@@pengua5069 personally, 2017 was better than 2018. Musically both were awesome but to me the show design for Ouroboros was better than Babylon. However the prop design for 2018 was incredibly clever.
I just don’t like the way SCV is going with their show design/ uniform decisions and 2019 solidified that for me. Although this doesn’t discount the membership for their performance quality or anything, they all are awesome.
As a visual director I find the whole no head gear thing corps are doing now incredible messy when it comes to the unit forming sets and it pulls attention to a single performer rather than looking at the entire form since everyone has different hair and skin tones. However if a uniform change during a show adds to the entire visual design and makes sense, I’m all about it. Not just take a shako off just cause.

Different corps do solos in different ways, but usually after you receive a contract and the music is written (typically around January) people interested have a chance to audition. Some corps may have you submit videos of you playing the solo. Some corps may have everyone play them live in front of everyone. Some may have you sprint 100 yards and then play the solo to demonstrate your ability to play when out of breath. But typically it's an audition process months and months before the season. Usually more experienced people get the solos but corps don't care about seniority as much as ability. Judges don't know who's a rookie and who's an age out, only the people who can play really well.

You are ENTIRELY amazing. I love your reaction. I'm a former DCI member and I've been BLESSED with the honor and privilege to have marched with world championship corps over the years. I aged out in 2012. I'd love to give you more inside scoop on how things work in the corps world!!! You're simply amazing. OH TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION ABOUT SOLOS, there is a member of the coaching staff called the Brass Caption Head who holds audition for brass solos (the director and assistant director and most staff are also present for all auditions, because of drill AKA field placement), and there is also a staff member for the colorguard (flags, rifles, sabres, dancers) that holds auditions for choreography solos. Sometimes there are talented freshmen who get solos! It all depends on the auditions. Usually there's an Alternate Soloist, kind of like an understudy, who would get to perform the solo if the lead soloist had to miss the performance for any reason. DCI is a SPORT lol so sometimes unfortunately people get injured. It's hard work and these kids put their HEART AND SOUL and their entire being for the experience. New friendships. Amazing music. Brotherhood for a collective passion. DCI is literally EVERYTHING to these kids. Oh by the way, if someone hasn't pointed out yet, the age range for DCI is 16-21. There are certain VERY RARE exceptions to this rule. They will allow a talented 15 year old to march if they will turn 16 while on tour, and they will allow a 21 year old to turn 22 on tour. That means there is potential for very rare BONUS years for people born in summer. I aged out in 2012 (I was born in summer so I got a bonus year and I am BLESSED) but I miss it every day. The tours, the cities, the competition, the LITERAL blood and sweat and tears. I am honored to have found your channel so I can see you react to something that means my entire world. I think I might start making youtube videos reacting to DCI from a performer's perspective! I'd love to chat with you one day and let you know how everything works behind the scenes! If no one has done it yet, I'd like to give you a quick rundown of the hornline (my people lol):
The brassline consists of a choir-like structure. In a choir setting with singers, you have Sopranos, Alto's, Tenors, and Basses (in that order from highest voice parts to lowest).
-The trumpets take the soprano role. Most of the time the directors, and staff will refer to them as sopranos when addressing them during rehearsal.
-The mellophones take the alto part. A mellophone is a marching version of a French Horn (which also takes the alto role in most orchestral settings). These can be referred to as "altos," "horns, (short for French Horn)" or "mellos" for rehearsal purposes. I played french horn and march mello for a living during high school and college!
-The Baritone/Euphonium (depends on the brand of instrument really) takes the Tenor role. Sometimes a few corps will feature the use of trombones to also do this for added flair! They're bi-sectional ;) lol
-The tubas of course take the bassline. The term in drum corps is "Contra" because in an orchestra setting the lowest role goes to the contrabasses. The staff and cast members will almost always refer to them as Contras lol. Also most contras weigh about 25-35 pounds (about 11-16 kilograms for metric people lol) and are on the cast member's shoulder THE ENTIRE show while they're literally sprinting across the field and had to also use those amazing lungs to make that beautiful BEEFY bass line sing through.
Let me know if you have any questions! My email is clark_m_bell@yahoo.com
Please keep reacting. Please keep being an amazing person. MUCH LOVE!

Soloists are usually chosen by an audition. The brass caption head and staff decide who has the best sound or style on the solo. Sometimes a soloist chosen simply based on where they are on the field at the time of the solo, but that is a more rare situation. The soloist is usually chosen early, before the drill has been assigned to the members, and the soloist is then given drill that will put them in the correct place on the field.

One of Santa Clara Vanguard's traditions is to have the audience shout "Vanguard!!" at a specified moment in the show. You can hear it at 12:50 in your video. However, this does not happen every year, and there hadn't been a coordinated Vanguard yell for many years at this point (2012?). And towards the end of the season, it didn't look like there would be one for 2016 either, though there was a perfect spot in the show.
So I took matters into my own hands. I cut a video from a competition mid-season with the Vanguard yell from 2004 overlaid at the perfect time. I then shared it on RUclips and among DCI fans to get everyone onboard to do the yell at finals. And then SCV themselves shared my video! What culminated was the first Vanguard yell for many years, and what was, so far, the last one as well. Unfortunately, I was not there to do it myself, having moved to Australia, but I'm still honoured to have had one small part to play in this amazing show.

They are scarce these days, but if you can find some vids from the 80's there is some really cool things, like Garfield Cadets' 1984 West Side Story (the z-pull at the end is amazing), Velvet Knights 1988, and my personal favorite the Bridgemen of 1980.

I consider this the last show of an era. No crazy deep hidden meanings, no props, just long beautiful melodies with kick ass drill. Vanguard was one of the more traditional corps and it's fitting they fielded an "old school" show when everyone else was shedding their corps identities to chase the Bluecoats. Also, best ballad of 2016 by far.

So this show was in 2016 which was the only year I’ve been lucky enough to go to finals in Indianapolis (the final three shows of the season) and the Bluecoats won their 1st championship with Downside Up which you have already reacted to. 2nd was the Blue Devils but you haven’t reacted to their show yet. It wasn’t a personal favorite of mine but I’m a little baised. And Carolina Crown came in 3rd with Relentless which you reacted to and SCV was in 4th with this show. A very good top 4 though. And the solos are determined in tryouts and the pre-season when the shows are being made. It’s through auditions with most of the members.

Probably my favourite opener ever. The tubas and low brass had an absolutely lusciuos sound and when the rest of the brass came in, it was a WALL of sound. I also think the visual writing in the opener was brilliant as well. The circle collapsing in on itself set up the brass hit with perfection. Also, I don't know who's been writing Santa Clara's brass books of late, but my God he has absolutely WEAPONIZED the mellophone (mid voice) section!

Soloists: These are usually selected by audition, though other factors, such as experience and work ethic, may also factor into the decision.
For example, I auditioned for a solo with my corps in 1994. While I could “play” it, I had just switched to baritone a few months prior and had never played a solo before, so I was not chosen. It was the right call.

Courtney, I hope you also have the time and opportunity or opportunities to discover the music behind the shows that you watch. Without the music, there is no inspiration behind the concept and eventual fruition of the show theme. I'm glad you appreciate and enjoy the shows you do watch and comment on. Maybe someone will recommend a REALLY OLD show from DCI's inception and beyond. I know kids today may not appreciate those shows, but I think it's super important to know where the roots are. Ok, getting off my soapbox now. Thank you Courtney for what you do.

Johnny Cash’s (old famous country singer) poem/song “Ragged Old Flag.” It’s a really inspiring poem about the history of the flag. It was played as a video for the 2017 super bowl. It’s something else!! Something America needs to here again!!
Edit: you can find the video everywhere on RUclips
