- In April 2020, 70% of American were working remotely, according to Gallup. Today, that share is closer to 56%, even though 61% say they prefer working from home.
And now, workers are quitting their jobs at the highest rates in 20 years -- in fact, it's the highest rate ever reported by the BLS. Four million people quit their jobs in April 2021 alone.
Tens of millions of workers have learned how to work from home during a pandemic. Soon, they will need to learn how to work from the office during a pandemic. CNBC Make It spoke with futurist Amy Webb and Google's VP of People Brian Welle about what the return to work will look like.

Why Working From Home Is Here To Stay
The fact that people can skip morning and afternoon rush hour has improved mental health exponentially.
The fact that elderly , essential and first responders are out working while young people get to work from home . Work remotely and take hybrid days all while accumulating PTO and have full medical coverage not having to drive to work and risk contact with other non vaccinated workers sounds fair .
@@scsclassics young people aren't the only ones working from home though...😂

I will quit my job if they ask me to return to the office. I love working from home full time. I am way more productive from home. It's perfect work life balance. The daily commute was awful and I don't miss it.

@@mikewhite2686 Employers have been outsourcing overseas for decades. Had they wanted to do that they would have already.
@@mikewhite2686 Well perhaps yes. I guess if they do that then it won't matter at all what people here do. Meaning once they outsource the argument about working from home or office will be moot. There will be no job at all for that particular American.
@@mikewhite2686 You could say the same thing about if we returned to the office. Whether or not we're WFH or an office is irrelevant. They could still just go with people overseas since it's cheaper.
I will be working remotely until I retire, for the next 20 years. I don't care if that means I leave companies who request my office presence. Work from home is a better fit for me and my productivity, so I'll now be structuring my career moves around that as well.

That is a privilege that I don’t currently have. I’m working into increasing my IT knowledge so that I can.

@@eddydreni they can outsource whether you work at home or not. It’s more about why force an employee to get up earlier, sit in traffic and go into an office if they can the same job at home and be more productive.

The real conversation that needs to be had is pay and benefits. Its divide and conquer, companies generally prioritize shareholders, so they dont want employees to get together to demand fair pay, time off, and benefits. In countries where pay and such is openly discussed like Europe, pay scales are fairer, people get 5+ weeks paid vacation, and are more productive as well as loyal to companies, despite working slightly less hours(although they are less burned out and acheve more). Working at home has too many benefits

I quit my job and got another one that's partially remote. I was commuting an hour to work. Went into the office, was told I had to shut my door, wear a mask, and do the exact same job I was doing at home. Why would I want to travel 1 hour to work, just to be locked in a room for 9 hours, plus 2 hours commuting to do the exact same job I had been doing for a year at home? The problem is the companies are invested in their real estate. They've invested too much into their companies buildings. They're going to have to rethink their structure or sell their assets. No one wanted to go back into the office. I was the first to quit, and as soon as I quit, the manager said "if you guys need to work from home a few days, just let me know." I told them the reason I quit is because I hate the commute. I would walk by people in the hallway and say hi, they would just ignore me and keep walking. I'm a friendly, social guy and I understand people are upset, but you still need to communicate to one another. I don't care if you work in office or at home. But the choice should be there to do either or.
Lol workers think they set the rules. I own 3 businesses and I don’t allow work from home. You don’t wanna come in for work, you’re fired simple. I pay high salaries and non of my employees have complained or quit due to work from home.

This time has really proven that productivity and working environments are not one size fits all. None of my coworkers are in the same office as me, and most are in other states. When I went into the office 5 days a week pre-pandemic, 90% of my day was spent on video conference calls anyway. Now I don’t have to commute an hour every day, I’ve saved so much money on gas and food, and my mental health has improved considerably. You are correct. For me, I was able to focus on my work without seeing the bs I saw everyday from other coworkers not doing what they are suppose to be. The concept of office buildings is outdated, pre-internet, pre-cellphones. Those were the times when people needed to work in an office because it was easier to communicate in person, and all company documents were paper documents saved in huge files and folders in office vaults. So, downtown office towers were built in all major cities. If cities were built today, we would not have a downtown office district with skyscrapers filled with office cubicles. If you think of apple as a company the first thing that comes to mind is the donut Shaped HQ for some this might be an inspiration for working harder remove the flashy HQ and you are left with no perception of the company. I think the reason companies are trying to get us back in office is to maintain and solidify their image as a company.
The question really should be why people started working in offices in the first place.
Beyond the obvious jobs that need people in spaces, why contribute to mass commute issues, traffic, time pressures and all the hullabaloo?
WFH for those who can, office for those who have to.
This idea that we must be herded to maximize productivity is unreal and all you have to do is remember the human race didn't make it here by working in offices
What? The reason why working remotely is an option for certain American workers is because of the technology ( technology that simply hasn't always been there ).
because executives like to keep an eye on workers. but of course if they're keeping eye on workers, then they're not actually doing anything productive themselves.
@Muad'Dib the flaw is that you can't monitor thinking. That's why established companies lose out to startups.
Because work could not be done remotely. There was no wifi or high speed internet like we have today.
@Muad'Dib companies care too much about how often you type rather than what you're actually typing.
I started a side online business during the pandemic and I am thinking about leaving my main job to go full online. That is the only future I see for myself…
i did it 6 yrs ago.. pursued my hobby , turned it into a business and never went back. You can do it
One down side is that employers might hire from overseas since it might cost less for them.
@Jason Clark Before they wanted in person workers at their office location. How would overseas employees do that?
@@Andrew-it7fb I work from home but they still require we go in twice a month actually most places do that hybrid so overseas still can't compete with that
most of it are hybrid
I might want to work remotely permanently because I simply hate sitting in traffic. Time is everything to me and I don't want to waste time sitting in traffic when I could just roll out of bed and start working.
The morning commute is the worst part of everyone's day. That alone takes years off of your life. I think a lot of people were delighted to not have to drive into work and drive home every day.
I work for a Canadian Public organization. I've been WFH since day 1 of the pandemic. I have zero interest in returning to the office, but my employer wants an hybrid model.
Once competition heats back up between companies in any given sector, they will each be trying to figure out how to get ahead. That could very well mean slowly phasing back into everyone going to the office 5 days a week. Think of ad and marketing agencies for example. Clients will gravitate to the ones willing to do in-person meetings and be wooed with client dinners, drinks, etc.
Any company that doesn't give their employees the choice to either WFH or come into the office is going to fail.
They have already failed.
It depends on the company and industry. All fail? No.
@@S2Tubes I would say it depends on the industry for sure. You can't build ships or make burgers from home. But the majority of industries have shown that their work can be done with remote workers. No one should be forced to do a long grueling commute into an office if their work can clearly be done from home. If the worker want to commute into the office and work from there instead of WFH, it should be their choice, not by force. Hence my original post.
Anyone who has a job that can be done remotely can be easily replaced. Be careful for what you wish for.
@@jimziemer474 best comment so far. People should look at this from many sides. Remember we lost manufacturing jobs to China as employers figured out they can make use of cheap labour in that country. A similar thing is going to happen to remote work. So be careful what you wish for.
This felt like a campaign to come back into the office....Everyone I know here in Austin that has been asked but not forced to go back has like 3 people show up out of hundreds. If you do individual work I think let them work when and where they want to. Most people outside of managers don't actually collaborate all that much so it doesn't make sense to have everyone come in just to do what they would do from home...
Staggered schedule: A = Mon, Wed, Fri. B = Tue, Thur. Traffic problem solved.

@9:20 If you’re on a Zoom call why would you be wearing masks?
It is beyond me why companies need to force a certain number of days in the office using the collaboration excuse. I absolutely despise being in the office and it slows me down immensely. It is time companies recognize that each person is different and can focus under different circumstances. If a company is still forcing even a hybrid workstyle it is a huge red flag, ask your employees first and give us our lives back! Enough is enough!

WORK FROM YOUR COUCH OR BED
It's so sad that these companies treat us like children.
I love working from home, it means that I don't need to drive 40 minutes, I don't need to waste money on fuel. I am more productive and relaxed, since I get to sleep an extra hour. I am an introvert so I'm not interested in office socialising. I can change the lights with my phone so that I don't have to sit with the headache inducing office lights, I get to stay in comfy pjs, and hey CEOs what's wrong with that? I no longer have to worry about my balls sweating in office trousers. Why can't they understand that literally, going back to the office is going to make me a less efficient worker.
Can we install a shock collar on CEOs and activate it each time they say "collaboration" to justify forcing people to come into the office?
They just want to see u
Get in your face and control u.
Going to a 3-day workweek from an office and a 2-day workweek from home (or wherever you want) doesn't really satisfy both sides. Those who want the socializing may have a few days of that, but people will still try to be away from others some. Those who want to work from home (because of viruses or because of comfort) end up having to go to the office more than working from home. Also, if this change happens even in the future, people in the future won't understand how we got to this point, this hybrid home-office work.
That nervous smile after she said viruses will continue to be present says way more than this video was intended for
This is great. Here in Mexico City plenty of people is going back to their native states, cities, towns, close to their families. Lots of people I know were living here only because of work. Now that they work remotely they can go live near their families. There's also the people who either had to rent a grossly expensive department to be close to office, or drive, use public transport, for over 2 hours to reach the office.
Companies will find out they can save lots of money by not renting departments on a corporative building, with all the services they had to provide.
I think giving people the option is the right move. Me personally I get more work done at the office less distractions.
People?
I'm getting into IT. I will start working at an office and eventually look for WFH.
That's exactly what I'm doing
Even before the outbreak
welcome to IT my friend, currently working from home as an IT
@@Brucelee89896 first i need to get enough experience from deskhelp lol then change companies and go from there. Rinse and repeat until i get that WFH position
I also changed to IT about 3 years ago :) Good luck dude :D
I find it hard to believe that an equal percentage said that they don't care where they work.
Great content 👍
I work in apparel and my company was set to go back in Sept but there was major pushback - apparently I was the only one who didn’t request to cont. to WFH lol so they are allowing a hybrid schedule that will need to be submitted and approved (which sounds like there is potential for most to be completely remote indefinitely)
Keep people who can work from home, let them! Some of us essential workers have to communte still! Less congestion and save more energy!

Agreed! I never done it but I love it when they were working from home. Not as many cars on the street and I was able to get a seat on the train, now I have to stand on it since it's crowded.
I love how the title contradicts the video's intention with the google guy. Nice try
In Australia where the housing market has created an intergenerational gap in ownership, younger workers have been pushed further away from the city centres. Since we're gonna become the majority of the workforce pretty soon, working from home should stay.
Even though the pandemic has been rough on a lot of people, I think employers are about to learn how little leverage they have keeping people working for them when they can literally do the same work at home and in most cases be more productive.
They hate that because lately this a a talent market, not a business one. All of the companies wants the top talents working for them and after this covid stuff all of the top workers are going to ask for WHM or just quit. They will find a Company willing to pay them the same and give them home office.
SOOOOO .....LESS IS MORE???
Working from home has been an absolute dream considering my introverted personality. I am 1000% happier working from home and more productive
Absolutely
Weird
Until these companies decide that it's more affordable to outsource these working from home employee jobs to countries like India...
The smartest thing for workers to do now is to make themselves indispensable working AT their place of employment. Training, gaining new skills, certifications and degrees

Sounds like this whole bunch have no self control. They deserve to work monitored under the eagle eye of their boss and HR
Working from home is good for nature, the environment so that is a good thing but employers should be aware that some employees need to be monitored because some might be at the beach instead to be working.
Nothing wrong with that once the work is getting done lol...I work from home as well. All I need is my ;laptop, headset and an internet connection...I would love to be in a beach house for a long weekend, do early shifts Friday & Sat and enjoy my Sun & Mond off days taking in the waves

working from home is just like anything else, it has advantages and disadvantages. i've been working from home well before the pandemic was even a thing. i don't. mind it, but i can't say that i necessarily prefer it. i do however, recognize that i am fortunate enough to have a job that can be done remotely and work for a company that allows me to do it remotely.
why did george floyd need to brought up in a discussion about work.....such a reach
I thought the same thing. He has nothing to do with me working from home
Very interesting video
My company mandated a return to the office. Half of the office quit because for that and got new fully remote jobs.
That shows who is their for a job or a career.
I definitely have to re-learn working in the office. Looking forward to a hybrid arrangement preferably WFH on Fridays to allow for travel. I did a video about my pros and cons of WFH in the past year. It's especially challenging when you start a new job/role.
Wish my company would get on board. They are making everyone come back to the office in about a month. Seriously considering quitting. I have never been more productive by working from home. Seriously. I have such a better work life balance, can get so much done and not feel boxed.
I have been working remotely with January 2021 and have had a work/life balance that I have never experience in all of my working years. I can not see myself ever taking a job that would not allow me to work from home.
Our back to the office date changed from Sept to Oct 2021. I’ll be surprised if we go back in Oct.
Working from home is better for mental health. Less toxic people
Exactly! No need to see all the cutthroats that reminds you why you hate your job. WFH makes it tolerable. 🤣😅😂😆😁
So many benefits to WFH! I hope companies don't slowly transition back!

That's what YOU think. Let me assure everyone that going back to the office will be a requirement. You cannot be a boss without someone to boss around, and the emotional cripples who are bosses are going to demand they have someone directly in front of them.
I disagree on your reasoning. I don’t think everyone will be in the office everyday. A bosses job really isn’t to boss people around - it’s to supervise. It’s also hard to collaborate with colleagues remotely. WFH is great for many things, but it has many downsides as well. What I’ve learned from my company is that the WFH model works for some people and not for others. Personally, I’d like to just keep the people who were productive at home and get rid of the rest.
Depends on the job and the boss. My manager works out of a different location anyway and even pre covid, I would go weeks at a time without seeing him. He doesn't care as long as I get my work done.
These are the sounds of a desperate class watching their power slowly drift away
The only people that do not have a choice to work from home or anywhere are the people in the services like retail, restaurants. They should be paid well for what they do
I currently work a hybrid model. I prefer working from home. There is 1 person on my team who hates it and goes into the office. To each his/her own. There are so many rules now in the office. Only two at a time in the bathroom, don't leave your work station, wear a mask when walking to the bathroom or kitchen etc.... so just let folks work from home if essentially you still have to distance and restrict movement. My movement is free at home and I work harder at home cause I know they are monitoring my productivity.

Do people not realize the long term ramifications of working from home? If you don't have to be located in a specific place to get a job, then why would a company hire a worker in the Western world, when they can hire someone to do the exact same job at a fraction of the cost overseas? All this means is that ALL corporate jobs will eventually be outsourced. Good luck with that folks!
They are already outsourcing jobs for people working in offices.
Time difference issues, languages, culture etc. Not everything can be outsourced.
Companies are literally losing employees when forced to return to the office. Even if they offer hybrid, people want full remote.
That's pretty cool. Hope this trend continues so my children don't have to deal with bullying in the workplace. Won't get hurt
Data is not just surveys. Sometimes people’s survey answers don’t map to their actions. I wish you’d asked Brian Well about that. I’d also like to know what data Google used to decide that campfire spaces and team pods would be effective. Instead it sounds more like old school top-down management practices. For example, open office plans were more about saving money on real estate footprints than giving employees a place to collaborate. What data did Google use to understand how collaboration actually works when creating their new plans?

@Anurag Chakraborty AFAIK, school buses have routes, which people GO to. They're also on a tight schedule. You miss the bus, you find your own way. You don't get to take the school bus if you live far away or in the opposite direction of everyone else.
In the modern world, adults generally get flexibility in choosing the times they start, e.g. earlier or later.
With that line of thinking, it wouldn't surprise me if you get treated like a school child.
