnch to your own music." It happens VERY frequently in pop music, and for a good reason that really isn't cheating or dishonest. They all do it, even Madonna. The first reason is that they always record what's called a "sick track," a recording of the entire vocal performance that's just there, running muted in the background, just in case something goes wrong. If a mic suddenly goes out you can replace the live vocal with the recording and keep the show going while you fix the problem, or if a singer gets sick and can't sing you don't have to cancel a whole show because of it. The other, much more commonly USED reason is simply because of the energy of that kind of show. Singing is HARD, and requires an incredible amount of control over your breathing. At the same time, dancing is also very hard and makes you breathe hard, out of control. It is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to perform some dance routines/sections while at the same time delivering a quality vocal performance. The way you HAVE to breathe to achieve highly athletic dancing is very different from the way you HAVE to breathe to do a good vocal performance. No human being can do both at the same time. So it's very common that during SOME PARTS of that kind of show... while Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, or Madonna are doing a lot of intense dancing... the vocals you're hearing are pre-recorded. There's nothing wrong with that, it's simply the ONLY way to do that kind of show. Can Madonna do a show without any lipsycnching? Of course she can, but it won't be anything like the Madonna shows you actually see on stage. If that's what you want to see, that's how it has to be done. Now go watch the Queen Mistress of showmanship, Tina Turner, in any live performance. She does heavy dancing OR singing, she never does both at the same time. When she's singing she gives her body every possible chance to breathe properly and sing perfectly, and it's BETWEEN the singing parts when she does her wildest, most athletic dancing.
I remember watching an interview with Vivian Campbell from Def Leppard where he was asked about the first time he saw whitesnake live before he joined the band in '88 and he said that they were so "perfect" live when it came to background vocals that he was "almost 100% sure they were using tape playback live" but once he joined the band and played his first show he was "floored" to discover that it was all 100% live and that he used that positive learning experience when he joined leppard.
.. Now I keep imagining doing a live show and having a mix of nothing but silent mouth noise & the occasional awkward off key beathe coming off hot mics of a shite band
@@Heyitsallgoodman Thank you, and thank you to those who gave the thumbs-up to my comment. Ever since I started in this industry I've both enjoyed telling people the behind-the-scenes stuff about how shows are created, and at the same time felt a little bit weird about it. I call it "showing people the puppet strings." Do you REALLY want to see the strings, or do you just want to absorb yourself in the illusion and enjoy the show? It feels a lot like telling the secrets of a magic show. (I have worked behind the scenes with magicians and had them as friends, and no, I won't tell you how any of THAT is done.) But I get over that weird feeling because I know lots of other people are like me, fascinated by the details, and being fortunate enough to be one of the few who know the "secrets" I very much enjoy sharing them with those who don't have that chance, but will appreciate the artistry of showbusiness even more when they get a glimpse of how the "illusion" is created. Plus, who DOESN'T like to tell a story when there's someone around who wants to hear it? Thank you again, and I'm glad you enjoyed seeing that puppet string.
By the way, I've finally put everything I've learned over the years into a show of my own. I'm in an '80s rock tribute band called Dropkick Turbo, we do stuff like Iron Maiden, Ratt, Queensryche, Scorpions, etc. We really put on a show, just like you would have seen those bands do back in the day. We're about to start livestreaming shows and other performances, and if you're in Georgia you can check us out sometime. Give us a look on Facebook, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks again. Oh... and there's no synching in our show. That's pop music, not rock. ;)
Fact boy your strengths for a Grammy lie not in a soundtrack, not in singing, but in a spoken word album. The dulcet tones of your voice caressing the eardrums of your audience is award worthy

There was also the time AC/DC sued the beastie boys for copyright infringement because they "sampled" the entire melody line from rock n' roll ain't noise pollution and not only didn't ask permission but didn't credit the original authors of the music. AC/DC won the case which set a legal precedent that still stands almost 40 years later.
I know this story! I owned both cassette tape and vinyl record and got a class action suit refund of like 2 bucks or something for their grand. Still loved the tunes, didn't even care that it wasn't them singing. We had already suspected Madonna of lipsyncing live over studio tracks.
Idk, Simon. Why would he go to the press and make the reveal like it's some big shocking thing if he didn't have some kind of ill intent? It was his idea... They never wanted to do it, and when they tried to hold him accountable for his word, as Danny said, he "threw his toys out of the pram." He had a temper tantrum, threw them to the wolves, and went on with his life like none of it ever happened.
See that right there is where I blame the managers. Like if they didn’t do that then fine but they basically tossed those guys in front of the bus and you know that’s not going to be good
The Monkees are not really the best example. Mike and Peter were musicians in their own right having been members of bands before being on the show. The 2 albums that came out that they did not play on, where released without their knowledge and there was a big fight in order for them to actually play on the albums and for them to get to write some of their own songs and have them on the show. They ended up touring (I think they were on tour when the second album came out) and they all did sing. They all continued to have music careers. BUT, the process that was going on with the show and the albums was part of the way business was done at the time. As for Millie Vanilli, I remember being angry when I learned they lip synced, but then, I didn't know others were doing it, so I felt I was being lied to. Regardless of that, I think ultimate reaction was kind of extreme. I don't think they deserved that.
As I understood it at the time, the anger wasn't over the lip synching but over the fact that they hadn't done any of the actual singing. And the perception that a group of experienced artists were pretending to be new artists.
@@spyone4828 yes, that was some of the issue, however, this was nothing new. Around that time four other groups were doing mostly the same thing. Also at about the same success or more successful. I think better comparison would be Marni Nixon who Ghost song for actresses in musical in the 40's and 50's Like Deborah Kerr in The King & I and Natalie Wood in Westside Story.
In the case of The Monkees, during their live concerts they actually played their own instruments. After The Monkees sitcom was cancelled, Monkee guitarist Mike Nesmith went on to record a few solo hits which he wrote and recorded himself.
I have this weird tendency to jump to the monkeys defense, since they may have started out as a manufactured band they did turn into a real band. Davy Jones could play the drums well. Mike and Peter were very skilled musicians. I mean, for fucks sake Michael Nesmith created MTV. there’s a reason headquarters is often considered their best album, it’s also the one where they had a lot of the credits for. They wrote songs, they played and sang their own music. No they weren’t allowed to play in the studio recordings, but at that time it wasn’t unusual to have studio musicians playing. I watched a whole couple of videos about studio musicians on PBS in the last couple of years, and it is very common. Heck, sometimes what we hear on the album is in part because the studio musicians had a hand in taking what was written down on that paper in front of them and turning it into something magical.
Mike Nesmith was a GOAT in my opinion and underrated songwriter. Along with Ricky Nelson, each on their own, he helped create country rock and was a pioneer in making music videos.
I had a coworker when Blame it on the Rain was popular. Her name was Lorraine and she sang that song all the time. She was in love with it and the guys who "sang" it.
Yes, Sam!! Back on tip top form again!! My cheeks ache from laughing at this one!! Danny is a legend, I’m sure he writes in a way that he just KNOWS Factboy will respond to and go off on a tangent rant. Love it!! 🤣🤣🤣
I do know the story of Milli-Vanilli, but only because I'm so old I remember it first hand. People were mostly laughing then, too. "Retracted Allegations" is my new band name.
The belch tangent made my morning. Also, Simon - I've been thinking of you and your family (I don't have any connections in Europe; you were practically my first thought, when the news broke about Ukraine)... Sending you and yours all the very best, with my profuse gratitude for being such a positive part of my life for the past few years.
The Phrase "Trap music" comes from where the music originated, which was in Trap houses in Chicago (iirc). They are called trap houses because they are usually abandoned houses at the end of a dead end street. This was so they could be better able to defend it should other people with less than legal motives were to learn that drugs where being sold out of a particular house. Almost creating a "trap" at the end of the street, thus "Trap music".
Trap house is where the drug dealers keep some, but not the majority of their stash. It is where they deal out of and its usually your "Trap queen" that is running the trap house or whoever you got dealing for you. If your trap house is raided by police you aren't as worried because it isn't your house and they only got a fraction of your stash. So by extension Trap music is a genre of music that became popular in these types of places.
“ trapping” is selling drugs, a “ trap house is a spot to sell them. they don’t seek out abandoned houses at the end of the street so they can defend it, they don’t put that much thought in it, they use whatever house they can.
@@brainblaze6526 honestly a great trap song, it's old school. It's called "the gangsta, the Killa, and the dope dealer" by west side connection and yes that's the band with ice cube in it
It always mystifies (and vaguely amuses) me that people dramatically destroy product for which they shelled out their hard-earned cash in "protest" for whatever. All I can say is that the people who produced said product don't give a solitary damn. They got their money and it doesn't hurt their feelings in the least that you feel so strongly about it that you're willing to waste your money in such a fashion.
The problem about not getting credited was because the artists that did the singing weren't making royalties at all. So they got a relatively small one-time payout while the record label got rich as hell. One reason that it's great that the music industry is being decentralized.

I'm acctually suprised Fact Boy doesn't know of Boney M as they roll out 'Mary's Boy Child' every year at Christmas in the UK and have done since pretty much since it was released, gets almost as prolific as Cliff Richard at times.
Not every singer sounds American, Simon. I'm a Canadian who sings and records and I sound vaguely british-ish, at least when I do clean vocals :) What is certainly true is that a lot of singers sound very different when they sing vs when they talk, but I'd imagine a lot more of that comes down to how they learned to sing and what they think makes their voice sound best. I can tell you my own singing voice was very much a deliberate choice I made after practicing a lot and playing around with different sorts of singing.
Mean, old, fat, bald guy here... Back when I was young and strong, and my hair grew in places that made sense, there was wonderful TV show band called, "The Partridge Family." The only voices from the cast that were ever heard on their really, very good records was the real television lead singer, the late, great, and much maligned David Cassidy, and the Mom, the lovely Shirley Jones. Every other sound on those chart-ruling songs was session musicians and back up singers. Despite the fact that Cassidy was a truly skilled guitarist, he was not allowed to play on the albums, he only sang lead vocals, with Shirley Jones doing back-up on some. They had a number of songs in the top forty, at least three in the top ten, and, I'm pretty sure, "I Think I Love You" hit number one. While a lot of people who have heard of them laugh at the Partridge Family today, the show had very high ratings for four years, and the music was really quite good. It should have been, some of the best talent in pop music was responsible for it. They were nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1971. They probably would have been allowed to keep it too. They kinda ruled the charts in 1970 and 1971. They had a board game, comic books, and a Saturday morning animated series as well. I once owned a Partridge Family lunch box. David Cassidy had a fairly successful solo career with screaming teen-aged girls filling the audiences, and a few songs making it onto the charts. Their label, by the way, was Bell Records, which I think was Arista.
I watched themas young teenager loved them. They were on after Brady Bunch Life was different then. My service dog name is Cindy. Those were the days. The world seemed more blind to the ugly things behind closed doors🤔😳

Ok, so my family's Canadian, not American, but we listened to Boney M all the time... I mean "Rasputin"? Epic! It was definitely among the albums my mom transfered from record to cassette tape that we listened to on our long car trips (like 15 to 26 hours long, depending on where we lived at the time) to visit family during the 80s and the 90s. Me, my parents, and my 4 brothers all singing along.
They weren't the only ones doing this. Dance groups like Black Box, Seduction, Technotronic, and C&C Music Factory were doing the same around the same time. Milli Vanilli weren't even the most successful at it. 2 of the 4 group used Martha Wash's vocals on tracks on hit songs.
Sam is ON FIRE today!!! *chefs kiss* The only time I heard of milli vanilli was when I was listening to a song “I’m afraid of Britney Spears and Christina Aguillera” and has something about milli vanilli in the chorus… but it’s been a long time since I listened to that song! I love the fact you just don't give a crap about what other people think, and it works because you're basically the only one here with such a carefree attitude, just blazing it up and raking it in.
I don't think that Rob and Fab didn't deserve what happened to them, so much as there are a bunch of other people involved or doing the same thing that didn't. It's unfair, but not because they were punished, but because there are many more that should also be punished that haven't been.

Richie Valens didn't know any Spanish at all, yet his most famous song, La Bamba, was sung, by him, in Spanish. He learned by memory the way English-speakers who don't speak Italian or German learn opera songs.
have you ever meet someone who ended up making their living from this? You have now. Thank you Rammstein snd germany lol. I love the band to the point i could and did teach my self how to speak fluently, lmfao to the point of my second job in my 20ies i was a german translator.
Bing Crosby was so popular with Germans during World War 2 that he recorded some of his songs in German. He didn't speak the language but sang the lyrics phonetically.
I remember when I was a kid telling a friend who was REALLY into them that I wasnt a fan cause their singing and speaking voices dodnt match I wisely kept my damn mouth shut when the house of cards collapsed
It’s amazing how much Simon doesn’t know about recent history and culture, even within his own lifetime, but I guess that’s what makes him perfect for reading these. Milli Vanilli made a guest appearance on the Mario Brothers cartoon, where they “sang” and Princess Peach jumped up to touch their hands. These two guys were EVERYWHERE.
US producer David Foster was/is notorious for doing much the same thing as Frank Farian; he even goes Farian one better by having members of the actual band record tracks for an album, then releasing a version to the record company which uses other studio musicians. There are two words in a contract - "creative control" - which let producers get away with this.
Pretty sure we the audience mostly did know at least some of the story Simon...but happy to hear it this way with all your tangents, the memes and fab script!!
I honestly don’t know how someone who grew up in the uk in the late 80s- early 90s hasn’t heard of Black Box, C&C Music Factory or even Boney M, that shit was EVERYWHERE.
I always thought the track skipping was a dumb reason to for their downfall, lip syncing happens all the time by major artist, but obviously the story goes deeper than that.
I think the reason that the Monkees were treated differently is because they weren't looked at as a band, but as characters on a TV show. But as another person commented, two of them were actually musicians so there was a lot of the same behind the scene struggles over creative control.
The monkees always sang themselves, and pretty quickly strated writing their own songs. That said, the Monkees lived in a different time, and they weren't trying to become a pop band, thy were playing a band on TV. More fakery was expected there.

Miss Simon bopping around in his socks tripping/pulling out his mike hook-up. 10 channels, standing for one can't be that bad. One of the best parts of B.B. was Simon's animation.
I remember this catastrophe very well. I didn't know the music very well, because I'm not really into pop music. But, ultimately, I think the problem was "music" versus "eye candy". How well, would the album have done if the real singers were the touted band? Also, I thought you liked diet coke more than Pepsi?
Once ordered some miniatures as a gift. Was intending to get one priced at $45. Company sent me a box of 6. They sent me an email asking me to return the other 5 Ignored the email.
People don't understand the hows and whys of using session artists. The reason Milli Vanilli used session artists was so the producer would have total control. If they had sang on the albums they would be able to take their fame with them if they decided to pack up and leave. Which we can see is very common, producer creates an brand/image/etc out of a singer and they leave after getting famous. I know someone who was in relatively popular band that people in certain countries know. This person was prevented from singing any of the music or even taking lessons in singing despite having a great voice. The whole reason was to keep everyone in the band and make sure the producer got nearly all of the profits.
You should take a look at the story of Deep Purple and all the infighting that went on between Ritchie Blackmore and pretty much every single member of the band before he left in 1975 and got replaced by Tommy Bolin (whose story is incredibly sad and tragic) before thee band finally self destructed in 1976. The funny part is that it happened all over again the Mk2 of the band (Gillian/Paice/Lord/Glover/Blackmore) got back together in 1984 which had soured so badly by 1989 that Ian Gillan simply walked out and quit levaing ritchie with almost complete control of the band which resulted in the spectacular failure of 1990's Slaves And Masters. This led band management to literally tell ian gillian that he could "name his price" in order to get him to rejoin the bandfor the next album (which he did) which led to there being so much friction within the band that everyone avoided ritchie like the plague while the ever mercurial (ie: giant asshole) ritchie blackmore stewed and stewed until he finally blew his stack at a show in birimingham england in november of 1993 and refused to go on stage "until he was ready" and just a few shows later in helsinki finland he simply walked off stage after the show ended got in his limo and never came back.
Anyone who listen to Katy Perry “sing” during the Super Bowl Halftime Show a few years ago should know that many pop performers can’t actually sign, so not sure why these two got screwed. Modern pop stars fall into the can’t sing/hot group or the can sing/don’t have to be conventionally beautiful group, which is the smaller camp.
Ashley Simpson got the flack too. This was back when the industry was still keeping up the illusion. Not only did their manager throw them under the bus but the whole industry did.
Simon, you can also get a Grammy for "Spoken Word" like doing an audio book. I feel you could easily get one, you'd just need to read The Lord of the Rings. ;-)
One was ok but they didn't sound anything like 'their songs.' They had low voices like the big men they were. Then one ended his pain and left this world- sad...

Not only was it a huge scandal when it broke, but they remained joke fodder for probably two decades afterwards. And it wasn't just restricted to the US either, because they were from Europe... but it was actually pretty hard to tell exactly from where. Their accents were just a vague, indeterminate "European."

(I have worked behind the scenes with magicians and had them as friends, and no, I won't tell you how any of THAT is done.)
But I get over that weird feeling because I know lots of other people are like me, fascinated by the details, and being fortunate enough to be one of the few who know the "secrets" I very much enjoy sharing them with those who don't have that chance, but will appreciate the artistry of showbusiness even more when they get a glimpse of how the "illusion" is created.
That's pop music, not rock. ;)

Also Sam: I'm going to adjust Simon's pitch for a joke in a different part of the video.

Like if they didn’t do that then fine but they basically tossed those guys in front of the bus and you know that’s not going to be good
Exactly. The refusal to blame Farian is what allows con men like him to flourish. His fkery didn't stop with Milli Vanilli.
As a teenager I loved the Monkees my thought that the Beatles was a flash in the pan🤔😳🙏
Sam is way into his new Uncultured Simon meme. For good reason. It's somehow beautiful.
Heck yes! I want to hear Simon's soundtrack for 'Twilight - The Re-Resurection' with Yoko Ono as the "singer/musician"!
In the case of The Monkees, during their live concerts they actually played their own instruments. After The Monkees sitcom was cancelled, Monkee guitarist Mike Nesmith went on to record a few solo hits which he wrote and recorded himself.
Michael Nesmith's "Elephant Parts" VHS was a favourite of my family's. His mum invented Liquid Paper too.
Today they just use Auto-Tune. They can do it live now.

So THAT'S how much drugs are required to create or enjoy trap music ...
Well today I found out.

RUclips does have a poll option, Simon. Many other channels I follow hold polls for the most ridiculous things.
The problem about not getting credited was because the artists that did the singing weren't making royalties at all. So they got a relatively small one-time payout while the record label got rich as hell. One reason that it's great that the music industry is being decentralized.
"Blame It On The Rain" is still one of my favorite songs. I always wanted to do a metal cover of it.

I'm acctually suprised Fact Boy doesn't know of Boney M as they roll out 'Mary's Boy Child' every year at Christmas in the UK and have done since pretty much since it was released, gets almost as prolific as Cliff Richard at times.
Rob and Fab were treated horribly and done wrong by everyone, especially that little peen who threw them under the bus in the press conference.
Not every singer sounds American, Simon. I'm a Canadian who sings and records and I sound vaguely british-ish, at least when I do clean vocals :)
What is certainly true is that a lot of singers sound very different when they sing vs when they talk, but I'd imagine a lot more of that comes down to how they learned to sing and what they think makes their voice sound best.
I can tell you my own singing voice was very much a deliberate choice I made after practicing a lot and playing around with different sorts of singing.
Got a sound cloud or anything like that? I love finding new talents
FYI, all of the members of the Monkees were talented musicians who were made to play instruments they were not familiar with just for the TV show.
They were on after Brady Bunch

2. Milli Vanilli scandel
3. Nearly everything else that is common knowledge to us normies.
I was a 90's kid, heard all about this fiasco, though I feel it was made into a bigger deal than it deserved.

I remember when I was a kid telling a friend who was REALLY into them that I wasnt a fan cause their singing and speaking voices dodnt match
I wisely kept my damn mouth shut when the house of cards collapsed
He got sued too 🙂 once Martha Wash won her lawsuit, the crooked producers started getting their comeuppance.
Pretty sure we the audience mostly did know at least some of the story Simon...but happy to hear it this way with all your tangents, the memes and fab script!!
Sam not cutting out the tangents so Simon can get more of that sweet sweet watch time!

Where is the fraud? Deception, yes, but the product was made and delivered. For some peoples' enjoyment, and others' horror.
After seeing this I need Danny to write a script about Grateful Dead and deadheads. Simon would be so utterly confused.
The Beach Boys didn't play on their own albums. They were recorded by session artists. They did play live, but not on the albums.
I already know this story but don't mind watching another video about this epic fail :)
