Yeah, I knew this idea would be polarizing, as it is quite an unconventional approach to a live-action adaptation (& it won’t ever happen, so it’s just a discussion), but the main point is: do Native Americans find value in Disney’s fictionalized version of the character? Is her presence within pop culture an important enough form of representation to keep her around? If that’s the case, do you think Disney should do some course-correction with her?
I think the only way that Disney should approach doing a live-action Pocahontas (other than not doing it) would be to do it in the modern magical realism style that you pitched or maybe something similar to the animated film "Where is Anne Frank?". Otherwise, I don't think Disney has any business even attempting to retell the Pocahontas story. Let Native American filmmakers tell the story through a studio that isn't Disney. Part of me once thought that you could maybe do some bizarre Mel Brooks-esque satirical parody approach to a live-action Disney Pocahontas (maybe from someone like Taika Waititi), but that might be too edgy for even Disney and could easily go wrong without the input of Native American voices.
I think the real reason why poker want is she was created as a Disney version because they wanted kids to understand the native American culture so this is why but so they could understand the history of native Americans but Disney Disney they don't do animated to be educational they just make fantasy animated movies or live actions so now it's Pocahontas is the problem that we cannot her romanticize her story in the fantasy way they should do another native American princess or reimagine it will be a great idea but I'm not native American but I can understand when it's about real life historical events 0:01
There is a film called "The New World" which tells the story of Pocahontas more accurately. The interesting thing is that Irene Bedard (pocahontas' spoken voice) played Pocahontas' mum and Christian Bale (Thomas' voice) played John Rolf. Disney could use that film as an example or inspiration if they ever decide to give their Pocahontas the live action treatment, and if they do let's hope John Smith has an English accent this time around.
This couldn’t possibly work without being dreadfully inappropriate & offensive. One, the power imbalance is disturbing. Two, you can’t retell history to fit your own narrative. Pocahontas was a child. She was a victim. Disney wouldn’t dare tell the truth, but they should.
I think it’s such a fine line with Pocahontas to make it more respectful than the original while also not making it so different like Mulan. I’m sure with the right writers it would work but where Disney is right now I’m skeptical if they could pull it off.
I always think that Disney's the least known, underrated animated films would work in live action better than remaking already well-known ones. Such as Pocahontas, Treasure Island, or Atlantis The Lost Empire etc.
Love this idea, but I think it needs to be less complicated. Go with the opening you described but then have the student fall asleep and the Disney Pocahontas story is the one she dreams of. She then wakes up to the teacher finishing the telling of the real story and maybe a pan to show tears in the student’s eyes. Enough said. The viewers will get the acknowledgment of the inspired story vs the real story and the tear(s) shows the sorry and shame for what happened that can never be made okay. But we still get a fantastical Disney story.
I’m not Native American, but Pocahontas meant a lot to me as brown girl representation. Yes, there was Jasmine, but Pocahontas was free and the world was her playground. She and Mulan were important for me growing up. I would love an updated take on Pocahontas.

as a indigenous American, I see where ur coming from; but it’s just not good representation. I used to like the movie too, I loved Pocahontas and she was my favorite Disney princess. But I can’t pretend what happened to her didn’t happen. She was kidnapped, r@pped, and killed by the white settlers. And seeing Disney create a romantic relationship with her and her childhood predator is vile. Even Aladdin had better representation than pocahontas.
As a Native American we find Disney's representation of her whitewashed. They romanticize her kidnapping, made that racist savages song that the "villian" or colonizers chant, and she was never a princess to begin with. Now we have yt children wanting to be Pocahontas but don't know the true history of Matoaka because of Disney's whitewashed version. Then yts want to call Native Americans "too woke" or crybabies because we are tired of our history being sugar coated about what really happened to our people. Matoakas true story should be told by her people, and not turned into another whitewashed live action movie
I like this idea! Very creative! I agree, Indigenous creators would have to be in charge of this film. If not this idea, I think it would be great for a live action film to introduce a new Native American character based on a legend or historical figure that takes place pre-colonization
I just want a Disney live action film with *two* leads of color- both TLM and Snow White, while marketing their leads, have white male counterparts. I’d love if it focused on Poca and Nakoma pre the first movie and just focused on their culture and we don’t even have to watch colonization

sounds like a good idea, but if they’re going to be going off of Pocahontas the movie then they will have to acknowledge the movie, the inaccuracies, the sexualization, the white savior-ing, the use of colonial journaling as source material, all the killing, r@ppe and abduction, and literally turning away the powhatan nation when they offered to educate them on Matoakas real story; that sounds like a lot of stuff that Disney doesn’t wanna talk about
I am about 50-60% Native American and since I was born and grew up with this film, I absolutely adore Pocahontas. She is my favorite princess and the wisest. She brings such a special energy to the screen. Unfortunately, I understand that this film was not 100% true to the story but who really knows the story? There are documents that others wrote on or about her but nothing from the Powhatan people( not that I know of- please correct me if I m wrong.) I don’t know if there was a better way of making this story that would still be acceptable for children to watch because it contains true racial issues. With that being said, Disneys Pocahontas was super important for me growing up. She is A Disney Princess and a known role model and demonstrates courage and wisdom that is admirable. Representation is very important .
I think the best thing Disney could do in terms of Native representation is to simply create a new Native princess. They could create a new story that would take elements from their version of Pocahontas.
Absolutely not. I don’t even have to explain the obvious reasoning behind my answer either. This isn’t something Disney should EVER touch again, regardless of their intentions. (Which were already so terribly misplaced upon the release of the original film).
There’s a huge part of me that thinks Disney would have completely avoided the problem of romanticizing her story had they literally just named her something else from the start. The movie is sooooooo on its own path that her actual story that if she were any other name in the indigenous world and John smith wasn’t “John smith” this would just be a I’ll be it problematic Disney movie but it would be far less the point of contention it is. Like why didn’t they just come up with original names for the animated film? They could even have said “it’s loosely inspired by facts from her story but it’s largely a work of complete fiction” then it would just be a bit racist and we’d actually be able to revisit this movie while also being socially conscious about it all. Like aghhhhhhhghhhjhhhjjjh 90s ignorance 🤬🤬🤬🤬
@comicblossoms well the source material for the movie was John smiths journal records of his trip abroad, where he not only talked about his incredibly romantic relationship with the 12 yr old, Matoaka, and how she saved him from the “savage Indians” who dared to welcome him to their nation, but also how all the Indian women were fawning over him and asking for sexual favors; what a wonderful kids movie
As the narrator of this brilliant film, have you thought about actually writing a letter or sending an email to the Disney corporation about making a live action adaptation of Pocahontas with exactly the plot/perspective cos as you said it could win academy awards etc plus it may teach small children and adults alike about how to be more respectful to each other and learn to take responsibility for their actions in what they do or say.🤞a film does get made.
I am native american and I think a live action pocahontas COULD work if the couple that is being focused on is Pocahontas and Kocoum and how their love is never fully able to flourish because if the tension between the Powhatan confederacy and the English settlers
It’ll be another Mulan if they don’t make it loyal to the source material (i.e the animated cartoon) they could always just put a disclaimer before the movie saying this is not indicative of what really happened.
Sorry, but this sounded terrible me. I'm still giving your video a like for trying and there are bits here and there that are good, but overall, it's a hard pass. If Disney were to remake/reintroduce Pocahontas, just tell her story but have the Disney elements of being fantastical as a coping mechanism/escape from reality when things get too hard. Like she finds a quiet place and sings to herself whenever she witnesses or experiences something that's too hard to handle. Especially because she was a kid, if i remember correctly. Hell, maybe what i just typed just also a bad idea lol but i just don't want to experience Pocahontas like Princess Bride. I love Princess Bride, but that's all fictional. Breaking from the history to remind us "this is fiction" repeatedly wouldn't be fun, whereas with Princess Bride it was a grandson and grandfather interacting with each other.
Is not right that tv and movie American never show native or indios people. USA show afro, chines, Indian But not native American why? It's very sad We are in 2023 And they don't have respect
I'm normally on board with your ideas for rewrites or remakes, but this one just misses the mark. This is a story Disney should absolutely leave alone. Hell, they never should've touched it to begin with. Her story's been disrespected enough over the years. If a film about Pocahontas is ever made again, it should be a historical drama that actually tells her story, bleak though it may be. The poor girl suffered too much to have her legacy be fabricated fanciful stories of magic and romance when her real life had none of that. Your proposed film would just add to that problem, I'm afraid.
It’s not worthy to do such film. If The little mermaid and Snow White are being this headache + flop, Imagine Pocahontas! It doesn’t have half of the appeal of the other 2 films and the discussions about racism would make it worse. I really think that the general public is tired of live action remakes of disney. Maybe it could have worked in 2010-2016 but the world has changed.
Disney can also make it up to native Americans to tell them how they should tell their story to the public why can't they reimagine a new Disney princess that is native American?! 0:01
Yes, it's based on a true story so why is it so " hard" to rebrand her fictional character that aligns more acutely with the truth in a respectful way.
I feel like Pocahontas could work as a remake, with the right people, of course. Honestly, I watched this video a while back and keep thinking about who I would cast as Pocahontas and so far have come up with Jashaun St. John. And for your version, maybe I'd have Pocahontas' original voice actress, Irene Bedard play the teacher and as for the middle school girl, I'd say an unknown but if I had to pick someone, I'd say Kiawentiio. This is an interesting idea and I do think that it would really be unique and thought-provoking.
That's too big of a stretch. Disney should either tell the real story of little Pocahontas, without the songs and romance, or just leave it alone. They won't risk another backlash...
If they could do this with the live-action Mulan remake, I don't understand why they don't want to do it with Pocahontas? They can do it. They just don't want to do it.
@@gerawallstar3487because Mulan didn’t exist. Mulan was a poem in Chinese culture. Pocahontas was an actual person. They can’t get away with it like what they did with Mulan. They announced Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Moana live-action. That leaves Brave and Frozen. Disney is either going to move on from live-action princess remakes or bite the bullet and make accurate live-action Pocahontas.
I enjoy Pocahontas since I was a kid but I am not native American but I can understand the tragedy of Pocahontas but Disney could always reimagine a new native American princess because they can come up with many ideas they could talk to native Americans and explain how they should tell their story and not in a fantasy weigh when it's about their history 0:01
Amber Midthunder can play Pocahontas. Jay Tavare as Chief Powhatan and Wes studi as Kekata. Irene bedard can play her mother or grandmother willow. Robert Pattinson can play as John Smith. Jason Mamoa can play Kocuum. Tim Roth as Ratcliffe. Tom Holland as Thomas. They should use elements from the first and Journey to the new world. Daniel Ratcliffe can play as John Rolfe. Simon pegg as King James. Rosamund Pike as the queen. Miranda Richardson as mrs Jenkins. Dakota beavers as Nakoma’s husband. They can still use some historical accuracy but retain some fantasy like the spiritual elements. And we should see a longer war section with Powhatan’s tribe and Ratcliffe’s men. I think we can see a younger Pocahontas in the film in first 40 minutes and she sees John Smith and crushes on him and later she sees him again as an adult and learns that John Smith has a conflict between siding with her people or his men.
Disney could've made this a less controversial version so easily: 1. Make it fictional; no real names, time periods or locations. Allows for an original Native culture and colonists. 2. Throw in some fantasy elements. The original film was 90% grounded in the real world except for spiritual moments. It'd also give the story more action and visuals. 3. Make the John Smith character not a racist. I know it's his character arc to overcome his racism, but many people dislike that part of him. Maybe make him like Thomas where he's inexperienced and is just going based off what everyone tells him.
I would also maybe think Disney could do a Pocahontas mini series. They’ve done some short stories with her since then, and I think a mini series showing Pocahontas living her life with Natives, her moments with grandmother willow, Nakoma, her father. Maybe some conflicts with Jamestown and bringing peace. That could right some of the wrongs from the movie and add some more historical context in an educational way but keeping it kid friendly. Also Native Americans must be directing, writing, and in charge.
As much as I would love a live action, her story is just too tragic and the history is still affected. I like your idea, but Disney would need to have Native American directors, producers, writers, actors, and make sure they do it the way they want it with this idea. The New World in 2005 was a well done movie, told the story is a gentle way. So maybe they could do something like that.
Honestly, even if by some magical bs they could POSSIBLY create a script that could potentially work, there's no way Disney would touch that in this day and age (and no, not because of whatever the right will say). Let's face it, that's one story that would have to be told on such a fine line that any wrong move, and it could destroy that film. There's just no way to make a live action remake of this individual work without doing a lot of changes. If they tried even attempting to go the animated film route now that modern audiences have a far better idea of the true story of the individual, it would be extremely offensive and possibly come off as a form of racist. If they tried to stick to the true story, that could be way too adult for kids.
Late to the party here, but I wanted to say I LOVE the idea of Pocahontas saving Smith, but saying "I can't look past your history of terrorizing my people," because one of the things we NEVER talk about with the OG film is that even in this sanitized version of her story, Smith is still contextualized has being famous for killing Natives, and Pocahontas ends the movie NEVER knowing abt this! Completely prepared to be killed for him... In theory, I feel like elements of your idea could work, but only if they were introduced as an indie film made exclusively by Natives, but idk if they would find this idea ethical, tbh. In any case, we're never going to get around the fact that DISNEY will be profiting from this movie, and frankly we shouldn't even entertain the idea of Disney getting awards for this... especially since the OG movie is known for being made almost exclusively with the goal of appealing to the Academy. This is why showcasing Song of the South for education/not erasure purposes can prolly never be fulfilled, no matter what, Disney will NEVER do something for free. Im no scholar or expert on Pocahontas, but I have spent a lot more time than perhaps most Disney fans analyzing the historical context around the film. I think the problem is just too multilayered and complex to ever justify making any type of adaptation of the Disney film, or even perhaps a one to one historical record. The real story is in its bare bones, about the psychological and physical deterioration of a little girl with the backdrop of her people being ERADICATED, and the only reason why the PEACKEEPER narrative even exists, or is embraced, is because white americans want to cover their ass. I believe it was Chief Roy Crazy Horse in an open letter to Disney that called their film "self-serving", and that Euro-Americans should find this story "embarrassing." Even as a life-long, giddy Disney's Pocahontas fan, I can't help but wholeheartedly and sincerely agree with that sentiment.
Interesting ideas, but I don't trust Disney to take a thoughtful approach! Remember Frozen II! It's a complex issue Disney shouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole!
I believe that Pocahontas can’t be properly persevered as a fictional character, and can’t have a respectful live action remake or any remake at all; unless Disney is willing to produce a movie that centers around a young girl who was kidnapped, r@pped and killed by settlers. The movie, without the context of who it was depicting, made it appealing to its audience as no one knew of the horrors that Matoaka had lived. I was someone who loved the movie Pocahontas and I enjoyed most of the movie, but I can’t anymore, especially as someone who is indigenous American. It’s not just about inaccuracies and sexualization, as gross as it is in this movie, the powhatan nation still has to have this be their representation. With all the MMIW that no one pays attention to, along with the dark history behind this movie, gives it a very uncomfortable layer of ick. I’m not saying to erase this movie, to pretend it never existed. I want it acknowledged, I want people to see who Matoaka was and what her nation suffered, people to need to listen and learn from the ignorance in the film industry. Pocahontas, no matter how any producer spins it, is not a fictional character, she was always based off of Matoaka, as that was the name the colonists gave her, before they forced Christianity on her and changed her name to Rebecca. Calling Pocahontas a fictional and attempting to recreate or reimagine the movie is erasing the real person of who the whole movie was based off. I’m disheartened by what I learned about pocahontas but there is no salvaging this story. That’s not to say there can’t be a indigenous American Disney princess, if Disney chooses to write a proper story involving real tribes, that is culturally accurate, with a fictional princess then I’m all for it; it my sound like a talk order but believe me disney has the money for it. As well, the powhatan tribe had reached out to Ron Disney during his time producing the movie informing him about the inaccurate portrayal and inappropriate sexualization of Matoaka in the movie, they offered to help educate them on her real story and their culture. However, Disney completely shut them down, stating that the movie was accurate and respectful, though their source material for the movie was John smiths writings from his time abroad; in which he also wrote of many Indian women fawning over him asking him for sexual favors. Lovely stuff Disney, but hey, I’m just an Indian.
Let’s be real…Disney has been making live action versions and correcting a lot of flaws that were acceptable during the times that the films were made…not doing Pocahontas is like saying it’s ok to correct ignorance…but only if you don’t address the core of the ignorance….Pocahontas shows the magnitude of comfort that came with the acceptance of whitewashing or culture grouping as long as it painted Caucasians as a group out well during its time…and the truth about how this country came to be being expressed through Disney’s expression of Pocahontas would be a milestone…the falseness of it in itself created a huge push in people really understanding how ugly colonization was…but Disney telling this story in its trueness would create a major breakthrough in the construct of racism just through the power of nostalgia alone…I’d say disney may need to partner with another studio to express the cruelty properly…but bypassing it is like giving a pass to the real destruction of whitewashing
Ugly dua Lipa shouldn't be cast to play poker want us but I get what he's trying to say because every time they're going to come up with a live action Disney movie they will race bend pick any cast to play a character that we love so much just like The little mermaid so I think Disney they should stop with this Ray swapping not just Ray swapping birds characters swapping and reimagining it for no reason@@DanielOrozco-r7k

What Disney needs to due is retire the Pocahontas character and remove her and all the merchandise and introduce and brand new Native American Disney princess in cgi and make her an empowering female heroine and it should take place before the English colonization that would be very special and amazing please Disney we need a new indigenous princess.
Love this!!! I had a similar idea for Disney’s “Hercules” remake : it opens in a school with some kids narrating the Hercules myth as a class project. Those kids fill the role of the Muses, and their narration transitions to the “Hercules” world. And them being kids gives an easy excuse that they wouldn’t know the full real Greek myth , maybe they did poor research (could be a commentary about online misinformation) . So Disney wouldn’t have to change the movie’s plot that much.
Personally, I think the Disney Pocahontas princess needs to be retired and replaced with a brand new Native American princess that doesn't have to be named Pocahontas. They should do a CGI Native American legend original film with a native America princess named Amitola or Aiyana who is a strong female princess just like with the Disney film Moana. They should have it take place in the 1400s before the European colonel era. But the Pocahontas 1995 film that Disney produced, they need to put a label warning on it on Disney Plus. I did watch other non-Disney Pocahontas films like the Living Scriptures version or other cartoon versions and they did attempt a better job at trying to be more historically accurate and tell her actual story. Also, I think the Pocahontas merchandise that Disney is making needs to be discontinued since I think it's very disrespectful of Disney to make money off of Pocahontas since she suffered so much in her life and replace it with a new Native American Disney princess like Amitola or Aiyana.
Actually pocahontas was like me at my age wild but Gentle her hair should be summer black brownish blonde red pocahontas mean beautiful reddish orange white skin

I am native american and I think a live action pocahontas COULD work if the couple that is being focused on is Pocahontas and Kocoum and how their love is never fully able to flourish because if the tension between the Powhatan confederacy and the English settlers
this!!!!
It’ll be another Mulan if they don’t make it loyal to the source material (i.e the animated cartoon) they could always just put a disclaimer before the movie saying this is not indicative of what really happened.
They won’t be get away with it. Pocahontas was real person
USA show afro, chines, Indian
But not native American why?
It's very sad
We are in 2023
And they don't have respect
I'm normally on board with your ideas for rewrites or remakes, but this one just misses the mark.
This is a story Disney should absolutely leave alone. Hell, they never should've touched it to begin with. Her story's been disrespected enough over the years.
If a film about Pocahontas is ever made again, it should be a historical drama that actually tells her story, bleak though it may be. The poor girl suffered too much to have her legacy be fabricated fanciful stories of magic and romance when her real life had none of that. Your proposed film would just add to that problem, I'm afraid.
Woah , They might play fire with controversy if they release the Remakes
I am more excited about this video than any other video in a long time on RUclips.
Excited for the discourse!
Difference Pocahontas did exists unlike Ariel and Snow White.
I always love live action Pocahontas.❤
Finally SOMEBODY is talking about this topic
Disney could've made this a less controversial version so easily:
That will not work. Everyone knows of Pocahontas and what the English did to her.
AGREED! i’ve been saying this for years
Some of these ideas could work. The Thomas and Nakoma characters can work.
Hope they make live action
As much as I would love a live action, her story is just too tragic and the history is still affected. I like your idea, but Disney would need to have Native American directors, producers, writers, actors, and make sure they do it the way they want it with this idea. The New World in 2005 was a well done movie, told the story is a gentle way. So maybe they could do something like that.
Lindsay Lohan movie in 1991
Movie my girl (1991)
Yeah of course.❤
Yes and yeah live action Pocahontas.❤
I'm curious how many have seen 2005's The New World and what they think of it
I think we join in Disney live action Pocahontas 2024. No cancelled
Yeah of course live action Pocahontas.❤
I believe it was Chief Roy Crazy Horse in an open letter to Disney that called their film "self-serving", and that Euro-Americans should find this story "embarrassing."
Even as a life-long, giddy Disney's Pocahontas fan, I can't help but wholeheartedly and sincerely agree with that sentiment.
About shay mitchell playing pocahontas in the live action let me know ???????????????????????????????????
I agree that it should have a live-action adaptation, but introduce her differently.
I would totally see it.
Let’s be real…Disney has been making live action versions and correcting a lot of flaws that were acceptable during the times that the films were made…not doing Pocahontas is like saying it’s ok to correct ignorance…but only if you don’t address the core of the ignorance….Pocahontas shows the magnitude of comfort that came with the acceptance of whitewashing or culture grouping as long as it painted Caucasians as a group out well during its time…and the truth about how this country came to be being expressed through Disney’s expression of Pocahontas would be a milestone…the falseness of it in itself created a huge push in people really understanding how ugly colonization was…but Disney telling this story in its trueness would create a major breakthrough in the construct of racism just through the power of nostalgia alone…I’d say disney may need to partner with another studio to express the cruelty properly…but bypassing it is like giving a pass to the real destruction of whitewashing
yes
Dua lipa needs to play pocahontas if disney is planning to do one
Hell no dual lipa is Anglo not Native American.
Dua Lipa she's not just Anglo-Saxon she's not full British she also has Albanian heritage just like Rita Ora it's not really a good idea is dua Lipa was cast to play Pocahontas she should play another Disney princess 0:01 @@DanielOrozco-r7k
I want live action Pocahontas.❤
@osmanhossain676 if they ever do a live action Pocahontas I think Jace Norman or Nicholas Hamilton should totally play John Smith.
What Disney needs to due is retire the Pocahontas character and remove her and all the merchandise and introduce and brand new Native American Disney princess in cgi and make her an empowering female heroine and it should take place before the English colonization that would be very special and amazing please Disney we need a new indigenous princess.
Yes it could work dianey pocahontas live action yes ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍
Maybe another studio could do a Pocahontas movie, Disney would find a way to make it bland.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dee ee we ree we e d e❤Derrrdd
You should be a writer for Disney
I want live action Pocahontas and she better not be White Princess
I love this idea. What a great way to retell Pocahontas story. I hope Disney sees this idea and does something with it
You were doing so well in the beginning of the video, then you still found a way to whitewash it😒
Personally, I think the Disney Pocahontas princess needs to be retired and replaced with a brand new Native American princess that doesn't have to be named Pocahontas.
Let me know If dua lipa needs to play pocahontas in the live action film and what other disney princess dua lipa will so good at ????????????
Sorry that now I'm things dua Lipa play Pocahontas she is not native American it will be like a punch in the face 0:01
This idea is so good
Actually pocahontas was like me at my age wild but Gentle her hair should be summer black brownish blonde red pocahontas mean beautiful reddish orange white skin
