- Season's Greetings everyone and a Merry Cactus Christmas! I have put together a little present for all of you: a wonderfully colorful selection of some of the most beautiful blooms from my cactus plant collection from the past year 2024! I hope that you will enjoy this selection of awesome plants and flowers (...a bumper selection of over sixty in total, from a very broad selection of genera, with all the names added, for your easier ID), paired with some relaxing music in the background.
I have sorted the featured blooms by their main flowering months/periods:

Hi Allan! Glad you enjoyed all the cacti, especially my little Lophophora collection. Indeed I am a little proud of this collection as I have been growing most of these plants for way over 20 years, all raised from seeds and grown slowly under quite 'hard' conditions, i.e. minimal fertilizing, watering and good sunny location. Joe best wishes for 2025. What a nice collection of blooms. Some nice old reliable bloomers like that p horstii of yours. That monkey tail at the start/end is enormous! Interesting in the panned out shots not a lot of plants flowering together -a colder summer? I took your advice in using inorganic mix with much better results! Thank you Joe for all of the cacti blooms. I grow prickly pear cacti here in Illinois along a south facing slope along my foundation. And they bloom in early June.

WOW, that really was a cinematic experience! 🤩
First thing, apart from the plants theirselves: There probably could be no better fitting t-shirt for such a video, absolutely loving it 😄😉 I also got a pullover with a "gardener motive" for Christmas (it has a "heart beat line" printed on it with some symbols printed over it like a watering can and a flower for example, hopefully my description manages to describe it in an imaginable way, haha😅)
Regarding the plants and their flowers, it really seems impossible to pick just one favourite out of them, so in fact I have many favourites 😂
What all the blooms definitely have in common is that they will never fail to amaze me with the interplay between the thorny plants bodies and the most beautiful flowers (in so many different sizes, forms and colours!) emerging from them.
And the fact that you managed to record so many gorgeous flowers in your collection during this past growing season really shows that you are an expert in this hobby, regarding both knowledge and "care skills" 👍🏻
If I have to decide, the generas featured in this video I liked most probably would be Stenocactus (formerly Echinofossulocactus), Thelocactus and Gymnocalycium. And your seed-grown collection of beautiful Lophophoras definitely also amazed me.
One question: The plant standing right on the left outside of the greenhouse (for example at 2:56), am I right that this is a Sago Palm Fern (Cycas revoluta)? And if not, what is it then? 😊
As you maybe have stumbled upon it: I decided to change my profile pic of the pink-flowering Sulcorebutia crispata to a more fitting photo, to be precise a picture of the beautiful white-rose coloured bracts of my Euphorbia pulcherrima 🌸

As far as I know, these ferns belong to a group of plants of so-called living fossils, together with e.g. Gingko biloba (definitely a very interesting tree species as it is basically neither a conifer nor a normal deciduous tree, I think it is considered to be something in between these two tree forms), Wollemia nobilis (thought to be extinguished and discovered to be still alive in 1994 in Australia) or the Metasequoia glyptostroboides (one of the few deciduous conifers like the larch). As you can tell, I am not only interested in cacti and succulents (even though them being of course some of my favourite plants) but also in many other botanical topics 😉

Stunning indeed! So relaxing for a winter day here in Canada. Trying very hard not to water any cacti during this winter dormancy. Do you water your eurphobias?
Hi Annette! Thanks, so happy that you enjoyed the blooms! Indeed, if you are able to keep your cacti in cool/dry dormancy over these winter months, they will then in spring/summer really reward you with stronger growth & health, and also hopefully many more blooms too! I try not to water most of my succulent Euphorbias too, the only exceptions being those with lots of larger leaves. But i keep them a bit warmer than my cacti, at ca. 13C/58F. as a cactus lover, i have a question, how to water the all these cactus without root rot?
i bought more than 25 cactus. only 17 left... i use cactus soil mix and pumice , red lava.
water them 6~8 time a months (during spring, summer) and 4-5 times a month during in fall, winter
Thank you very much, I'm very happy that you enjoy my cactus collection and also the greenhouse. It sounds like you have a wonderful collection of cacti too. Thank you also for your excellent question. From your description it sounds like you need to reduce watering your cacti quite a lot. Only 1-2 times a month in the growing season and max 1 times monthly in the winter dormancy period is enough. That will reduce your problems with root rot. Do you have lemon ball cacti? Is it normal for their skin to be a little less tough but still very healthy looking?
Hello, yes I do have several plants of the Lemon Ball Cactus ( Parodia leninghausii) too. The outer skin can become a little softer and wrinkled in the winter months if you are allowing it a dormancy period, i.e. hardly any waterimg at all and slightly cooler location. Hopefully the softening is not due to rotting. It would slowly be turning dark in that case. Hopefully however it is doing fine! Greetings and happy growing 🙌☺️👍🙏🌵🪴🌵☀️😎🙋♂️
