- Pocahontas Reaction is today's video!
Hey everyone! Join me as I watch Pocahontas for the first time as an adult! This movie has a lot of meaning and the animation is breathtaking!
This is the Disney animated tale of the romance between a young American Indian woman named Pocahontas (Seong Yujin) and Capt. John Smith (Lee Jeong-gu), who journeyed to the New World with other settlers to begin fresh lives. Her powerful father, Chief Powhatan, disapproves of their relationship and wants her to marry a native warrior. Meanwhile, Smith's fellow Englishmen hope to rob the Native Americans of their gold. Can Pocahontas' love for Smith save the day?

Even though this movie isn't historically accurate, I've always loved the overall aesthetic, music, and theme of spirituality. Great reaction!
Same
the ending scene will always get to me, the music, her running, the goodbye, the wind and leaves. So much built up. I love it. Such a great movie and very refresing not to have them end up together.
It’s such a beautiful ending…but at the same time it’s so bittersweet…😢(This is why I like the ending for Avatar better even though they are both similar but I won’t spoil the ending for anyone who hasn’t seen it…but I would recommend going to see Cody’s reaction to Avatar if you would like to see it!)
@@noelleanglade1412 yeah, I love Avatar! ❤
@@waterhorse_httyd657 me too! I loved Avatar and Avatar: The Way Of Water and I can’t wait for the next one!
@@noelleanglade1412sadly, it's gonna be delayed, but I hope it will make that worth waiting even more!
@@waterhorse_httyd657 I know...but I definitely think it will make all that waiting for it even more worth it!
If people can accept Anastasia being 95% fictional then they can extend this film the same courtesy. It's Disney. It's well written even if it isn't true.
I can agree to that. I never paid attention to historical accuracies when it came to Anastasia or Pocahontas. I just enjoyed the films for what they are and had fun with them.🙂
Anastasia was speculation, because for the longest time nobody knew what happened to her. Finding her body was a recent development.
@@videohistory722 there are some claims made about Pocahontas that are still speculation today as well.
Another movie that’s not historically accurate but very enjoyable is “The Greatest Showman.” 😁
@@GenkoNoMiko It was inaccurate in the exact opposite way Bohemian Rhapsody was. The Greatest Showman made the lead look like a misunderstood hero, Bohemian Rhapsody treated its lead poorly because the people alive to tell his story had a grudge against him.
Disney: “This isn’t a war movie.”
Also Disney: *Makes Savages a total banger of a war song-*
They never said that 😂
Ok, but how much of the movie this song and this scene do take actually, for real? Like 2 or 3 minutes, maybe 5 minutes at most, for a whole 90 minutes of a feature film in total, pretty much? Seriously, come on...
Sure this may not be as “accurate” as the actual story of Pocahontas, but at its pretty to look at.
The ironic thing is the A list team at Disney wanted to work on this because they felt it was going to be better than the other movie that the B team got....that movie was the Lion King
This fate surrounding Pocahontas not being financially better than The Lion King repeated in the 2010s with Big Hero 6 being overshadowed by Frozen’s popularity.
Lion King is extemely overrated. It's good, but so many other Disney movies are miles ahead.
Both are absolutely amazing
And they where right Pocahontas is leagues above the lion king, want proof look no further than the live adaptation of both movies, and compare box office
Pocahontas was a Native American woman, belonging to the Powhatan people
And Pocahontas was her nickname
Despite its historical inaccuracy, this movie is indeed very beautiful, makes me tear up repeatedly no matter how many times I watch it, and has one of my favorite Disney-soundtracks. Kocoum's death always makes me sad, all in all he was a good man and I think he and Nakoma could've made a really good couple. The ending always gives me chills. The sequel however.. I want to like it, but I just haven't been able to rewatch it after seeing for the first time years ago. Maybe I should take the bull by the horns and finally do so soon, but let's see.
Thanks for this reaction!
I love the message behind the song “Colors of the Wind” it’s so beautiful.
Thanks for reacting to this movie, I get the whole historical inaccuracies but it's Disney and they have a habit of changing stories. They usually do it with fairy tales but Pocahontas was a real person. So this was more historical fiction that depicted English settlers taking over the lands of Native Americans. Plus it was funny that the creators wrote John and Pocahontas to be like Romeo and Juliet despite the massive age gap between the real people who I hope didn't engage in a romantic relationship.
They actually did she was basically married off to an English man in her time which she was definitely still a Minor during that : quick edit she and john Smith did have a relationship but second movie is who she actually ends up with in real life
They didn't had a romantic relationship in real life, it was more an "uncle-niece" relationship
I don't know if they really cared back then to be honest when it came to the romance.
They usually do it to mask the true ending. Because honestly, the only story they remade that had a happy ending for the protagonist was Cinderella
Pocahontas is my favorite Disney Princess. She’s really the first princess to show true bravery and courage. Also, it was the first Disney animated classic to have an interracial relationship, even if it was exaggerated historical fiction. It hurts that because of over sensitivity (aka cancel culture) we may never get a live action Pocahontas. Solely because it has way to much chance to have trolls pick it apart and call it racist. Yes I know the original has racist themes but if anything John and Pocahontas’ message at the end of the movie proves racism will never win. It’s defeated. Still have my fingers crossed for an epic live action of this heroine!!
This really is amazing movie, Pocahontas herself really is a legendary and awesome woman. And her legacy will never be forgotten her memory will always live on forever.
Indeed.
It's the issue that she's remembered for being a beautiful woman in Disney and not the first murdered and missing indigenous woman
@@destinym4349 Not the first. Many tribes before hers were completely eradicated by the British. She's famous because she played a role as a diplomat for the natives (disputed if it was willing). She wasn't even murdered, she died of syphillis.
@@demo2823 I thought John Ralf killed and raped her!?
Yay! It's good to relive childhood movies and GREAT when they hold up, and this one certainly does.
As navajo ourselves, we appreciate just hearing you mention our people's name ^^ knowing some know about us makes us happy. And your kind respect to the native americans is appreciated as well. Love you even more Cody! Lots of hugs to you!😊
The real Pocahontas eventually traveled to England, but got ill due to the climate, and died aged ~21. However, through her only son there are thousands of decendants to her. ❤️
“Whoever made her, telling you, they did the right thing.”
The lead animator on the character Pocahontas is Glen Keane, who previously animated other Disney characters such as Aladdin, Beast from Beauty and the Beast, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, the Bear from The Fox and the Hound. And he also animated the title character Tarzan (which is my personal favorite), Silver from Treasure Planet and Rapunzel from Tangled.
It is so refreshing to see a reactor who doesn't harp about historically inaccurate it is every five minutes. As someone whose favorite princess is Pocahontas, I thank you for enjoying it for what it is, a masterpiece of a movie not a documentary.
I wish they still made traditionally animated movies, too, man. I was born in '84 and grew up on these Disney Renaissance classics along with Don Bluth and Fox Animation's _Anastasia_ and _Titan A.E._ They made me want to be a Disney animator and had a HUGE influence on my drawing style.
Unfortunately Disney started shutting down their traditional animation studios in 2003/4 during my freshman year of art school (at a Disney recommended school, no less!), but it turned out okay. I became an illustrator instead and love what I do, but I still miss traditionally animated films SO MUCH.
You asked what tribe Pocahontas was a part of. She was a member of the Powhatan Tribal Nation.
The song “Savages” is underrated! It is so true, just because they are different they are thought to be savage! Such an awesome song!
fun fact: an early version of the song had to be changed because it included lyrics that were Deemed too harsh and offensive
@@marlonclark1896 I would believe that!
@@marlonclark1896 The original version is on the soundtrack and it's quite powerful. Only about three lines were changed but it definitely has a lot more bite and really sells how horrible Ratcliffe is
The real story of Pocahontas was waaay darker.
Pocahontas was only 11-13 whilst John smith was late 20’s early 30’s!
And if I remember correctly they weren’t in a romantic relationship.
Good then that this movie is a good fiction, and the real ones aren’t alive now. So yeah🤔
Yes, she saw him more as an uncle or older brother figure. The whole romance between them was invented by writers in the 1800s. She married John Rolfe when she was older thankfully. Her exact age isn't known since her birth year is only estimated, but she would have been around 18 when they were married.
My paternal grandmother was Kiowa and after years of watching Native Americans being portrayed in stereotypical and bad light, she cried tears of joy when she finally saw animated characters that looked exactly like her when she saw this opening day. She knew very well that it was completely fictional but she was so glad that she saw many of the cultures that she grew up with being portrayed in a positive light.
I love the score and I also love the pop version of "Colors Of Wind" sung by Vanessa Williams.
Me too.
10:51 - 10:58 I love it when grandma willow tells everyone yo shut up and then looks at that frog 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love how she looks the frog 😂
In France, she's voiced by the singer, Annie Cordy, who later vouced Tanana in " Brother bear "
This movie was one I loved as a kid I remember my mom drawing me a picture of Pocahontas in full color I still have it to this day it brought me to tears with how gorgeous the animation truly is I really don't mind the inaccuracies of the film it still touches you while watching it great reaction man I am loving these
This was one of my favorite Disney growing up. “Colors of the wind” is my favorite song. The ending always makes me cry to this day.
colors of the wind is insanely good
When you get older you realize that Pocahontas' mother's spirit lives within the wind and at the end, she helps push John's ship home. Paired with the song "Farewell" I think it's one of the most moving scenes Disney has ever made. I cry every time. I wish more people gave this movie a chance.
The ending gives me chills every time. The Disney chorus vocalizing ‘Colors of the Wind’ and John Smith waving goodbye despite him saying that he liked “hello” better.
Some people find problems with everything on earth. This movie is a beautiful masterpiece.
I can't believe they cut the song 'If I never knew you' out of the film. Its my favourite one!
I wish Disney+ would give an option to watch with it included back in, because it makes the film even better
Very colorful movie indeed. When I was little I would compare myself to Pocahontas because of my hair and skin color. She was my childhood favorite princess.
This is one of my top 5 fave disney movies! I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it, the music, the story and the characters are just great. The inaccuracies, while big, are nothing new to disney, nothing disney does is 100% accurate. They usually use fairytales though so I get that their use of historical fiction isn’t for everyone, but it isn’t a documentary and it still teaches a message that a lot of people could stand to learn today
One of the things I've always loved this movie for is the fact that the dudes name is "John Smith" which was my dad's name 🤣 even now I watch it and giggle to myself like a child just like "lol it's my dad"
Dat's an unusual name for dese parts.
I mean, historically it's inaccurate. But It's still a timeless gem. 🙃
Definitely one of my favourite Disney movies! Glad you enjoyed it!
Greed is an interesting emotion/motivation that both historically and this movie show. Example when Cortes colonized Mexico and Central America his men didn’t even consider the idea that the natives have no real use for gold except for decoration and/or religious reasons but thought that they have a ridiculous amount of gold somewhere
Virgin Mary helped the heart sacrificing natives stop.
It's also very spot on in showing that wars usually get encouraged by someone at the top who would profit off the conflict, and rather than killing each other, we'd be better suited trying to remove the person from power who's pitting us against each other for their own profit
3:01 The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed!
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost!
They were looking for gold because the Spanish found gold. But they didn't know Spanish found gold in South America, a completely different continent
As Someone Who Is Part Native American I Loved Your Respect Towards Native Americans And Their Culture And I Loved Your Reaction For This Movie
You are 100% right about the classic animation style. It was way better than today's CG, 3D garbage. We need this classic style back
I had a pocahontas party, but it was just the decor and then we watched the movie after eating cake. this movie as a child inspired me to care more about the planet and getting closer to nature. Use to run around my backyard barefoot and and when the wind blew i pretended it was grandmother willow sending me a message
I’m a Métis woman,so I’m not sure what to think of this movie. Their habits remind me of the indigenous peoples of BC. The indigenous referred to white people as the pale faces
I haven’t seen that movie yet but I most of the time I see scenes part of the movie
As a Disney Baby, of course I love this movie, Historical inaccuracies aside. Thank you Judy Kuhn and Irene Bedard.
To think that Jeffery Katzenberg thought that Pocahontas was gonna be the goat film instead of The Lion King back in the years of development. Boy, was he dead wrong!
Didn’t fate repeat itself in the 2010s with Big Hero 6 being overshadowed by Frozen’s still growing popularity?
@@twist58 Honestly, I didn’t even know that happened. Both films are measurably great in comparison. Though, I suppose Frozen would be the better one in terms of popularity.
Thomas didn't just shoot Kocoum due Ratcliffe's orders, but to save John Smith, who was a friend and kinda like a father or older brother to him.
An amazing reaction to such a very valuable Disney film! I really would like to see you react to a sequel Pocahontas II: Journey To A New World just to see how they introduce John Rolfe, the man who actually married Pocahontas. Ironically they had a son named Thomas. Another amazing Native American film aside from The Indian In the Cupboard, which is also a great film if you haven’t seen it, is called The Sign of the Beaver or Keeping the Promise. It’s story about a young boy who is left to guard his family’s claim of land while his father fetches his mother and siblings. He meets the nearby Native American tribe when he was rescued by the chief. In exchange for saving his life, the chief persuades the young boy to teach his grandson how to read the signs, English words on paper. The chief who saved the young boy is played Gordon Tootoosis who voiced Kekata the shaman of Pocahontas tribe in this film.
🍃🍂👩🏻❤️👨🏼🐶🦝🌲
There is a movie about a bounty hunter guy who takes in a white girl raised by native Americans. I don't know if that has good cultural elements or whether it suffers a little too much from the forced whiteness when the girl could have just as easily been an actual native
My brother couldn’t stop thinking about this movie pretty good songs though
By the time their hands part to the very end I’m bawling 😭 the music is so emotional and beautiful. Classic Alan Menken!
I really miss old Disney movie… every movie have their own unique style
3:01 The weather started getting rough!
The tiny ship was tossed!
If not for the courage of the fearless crew!
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost!
I love this film so much, deffo one of my favourites. My tattoo is a more detailed version of Pocahontas’s armband tattoo. I always educate people about the true story of Pocahontas. 100% agree that things might have been better had the Native Americans been left alone. The comment “these white men are dangerous” has to be the most distressingly accurate comment ever, in every film this happens! 😂🤦🏻♀️. The Native American’s beliefs, culture and people are fascinating and beautiful 🍃 ❤️ xxx
As a native american glad u appreciate our culture and A'he'hee which means thank you. Always enjoy your reactions to movies
Disney renaissance films just blow me away with animation and music. I had a phase where I was bothered historical inaccuracies but then I grew up. I love my Disney films and if I want historical accuracies, I watch documentaries or borrow book from library (yeah, I am old school)
I just got to meet the singing voice for Pocahontas, Judy Kuhn, at my local Comic Con. Tomorrow, she’s singing Colors of the Wind in her Q&A session. ❤️
You did ? It's incredible
@@a.g.demada5263 Yep! Although my time with her was short, she said her favorite part of singing for the movie was being with the orchestra in the 90’s because it was so good.
@@bethanyromano2740 yes, I can imagine. I'm french and I don't know if there's still people who voiced characters in old Disney movies who are still alive.
We lost the boss of the french voice act two years ago.

Pocahontas is my favorite Disney princess since I'm a little girl. I remember being jealous of her beautiful long hair 🤭
Her physical appearance is inspired by Naomi Campbell's.
Even if I haven't see this movie since years (and I watched it in french) I remember of all the words. My favorite song is the one where we see the Indians for the first time (I don't know the title in english)
That is 'Steady as the Beating Drum' :)
@@BetterWithBob thank you but honestly, I prefer the french version of this song
Disney's Pocahontas is one of my favorite movies.
The Navajo tribe is located northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah. Pocahontas tribe was the Powhatan tribe their allies were the Algonquian tribe and the tribe they fought against were the Monacan tribe.
Well I'm glad you enjoyed it👍.
Either Meeko was banging the compass out of curiousity or that he might find something edible inside it, like a walnut.
Grandmother willow is metaphorically supposedly Mother Earth as a conceptual metaphor for Mother Earth a spirit of many spirits that were born trough Mother Earth like in the natives' cultures believe they don't pray to a God like we do in Church; they say father of the world and also father sun at times too and along with Mother Earth who created us all. So, I always had a theory that Grandmother willow was just playing a big part of Mother Earth.
Something I like about Savages. The light paints the colonists in the “hellish red,” and the Indians in the, “Milky white,” it’s basically saying both sides were as bad as each other.
Both sides hated each other but I am definitely on the indians' side. It was the Europeans who came to steal land and ressources and treated the Indians as garbage.
The line is "Milky HIDE," not "Milky white." Plus, they actually toned down the Colonizers' part... from "Their whole disgusting race is like a curse," to "Here's what you get when races are diverse." and from "Let's go kill a few, men," to "Let's go get a few, men."
@@ChaoticButterfly I know it’s Milky Hide I just was using it as a way to mention the lighting telling the story.
@@SplendidSuperman122 Ah, you meant the actual colors, not the lines. My bad.
Note to self don’t make the tree mad.
Song name : "IF I NEVER KNEW YOU"
I remember that DISNEY CUT OUT this Song from the first viewing cause kids didnt quite like it. And it was only a few years ago I discovered this piece of info and immedieately looked for it~ like damn~ my whole childhood missed one great song~ "
36:48 not her mother’s necklace!
I don't really like this movie, but Colors of the wind is my all time favorite Disney song.
"So you'll save John Smith but you won't save Thomas, huh?"
I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and say that's because John Smith grabbed a rope first, and Thomas didn't have a chance to do that. So they could save John Smith without jumping overboard, whereas Thomas...not so much...
A lot of animators left lion king to work on pocahontas cause they thought pocahontas was gonna be the crown jewle of the rennaissance but that title definately goes to the lion king disney's highest grossing film
Honestly, I love this movie! I just think they shouldn’t have assumed they were bad people.
Theres a theory about what you said if native americans were allowed to just develop on their on pace that usa would now be just like finland. Finns and natives were very much alike and even got a nickname "just like us" from the natives. The original finns still chill on the original spot they landed on in little finland. We have saunas, they had steam tents, the forest spirits and gods, the certain animals that are holy, everything was the same. Damn shame we didnt get to see it but fate is still one of the believes finns and native americans shared.
I think Disney should at least be given a clap on the back for portraying Native Americans as more than a caricature (unlike a lot of media of the time), and showing the evil of greed and colonisation for what it really was. Not to mention how the upper classes spread blatant lies and misinformation to corrupt the public into believing the natives were the aggressors. The overall message against racism and prejudice I think makes this a very important movie to come out in the mid 90s, regardless of it's fast and loose play on historical fantasy.
Cody captain John Smith is a soldier
Most of these settlers were soldiers
What’s funny is that this film was made by Disney’s animation A team and this was thought to be their biggest hit. While their B team was working on Lion King.... We all know which of the two won out in the end.
Why? Probably cause of the touchy subject matter and general awkwardness most people probably had. Not sure how accurate that is, but that’s just my guess.
35:35- ALRIGHT! THAT’S ENOUGH! (Dogs Paused) 🤣🤣🤣🤣
At this point I think this is a great movie this one is one of my favorite movies disney wise
I mean this as a good thing I meet this one native American women that could look like she could play Pocahontas in a live action movie well the lady looks more like the cartoon version, not the real Pocahontas
If anyone read this the Navajo mostly lived here in New Mexico area
This is one of my top favorite childhood's movies. But when I learn the truth of what really happened to Pocahontas it's not for the faint of heart. But yeah, this is a good film and beautiful music and backgrounds. It is a nice cartoon. But the Disney covered up a lot of the truths of what really happened in history of this story. like every story since. Lied to make it child friendly to cover up the really horrible stuff. But either way I liked this reaction, I liked this movie lots. Thanks for sharing it with us.
They've done that ever since the original Disney movies all the fairy tales and real legends and stories are really dark even mulan
Grew up watching it and has always loved it and love the savages song and i find the real life story really sad in my opinion
I loved this movie as a child and it sticks with me as an adult. I'm a mixed child and I didn't see many mixed couples or racial conflicts before this movie. It has a good message about perception and judgement that reminds me to look at other peoples perspectives. It also did a good job of showing how people use fear to further their goals and agendas, sadly still relative today.
On another note, Kokum's death always disturbed me as a child. Something about it made me really uncomfortable and I would fast forward it until I was in my teens. It's the Disney death that effected me the most.
Very understandable. Kocoum is the first human to die on screen in a Disney film (animated at least)
Savages does a great job of making you feel the escalating tension between the two sides
Thanks for reacting to my favourite Disney movie (besides the inaccuracies) the meaning of it is much more profound.
It would be amazing if you reacted to FernGully: The Last Rainforest or The Secret of NIMH, if you haven't watched them, you'll definitely love them.
Cheers from Spain!! 😃😃😃
i absolutely love that last line of colors of the wind, "u can own the earth and all you'll own is earth"
I'm glad you enjoy this movie. I also love this movie growing up.
It's my favorite Disnay movie❤And the best ending - this relationship would never work , two different worlds and native need their chief . Sorry for that man , he could be a good husband 🥲
Omg yesssssss my favorite Disney movie ever
I LOVE this movie i don’t know why it’s such an underrated movie that’s what i’ve heard people say. But in my opinion i love this movie Mulan and Pocahontas are like my fav movies i don’t care if people think it’s underrated i freaking love this movie. Thanks for reacting to it.
I just watched Pocahontas 2 last night and it was amazing. You have to watch it!
I absolutely love your Disney reactions Cody! I think you should check out (even if it's just on your own time) the deleted scene and song from Pocahontas called "If I Never Knew You". It's beautiful and completely animated but when they tested the movie with child audiences the kids said they didn't really like it, so Disney cut it out completely
I have chills every time I hear the music or see a scene of pocahontas, I was obsessed with the protagonist so much when I was a child I always try to imitate the way pocahontas walks when she is squatting (you know in the scene when she is watching john at the river) and now as an adult it still remains my favorite disney movie of all time.
I also remember thinking "oh how cute pocahontas and john are together" but growing up now Im like "why did she choose john? Kocoum is soooo much hotter than him" lol
I’m 30 years old and this movie still makes me cry rivers. 😂
Critics back then were pretty divided about Pocahontas due to the historical inaccuracies, but unfortunately they failed to realize that wasn’t the intention of the filmmakers of this movie.
Not to mention, there was a special edition of this movie that not many have seen or are aware of. It was never shown in theaters, only on DVD. The “If I Never Knew You” musical sequence during Pocahontas’ meeting with a captive John Smith. It was fully animated already, but removed due to test audiences not liking it. Made teens swoon, but kids were bored.
"John Smith is the most acrobatic dude I've ever seen"
And he's doing it in a plate mail cuirass
The ending is my favorite part just absolutely beautiful❤ and great reaction!!! Can't wait for more!!!
I saw this movie in the theater when it came out and the colors and music were really moving. It’s not the most kid friendly Disney movie, but it’s pretty and I like it. Another beautiful Disney movie is Sleeping Beauty - my favorite
This is something some people must know columbus did not discover America. The Native Americans did because thet were already there when they got there.
People always talk about how unrealistic pocahontas looks, but I have a friend who looks so much like her, it's not even funny. She's one of fhe most beautiful people I have ever met. Totally the pocahontas face.
And Pocahontas was basically modelled off her voice actress Irene Bedard. If you look at the making of special that Irene hosted, you see that in the 90s she looked almost exactly like her
I like to think that this is similar to the movie Anastasia. It was about a person that was real but the movie introduced an interesting thought process for me. Just like this movie too. It’s not accurate but it makes me want to research the real characters. The behind the scenes of making Pocahontas is very interesting to watch. The voice actors are Native and enjoyed making the movie it seemed.
Tarzan is my favorite 90s Disney movie!
