Thank you so much Clyde, really happy that you enjoyed the two videos! Wow, your start to the hobby sounds really painful, cannot begin to imagine what a nightmare that must have been for you as a 3 year old! And really amazing that you hot your first cacti at the age of 5, you started 7 years younger than I did, my friend! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your stories of earliest cactus exposures! Sending you very best cactus greetings to Morris Park in the Ozarks, USA🇺🇸👍☺️🙏🙌🌵🪴🌵🌿🌸🌼🌺💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Awesome collaboration with Lyn! Your story is very interesting. And wow, you have a picture of your cacti from way back in the 70’s! I’m impressed at how long you have been doing the hobby. That’s why you have so much knowledge about succulents. 😊 Your passion is genuine.
@CactusCaffeine thank you so much Ana, really warmly appreciate your awesome feedback - and really happy that you found the story interesting! Yeah, these are the only pictures I could still find, I know I had lot's more, but they have gone lost unfortunately! I am sure that your story is equally interesting, would love to hear it too! Best regards and have a great day! 🙌🙏☺️👍🌵🪴🌵🌺🌸🌼💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Awesome video, Joe 😊 Was great to hear yours and Lyn's beginnings with growing cacti and succulents. I was probably around 12 when I first got introduced to these plants, too. Just wish I had more than one plant from back then. Thank you for sharing with us my friend. Have a lovely evening and weekend from Edith & myself and happy growing as always 👍🏻🌵☀️🌸🌺🌼🏜
Thank you so much, Daz, wow that is so cool, that you started with your introduction to cacti at age 12 too, just like Lyn and myself! Clearly something of a trend here among former 12 year olds, haha! Yeah, I only have very few plants left from that time too, or at least their propagated clones, e.g. a Echinopsis, a Haworthia variegata, E. grusonii and an Epiphyllum ackermannii. Glad you enjoyed the videos and personal cactus stories from Lyn and myself, thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend! Sending you and Edith very best cactus greetings and wishing you both a wonderful week ahead! 🙌☺️👍🙏🙏🌵🌿🌵🪴🌺🌼🌸🙏💚☀️😎🙋♂️

A nicely told story, Joe! I love the notion that good things often happen on rainy days. How was your interest in geology able to develop at the same time? I suppose it rained quite a lot back then! Now I'll go see how much it rained in Ireland!

Good morning Joe!🙋🏻♀️ Very interesting video!😍 I was 3 years old when you started your hobby… I grew up surrounded by cacti in my grandmother's backyard in Mexico, since then I have loved cactus flowers and their aroma. I remember that my grandfather would go every day to the hill where there were lots of pitayas and he would bring us delicious😋pitayas with fascinating colors every day when it was the season. Thank yo so much for the beautiful video, because you made me remember my childhood😊💚💚💚💚🌵🪴

Hi Joe☺️🙌You had a real fascination for cacti from such an early age. The planter with your cacti back in the 1970s was awesome🥰Much more beautiful than I grew. Yes, I remember the days of no internet😅👍That's amazing how you had the ability to consume a lot of information from those 3 books back then. Your dad was very generous wasn't he. I could , some day, be that guy🤔😃I really enjoyed listening Joe☺️🤲🌟
Hi Newman! Awesome to read your wonderful feedback, thank you my friend! Glad you enjoyed the video and the old photos of my first collection and planter ☺️👍🙏🙌 Yes indeed, my dad was very generous and patient with me, haha! Such a lovely backstory to how you got started with cacti Joe! I have to say that you were already very accomplished as a young man, with the impressive curation of your collection arrangement, in that large landscaped garden trough in the family garden. Also, just to say that I really appreciate how you always label & include the Latin binomials when featuring a particular cactus. That precision really helps with identification ~ particularly in the complex world of plant naming.
Aww, thank you Joanna, for your very kind words and wonderful feedback! Well, I must say, I myself had completely forgotten - until I found those old photos from the 70's again - about my very first, still pretty shaky attempts to grow my cacti in troughs, alongside pots, haha! I reckon that also may have come as an influence from having seen these plants growing in a botanical garden back then ...so: no matter how miniature the own version was going to be, it had to be some form of a mini-landscape, lol!! Thanks again for watching, Joanna, and also fantastic to read your feedback about finding the names I often try to add in the videos useful! That's brilliant feedback, thank you! Have a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend ahead! Happy growing!
You've got a great story there Joe, thanks so much for sharing it with us all. I love the story about your initial purchases without telling anyone, it's great that you were then able to enjoy growing plants with your dad even if they were very different plants! I didn't really get into cacti until 2022 (aged 51!) but I do have roots that go back a lot further. I remember my mum used to grow these weird plants which I would now identify as Astrophytum Myriostigma and Lithops, among others. We also had 2 large cacti (Echinocactus Grusonii and probably an Oreocereus) which I think as a young child I was supposed to be afraid of, but found fascinating. Have a great weekend, and look forward to seeing more of your beautifully presented collection 🙂🌵💚
Aww, thank you so much Donald, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comments and feedback, really appreciated! Really glad that you enjoyed my little cactus story there, and truly fantastic and fascinating to read about some of your story there too - especially also wonderful to read how your memory of some of the cacti from your mum had perhaps also helped trigger your own passion now for these awesome plants, haha! I always say "once hooked, always hooked, especially with cacti!" haha! Isn't it amazing to be able to go back in one's memories and identify cacti (with one's knowledge of today) that were being grown by folks that influenced us along the way! In those days they were perhaps "just" a weird plant, today they are e.g. an Astrophytum myriostigma (...beautiful, but still weird, somehow, lol!!). Wishing you a fantastic Friday and awesome weekend ahead my friend, happy growing!
Thank you so much Mark, really appreciated! So glad you found the information useful and enjoyed the video! Best wishes for a Happy New Year! 🙋♂️🎊✨️🎉🙌☺️🌵🌿🪴🌵🌼🌺💚😎👍🙋♂️

Thank you for sharing your cacti story. ❣️ My love for cacti started at age 6 or 7. I had a very small bedroom with a window facing south. We had a house with no heating in the bedrooms. In summer my room was hot and in the winter cold. So that made me get cacti. I used to go to the library to get info about them, too. I don't have a greenhouse ( I wish), but all my apartment windows are full of cacti and a few other plants.
Thank YOU for watching and for your absolutely AWESOME feedback and comments, and your amazing story of how you already got hooked on cacti at the age of 6 or 7, that is truly AMAZING haha!! It sounds like your house indeed had the ideal climate for cacti, but that must have been pretty tough and difficult for yourself! Your setup now, with lot's of cacti sounds fantastic! Great to read that you were a big cactus book reader yourself too, haha! Many thanks for sharing your own personal cactus story, so interesting to read!! Happy growing!! 🙏🙏👍☺️🙌🌵🪴🌿🌵🌺🌼🌸💚☀️😎🙋♂️

Oh wow a resume full of dedication, guess being a geologist adds to the fascination🌵 You reminded me-my grandpa used to own I guess very mature specimen of columnar cacti and impressively enjoyed the fruits when ripe 🍀
Aww, thank you Christina, for your very kind words and feedback! Haha, you can call it dedicated, or also obsessed, but indeed a life-long passion for plants and rocks, haha! Your grandpa sounds like a wonderful man, kind regards! Thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comments and feedback! 🙌👍☺️🙏🌵🪴🌵💚😎☀️🙋♂️

Many thanks Lori, so happy that you enjoyed my personal cactus story and thank you for watching plus for your awesome feedback! Haha, thanks Tom, indeed, looking back it was really funny how my dad and I pulled through that project, as unlikely as it sounded, combining cacti with orchids in one greenhouse, lol! As always Tom, many thanks for watching and for your wonderful feedback, much appreciated! 🙌☺️🙏👍🌵🪴🌵🌺🌼🌸💚☀️😎🙋♂️

Thank you Joe for the great information over the year you and Lynn are the ones responsible for a greenhouse full of cactus setting in South Carolina and don’t forget catimanie have a great weekend
Hahaha, oh no, Gary, I suddenly feel quite guilty, being responsible (...luckily not on my own, but only together with Lyn and Daz!) for a greenhouse full of cacti on your end, haha!😁😅😂 So happy that you are enjoying all the videos and information! Thanks for watching and for your awesome feedback! Cactus greetings to South Carolina! Happy growing!! 🙌🙏🙏☺️👍🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌺🌸🌼💚☀️😎🙋♂️
My first cacti was an Echinopsis with white flower that I got from our neighbour more than 30 years ago. After that I bartered a lot in school, my relatives and friends gave me as present, I had a successful planting from mixed seeds too. 10 years ago my collection counted about 100 cacti and succulents when I decided to give them to someone because I thought I won't have time to take care of them. So I gave them to one of my former colleague. All of her family came to our house and they brought my cacti absolutely for free. Some months later the man wanted to beat me, because he thought I'm in love with his common-law wife (who were my colleague). He became crazy, I got threatening phone calls and messages from him, so it was a good lesson for me, not to give expensive things for free. After some years I started to buy cactuses again from the local botanical garden and on cactus fairs, because I missed them so much. So now I have lot of them again. I think they have a strange spirit, that attracts me to keep them.
Wow, thank you for watching and for sharing this amazing story about your first cactus collection. Yes indeed, people can react in the most surprising and irrational ways! Anyway, it's a very good thing that you started collecting cacti once again and now have a nice collection of your own again! Clearly you are destined for owning a cactus collection, which is fantastic! Happy growing!!☺️🙌🙏👍🪴🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Loved seeing those pics of your early collection! How amazing that there must still be some of those plants you first saw at the botanical garden still there today 🌵
Thank you so much for watching and commenting and so happy that you enjoyed the video and old pictures of my very oldest plants! Yes, you are absolutely right, given the age that many cacti can reach, it is quite likely there are still plants in that botanical garden that have seen me before, haha! 🙌👍😉🙏☺️🌵🪴🌵💚😎☀️🙋♂️
That's a wonderful story of how you started collecting cacti! Really interesting! I have just watched Lyn's video! Thanks for sharing! have a great evening!

Thanks for this very interesting video! I really enjoyed that you also included some photos of your collection back in the days. Regarding getting information on the plants we like to grow, I must say that even though one can gather so much information in such a short amount of time on the internet nowadays, I still enjoy "collecting" and reading books about the specific topics I am interested in. Being interested in nature-related topics for a long time already, I think the moment I really got hooked up growing these plants (and also a variety of other house and garden plants) was when I visited the Bundesgartenschau in Erfurt in 2021 and as a part of that the Danakil Wüstenhaus in the Egapark. Following this visit, I went to Kakteen Haage (who is luckily also located in Erfurt) on the evening of the same day and got a bunch of great plants (Opuntia ficus-indica, Carnegia gigantea, Echinocactus grusonii, Astrophytum myriostigma, Gymnocalycium calochlorum, Senecio rowleyanus). What also should not be left unmentioned is the fact that your channel (which I discovered in Summer 2022, I think the first video I watched was covering the nomenclature and taxonomy of cacti) really intensified my interest in these plants further, so really a warm thank you for uploading so many informative and interesting videos and actively engaging with the community for now already 2,5 years. Wishing you a great weekend with wonderful "golden october weather"! :)
Hi Jacob, thank you for all your updates and thank you for once again watching and for your wonderful feedback! Yes, I agree with you, it still is quite special to have a real book rather than an online article. And regarding your visit to Erfurt in 2021, the Danakil Haus is indeed very inspirational and I can see how it triggered your interest, including a first cactus shopping at Haage, haha! I am also very happy to read that you have been positively influenced by my videos and that you find them informative and useful, thank you so much for this compliment! And thank YOU for your ongoing interest, engagement and support! Wishing you a wonderful week! 🙏🙏🙏🙌👍☺️🌵🪴🌵🪴🌺🌸🌼💚☀️😎🙋♂️

Aww, thanks so much for watching both our videos and for your awesome feedback! Isn't it indeed so funny that we both started with four plants, and also both at the same age of 12, haha! Of my first "fab 4" I am still growing the offsets of my old Echinopsis eyriesii and Notocactus ottonis...the two others unfortunately died somewhere along the way, many years back... There are two other plants from these early "pioneer days" of mine that are still thriving...two Echinocactus grusonii, now over 50 years of age, still no flowers haha, and I featured them in a video of mine some time back...if you are interested, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/Ztr_qSuMYjM/видео.html Thanks again and have a brilliant weekend ahead! Happy growing!
@@cactusjoe That's amazing that you still have some of them. I can't believe the golden barrels still haven't flowered for you yet after 50 years, that's wild!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the story, thanks very much for watching and commenting. My oldest cacti are two Echinocactus grusonii, both over 50 years old. I have a video on them on my channel, if you are interested. I haven't had any negative feedback on the audio quality so far, so let me look into that - thanks for the feedback, appreciated. 🙌👍☺️🙏🌵🪴🌵💚😎☀️🙋♂️

Sending you very best cactus greetings to Japan, take care and happy growing!🙏🙏🙏🙌☺️👍🌵🪴🌵💚🌺🌼🌸☀️😎🙋♂️
Amazing story Joe! I really loved listening to it! And great collaboration with Lyn! ❤🌵
Thank you so much, Vera, so happy that you enjoyed my personal cactus story! And fantastic that you also enjoyed Lyn's and liked our collaboration idea and topic! Thank you for all your wonderful support and kindness! 🙏🙏👍🙌☺️🪴🌵🪴🌿🌵💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Out-Fox-Trot-Standing - Loved the collaboration ! Very informative from both perspectives.
Haha, awesome that you enjoyed the collaboration too, thank you so much! It was brilliant and lot's of fun to work with Lyn on this project! And wonderful also to read that you found it interesting and informative to hear about both our 'cactus stories'. Have a wonderful day, best wishes and happy growing of course! 🙌☺️👍🪴🪴🌵🌵🌿🌿🌺🌼🌸💚☀️😎🙋♂️
You and Lyn had a great idea here, Joe. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Thank you so much Bill, means a lot to me, to get this wonderful feedback from you, my friend! Thank you on behalf of Lyn and myself, and thank you for always watching our videos, and sharing the same passion too! 🙌🙏😉👍☺️🪴🌵🌿🌵🪴💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Not in any way shape or form, boring. OH thank you Joe for all your advice and knowledge. 😍🌵
Thank you so much Mark, really appreciated! So glad you found the information useful and enjoyed the video! Best wishes for a Happy New Year! 🙋♂️🎊✨️🎉🙌☺️🌵🌿🪴🌵🌼🌺💚😎👍🙋♂️

I love your collection and vast knowledge of cactus!
Thank you so much indeed, I'm very humbled, and you know these things just automatically happen when you are immersed with a topic for a rather long time, so no real effort of my own, haha, but very kind of you to say that! Very happy that you enjoy seeing my collection of cacti! Best wishes, thank you for watching and commenting, and enjoy your Sunday!🙏🙏👍☺️🌵🪴🌵🌿💚😎☀️🙋♂️
Thank you Joe for your memories

Thank you for sharing your cacti story. ❣️
My love for cacti started at age 6 or 7.
What a lovely colab, Joe.. really enjoying the stories! 🌵💚
Thank you so much, really happy that you have watched both our personal stories! And that you have enjoyed the videos and our collaboration theme. Thank you and warm regards to you in Italy! And wishing you 'happy growing' of course!🙌👍☺️🌵🪴🌵🪴🌸🌼🌺🙏💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Oh wow a resume full of dedication, guess being a geologist adds to the fascination🌵
You reminded me-my grandpa used to own I guess very mature specimen of columnar cacti and impressively enjoyed the fruits when ripe 🍀
❤ Awesome cacti life story. I loved hearing how cactus became your life passion. Thank you so much for sharing. Really made me feel happy to hear another Cactus Person's life journey. I will have to listen to Lynn 's story.
Many thanks Lori, so happy that you enjoyed my personal cactus story and thank you for watching plus for your awesome feedback! Yes, I always love hearing these stories from other cactus enthusiasts too, as no two stories are the same! But we all share the same passion, that is the beautiful thing in all this, I find. Wishing you a wonderful Sunday and week ahead! 🙏👍😉🙌🌵🌵🪴🪴💚😎☀️🙋♂️
What a wonderful story to listen to mate, thank you ! 🌵🌵👍👍💚💚
Thank you so much Nick, I'm very happy that you enjoyed my personal cactus story, really appreciated! Thanks for watching and for your wonderful feedback! Enjoy your Sunday afternoon and the week ahead!, greetings to Denmark! 🙋♂️🙏🙌☺️🌵🌿🌵🪴🌵💚☀️😎🙋♂️
What an interesting idea for this show, think my favorite part were you and your father shared that green house.🍃
Staging of your cactus is fire!!!🎉
Haha, awesome!! Love that you like the staging in my little cactus greenhouse! It's n aspect that is very important to me, as I like my plant collection also to be a place of tranquility, wellbeing and inspiration for viewers, visitors and myself 😉🙌👍☺️🌵🪴🌵🌿🌵💚☀️😎🙋♂️

Thank you very much, for watching both our videos and so glad you found my personal cactus story interesting! Awesome feedback, many thanks and much appreciated! Enjoy the rest of your week, happy growing!! 🙌👍🙏🙏🙏😉🪴🌵🪴💚🌼🌸🌺☀️😎🙋♂️

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and for your awesome feedback, appreciated! 🙌☺️👍🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺💚😎☀️🙋♂️

Thank you very much, Kim, really happy that you enjoyed the video and my personal cactus story. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated 🙏🙏👍🙌☺️🪴🌵🪴🌿💚☀️😎🙋♂️
Feels so nostalgic just hearing your story. It's so funny that you and Lynn both started with 4, what happened to your firsts?
Aww, thanks so much for watching both our videos and for your awesome feedback! Isn't it indeed so funny that we both started with four plants, and also both at the same age of 12, haha! Of my first "fab 4" I am still growing the offsets of my old Echinopsis eyriesii and Notocactus ottonis...the two others unfortunately died somewhere along the way, many years back... There are two other plants from these early "pioneer days" of mine that are still thriving...two Echinocactus grusonii, now over 50 years of age, still no flowers haha, and I featured them in a video of mine some time back...if you are interested, here's the link:
ruclips.net/video/Ztr_qSuMYjM/видео.html
Thanks again and have a brilliant weekend ahead! Happy growing!
@@cactusjoe That's amazing that you still have some of them. I can't believe the golden barrels still haven't flowered for you yet after 50 years, that's wild!
Great story Joe! What's the oldest cactus you have? Also, you might consider investing into a microphone. Audio quality is not great.
How did you learn to speak such perfect English ?
Thank you for watching, Eric, and also thank you for the compliment, although,... relatively fluent perhaps, but far from perfect! Haha, must have been many a rainy day, a good american radio station and lot's of english-speaking friends and colleagues that over the years I can all thank and "blame", lol! Thanks for asking and sending you lot's of cactus greetings, happy growing! ☺️🙌🙏👍🌵🪴🌵🌺🌸🌼☀️😎🙋♂️
