My mom is also against motorcycle helmet laws. She plans her cross-country trips to avoid as many states as possible that have helmet laws. She was in a crash with a car that ran a red light when she was turning into the cemetery for my grandma's, her mom's, funeral. My mom was ok, but she missed the funeral. Wear your damn helmets!
I remember when this went into effect in FL.
Had to have been a week or so later, I had a breakdown.
The towtruck driver I got was telling me about having to work a scene with a bike fatality from literally like a day later.
Glad you didn't have to plan her funeral immediately after your grandmother's.
Helmets are cool, nowadays.
Even protected by a car it's hard to trust any traffic signal without making sure that your right-of-way is actually clear - double checking your intersections and train crossings is one of those tips from driver's ed that's always stuck with me. Glad she was okay here - it's insane how little regard and awareness some drivers have for intersections, motorcycles, and the rules of the road. That helmet could save your life one day.

There were no toilet paper shortages except for the ones caused by people worrying that there would be and so buying all the toilet paper so no one else could have any.

Not completely true, people on lock down are not using TP at work. That meant more was needed for home use.
My family did the warehousing and trucking for a company that makes the majority of store brand toilet paper in our region. They were working nearly around the clock delivering because there was plenty to be delivered and even more idiots that probably are still using what they bought.
FUCKIN FACT!!! My momma STILL has tp she bought from 2020 in her garage. On my life I wish picture comments were a thing.
Yeah, if you dont ride anymore because of that accident, then it did affect you. But that's okay. Im glad you're safe, and your kids will enjoy having you around more than they will a dad who rides. My mom just lost a good friend this month to a snowmobile accident. She wasn't wearing a helmet, and her stepson was right behind her. He watched her crash, and she died right in front of him. It's really sad.
That surpasses 'tragic' & goes straight into 'traumatic' territory man. No matter how old he was, I can't imagine that that's an incident anyone's ever ready to witness, especially her son 😢

Kevin, you sneaky devil! I am a retired English teacher, and you hooked me in with your title. Dramatic irony? Really? How did the writer find enough examples of dramatic irony to fill an entire episode? I couldn't click on it fast enough. Of course, we know what happened next. To your credit, you came clean, so all is forgiven, plus you get a few points for knowing the difference between these two types of irony.

@@mariz2361I'm pretty sure dramatic's irony a type of irony that the audience knows about but the characters within the story don't know about fully as the situation unfolds. Like Romeo & Juliet was an example of dramatic irony because the characters just missed each other while executing their plan of running away together & one of them took their own life unaware that the other was on their way (I don't remember completely which order they died though, it's been a while since reading R&J) hopefully this helped somewhat

@ Good explanation and a good example. As a reminder, here's what happens in Romeo and Juliet: Juliet takes a potion that makes her appear to be dead but she is actually alive. Romeo finds her, thinks that she is dead, and kills himself with poison. Juliet awakens, sees that Romeo is dead, and kills herself with a dagger.
On Americans and high bail, not that it's enforced, but how I wish "court fees" for dismissed misdemeanor charges had rules to limit l, as I spent 7 separate nights in a police holding cell when I was homeless for my inability to pay them constantly being added to and extended, at one point reaching over $700. All over a misdemeanor "concealment of merchandise" of a 3 dollar lighter from a Walmart that specificly told the police they didn't want to press charges and only even had to call them because I couldn't afford a state ID for their paperwork. After I got my mental health treated and off the street for 4 years I decided to start taking care of it and showed up at the court. The judge dismissed the fee's of the legal axe hanging over my neck for a decade. Clean record and 5 years of having my own place now.
Well done for seeking and sticking with the treatment. It's not easy but it's worth it 💜

It's Property Tax Day here in Texas. I'm old school so I like up showing up at three different offices with long lines with stacks of cash at the last possible moment. So many people do this that the Sherriff's Office sends out deputies with shotguns to guard all the people showing up with cash. You may not know this, but Texas is not that much a low tax state. Feels good here that I dumped pure cash like a gangsta.
29:05 i always used to think stuff i saw never bothered me. Until my son was born. It took him 17 minutes to start breathing on his own. I still have random flashes of his blue-gray skin and them giving him cpr/intubating him. Hes a healthy 2 and a half year old now, but i dont think those things will EVER stop randomly crossing my mind and getting me all choked up.

Yeah, having kids changes you. I used to watch movies with sad things in them all the time. Since having kids, movies make me a lot more emotional, especially when they involve kids.

I'm convinced she did it on purpose. I've seen too much of her with Kevin Smith. She's incredibly intelligent and well read. Pretty sure it's her stab at the industry in general and just happened to be a selected single that hit well. (Though Ed Burns bit about her is still hilarious). "What if I wrote a song about irony with no irony in it?" It's just tooooo easy. I can't help but conclude it's on purpose. Especially the smirk she gets whenever someone "confronts" her about it in person.

Okay, hear me out. I have a theory the the ironic song is a commentary on "main character syndrome" and the usage is dramatic irony based on the idea that a person expects, being the main character, their story to go one way but reality, the audience, knows it will go the other.
I may be reading too much into it, but from what I gather from some of her other works I think she may be going for that.

We nearly lost my Dad to a motorcycle accident. The helmet he wore saved his life. None of that kind of garbage law up here in Canada, thank you. Hell, we have a corner house and a guy wiped out on his bike, barely missed smacking into our house. Helmet saved his ass too. I don't get this rampant need for "MUH FREEDOMZ" in the face of the most basic safety precautions. If the big bad biker gangs up here can wear them, freakin' man up and put the damned thing on.
In Canada, it's between you and public health care. There is an expectation that you help lower medical costs.
In the states, it's between you and your insurance company, should you have one.
My dad hates seatbelts and takes it as a personal offense to his driving skills whenever I wear them and I have no idea why

The problem is that making wearing a helmet LAW infringes upon peoples bodily autonomy which is really important to many people , myself included.
Personally I always ride with full face helmet and protective clothing but if some idiot wants to smear their melon all over the pavement thats got nothing to do with me and should have nothing to do with the government either.

Regarding #1... I agree with Simon, the gun owner was grossly irresponsible in this case. Guns are tools, and it makes me uncomfortable for people to refer to them as toys.
Regarding the toilet paper shortage... I remember that... People hoarded it all... it was nuts, and stupid... We never ran out because we had bought a bidet just 2 years before, so it worked out for us and we were able to wait it out. Regarding the Dollar General Toilet Paper, that would be John Wayne toilet paper: It's rough, it's tough, and it don't take crap from nobody.

Actually, the cost for care of someone in an accident without insurance in the us is generally counted as a loss for the hospital, which drives the price of care up drastically, as a consequence of not having a universal healthcare system. It's part of the reason that care/drugs/everything medical costs WAAAAAY more in the US than in countries that have their sh*t together...
And even if someone has insurance, you know who pays for the increased in claims paid out, other people taking out insurance too.
Every choice we make has a chance to impact others.. but damn that, freedoms, am I right?

Second point is... Do you leave the lid (not the seat ) up when you flush ? If so, do you ever point your face down ? if so... congrats your germaphobia is cured. The toilet paper shortage was partially artificially made as people ran out and bought huge amounts of it anticipating a shortage. But yeah. There was a 3 month period within which it was almost impossible to find toilet paper in stores and there were purchase limits.
As my supply dwindled and even Amazon had no toilet paper… people began to google reusable toilet paper replacement. Thankfully it never came to that in my house.
I knew a fellow that wrecked his motorcycle by striking a guard rail in a high speed turn. Fortunately he was wearing a helmet. When they found the helmet they discovered his head was uninjured.

As someone who is incredibly pro-gun that first woman is a moron. I’m a single dad. My guns are locked up safe, and my daughter was taught gun safety with gel blasters taught From age 6 so that if she ever saw one of my guns she knows how dangerous they are and how to remain safe around them. It is your duty as a gun owning parent to ensure your child’s education with these tools as they can be incredibly dangerous when you are left ignorant.

Commenting on the first story: I live in the US. In my state, the only thing you have to do buy a handgun is be 21 or older, and pass an automated background check. Meanwhile, to legally drive a motorcycle, you have to have a license to drive a car, and then pass both a written and a skill test.

So where I live there was not really a toilet paper shortage, but since there was a rumor of toilet paper shortage, some people started stockpiling it. Since I didn't want to take a part in the frenzy, I kind of waited it off to replenish my stock. …Well guess what ; a couple weeks later when it became urgent I ended up having to buy a pack of four rolls of super expensive toilet paper after looking for 3 hours because that's the only one I could find.

It’s not that destroying evidence is a lesser crime, but that if a defendant destroys evidence, the court is instructed/allowed to assume the evidence would have shown what the opposing side says it would have.
Unless the evidence shows a much worse thing than what you’re accused of, it’s more beneficial to not destroy it.

I've had ptsd, flashbacks, random bouts of anger, guilt, constantly removing the event. Fucked me up for a decade. My therapist also said i have "repeated vicarious traumas" from my job in emergency medicine.

RE: helmet laws - Michigan also no longer requires helmets, which I think is stupid.
I mean, among other things, think of other people who might be involved in an accident that results in death or serious injury due to the lack of a helmet, as well as the EMTs & other health & safety personnel.

I don't know if they do this in other states, but when I went through driver's education in California, we were required to watch video compilations of some of the most gruesome traffic accidents, ostensibly to encourage us to drive safely. I vividly remember one video of first responders cleaning up a wreck where where a man's head had literally cracked open on impact, and his brain and the top half of his head were thrown out of the car while the rest of him was still inside.
I don't think they're allowed to do that anymore, or they can't compete with what most of them already see on TV. But I remember those, ours was something about Prom Night 🤣

My partner and I were listening to the news about toilet paper shortage in the U.S. We live in a town where t.p. is made. Went grocery shopping and burst out laughing. T.p. everywhere! Wherever there was a bit of floor space that wasn't needed for pedestrians and workers, there were pallets piled high with the stuff.
