It sounds like heaven!!! Listen minute 4:30 to 6:06. The legato is incredible, D is maintained continuously! Its extreme difficult!!! It sounds like two violins! Perfect!!!
Agree, this section is exactly where Janine's performance is so brilliantly different from any other I've heart. I wish I could see her playing this, it's just insane.
When i met her in Athens , where she played Brhams concerto, i told her that she must play some more Bach cus her sound is so simple and and yet so great...i only had heard her adagio from 1st sonata..... Thanks for playng this great masterpiece....and thanks for uploading it
This interpretation of Bach's Chaconne is so beautiful in every way - the nuances of tone, character and technical details, within the broad sweep of its tempo, phrasing, structural cohesion and grand arhitecture...bravissima! So lucky to have this recording.
Janine is a role model of how Bach is to be played. Unlike other violinists she almost never uses vibrato in Bach, except very small and imperceptible one to make the sound more rounded. And she tries to imitate the organ on her violin as much as possible, a very praiseworthy effort. A very authentic baroque sound, congratulations. And nuances are really spectacular.
I agree that the way people are commenting on it-i.e. how did she manage 4 minutes shorter-makes it seem like speed is the primary goal. I think a better way to say this is that those 4 fewer minutes means that the variations are extremely well-linked, giving a satisfying big picture. Many stop every time there's a change in rhythm or other form of character, forgetting that the chaconne is a dance form, and such interpretations directly conflict with that. Only then is it not all about tempo.
Well, I agree up to the point. I wish you could be back Maestro Frederic Chopin !!! Sonata op. 58, Polonaise Fantaise op. 61, marvelous concertos, mazurkas, preludes, nocturnes, harmony, legato, rubato, palms and fingers of the artists are dancing like primaballerinas along the piano keyboard effortlessly, lyrically sings the songs of human voices like primadonnas assoluta...
best violin version of the Chaconne i have ever heard, including Heifetz. however, she broke my heart by avoiding vibrato at the penultimate phrase and closing cadence. she was so fearless the rest of the time, but chose elegance at the worst moment. OK, i am being selfish, perhaps . . . still the best violin Chaconne to date, period.
I disagree about the final bars - all violinists which I heard (except her) choose to end with sort of a climax, an extra trill and an organ like sound. But why? After 36 variations everything has been said. And what remains? Just to say "farewell". And Mme Jansen says exactly that, after having played everything before in one great , continuous line. And says it with a slight touch of sadness from a long gone past I love it.
@@chrisbanyan3564 I so agree! The fading end absolutely speaks of life's last breath. It is the Truth about life and death. So sad and so beautiful. A heart wrenching summation of human hopes and dreams.
What Jansen achieves withe her choice of tempo is - particularly in the middle major part, e g from 4 mins, a dreamy, feathery sound. It is helped by a rather distant miking. I like it, but also like very much Hahn's close and very intense reading.
Why? I don’t understand. The music is beautiful as is Janine. I prefer to watch her play her music. A concert with orchestra or chamber music. I love how she expresses herself you can see the music fill her heart and communicate with the other musicians. I will admit that I’m new to classical music however, I did earn a living for most of my adult life as a plain old drummer. So I can feel music and enjoy music. The same goes for Itzhak Perlman so it’s not a sexiest thing. I loved the photos running in the background. Agree to disagree?
Janine Jansen?¿ Now yes Casatorio Arthur Giorgio 30 August 2021 Flughafen Berlin Alemania -------------- Janine Jansen Gute Nacht Libe Zum Leben? Kusse
I love the understated playing of the chordal writing. This is how I have always seen it - not the extravagent exaduration of pathos one usually hears. 'Rolling' the chords I, personally, am convinced is truer to the character of the piece and to performance than breaking the chords in the usual ('over') dramatic fashion. I really like this performance better than 'most' I have heard. But of course, taste is taste and all will not ever agree (on anything)!
I fully agree. Mme Jansen is the only top violinist I know who "dares" to go against the grain and plays for example the chords in the first eight bars up and down bow, which gives the whole episode a continuous flowing line without the hard (mostly scratchy) attacks and "long" breaks between the chords. Furthermore she does not start with full power, which gives her more room for development during the course of the whole work. But as you said - taste is taste :)
Maybe its all in the recording, but for my ear, she seems to elicit the pathos here more so than Heifetz does. The other two versions I adore are Rachel Podger's and Arthur Grumiaux's. I only wish there were more Cello versions. Hard to believe that Rostropovich never recorded this.
If you would like to see the interplay of the parts in the Chaconne as it is played in real time, with individual note frequencies visualized on screen, then I can recommend the free app Foobar2000. In Foobar just go to View\Visualizations\Spectogram
Correct description IMHO - I think nothing greater, given the technical challenges and the depth of it. Some contenders for sure!! Liszt Sonata in B minor?
if these pictures tell the story..this gal is the most beautiful I have ever seen and I am fifty. not one women in Hollywood comes close. The character ie the work ethic and brilliance of the gal would only only make her a presence of intimidation to almost all men. I Pray she is not a lonely women.
She is Dutch and beloved. But she lives for music. Her world is music. Already one burnout on her name. In the real world and interviews she is nice , next door nice, other than music not very interesting. That`s ok though, perfect doesn`t exist. She is just very nice indeed.
nice makes no difference when at a dinner or cocktail party the man she speaks perceives she is way over his head. The ones that might stand toe to toe or not care are rare. Her teen and early adult photos are shocking. i can hear all the talk now. when i was in school i would pick the most beautiful girl in class on the first day and sit with her...and make a point to talk with her every day. nobody else would.
A light touch and a fine rendition. I prefer more attack though and less finesse. Of all the versions I've heard of the chaconne, Henryk Szeryng's has the greatest depth and power
My comment was referring to my observation that most players seem to be much too quick, and indeed Hilary Hahn's slow interpretation lifts this from just another violin piece to one of the greatest pieces of music in history. Faster variants hurry through all the best parts, with the effect of nullifying them.
Hahn is not the only one who does that. Leonid Kogan did it even better, just listen to his Sarabanda, for example. But Janine plays it more authentically. Hilary does excessive vibrato, inappropriate in Bach (as well as Kogan - she probably learned to play Bach listening to him), whereas Janine uses very little and very small vibrato in Bach and this is how you should play baroque music. But I agree: Hilary plays Bach with deep understanding and does it very beautiful.
Yes, Bach did also write very great organ works ( BWV 552 !) but the continous inspirational fluctuations in inventions of the chaconne are missing. Beethoven is not lifelong interesting to me.
Quite a gorgeous performance, and different from what I am used to hearing. She needs to fire whoever created the visuals for the video, this kind of idiotic hype detracts from the solemn majesty of the playing, and is completely antithetical to the spirit of Back's stupendous music. Brava! though, for the performance.
There's a book about the mathematical secrets behind the Chaconne discovered by two music professors. One is also a fairy ruclips.net/video/CSBdLujQzRY/видео.html
Well-played, but 3:04 they all (including Jansen) make this magnificent section unsignificant and put it under the carpet. IMHO only Hahn has caught how powerful and inspired these few bars are and how to phrase them.
Mrs you playing from the heart. Nobody Heifietz, Vengerov, Henryk Seryng, Sarasate, Paganini can't hold a you candle. :* kiss Aleksander Tyrała. I invite you to his concert in the synagogue on the street Isaac in Cracov.
Ok, she's very good, and expressing the piece in terms of her own ideas and feelings. However, the same can be said about Vengerov, Heifietz, Perlman, Zuckerman, etc.

+richard kim The acoustics are horrible. Was the microphone placed 50 feet away from her instrument>? Nice playing, but can't really hear all the little fine touches put into it because of the acoustics.
That's because every other version attacks this like a concerto. This version is more musically pleasing rather than seek to be technically challenging.
Actually I prefer Emil Telmanyi's version. Not because I like his interpretation or playing, but I find the broken chords just terribly noisy and there are so little opportunities for interpretation in them. Which Telmanyi can avoid by using this vega bow. It is of course stupid to say this is the best bow to use for Bach, since it's still not exactly known for what kind of bow Bach actually wrote the piece and how he really meant the chords to be played. But I find it also stupid to do these agressive broken chords over and over again, while there are so many questions about it.
I didn't realize that we were in the presence of the World Authority on the Bach Chaconne! All hail His Majesty! Of course, I'm sure you can play it much better than Janine.....this goes without saying.
Lua is just expressing his (her) biased opinion as if it was an absolute truth, but we all do that sometimes. Instead of being mad about it, hear the artists he (she) recommends. I head Bezrodny and I did like his interpretation more than this one.
Erebnur The problem is that with one stroke of the pen he/she invalidates the tremendous amount of work and feeling that goes into a performance like this. I am a violinist myself, so yes, I am angry -- how dare this person or anyone feel that they have the right to, in 8 words, dismiss the work of an artist who has reached this level of accomplishment. Has Lua accomplished something in his/her life at the level that Janine has? If so, I would like to know about it. But I suspect not, because if so there would be some sense of respect for what it takes to get to this high level.
The Chaconne - this one of the best interpretations, with subtle nuances and understanding of the style of great Bach's. . .

What beauty and good taste to execute this exalted conception of Bach's Chaconne.
I find Jansen not only puts her own beautiful touch a more musical touch, on this piece but also an exceptional beauty herself.
Janine is a role model of how Bach is to be played. Unlike other violinists she almost never uses vibrato in Bach, except very small and imperceptible one to make the sound more rounded.
