Russian Tu-142 Intercepted in Alaskan ADIZ

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - North American Aerospace Defense Command F-22s, CF-18s, supported by KC-135 Stratotanker and E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft, intercepted two Russian Tu-142 maritime reconnaissance aircraft entering the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone on Monday, March 9th.
The Russian aircraft entered the ADIZ north of Alaska and remained within it for approximately 4 hours. NORAD fighter aircraft escorted the TU-142s for the duration of their time in the ADIZ. The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace over the Beaufort Sea, and came as close as 50 nautical miles to the Alaskan coast. The Russian aircraft did not enter United States or Canadian sovereign airspace.
NORAD employs a layered defense network of radars, satellites, and fighter aircraft to identify aircraft and determine the appropriate response. The identification and monitoring of aircraft entering a US or Canadian ADIZ demonstrates how NORAD executes its aerospace warning and aerospace control missions for the United States and Canada.
“NORAD continues to operate in the Arctic across multiple domains,” said General Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, NORAD Commander. “As we continue to conduct exercises and operations in the north, we are driven by a single unyielding priority: defending the homelands.”
NORAD is a bi-national command focused on the defense of both the United States and Canada; the response to potential aerospace threats does not distinguish between the two nations and draws on forces from both countries.

@@Анатолий-о3я4ф B-52 постоянно модернизировался и досихпор выглядит актуально, в отличии от Ту-142, который выглядит как старое ведро из 60-х, в строю осталось всего два десятка самолетов. Тем временем 1 евро стоит 81 руб.

Normal intercept altitude for maritime reconnaissance aircraft. We fly over them with our P-3 and P-8 aircraft and they fly over us with theirs, nothing new. Been buzzed by all sorts of Soviet aircraft.

I think this is the same one that flew over and buzzed a temporary navy submarine support base in the area.
My navy fighter sqd. intercepted Bears all the time in the mid-60s; & I'm sure our bombers were probing Russia's defenses to see about their reaction times, etc. I don't consider this new--Cold War never really went away.

That's totally normal procedure. Russia tries to spy and the US stops them from doing it. The mutual benefit is training for their pilots and other crew. If someone starts to slack you get spied on. Could be worse.
