  • I share an update on life doing remote work. 4 months and I'm really enjoying it but.... turns out remote work has its own downsides too. Remote work can be isolating and lonely when you spend a lot of time without interacting with other people.

I work remote and the key is to plan lots of stuff outside of work to do. Volunteer groups, running/biking clubs, sports leagues, starting/joining a band, going to local fairs, etc.. If you’re in a city, then theres also undoubtedly coworking meetups where you hang out with people during the day at a cafe or wherever and work.

It’s so much harder that way. It is so much easier to make connections with people when you’re actually on a physical team with them working together. Meeting random people and bicycling groups or whatever is very difficult. Difficult to even make friends like that, forget about girlfriend.

Great video. You mentioned not knowing how much of the loneliness is related to the pandemic vs. post-college life. I'm a bit older than you, and my observation has been that it's mostly the result of the pandemic (and maybe social media, too). My post-college life was much more social and much less lonely than my post-pandemic life today.

I really relate to this! I just started working remotely for 2 months now and it has obvious benefits of flexible hours and no commuting but I've been feeling fomo from not being in the office. I also agree with your thoughts on the disconnect we feel moving into working life as I graduated last year and now the world seems alot bigger but also more empty but it's up to me to change that... thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

i feel this so hard. graduated 2019, working in tech as well. i’ve never been particularly career-focused, but i feel totally adrift in remote work. i was in an office for half a year before covid hit and i miss seeing people in-person during my workday. even if i wasn’t making friends with everyone, it was at least *something* during my mandated eight-hour workday. now, i just feel like there’s an absence there.
i live in a small city where it can be hard to meet people, which probably partially contributes to my woes, but i feel like a narc for saying i’d rather be in an office right now, haha.

I work from home for the last 3 years, since the pandemic started. It's a call-centre job where I constantly get abused by the "Karens" and "Terrys" each day and also have to put up with some rude and arrogant team leaders whenever ever I ask questions or assistance. This job really opened up my eyes about people. Once you stay in a job for so long, you tend to see the ugly side of people. People that you thought were nice to you in the beginning are not really nice at all. Then I also realised that in life everything changes; nothing stays constant. People come and go. So many people that I know in my workplace had already left the job. My mistake was that I dwelled onto my misery and not noticing that time continues to move forward and doesn't stop for anyone. My motto in life is to embrace solitude, and always strive to better myself and to focus on myself than on other people.

This is really rather relatable, I like the way you think. I graduated from High School at 16, I got a Full Time White Collar Job about a Month ago, and I'm now 18. And I have to say, my Years between School and Work I was very independent, driven, and disciplined. Initially this Job was supposed to be Onsite, and I was looking forward to that adventurous aspect of it since I've been Homeschooled all of my life (And never leave the house or get to have friends). But then I realized they would have me working almost fully remote (Welp, more years working in the house).
You are definitely right in the way that having this extra time, we don't always spend it as efficiently as we would like to (I have that Inner Capitalist too). I certainly have spent 60% of this time on RUclips and AI rather inefficiently, when all this time I have had a Movie Project to that I could be working on. As you said, finally having a Job can make you a bit too comfortable, I am definitely experiencing that as well. When you mention the speed of life being really fast the first 17 years, that is also so true, I was in such a rush to study, get certified, and get a Job. But now that I have, it feels like the world just stopped.
But you are absolutely right when you say "In the end it comes down to discipline and getting out of our comfort zone to really live". Absolutely. I like how you don't go like "We're doomed", you get down to the common sense solution. Hearing you is just what I needed to reinforce my drive to get back in the fighting spirit.
Anyway, really good video, I like you so far, you're a good common sense working man, I might have to subscribe.

Thank you for this video, it's ironically made me feel less lonely knowing that there are other people in the same position who feel the same way. I, like you, have made it with a great job. I really related to your words around feeling like you're stagnating. University had constant goalposts, and for the first time we're all out in our own world doing our own thing. By most measures, I am successful, yet I still feel so envious of the people my age who are working at bars, or travelling, or both! You're right though, our life is in our own hands, and it's up to us to put ourselves out of our comfort zone.

I totally agree with you man. Remote work is really not ideal, especially for young people. I work remote, but I know another department that is hybrid and I am so jealous of all the relationships and friendships They all have that they got from the job. You used to be able to take a job in a new city and meet a bunch of people and make friends and start a whole new life, it is much harder now, because a lot of desirable jobs are remote. I could go on much longer.

Thats crazy b/c I am having same thing where I am remote but I just moved to new state so it is kind of boring. I think sometimes it would nice to do a hybrid method but then I think it might just be revisionus history. I think remote work forces you to have to get out side your comfort zone which is good!

Can relate 100% to pretty much everything you said. I also graduated in 2020 and it’s been hard making friends outside of work, especially with remote work.
I like the fun tease at the end of the video, excited to see what you’ve got planned about moving to a new location. I actually did something similar haha, I tried the digital nomad lifestyle at the start of the year and lived in Europe for 3 months. So if you need any tips or advice about traveling, let me know. It’s a lot of fun but a big learning curve too.
Since then, I’ve moved from my hometown in Florida to Los Angeles. I’m still at my Florida remote job (which I really enjoy) but feeling extra lonely in LA. Thanks for talking about this topic, it’s nice knowing that we’re all out here going similar issues. Just gotta stay excited about the future, learn new stuff, and meet new people.

I too feel lonely when working remote. Although I think it's another thing for me then just remote work. I live in a quite remote village, where it's hard to find friends that like the same stuff as me. I literally got no friends. But that is usually ok, I have a family with three kids and a wife. But from time to time I feel really lonely, I sometimes think about starting to stream programming and maybe some old games, just for fun.

I love your honesty! I was forced back to the office, people here in Brazil think working from home is not really work. Anyways.. I also struggle with making new friends, connecting with the ones I already have etc. Little by little we make some progress. I think in the end we should just try to see more the progress we've made rather than how much we have yet to achieve.

I’m not seeing anything new or having any new interaction. I was actually pretty depressed during the pandemic cause my life was only work. Now I’m starting to put more effort into creating a social life outside work. The thing you realize real quick when you get into your 30's is that whatever you expected life to be like turns out to nothing like it. People change for good and bad. You loose friends and it becomes much harder to make new friends as you get older. People get far busier with family and you rarely will see them other than major events like birth, death and weddings. Don't need to sugarcoat it. That's the reality.

I'm in marketing for a small start up saas company remote. i am the youngest member of the company, 24, grad in 2020, and there's only 10 other people in it, and they're mostly retirement age or parent age. So I'm not close with any of my coworkers. Yes the extra time is put in my hobbies like art and roller blading but it's mostly for self-entertainment as most college friends are starting to get busy with their own lives as well. I'm thinking about going back to my childhood roots of doing volunteering work like I did back in grade school hopefully to meet new friends but I doubt I'd ever meet people my age doing volunteer work, most are either clubbing or partying still while I grew out of that after college.

At the end of the day, this exercise teaches us that, in many cases, looking terrible in public isn’t as bad as we believe. Sure, we might get some looks and giggles, but these don’t hurt, now do they? The Cynic philosopher Diogenes of Sinope used to sleep in a barrel on the streets, walking around in ragged clothes, ‘pleasured’ himself in public, and insulted people who walked past him. He didn’t care what people thought of him. Therefore, no one was able to hurt him.
