I agree with pretty much the entirety of this video, and I'm by no means trying to be disrespectful at all, but how far can a mod stray from its source material to be considered bad? The Hypno's Lullaby mod does something similar to the Ben Drowned mod, changing the character to look different from its source material. From what I've seen, no Hypno creepypastas portray it as a bulky behemoth with a detachable head. (I want to know, in case I ever make my own mod someday)
Good question! There's not a hard point that defines where a mod went "too far"... the thing with the Ben Drowned mod is that it presented itself as a Ben Drowned mod, even going so far as to call itself "Vs. Ben Drowned" in it's Gamebanana description... yet it didnt actually include any elements from the original story. Hypno's Lullaby, and sonic.exe, too, adapt the story FIRST- both hit on the key points from the original source material that they needed to, and then with that all well and done, they got to mess around with alternate character depictions and fanon content. The thing is, if you take the original name, it's incredibly disrespectful to NOT do the bare minimum and adapt the source's elements, thats why funkin drowned is a disrespectful and manipulative mod. The others arent because they do that bare minimum, so they earn that freedom- bottom line is, if you use the original name, then make it a mod about your source material. if its NOT a mod about the source material- and its got fan interpretations, alt designs, goo monsters, whatever- then DON'T USE THE ORIGINAL TITLE. Funkin Drowned isnt a Ben Drowned mod, its a mod of some kids OC that he decided to name after the original story- of course giving it the "Vs. Ben Drowned" name was going to come off as super manipulative... because it is. Name your mod accordingly, if its an au, name it after the au. if its a new design, name the design with something creative and then put that in the title, like "Vs. Dark Goo Ben (Ben Drowned AU)".
The Hypno is drawn like alot of Fanart with human characteristics, and they added lore to the head flying off (Hypno had poured all his psychic power into his head) This is supposed to take sometime after the original creepypastas and Hypno I'm 90% sure isn't the original but a Hypno that lost its trainer and turned evil. I think mods that take a little liberties is okay. And the lore actually has time put into it, Banbuds is even going to add a Buried Alive later on.
The thing I love the most about Majin/Mazin's song Endless, is the fact that it's very upbeat and cheery. Which is pretty much the original meaning behind the Sonic CD Easter egg. It wasn't originally made to be creepy or disturbing, it was just made by the background artist to make you laugh at the silly hedgehog with a human face. Great video. Hope to see you reach 1K!
The hell? The first thing I said when I saw Tricky was "WTF is that thing around his neck?" Now stupid zoomers think Tricky away has a sign, that dude hasn't had that ever since the train crash. The whole thing is a missed opportunity with DJ Tricky, he had music equipment.
It's interesting because the team that made the Ben Drowned mod would later make the Funkdela Mod, which is a mod based on the Mandela Catalogue. And unlike Drowned, Mandela is incredibly faithful to the original source material. So much so that it is one of my favorite mods.
Its because they werent like planning a real big thing for Ben Drowned. Most fans of the story I see nowadays only know the base level story from way back when, or some odd adaptation if they're unlucky. They probably didn't think to do a refresher on Ben Drowned lore for some mod they made without real high expectations
@@lure-ph2xg yeah this guy sounds like he gets mad over Minecraft mods that let you make windmills cause you couldn't do that in the original Minecraft. Actual reddit mod level stuff
I saw the thumbnail and thought that he was gonna roast the high effort mods. I was actually interested to see how the mods that I enjoyed would be criticized. But I'm pleasantly happy that these mods were used as examples of how to properly make an FNF mod, and not one of ridicule. Thanks man!
@@superkirby2158 wasn't gonna but I thought about it and now I gotta know What do you have on Mario's Madness / Funkin at Freddy's (Vs Afton) / Indie cross?
I'm surprised you didn't mention the "SMB: Funk Mix" mod, or even "Mario's Madness", because these mods are as great as the mods for "Sonic.exe" or "Hypno's Lullaby" in my opinion
they weren't out at the time! or at least, they came out during the editing process, i don't remember. it took a LONG time to finish this video, i mean at the end i address the .exe drama as if it JUST happened... because it DID, at the time of recording!!! bad work ethic be like
Well Sonic.exe is FAR more recognizable within popular internet culture than any of the Mario creepypastas. The only piece of creepy Mario fiction that's made the rounds on the internet in the past couple years is the Wario Apparition. When I played Mario's Madness I had no idea who ANY of these characters were aside from both the Luigis (more Beta Luigi than IHY Luigi), compared to Sonic.exe where I knew Majin, Tails Doll, Sunky, and Sanic immediately. Mario's Madness is good, great actually. The source material it's based off of just is not as deeply rooted in internet culture as Sonic.exe was.
There's an FNF mod that pays tribute to a 2014 fnaf fan game called "Friday Night at Treasure Island", and they literally replicated the entire fan game into a mod, it was impressive and really good
Another great example that would get into the Nostalgic category would be the Indie Cross. It's not just based on one indie game, but multiple! It's a love letter made by a whole bunch of people who gave it their all in making it! When I got to the boss song of Cuphead's week, that's when I fell in love with this mod. Also, think Hypno's 2nd song was brutal? The nightmare songs really put that to shame! It's not just a single superboss, it's 3, with each one harder than the last! In the final superboss, you have to survive 5 minutes full of complex patterns while having mines that can blind you and ones that can insta-kill, and you have to fight enemies and dodge them while you are playing this song! Yeah, it's crazy.
As a mod creator for a unique consept the hardest thing as a crreator is to deal with those quick cash/ click grab mods that get made super quickly just to ride the train, and because of that, mods that were in months of development who get released roughly before or even after get completely shadowed for the hard work they put in. Now, I really can't say i experanced this to the level it could've been as my mod, Big brother mod, was lucky enough to launch originally in a FNF dry spell so the hard work we put in, was able to spread enough for people to know about it. I noticed when i launched week 2, there was less traction, with huggywuggy mods i belive launching roughly around that time. ( don't quote me I don't really remember what was popping off when i did week two launch) but i could tell right off the bat, that week two did not make it's way through the fandom enough to even realize a second week had came out. Quick click grab mods destory or even limit the abbility for other mods with potention to be easily over shadowed and ignored. it's really hard to watch it happen to SO many mods. I don't really get to say i understand the level of frusteration as I was "lucky" to get that little wave of popularity, however watching the sidelines and seeing this stuff, really does break my heart when well done mods get overshadowed. there are some things in the video that I do disagree on, however i do really respect the fact that is your own opinion. and that is about nostalgia mods. Most of the mods i've seen are more of either a retelling, or a rewritten idea to make it flow eaiser with the conspet of FNF. thats kinda how i've always seen it, and genually don't mind alternative version of the same story. But hey, thats just how i see things! and same gose with you, I hope you have a great day and thank you for reading.
That FNaF mod you showed early in the video actually got way better recently and I really like it. They changed Freddy’s voice to something far better and has weeks for Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy with some extra songs that all are pretty good.
@@SweetLivLuv For real, and each one keeps getting better than the previous. Vs FNaF 2 was one of my favorite mods and once Vs 3 dropped that one immediately overtook it.
The saddest part of the Freddy mod you showed was that it really could have been great: -Looked great for the game it was touching on -A Freddy week where they sing the LivingTombstone songs would have been fantastic -The style is unique, it was one of the first times I saw them combine FNF’s 2D with 3D… dunno if that’s very common today. The thing that REALLY ruins it is that Freddy’s vocals are garbage, which is a really bad thing to have in a game like this
The huge update to that mod came out btw, it’s called Vs FNaF 1, and it is absolutely amazing. Fully SFM animated cutscenes and a LOT of references. I love it.
Have you seen the update? They revamped the Freddy week and it’s now *really* good with even original songs! Not only that but they released in the same update the rest of the mod (so things like Foxy or Chica weeks have been completed)
8:35 Funny how both the VS. Weegee Mod and the VS. Freddy Mod have gone through a couple massive updates and are now actual really good mods now, their also called YTP Invasion and VS. FNaF 1 now.
Hello! I just watched this whole video, and it really resonated with me since it applies to me and my work so heavily. I'm the creator of the Weegee mod seen in this video, and I just wanted to point out that what you stated in this video is entirely true. I didn't care about the source material. It was a messy, unpolished, and honestly ear-grating mod that I highly regret making. That's why for the past year and a half I've been trying to improve upon my mistakes by making the Weegee mod a lot better, which resulted in the YTP Invasion mod, which properly pays homage to the source material and is overall far more charming and fun to play. Basically what I'm trying to say is, I've heard the same criticism you stated in this video time and time again from people like Banbuds, which made me take action and fix my mod, which was incredibly beneficial in the long run. I'm sure if other mod creators take this type of criticism to heart, it'll make their mods even better. Thank you for letting modders know how to properly pay homage to the source material.
omg wow hi i never thought the vid would reach anyone that i talked about in it- honestly, the fact that it's blown up so much in the span of ONE DAY is freaking me out what's crazy to me is i never actually considered your mod super nostalgia bait-y, maybe it was because weegee has so little source material to go off of, maybe not! like, you're the LAST person i'd expect to really **resonate** with the essay's message because i genuinely didn't know that any of the criticism applied to your mod. if i'm being completely 1000% honest, i never beat the first week because i just didn't want to deal with horribly spammy charting (product of the era, not really your fault- we can blame ballistic for those months of terrible charts). i actually didn't know the mod expanded into a ytp celebration mod until i looked up footage for the video, and even then i never really looked into it further because of that initial bad experience with the mod... and that was truly doing you and your work a disservice, and i'm really sorry about that. its truly incredible to hear that this kind of criticism turned into a better final product with ytp invasion! i'm sure if i had given it a shot i would've put it in the video (in the positive section, i'm sure). Basically what I'm saying is, i'm sorry for reducing your project to just an example of "bad charting and music", and i want to thank you so much for the heartfelt, genuine comment despite how much i just... trashed your work. with how honestly you want to do better, you didn't deserve all that shade, and again, i'm sorry for throwing it.
Oi! Can I make suggestions for it? Use more than the old YTP stuff, there's generations worth of different YTP styles, think Emplemon, Awful Fawful, Jimmy Davis, YTPMVs, so many things to do outside of the old stuff! You did great regardless, man. I'm so glad you learned to improved upon what you did to make something better. And I'm so exicted to see I. M. Meen and Black Hiver, they're my favorite YTP characters!
May I say, I love the YTP invasion mod. I grew up with the Golden Age of YTP, and it really gave me a passionate, heartfelt nostalgia trip through my childhood, and hearing the audio of The Sky Had a Weegee during the beginning of Weegee's first song was a nice touch. May I reccomend that when you ever update the mod, you add more weeks that pay homage to later generations of YTP? Otherwise, you did a great job making the YTP invasion mod.
funny story don't regret what you made if you do, you can never grow in certain aspects. and i hope youn know, you made me and a few others who watched enjoy the mod you created. in my opinion top 3's
8:52 quick fyi, the mod was very bad to the point that the orginal creator of the fnaf 1 listen to everyone that was complaining about it. So they went back and fixed what was heavily wrong with it. Now it's a actual pretty decent mod.
Pibby mods in my opinion, desaturated the interesting concepts of what the Pibby trailer presented and I find it much less interesting now, but I am still hyped for the show if there will ever be one.
for me what makes the fnf mods died even faster is the redo of some of the mod makes the said mod gets even worse while to me what killed off the mood is how underwhelming the Sonic.exe encore cancelled build feels
I will admit that at first I was one of those people who did something poorly for bait and easy popularity. If you've seen Ronald McDonald, I was behind that unpassionate, cheap mess. I couldn't do much as solo artist, yet despite that, so many adored the simple project and still admire it to this day despite how much it lacks in comparison to what's been coming out recently. I just couldn't bear to continue on it if that quality back then was all that was expected of this meme character whose modding history of being OP has the potential to be on par with UI Shaggy. What changed then was the sudden rush of support and understanding after I announced it was scrapped. The fact people still had patience gave me hope to start it from scratch and gain the confidence to recruit help since no one was planning to take the mantle. Now I've made a team to help express this potential in terms of fair difficulty, creative liberties on this very open slate, and plan extra content knowing the sheer amount of variants of Ronald out there and what makes each one so special to represent. And so far with this, people are excited and hopeful. I probably wont ever reach the same amount of popularity with the new Ronald, but I'm sure we'll still make this memorable for the community to love and rage with
Yes! Make stuff you actually give a fuck about guys. I don't have the skills or resources to make a mod, but I do really want to make one for characters I like and stories I enjoy. I in no way intend on making something that is popular or super nostalgic but super fun.
I know this is severely off topic, but the VS Mouse mod went from one of the most god awful mods I've ever seen, with terrible sprites, horrendous music and an director and such But not only is version 3 looking up to be SO much better in every way possible, but the team pushed through SO much drama and the mod is still growing strong Props to VS Mouse
I made a mod for fnf that didn't go anywhere, but I was fine with that. I was just happy I was able to make something and that I managed to do something for a game I wanted to give more attention to. The musician even made the songs feel something out of the source material and that to this day still makes me feel good (they were the same person that did Safey Lullaby too). I do feel like I could have done something more since the mod was rather basic, but I did the best with what I felt like I could accomplish. I love fnf, I hope it continues to be a huge passion project for everyone to indulge in. Edit: It's called War of the Human Funkers.
This is honestly such a great video. Now for my response: You may have heard of ENA, right? The abstract traveler who has a popular series on RUclips AND Newgrounds? I expected someone to make a very good FNF mod out of her and unfortunately no one has yet. Sad thing is that there was an upcoming ENA mod made by a group of people (Like Clowfoe, the one who helped for Vs. Imposter) and it got cancelled for now. The only popular ENA mod is a BF reskin, but that isn't enough to satisfy me or ENA fans as a whole (Even though it made a cameo in The Date Week).
Just make it yourself. I'll list some free tools to help out. -Psych Engine (obviously) -Soundtrap -OpenToonz -OpenUtau -XML spritesheet Generator for FNF I'll list more when I think of them. These should help you get of the ground tho.
The problem i have with FNF mods is that so many creators on the internet just do it because said source material is trendy and they end up making the worst song you ever heard of, while other mods like Indie Cross are so well made and the music is so good that it's clear the creators put a lot of work and heart into it. And the Sonic.EXE mod is really great despite the original story being one of the most hated creepypastas of all time so much that it was moved to trollpasta and the creator of the story was so pissed about it. But the thing with FNF mods is that whenever people see something trending on the internet, they quickly made a fnf mod to gain some internet fame.
I am in love with this video. The amount of effort you put into this really shows. By that I mean the research and just giving that one on one heartfelt advice and critique. With the community it really is a swaying ship that is ready to be tipped over at any second. But it does shine a light on what can be improved, what needs to be addressed, and what is being seen. Keep up the good work and keep making a change. 🖤
Okay so, I've worked on a... relatively popular FNF mod (Vs. Isaac) and I can say that respecting the source material was a main priority during it's development, the rest of the team and I never did it for fame or money, we were genuinely just passionate about the idea of bringing something we liked to this new format. That being said, I absolutely understand your point, a lot of people in this community just crank out trendy mods with little to no effort with the only intent of getting the big channels to play it for content, which, y'know, makes sense, there are always gonna be people like that in every fandom. But then, there are modders that just genuinely put a lot of effort into something that you can tell they don't actually care about, like the Ben Drowned example, which I just find baffling, because... well, why not spend that effort on something YOU would like to see represented in FNF? Something you're passionate about and know you have the skills to make a mod that does it justice? My only advise for any future modders would be, if you really want to make an impact, make what you WANT to make, not what you think would get you the most views. At the end of the day, we're doing this for fun, and it stops being fun if it feels like a chore. Very entertaining watch!
OH MY GOD I JUST REMEMBERED THE FUCKING GAME. HOLY SHIT IT WAS SO GOOD Ok I think I'm getting ahead of myself there but god damn, to anyone who's reading this please for the love of god check the mod out.
Thank you for not ending on a bad note! So many off these case studies only leave you depressed and angry at a community, you critsised the bad ones then drew attention to what makes this community GOOD! Keep up the good work😁
Now this was a video essay! You put a lot of thought, heart and effort into this Ben, and it shows. You made every point so succinct and well articulated. Helluva Job. You know I’m already in agreement with you on almost everything, and this video is no different. Wether you decide to go back to FNF or not, this video will show that you truly care about the game, even if you don’t play it. I just hope the community will see that.
If I’m being honest, the Ben Drowned mod was…alright in my opinion. That’s why there’s another Ben Drowned mod called “The Mic of Time” and I think *that* mod deserves more love than the original Drowned mod. Vs Sonic.EXE is the best mod to have ever come out hands down. Especially with the 3.0 update happening soon (it was just going to he 2.5 cause of the entire controversies and crimes that happened but then they decided to do a 3.0 update) Hypno’s Lullaby and Vs Imposter are really fucking good as well. Same with the Henry Stickmin mod and the recent Mario’s Madness mod and Secret Histories mod.
I considered making a FNF mod of my own involving my own character before, but I scrapped it because I'm not really passionate about FNF or fame anymore. I'm moving the modding skill I have to something I'm much more passionate about: The Binding of Isaac. The mod is starting off decently, and most of what's left is adding costumes and unique synergies. I don't expect it to get too much traction since he's not going to be too unique of a character... until his tainted form. Feel free to ask me about more.
Funkin Drowned is getting an update. Supposedly, you can choose between the Goop monster design, (which btw, I actual really liked that redesign. Due note the Funkin Drowned came out on Halloween and had been worked on for a month before that. The design you see isnt based on Pibby but an actual OG design that was (allegedly) the creators redesign of the statue to make it creepier.) And you can switch to a actual design that will be based on the actual Statue. It's also getting its song, Terrible Fate, reworked with better vocals and a more lo-fi trap mix. If you do want a mod that is more close to the OG source material though, try Mic of Time. Its gonna apparently be the Sonic.exe Mod for any and all Legend of Zelda with the next week being worked on for Skull Kid.
Hey there! I'm the music creator on Vs. FNAF 1, or what you instead decided to look at in the video, Vs. Freddy. I just wanted to rephrase how I can agree with some of your points, but I am on the other end kinda offended when it comes to you calling us on the team "uncaring" or "nostalgia baiting". This video came out at quite an unfortunate time, it seems, and I completely understand that our update wasn't out by then. But I'll gently encourage you to check out the massive update that launched recently. I may just be speaking into the clouds here, but we certainly heard these same points you made. I want to elaborate that the creator, PouriaSFM's is a long time FNAF fan himself and a very talented SFM creator. And myself, who personally redid all the music for the mod, grew up listening to DAGames, JTMusic, and TheLivingTombstone's FNAF songs, as well as inserting myself into every crevasse the franchise spawned. What was once a crappy, clickbait mod about referencing The Living Tombstone songs while a poorly rendered Freddy Fazbear sings at boyfriend has turning into a project of absolute passion pointed head on at the FNAF SFM community. We poured countless hours of work into it, added 20+ songs, and have every single FNAF 1 character represented with their own weeks. It rather hurts to have that work called out as clickbait, even if it's the old version. I can also attest to the Ben Drowned mod in the community, as I know one of the team members personally. They are currently working on an update that will capture the true sense of Ben Drowned and it's real themes, backed by research, lore, and well-natured fans on the team. I'm sorry if that came off as ranty. I am just slightly offended and I want to see your channel improve, as I believe in different circumstances, this video would have emboldened me, and my creative beliefs in FNF. Also, I encourage you to check out Indie Cross as well, it's an absolute passion project in every sense of the word. You'll be stunned. With that, I thank you for all of the words in this video, as you certainly had some amazing points (Pibby is absolute trash and finally someone recognizes Impostor as a well made mod!). I hope you'll opinion will change when you see what we've made.
You guys did an amazing job, it's clear PouriaSFM and all of you are passionate with the mod and i seriously adored the update! One tiny pet peeve i have is that it uses the TeamVr models for the sprites which i personally think are a bad choice, but i understand if it was personal preference or if you guys couldn't find better ones! Keep up the lovely work!
This is super off-topic from the video but you have such a cool character holy crap Love the design. Video was extremely informative as well, good stuff!
Another good example of an FnF mod made with soul and passion is DDLCTakover. As a big fan of the source material I had the biggest smile on my face playing through the mod. Character writing was on point, visuals were cute and charming, and the music was fitting for each character. Mod so good that a decently sized DDLC content creator played it and fell in love with the mod.
@@butyouknow1426 the hell are you talking about? Have you EVER played DDLC in your life? The dialogue perfectly captures the DDLC feel and it's the best DDLC mod that could ever exist. Which "Vs Monika" do you even mean, one of the 4384847 week 6 reskins?
@@butyouknow1426 look. There was a warning that you'll have to read A LOT since it's based on a visual novel. What did you expect? Have you played or at least watched a playthrough? I bet you don't know who these characters were and you knew Just Monika.
@@butyouknow1426 have you EVER played DDLC? What is "unfitting"? What is "cringe"?! And this mod is not over yet! There's gonna be an final update! So, try to play DDLC, GENIUS.
@@butyouknow1426 So you think Vs. Monika, which became the DDTO prologue week, is better than the rest of DDTO? As someone who doesn't like DDLC that much, I disagree with your opinion. Monika that basically everyone doesn't know the existence of, who knows? Heck, you might actually be trolling and I got fooled into replying.
For funkin drowned, I prefer to see this as "A personal take" on the creepy pasta. Of course it's not the exact same as the creepy pasta, but I see this as a fresh take on the character. Of course, that's only my opinion.
That’s the thing, a personal take is fine… but how far until it’s not a rendition of that character and is just a new thing of its own? I don’t get Ben drowned from the mods design, I see a weird attempt at mashing dark link and normal link together
For me its that For FUNKIN' drowned, it feels like a take combining both the surface of the whole story, and like, major fan art, combining it into the design, and a much more simple story, rather than adding the cult and everything Since, let's be real, most people only know the surface story of Ben drowned anyway
@@pringlesman222 true , I was in the creepypasta world for a long time I had never heard of this cult story or that it was an ARG, anyway it makes me want to know more now :')
that’s exactly what it is, you’re right. i’ve been out of the creepypasta fandom for almost a decade now (jesus fucking christ) but even when i was super active in it, people were expanding on and personalizing these characters constantly. i feel like the level of reinterpretation in that particular fandom is a lot higher than most, largely because there’s often very limited source material to work with. for this instance, if you’re interested in ben drowned as a horror story exclusively, that’s one thing - there’s a good amount of lore there to explore, as well as a (debatably active) ARG. but if you’re interested in ben as a character?? not all that much to work with. that’s done on purpose because he’s a monster - you shouldn’t really know the monster’s favorite color in the confines of your story. but there is a long and healthy tradition of people trying to guess monsters’ favorite colors in basically every fandom, and with creepypasta it’s oops all monsters. so really i think the clash in opinions here just stems from the mod dev and the reviewer coming from very different sides of the same fandom. definitely don’t think it should have resulted in the reviewer calling it “nostalgia bait”. it’s not like creepypasta was ever that big a fandom in the first place. how many people could it possibly draw in lmao
This video really opened my eyes on what it takes to make a mod with “passion and soul” as you call it. I’ve always had ideas in my head of making a mod based on my favorite video games. (One in particular being Dr. Robotnics mean bean machine because I especially loved the music from that game) but back then, it was very similar to the basic 3 song week with very little unique things to make it special, sort of like the rushed “click baity” style But after watching this video and seeing the examples of what makes a mod great and what makes a mod baity, it’s really given me a new perception on what it truly takes to pay respect to a certain source material when making a mod based on it and it gave me the chance to rethink how exactly I would want a mod based on a video game to be like I probably won’t ever make a mod because I have no experience with coding lol. But if I ever decide to one day make one, I’ll definitely be sure to remember this video, as well as do research on the source material and take feedback/criticism when necessary
The missingno song could probably have been talked about a bit more, considering the unlock method being moving up and down the menu options (as one does on cinnabar island to fight missingno) and also the added bonus of the notes moving to seemingly random locations which made me super happy as a modchart player (it wasn't much of a modchart but it was something) before detected from hex or taste for blood from tgt
Here’s how I see it all: A good FNF mod is a mod with good art, good music (unless the mod is actively trying not to be serious, which is fine) and mechanics that are easy enough to manage (unless the mod isn’t supposed to be easy, in which case you do you but don’t make it too impossible). But perhaps the biggest detail of all is that you need to be faithful to your source material. If you have spoken to me regarding FNF mods before (which, trust me, you haven’t) then you’d know that my favourite out of them all is Vs. Sonic.exe. You know, because of how faithful it is. Honestly it seems like the more you learn about the mod the more you see just how much love for Sonic was put in here. Not love for the more modern aspects of the franchise, love for classic Sonic. And especially love for the franchise’s more nightmarish aspects. Honestly, you never know just how many Sonic creepypastas are out there until you play Vs. Sonic.exe. I mean, look at the 3.0 leaks! I don’t even recognise one of the characters in the upcoming secret songs, but I can tell it’s being faithful as fuck to the source material even if I don’t know what the fuck the source material even is! Naturally, if I ever made a FNF mod, I’d try to make it as faithful as I could, but if I felt the need to I’d do kinda the same thing Funkin’ Lullaby did and slam something of my creation in there. Nothing too big, just an extra little detail or two to really make it feel original whilst still remaining as faithful as possible. Because at the end of the day, this is what Friday Night Funkin is. *A celebration.* The original game was made to celebrate Newgrounds, and the mods like Lullaby, Vs. Imposter and Vs. Sonic.exe we’re made to celebrate their source material too. Vs. Ben Drowned and some of the other less faithful mods out there, they’re ones that just _didn’t get it._ As for the mods like Vs. Whitty and some of the others out there that are completely original, that’s completely fine to not have a source material. Like I said, you do you. But at the end of the day, *FNF isn’t FNF if it’s not a faithful celebration of it’s source material.* After all, a good song never ends. EDIT: Ok, looking back on this comment I think I should really try and rephrase what I’m trying to say. No, FNF mods do _not_ necessarily have to be faithful in order to be good. Like, I personally thought Vs. Ben Drowned was a pretty good mod, even if it wasn’t all that faithful. It’s just that the best ones (Hypno’s Lullaby, Vs. Sonic.exe, Indie Cross, etc) are the ones that are. Don’t be afraid to throw something original in if you want to, but make sure you’ve got a good explanation for why it happens. You don’t want your rap battle-style celebration of your favourite franchise to be full of plot holes. (why the fuck did I just say that)
I think you do have some valid points however I strongly disagree that most of this stuff is a bad thing. There's a difference between someone making their own interpretation, someone clearly just trying to gain traction by using a familiar face, and someone outright disrespecting the original material. With the ben drowned mod for example, yes it is different and it does stray very far from the source material, however clearly it still respects the original Creepypasta while manipulating it into a form that that better fits the FNF experience. There's another Ben Drowned mod that more closely mimics the original pasta, however despite having some cool moments it fails to leave as much of an impression as the clashing tones and more subtle horror elements don't work as well with FNF as a medium. There are a lot of very shit mods out there I won't deny that, however I feel that theres a difference between a mod straying away from the source material and a mod outright disrespecting it.
interesting that you say mic of time doesn't leave as much of an impression, as most if not *every* person i've talked to that has some sort of nostalgic attachment to the original story loves it simply because it... well, tries to be a ben drowned mod. sometimes that's all you need, you know? but hey, horror's subjective- some people think a polygonal statue teleporting to the player's position is dumb and decide to dump black paint all over an already set-in-stone design; some people see why it worked all those years ago, and decide to actually adapt those elements to a modern, more frantic medium that doesn't really allow for a slow build of dread while trying to not compromise the integrity of the project. it comes down to whether someone cares about the story and what it accomplished, at least that's what i think- at the end of the day, mic of time is the hypno's lullaby equivalent for ben drowned, and that's worth praising no matter who you are. is funkin' drowned a good mod? absolutely, that's what i said in the video- but its not a ben drowned mod. its an alternate take that strays so far from the style of horror the story executed and butchers any plot elements from the original to the point that it really is unrecognizable, and from my talks with the team, they know that, and agree that it should be separate from the original story. Time will tell if they actually distance it, but as of now, the reason that they get hate for their design choices is because they presented an au mod as if it was a mod of the actual story, which it undeniably wasnt.
@@CybenX_yt Funny how you call Funkin drowned an 'alternate' take since it looks more like an alternate from the mandela catalogue than the statue from Ben drowned
I agree this isn’t Ben Drowned the story it’s the other side of the creepypasta fandom I don’t want to call it the tumblr side cause people think of it as negative but tumblr side. The fanfics, the Aus etc side That Ben is known for black goo dripping eyes and even hands in some fanfics. So unfortunately the story you grew up with is not the inspiration for mod ... in a way. Also the drowning thing was so nitpicky it was clearly artistic choice. Edit: SO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT SONIC.exe HAS FANDOM CANNON BUT NOT CREEPYPASTA, YOURE PRAISING IT FOR THE SAME THING YOU DISSED THE BEN ONE FOR 😭😭😭😭 I’m actually like dying it’s funny af
@@CybenX_yt several of the other modz you talked about in thiz same video alzo did adaptationz of the dezignz of scary-izh characterz, but you PRAIZED them while bazhing the ben drowned mod. it made what you said feel like a joke, and it juzt made you feel bitter for really no good reazon. let people have fun, let people stray away from the source material. itz not hurting you.
This is a nice in-depth video about how FNF modding community should be like, and how to pay homage to the source material. I will admit that trying to make an original idea or just trying to make a mod is pretty hard from the charting, music, art, vocals, and the mechanics just to make the mod stand out is kind of rough. Anyways this was a good way to critique the fandom on how the mod's quality should be and the advice if you want to make a good FNF mod. So, thank you for making this in-depth video about this.
as someone who worked on mods for awhile in this more soulless views are everything mindset, i do fully agree on this stuff. For me specific i worked on a lot of big mods and thought i was hot shit because of it, my ego got to large, and it inevitably lead to a harsh reality check to it all that left me with pretty much nothing after the fact. I first started fnf modding on projects i had genuine passion in, some things based on media i liked, and some oc mods i thought had potential. And well for me, i grew to be hypocritical of the respect to pure copout stuff. i got mad when other mods that were based on things i liked didnt respect source material (Friday night Foundation comes to mind particularly, as it felt very low attention and research to someone who active is a SCP-wiki writer. especially when they refused to acknowledge SCP's CC license). then i didnt respect the mods i worked on. same goes for base FNF. i never liked FNF despite being a modder for a long time, never cared for the base game and was indifferent to whatever was going on with it and its creators. i didnt even really know who made original fnf for awhile. but when it comes to that lack of respect, rush for views and copout mods, and all of that. i can account first hand, that its because of how many teenager aged people have suddenly gained a medium to massive attention through their skills. simply put a lot of modders arent adults. and that comes with a lot of modders being very impressionable. Nobody makes a fnf mod because they want to make fan content to base fnf. They make an FNF mod sense well, community game makes any mod an easy road to their 15 minutes of fame. And that fame brings out the worst of people. I dont only know that from myself, i know that from my own experiences with hooda, ash, amor, and aether. i worked with all of them at one point or another. Its been a very long time sense my hayday of having my music in Funkin forward, making the hype song of the mod every big modder is working on. I lost that when that fame brought out the worst in me. and i personally consider my time spent in FNF modding to still be one of the worst places ive ever been. A lot of super talented people have finally been able to grow from it, but for a majority, its been a painful lesson while growing up that fame is more of a curse then a gift. Modernly im making my own mod alone. not to get views or attention from, but just as an expression of emotion and art at this point. afterall the thing im working on is just a symbolism based psyche thing with no ties to any existing media, whereas im just personifying my own complex emotions and baggage into a artistically communicated way.
Hypno's lullaby has so much detail to the original game and their creepypasta. Like the pokecentre in the background when battling hypno. Missingno being by the sea. But Lost silvers is possibly the best due to its typing mechanic, The creepiness. My favourite part being the fact he is facing forward due to so much fan content of him facing forwards.
I honestly get what your staying. Once something popular happens and there's a mod about it the next day, I tend to avoid them since they are most likely to be terrible mods that get traction for five minutes and then are completely forgotten
Cyben, I am so happy to inform you that there is an fnf mod that respects Ben Drowned, it’s called Funkin’: Mic of Time. Considering the name, I believe in updates it will have content featuring horror across all the Zelda games just like with EXE and Lullaby. Check it out, I KNOW you will enjoy 😊
@@xnaphothex-naut9996 honestly the music is a big one for me and I never was really interested in that one even though I've played it compared to Ben drowned atleast in my opinion
this is really well constructed, you put effort into your videos that is not seen from most big creators! good job on the video, and you make a solid point.
Thank you!!! one of my biggest worries was that the point would get lost in the long script, but from what people are saying, i guess i pulled it off????
@@CybenX_yt Sometimes some complaints stretch for just a bit too long, but otherwise it doesnt feel like it was just a 2 minute video stretched out to 30.
I agree that you do make some valid points, and even as an outsider who doesn't even play FNF, I have seen a bunch of mods that were clearly only created with the intention of gaining attention. However, I disagree with a lot of the things you said, specifically with the Funkin' Drowned mod. Yes, it is different from the source material, but I don't see it as it being disrespectful at all. I see it as the creator liking Ben Drowned and just wanting to create a fairly simple mod to pay homage to it while still keeping it unique. If anything, I think having an unmoving elegy in an FNF mod would be... kinda boring, actually. 😂 There is absolutely nothing wrong with straying from the source material at times to create something unique and creative; that's why fanart, fanfiction, and even mods exist within fandoms to begin with.
I totally agree with you. When he started talking about the Drowned Mod it felt off. It's like he only expects mods to never try and take a creative route with the characters based off other sources.
On the subject of your point about "is it bad to expect mods to break new boundaries all the time" is that...well...I only half agree. I do agree that pushing boundaries is a good thing that deserves to be rewarded, but nothing is wrong with enjoying and respecting and appreciating mods that do what we already established and like as a whole. So, I do think its bad in the sense that not everyone can or wants to break every microscopic boundary possible, so they shouldnt be punished for still doing great work just because they didnt find the like...one or two other potential advancements that can even be done to shake the formula. I do think its good, however, that we appreciate and reward the few who manage to break that limit and set a new standard. Initially, that limit and standard was just the three song structure with no cutscenes or dialogue. Then Whitty came around sometime after the dating sim week and broke norms. Then other mods with special features and gimmicks came around, small-scale stuff that shook the formula, along with fully animated cutscenes, so on and so forth. I think its unfair and sort of elitist to want every other mod to break the boundaries, because not only are we gonna run out of boundaries to break eventually, but it acts as though pre-existing formulas are somehow inherently inferior without any actual thought or logic behind it, just because its not breaking a limit every two weeks or whatever. The Valerie Mod, my personal pet favorite mod, is a mod that came from the "simple cutscenes and transformation era", the time when simplistic dialogue and animation, as well as the infamous transformation trope, came around. By the logic you present, if it came out in recent months, its not a bad thing to brush it off because it "didnt innovate enough", and I think that in and of itself can be damaging, since mods should be judged by their content and individual quality, not by an arbitrary measure of "newness". EDIT: It seems you agree on some level, as you praised the relatively simple Among Us mod in your video, so eh, fair enough. Now of course, its not a bad thing if a mod slips under the radar, its more like an unfortunate but neutral thing, but if it gets brushed off just because it isnt some hyper mega ultra super duper spicy innovative thing that rewrites the very foundation of FNF itself? That's when you gotta look in the mirror and ask if it's really the mod you dislike, or if its your unrealistic standards. I dont mean to seem so harsh, and your video is ultimately well reasoned, but this one particular point was a stand-out moment of half (and cautious) agreement for me. I hope I wasnt disrespectful.
If I could recommend a mod that has a lot of love, respect, and is just fun. Indie cross, amazing animation, bobby music, great charting and nods to all sorts of artists and memes. If you haven't heard of it I highly recommend it, it's fantastic.
That's really helpful to know, it gave me a lot of things I wasn't aware of in modding (since I'm a modder myself). Thanks for pointing these things out! Love your videos!
8:45 I just wanna say that this mod recently got remastered as a whole ass tribute to the first fnaf game with weeks for every single animatronic and a new voice for Freddy as well as original songs, it is imo the best fnaf fnf mod right next to funkin at Freddy’s.(it’s called vs fnaf 1 if anyone’s interested in playing it
This is a pretty well put together video, but there are some flaws in your review, like for example, some of these mods like the weegee and fnaf mod, looked like they were rushed because the creators didn't exactly have the best skill set at the time, so that factor made the mod become a horrible assortment of art and music, but the creator didn't cared, they just wanted to make a mod deciated to something they loved. Also, the weegee mod and the fnaf mod got massive remasters, now that really shows how much the creators were dedicated to the subject, if they didn't care about the subject and just wanted attention then they wouldn't remaster their old projects, so what I'm saying is that the creators didn't make the weegee and the fnaf mod for clicks, they did it for honoring that subject, even though the first result was bad, they went ahead and fixed it up to make it high quality and to clearly show that they love that subject
the weegee mod is super interesting because the creator told me in this very comments section that it was originally made for clicks, and criticism like this was what led to the ytp invasion mod.
The only thing I disagree with in this video are the parts where some Mods are considered “bad” and are “disrespectful” I feel like Mods like 8:56 and 10:57 are actually great and do have effort put into them but the reason why they look like *that* is because not everyone is talented and they want to pay respect to the things that they’re fans of but just aren’t that skilled as others in the community are. In fact, I remember when that FNAF Mod was uploaded on Gegcoin’s channel and no one complained about it at all really, and it instead got positive feedback by many. I also liked it too since it actually used a 3D Model in the Animations. Idk about u but that sounds like the Creator knew that he couldn’t draw Freddy Fazbear good so instead just used a 3D Model. Tbh the only “Bad thing” about the Mod might just be the Background, and even then that’s Pretty Good since it simulates Darkness on both BF and Freddy. As for the Funkin’ Drowned Mod, I have mixed feelings about it. Sure I can *kinda* see your point about it disrespecting the source Material, but I think that’s kind of a Stretch, kinda. There’s a number of possibilities for why it looks the way it does. Maybe the Creator thought the original just wasn’t creepy enough, or maybe the creator just didn’t want to come off as disrespectful by copying the statue without any changes (ironically), or maybe they didn’t know how to draw the actual Statue, or maybe, the most logical answer, they just wanted to do their own thing. Not only are the Mods you labeled “For Clicks” subjective, Horror is also Subjective, so who knows, *maybe* someone actually finds this version of Ben Drowned scarier then the OG. Heck, the Creator probably just used this Mod as practice for his Art Design and wanted to hear people’s thoughts on it. Either way, I know it may not *look* the best (to some, since this is subjective, not objective) but just labeling any Mod that looks “Bad” on first glance to your standards as “only made for Clicks” really sounds petty, to me at least. One Last thing, at 13:50 you point out some people’s comments about how Mods don’t get proper recognition unless the ideas and\or concepts presented in the Mod is actually original, or just never done before, or uses an uncommon idea (and potentially makes it work) and how it isn’t a bad thing since that’s how Game Design works, being rewarded for having New Ideas. I sorta don’t agree with this either. The only reason why FNF (the actual Base Game) got popular was because of it’s Music. Sure the Visuals and Flashy Colors along with the expressive sprites and Animations for each pose got the game popular as well and is definitely why it stood out, (Mostly the Character Designs) it was *always* the Music. Everything and Anything else was just a Bonus for the Game’s Popularity, but the *only* reason (or I guess maybe, the Main reaction) people stayed is because of the how Great the Music Sounded. Each Week produced hit after hit after hit and for the Most Part, each song was Great. Every week had at least 1 Song that people really really liked. This was brought to life by the Visuals, Character Designs, and overall expression each Character had put to them. It’s what made them so Distinct too. Friday Night Funkin’ would have never received as much Popularity as it did/does now if not for the Game having the Animations and Characters it actually does have. Because I bet you that if Kawaii Sprite just uploaded the Tracks to each week on RUclips with no game, just the Music being posted on YT, it would have only became *slightly* popular amongst people, but not at all as popular as it is now. The reason I’m saying this is because this is Perfect Proof that FNF Mods don’t even need Original Ideas and Brand New concepts to make their Mod popular, or even actually *good* . As long as their Song(s) are actually good and Fun(nny) to watch\listen to then *that’s* what makes the mod good. If a Mod had great Character Design and Expressive Animations with a very likable character (oc or not), but did NOT have great music at all, and the music objectively sucked and was horrible, then you could argue that technically, this Mod is horrible. (ONLY TECHNICALLY, since This Mod is actually great because of the Character(s) I. It and how well-drawn they are, that’s what carries the mod to greatness, if you have way more positives and only 1 negative, theoretically it is a good Mod. These are the only Nitpicks I had with this video, other than that, I actually enjoyed watching you talk about this game with a Passion, and it actually seems that you really like this game, as did I when it was popular. Overall, great video, Any other FNF videos you do, I’d love to watch it :)
Bro, the freedy mod its sh1t, the "effort" of the mod its just put freedy sining a living tombstone song. And for the ben drowned mod... well the mod its good, but the mod shouldnt be of ben drowned in first place, hes not talking if the staute of ben its scarier tha the original, he's talking about how the mod shouldn't even be a ben drowned mod in the first place, anyways, even if the staute of ben in FNF is scary that dont care bc the mod dont wanna be scary in first place. And why you say that FNF got popular for the music? I mean, yes its a rythm gane but i dont think that its the only reason And again, hes not complaining for the music of the mod, hes talking about the source material
I agree with this, honestly Like, there are absolutely mods that are released just for clicks, that Squid Game one being a great example, but to say that something is effortless when it has well-made art and music just because it doesn't directly match the source material is very much a reduction. Like, they go on so much about how it doesn't look like the statue, but the thing is, it being the statue wouldn't look good- you can't get expressive animation from an inanimate object with no articulating parts, and that would hinder gameplay. And the amount of vitriol over the fact Ben wasn't being directly drowned? We're clearly seeing the spirit of Ben, not the actual act, and trying to animate around multiple arms actively drowning someone when trying to express character emotion and game feel would be immensely clunky.
Actually, the FNAF 1 mod had gotten a huge update that improved heavily. The vocals were fixed and the music is now REALLY GOOD. Its alot better now and the creators started to take feedback to imrpove upon their originaly build, something not many people do.
20:32 Damn man, the reason why sonic.exe is so special to me even though the story was generic as hell is this face right here. 8 y/o me was absolutely traumatized by that one face. Even to this day that's still one of the most unnerving static images I have ever seen and you just shoved it into my face like that lmao
i admire seeing someone criticize all the half-assed trend-hopping mods out there. nearly all of your points are properly thought out and conveyed smoothly. although, with all due respect towards your amount of passion here, i have some problems with your criticisms against funkin' drowned. that said, i at least want to try making a case in defense of the mod. *(this is gonna be a long one; tl;dr will be at the end)* for starters, i get that ben's design among other things in the mod aren't accurate to the creepypasta, but to use that and other minor stuff to make such a big assumption that the team didn't care about making the mod is a big leap. there just doesn't seem to be enough on the table to prove that it was due to a lack of care specifically. creepypastas aren't immune from having creative liberties taken here and there. to add horror in places they didn't exist before, bandbud's team made hypno an ominous and towering monster who lurks in the shadows. hypno's lullaby as a mod wouldn't have as much of an atmospheric impact if it stuck with the semi-relevant rom-hack's look (which had a normal-sized hypno in broad daylight) you could always take creative liberties to mix things up in a fun way too, which is why i'm pretty sure the funkin' drowned team wanted to take a unique spin on ben's look (which would also do better in explaining the twitter response you brought up). of course it's possible to take too many creative liberties with something but then that brings up the discussion of exactly how much you have to change something before it's not the same anymore. it's fine to be upset about how botched the mod is as an adaptation, but you *have* to back up your claim with way more than just ben's looks if you want to make such big claims about the team or their intentions. as it stands, it just feels like you're trying to build a story-high sand castle with one small shovel. and that's not even taking into account how you've used the "they don't care" mantra for both your thumbnail _and_ your title, which just sends your already extreme claim overboard. funkin' drowned isn't like most of the crudely-made video game mods that only slap vocals on top of said game's OST. terrible fate was a song made with love, and it shows that whoever composed it had fun in doing so. (but the same can be said for the charters and programmers as well) even with that in mind, i'm pretty sure funkin' drowned's also unique due to having a complete scene-change (feat. completely different character sprites) midway through a song. all i'm saying is, that sorta detail doesn't seem like something a careless team would code in if they wanted to crank it out for nostalgia and clout. i can't underestimate how important your evaluations of a mod's intentions are in a medium so commonly exploited for fame, but it feels like your love for ben drowned is preventing you from making a clear judgement of the mod as a whole. *the tl;dr section* *> pointing out inaccuracies in the mod is fine; using said inaccuracies to claim that the team didn't care about the mod as a whole is going a bit overboard.* *> "not caring" isn't the only possible reason as to why things look the way they do here. given the lack of evidence, the team may or may not be just as passionate about ben drowned as you are. who's to say it wasn't done as a unique twist to a classic formula?* *> you have perfectly fine criticisms against mods that're only made for clout or fame; you just don't have enough substantial evidence beyond surface-level elements to prove that funkin' drowned is one of them.*
yeah i agreed with almost all of these point expect for that, it just rubbed me the wrong way and i could not help but feel like its a bit too overreaching or overreacting? i could be not understanding but what you say is exactly what i have in mind about it
honestly one of my personal favourite fnf mods that people that actually cares about both games they combine its probably mods like vs.ourple guy which has a bit of everything, the original characters are a bit rewritten (which originally it wasnt the case, but i feel it makes a bit more of sense since some of the extras songs based more on the "ocs or not og fnaf stuff" are linked more then the actual stuff, i will be going back to this later) also becuase apparently the lore of the mod it takes in another universe where fnaf its just a "funny arcade machine series of games" a bit like fnaf hw tell you "all the rumours are fake created by a rouge indie game dev that made fnaf 1-6 as a joke" and that hw was a "silly game that takes fun of these rumours to say nothing of this is real" when of course... it is (im not gonna spoil you this ;] play the mod its fun as hell) the 1st week its more on the joke of purple guy as a concept, you know, a random guy killing some kiddos but this version its just memed becuase its hilerious, i mean most of the fnaf games are a joke, from the storytelling to some designs (im speaking as an old fnaf fan xD) the first song its just him being goofy, the second song has wayy more references to fnaf 1 like the golden freddy and phone guy appearing in the middle of the song, then the 3rd song takes place basically in the fnaf 3 minigames where our ourple guy destroys the animatronics one by one and then springtraps himself like a dumbass xD the old second song, now as the 1st of the extras its about the orange guy from fnaf 6 going to jr's and being depressed until he puts a WHITE FEDORA AND BECOMES THE PERSONAFICATION OF MICHEL JACKSON, why? becuase midnight motorist music is pure PEAK (i listen to that soundtrack for hours xD) there is a cool henry song (i prefer the v.2 song but the v.3 has a cool cutscenes) where it takes place where henry literally is in the fnaf 6 fire and then baby kills him as referenced in the books "the silver eyes trilogy" if i keep going there are a fuckton of references i can list, however im gonna count 4 more these are nothing to do with the og fnaf but with the content they have touched for example this mod it the mod that brought us "bite" and "lore" which are the songs featuring basically the first episode of markplayer fighting all the animatronics (and in v3 they added that all the yt hud actually works! you can skip part of the song by pressing the skip button, skip parts of the characters by closing the doors on them early, boop freddy nose, and if you press the pause button you pause the game xD) and basically the matpat going so insane that tries to sing ourple guy and then scott cawthon butting in the song himself to stop them from actually spilling the story (this is my take anyway, thats not what happends in detail, but its funny to think it that way xD) these 2 songs alone made more fnf devs inspided making b,d and even c sides of it with mark fighting the onaf characters or the fnac characters, and lore inspired things like "lore remix" from the seeks cool deltarune mod which basically is one of the most popular deltarune theorizers rap battling gaster aka the one pulling the strings in the game theory community and others also the last 2 songs are honeslty my personal favourite (unpopular opinion) are trapped, the spring fredbear song and the secret song from dsaf trapped literally its a take on what if spring fredbear actually was springtrap (also lets count on the fact that spring fredbear was the edited hoax the community thought it was springtrap from flipping the image in the teaser, which its in his sprites in the "original" version) and then kinda says "this is not real tho its all just in another another universe" and finally the song everyone agrees universally: the dsaf song. it is basically the henry miller boss fight at the end of the dsaf 3 good ending route where jack, dave (the guy that inspired even the creation of ourple guy as a whole ) and friends fight him it even replicates the order in which they die and destorying the sprites (the eye thingies) before destroying him, also if you finish the song without destroying the eyes you get this fun cutscene that basically tells you "you fucked up and so im still here, you failed" which its not in the original (i think? i never finished dsaf3 compleatly) but its coool music, art, reference material, charts: all bangers (oh ye btw the fnaf with the 3d models got updated, since everyone hated the original vs freddy faz, the team decided to remake the song, multiple times and then made an entire fnaf 1 mod and every animatronic have their own 3 song week, then the team made the fnaf 2 mod with the same style however they also made soooooo many extra songs that its a entire list by itself of references to the fnaf community as a whole) and then said "ye thats it" and then for a april fool they planned to make a "crappy fnaf 3 mod" that after became a really well made mod just becuase they were bored (i personally dont hate it, but i dont like it either, like there are literally 2 songs, phantom freddy sprites in my opinion have fun graphic and poses, but they dont fit him and they look goofy, and the sprigntrap entire song, ew no, but again, unpopular opinion, the endos song, funny af and creative) so calling the vs. freddy faz week mod its bad its fair, but its not a quick cash crab, or that the team doesnt care, becuase its like the "vs imposters" mod in a way, the first version of the mod it was literally called "vs red imposter" where the music was creative but it still sucked at for the time, but then boom "vs imposters v4" destroyed people's mind, just like the vs fnaf 2 mod did) btw this long wall of text its just a way to say, love fnf mods that care of their inspirations, actually of very well put fnf mods altogether, i have really good respect for some of the teams that made them (not the fnfsonic.exe one, even tho they made a amazing mod, but some of those people honestly shouldnt be on the internet ._. ) sorry if it was a huge 30 minute read xD
Good video! Some of the negative aspects were a bit harsh for me because these are independent artists and even if they are not good and more click-baity and caring towards the source material, there is still room for improvement. The best example the FNAF Mod you crapped on. Maybe the music is not that great, but bro, that mod took forever to make. It included a 3D model, so it was difficult for sure. 27:45 I did not understand what you meant by "I was too old for Madness Combat and Eddsworld", even though MC has been around since the early 2000s and Eddsworld since the Mid 2000s.
You know I think if I ever wanted to make a mod I think I would definitely take some advice from this video. It’s well organized and better than anything I watched. Awesome job with this. You deserve more recognition
26:20 might be off of the source material, but the devs made a confirmation explaining this apparently hypnos die if they fail to hypnotize someone, so hypno put all of his power into his head/brain causing his body to go limp
@@kaos-arts-n-stuff-idk i actually forgot where i got the first half. idk if they die if they fail to hypnotize ima check if it's true edit, yeah i can't find any results, idk if that's true or not.
I understand and disagree, mostly cause of the Ben drowned example, which was definitely a bit bare bones but I don't feel like the mod itself was soulless or made for clicks, if it was made for clicks they would have made something entirely different and more recognizable to the target audience of lil baby infants. (I still do respect your stance of this and would love to hear your thoughts about mine)
i mean like, anything rocking the whole "ben drowned" name is gonna be at some level made to cash in on the story's popularity. it's just too bad that funkin' drowned decided to just... not be a good adaptation while still riding that wave of fame. + like yeah most of fnf's fanbase is just fetuses but theyre not the ones recognizing ben drowned- the adults and older teenagers are.
@@CybenX_yt it doesn't have to be 100% accurate you know it seems to be a completely different take on the story also if you must know most people know ben drowned for well Ben not the arg, occult, etc the mod was a different take and was to appeal to people
@@matthewfletcher4471 when I played ben drowned, I didn't feel it was disrespectful, even though I don't know the source material, I knew something was off but it didn't feel disrespectful. I just felt, just like sonic.exe or tiky, that it was just another take. there was clear effort put in, and even if it misrepresented something, that's fine. Adapting ANYTHING to fit another universe already horribly misrepresents the source material. I mean I'm a huge kirby fan and my FE crossover concept for the 3 mage sisters barely brings up their connections to eachother. An important aspect. Sometimes things need to be cut out to fit another universe, but thats ok. Heck, BF would already be called out in that among us session by the crewmates regardless simply because he's humanoid. When the original creators don't work on something, there's very clearly going to be differences. If you really want a clickbait mod, one of my favorite mods is VS Neon from AdventNEON made by the original developer of the game itself to advertise. That's the example of a soulless mod... the only difference is that it has good music because the creator is the actual advent neon game's sole developer. I know that it's an advertising mod, but I love it. Also no ill will towards the developer, I actually helped back the game on kickstarter. I love the work of both, it really is just a soulless mod though.
@@CybenX_yt I actually think your reasonings for the Funkin Drowned mod being bait would also apply to the main week of Sonic.EXE, which is why I disagree with it. I think it's actually possible the maker of that mod got ben inspiration from another place that also didn't have the story right (E.g, an old fairly popular creepypasta RPG maker game called Creepypasta Town had the story wrong in hindsight), like I'm just saying, I've been into creepypastas for a long while and this is the first I'm hearing of a cult from Ben Drowned.
personally, i dont think its bad that it didnt follow the story of the original story, its a week with 1 song after all just a little passion project some people can throw together with high effort assets and music
8:44 I gotta say that the FNAF mod had a masive and incredible glow up. I mean, from being just another nostalgic mod with nothing special but bad songs to some of the best mods out there and an entire series of FNF x FNAf au mods
This is a pretty great video, you seem well informed and passionate about what you're saying. I just have one small problem with it. I really do not agree with 13:50. I may not be a modder, but I am an amaterur artist/writer, and I've been following a lot of modders for quite a while now. I've seen first-hand how hard it is for your mod to pick up steam when it doesn't have wacky new mechanics, or amazing music, or ground-breaking visuals. You say that mods with innovative new features should be rewarded, and I totally agree. Pretty sure most modders will aggree with that too. The complaint is that if your mod doesn't redefine what it means to make mods, then nobody will care about it. It's quite a tall order to ask everyone to make the next Vs Whitty mod. Sometimes people just wanna make something for fun. With what you say about the modders who get mad after their mod doesn't blow up, it's pretty disingenuous to say they're not putting any passion into their work, and just doing it for clicks. While I agree that yes, maybe some people are like that, most of them aren't. My greatest fear as an artist is that I'll invest my time into something only for nobody to care. What's the point in telling stories when nobody is listening? I believe those modders share my fear. So they make something that they know will get noticed. They take a property that they love and make a mod out of it. About the Funkin' Drowned mod. I've never played it, and I've never read Ben Drowned, but from what I've seen from that mod, the artists and musicians definitely put in a ton of effort. From what you say, the only downside seems to be the poor direction. I don't think it's fair to throw away all the work of the mod's team just because the direction misrepresents the story. I know that mod definitely wouldn't have gotten any attention if it didn't look and sound as great as it does. I don't know if my point has been articulated that well, but I hope you understand. Thank you for reading.
i mean, my point with that whole section is to say that if you're not pushing the medium forward, you have no right to be upset if you don't get attention. like, if your satisfaction with art you've made is based on the public reception to it, then you're not really making art, you're making a product to be consumed, and that kind of sucks. the best art has and will always come from a passion to create above all else. what's the point in telling stories is nobody is listening? well, to have the story be told at all, of course- maybe someone'll read it later down the line. hell, this video was at 300 views until yesterday, and that's all i thought it would ever get... but i didn't make it for any more than an audience of 1, so all that attention was a bonus, not the entire end goal. for funkin' drowned, i think it's a good mod, i say that in the video- but why is it using the title of a story that it clearly doesn't want to adapt? it should've been an OC mod, and i think we're in agreement on that. it got guaranteed attention because of the title, there's no doubt about that, and theres no doubt in my mind that that's the reason why its based on ben drowned in the first place, and that's kinda scummy
@@CybenX_yt Yeah, I guess you're right. I can't really argue with you about your reasoning for making this video. I think we just have different ideologies concerning art. I can't speak on the modders' intentions, but for me, I feel that the art I make affects me, so I want it to affect others, y'know? I want my art to reach the widest audience possible, so that it can make as many people happy as it possibly can. I feel like many artists would share my way of thinking, but does seem quite prideful to expect people to see your work right away. Hmm, maybe I should actually put some art out there before I provide commentary about making it, haha. Thanks again for reading.
Just to elaborate, since I think it supports the point I was trying to make... I'm actually perfectly fine uploading fan-art for other people, since It's usually made specifically for that person and I can just tag them and be sure they see it. The issue is when it comes to my own original content, I can't bring myself to post it because I have no idea how I'm meant to show it to people. Sorry for rambling about myself, but I just want to stress how I think a lot of modders are similar to me in this aspect. FNF modding is such a huge community, that getting noticed among the hundreds of other mods is quite hard without something else to piggyback off of. I still do agree that modders should value accuracy to the original content. Maybe it would be cool if FNF mods started trying to tell their own stories using pre existing characters, instead of just shoving someone from something else into FNF. Thank you.
@@CybenX_yt I think it uses the Ben Drowned title because the character in the mod is quite literally Ben. Yes, it's a different interpretation of Ben but it's still recognisable as Ben Drowned due to the minimal changes to the design and thus it'd make sense as to why the mod uses the title of Ben Drowned. It's clear that the mod is a passion project and not made for fame and clicks, the team tried to have fun making a mod featuring their interpretation of one of the most popular Creepypastas of all time. I don't see an issue with it, plus the whole thing isn't even too different: -The environment is the same -Ben doesn't look too different (he's got black goo on his arms and has a pitch black face and that's about it for all the noticeable differences) -The origin of the character is the same (the cult just isn't seen) It's easy to tell that this is all based on the Ben Drowned Creepypasta but with some minimal changes, there not too many changes to warrant a completely different title This is all my view on your argument, no bad blood, just my opinion. Other than the whole Funkin' Drowned thing, the video was great and put together pretty well!
Hey mate, I can really tell you put a lot of thought into this video and I must say WOW! At first I thought this was another commentary youtuber trying to jump on the "FNF BAD BECAUSE YES" bandwagon but now I see this is so much more! I wish you luck on your journey on RUclips and try not to forget me XD
No one could've expected it, but FNF mods became the new fandom medium to show it off in. The ease at which a group can make a mod nowadays with the modding resources provided, and of course some musical and artistic talent, has allowed it to really flourish and that's so cool.
I firmly, FIRMLY believe that vs Sonic.EXE is one of, if not THE, best FNF mods out there. It revived a community of creepypasta nerds, brought out new fans, and energized the already existing community of rhythm gamers. The fact that the people behind this marvelous mod are pushing past struggles and adding even more to this perfect mod shows just how much they care. It is truly the best mod I have ever played, let alone seen.
Based as fuck right here. Even when the controversy with _her_ happened, they didn't let this mod die out like many other controversy-hit mods, they kept going without her and now with the new director being more relaxed, fair and creative, the future of the mod is brighter than ever!
@@greenknight9000 exactly! I’m so proud of the .exe team. Some would give up, others wouldn’t even change anything, but vs sonic.exe has proved itself as one of the strongest, purest forms of dedication I’ve ever seen in any fan game ever.
5:58 the reason he looks like that is because some kid around 9-13 took the amazing herobrine mod and smudged the learning with pibby glitch thinking this will earn them a few fame when somebody plays it
I love this video alot. My thoughts on this. No, it is no unreasonable, really. I do get how mad and upsetting it is but sincerely- You can't really stop them, sadly. Have a few mods that i get so easily confused with how badly connected it is to the REAL story, like- in your example of Ben Drowned... I couldn't help but get so weirded out with how he is in sprites. But- Although badly connected, it was still enjoyable. So, it is no complaint. I totally get your point so much, yet there is no helping in it cuz Artwork is free for everyone and everyone does whatever with it. If it is good but badly connected or even bad but really good in connections, it is still art.
i completely agree with you! i think another example of a good "nostalgia" mod is the indie cross mod! (i say nostalgia very lightly because most of the games are pretty new) it has three weeks that each represent a different game, mechanics that fit the games theme (like the cuphead mechanics being EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and the sans mechanics using orange and blue notes), and the animation is AMAZING! it's honestly one of the highest production mods I've seen and the creators clearly are actual fans of the games they included. great job with the video! :D
I feel like the point on the Ben Drowned mod is honestly pretty iffy. I think the general vibe of the take is fine, obviously if you grew up with something, seeing it not represented in the most faithful manner is going to be at least a little upsetting, especially if said thing was very important to you. Thing is? I think this really misrepresents what the purpose of that mod seems to be which is not an intentional warping of the creepypasta for clout but rather someone wanted to make an earnest tribute to it while taking it in its own direction. Looking up Ben Drowned brings up a lot of images in the vein of the creature we see and to me kind of taps into some visual elements of the story. In particular I remember a point where Link looked warped and like his model was broken. Also and this is most important, FNF mods like this will always have one teeny tiny problem... The purpose of FNF mods is to set up a rap battle opponent. The Boyfriend here is rapping against a young boy spirit who's haunting a Zelda game. This concept is... well if you'll pardon my French, it's inherently fucking ridiculous. To me that in of itself fundamentally goes against the core of the story. It doesn't help matters that if we were to have a rap battle against the statue as it was in the original story? Well... it'd just be a statue with not much in the way of movement and if it did, it could easily come across as more silly than freaky. Moreover for a mod that doesn't really have cutscenes? I feel the vibe they were going for. They knew that the appeal of Ben Drowned is that of a haunted version of Majora's Mask, taking advantage of basic game visuals and twisting them and how creepy that Link statue looked. FNF is a different story being a rhythm game with people that are getting into this knowing it's a mod. So it feels like they knew things had to be massaged. In particular I appreciate we still got the Skull Kid laugh and the use of the bell ringing and the segment where the characters are underwater does a good job shifting to something more sad as it hints at the depressing story of Ben. Really the biggest criticism that can be flung at the mod is that with no cutscenes or anything to establish the point, it's a little hard to parse what's going on unless you know the creepypasta. To accuse the devs though of just being in it for the clout feels more than a little insulting to both the effort put into the mod and the devs and is very extreme.
Completely agreed. And at the time, cutscenes weren’t a huge thing or that common in mods, as Funkin’ Drowned was released almost 3 years ago (November 2021). So that criticism is sort of flimsy. I think that Cyben just really wanted to mod to completely follow the original creppypasta, which would be extremely difficult and confusing in the rap-battle context of FNF and it’s mods
To be honest, before FNF came out, I was really looking forward to it because it was being teased by Sr Pelo. Who I've been following up on ever since he's been working on the Micky Mouse videos that I still love to this day. The mods that came afterwards made me realize how much creativity people can have with beats and animations. Hell, look at the Gorefield mod. It's insanely good. I have to agree somewhat on people being desperate for clicks or not being too accurate with source materials. But I still will appreciate the work they put in for it if done for fun. I'm not apart of the community and don't know much of what's happening anymore but I've seen some arguments and controversy being thrown around. I'd like to stay away from that and keep my good memories from this game.
You really hit all the notes man. Im glad there is another person in this community who looks at the bad and ALSO the good. There is a lot of bad in the fnf community, but there is also a lot of good and I feel like a lot of commentary youtubers talking about fnf and people inside the community only look on the bad side. Im glad youre different
I feel like making a Five Nights at Freddy's FNF mod all about the Daycare Attendant. It will have three weeks in it. One called "Week D," which is all about the Daycare Attendant. The first song will be about Sun, the second song will be about Moon, and the third song will be about Total Eclipse. Another called "Week B," which is a secret week after you complete "Week D." The first song will be about Vanny, the second song will be about the Shattered Animatronics, and the third song will be about Burntrap. And then there's a secret secret week after you complete "Week B," and input a number of combinations in the title screen which will unlock "Week lol," which is a joke week. The first song will be about MapBot, the second song will be about MatPat, and the third song will be about Burntrap again. I plan to have the style of the mod in the style of the guy who makes the SFM FNAF mods, (Yes, I will credit him for the original style) And I want the songs to be bangers
Honestly my problem with most fnf mods is that they put more effort into the story and cutscenes than into the actual songs, OCs or characters that already exist. I’m glad someone finally pointed out how most mods are just thrown together but i had no idea it was for attention.
Somethin’ kinda bugged me about Lord X: You should actually give the game a solid shot, ( not any of the shitty ones ) since it is quite high quality, and expands on sonic.Exe that the original could never reach. ( Also, encore songs for Sonic.EXE are a banger )
15:38 it wasn't really a bait, it was originally just a meme. a full on joke. and eventually became rlly good lol. the fact it's still getting updated too-
Another mod that's one of my personal favourites is the Mario's Madness mod. It can be described as the Mario equalvilant as VS Sonic.EXE, going through the history of the creepy stuff in the Mario fandom. It really struck a chord with me since, while I like Sonic, I'm not fully aware of all the creepy fandom stuff, so I feel like it didn't have the same personal affect on me as others. But I know a lot about all the Mario creepy stuff, so it was really cool for stuff I haven't seen in ages to appear in this mod like "I Hate You" Luigi, Racist Mario and even the creepy cut game over screen from Luigi's Mansion that even had references to the theory that Luigi is dead in Luigi's Mansion because he hung himself. And even the newer references like Wario's Apparition were really fun to see.
I agree with everything in this video except for your take on Funkin Drowned. I highly doubt that it was nostalgia bait because of how high effort it was, but you are entitled to your opinion. It could also because I'm biased to Ben's chromatic, but I digress. Great video!
As someone who grew up with creepypastas like sonic.exe and slenderman I can 100% agree that certain mods can be hit or miss when it comes to the respect of the source material, like an example I can think of is the mario madness mod which takes a bunch of mario related creepypastas and creepy moments in mario games in general and makes it all into one singular mod. If you play it you can tell that the creators did their research and put time into it which I love and hate about the fnf community because either someone doesn't do their research like the funkin drowned mod you mentioned earlier or someone actually puts love and care into a mod like mario's madness and sonic.exe.
Hey X, I can tell that you care a lot about the content you're making and it's fair that you would want to see the nuance and care put into projects tied to things you identify with strongly, but I think that running with the idea that people who put out media that falls short of certain expectations aren't even trying, or are doing it 'for clicks', can do more harm in these kinds of fan sustained communities. It leads you to assume things about a person's worth within the context of the medium or their work ethic, when it could have taken them all they had just to get as far as they did. That it isn't enough for them to be proud of their work, they have to measure up to people who are doing more than they currently can. Criticism is fine, and your opinion on a piece is valid but treating derrivitive works or purposeful parodies as something other than art with its own merit and potential for influence can be stifling when you treat the source material as something with objective reverence, and that its deconstruction doesn't also push things forward. i.e. your example about how Sonic.exe gave rise to the fnf mod here. Thinking about how young a good portion of the fanbase likely is, or how this could be someone's first time working on projects like these, as well as taking into account the time it takes to make something so ambitious, there's a lot of reasons people's works can or won't meet you where you're at. I feel like, unless there is confirmation of the creator(s) having made such comments about why they put something out in the state they did, that there isn't necessarily a need to assume a reason. All you can do is look at what has been presented, and what that alone speaks to, as well as the standards you have set to grade it by, just to be fair to anyone who just wants to get better.
man you do not understand how AMAZING this video hits hard for me, you inspire me so much and soon I wanna be like you one day and call out the stuff that ruins a community and make content like yours, I really hope you keep up the AMAZINGGGG work dude! good job and im def gonna sub :)
Lord X (The other sonic.exe with an "X" on the stomach) is actually from a another version of sonic.exe, idk if i would call it a remaster , but , it's like all of sonic.exe , but better. The name's "SONIC PC PORT"
I remember during 2021 me and a couple of friends wanted to make a creepypasta themed mod called “nostalgia terrors” and the plot was gonna have bf sent through a portal to a world with creepypasta characters running chaos The mod was eventually cancelled cause the sprite artist left the community and the mod as a whole just fell apart I REALLY wanna bring back the mod idea cause I feel it has a lot of potential but I’m currently directing a mod called “funkin with Internet horror” it’s basically bf rap battling against internet horror stuff like the Mandela catalogue, the Walten files etc
YOOO, banger video my guy, you can feel the passion put behind the video and i (christian) think that's what makes the best videos. Keep up the great work ben!
10:06 "still running" i'm sorry matey but the ARG ended on october 31st 2020. that was when the last video was uploaded, Jadusable hasn't stated that it's getting continued and the server previously used to discuss the ARG has turned into a general server for Jad's podcast.
Something you didn't mention is that Lost Silver's song has a secondary mechanic in addition to typing out what the Missingno spell. 3 times over the course of the song, Celebi appears and uses Perish Song, which permanently reduces your max health by 20% for the rest of the song. Perish Song is a significant part of the Lost Silver creepypasta so it's both a neat little extra mechanic and a reference to the source material.
15:31 Here after VS. Impostor V4, and I can say that almost EVERYTHING about the mod has improved, despite already being really fucking good. Check it out.
Lost Silver's story from what I recall had you walking in halls of dead trainers in a mass expanse until you fought a desperate suicidal Red. In the beginning, Gold, GSC's protagonist, is rushing around a maze (probably bellsprout tower, a place for local monks) as fast as he can to save his dying starter pokemon Cyndaquil. Unown begin spawning in your party, spelling "Hurry." You fail to save it. It's your fault. Then we respawn in a new location, this hall I mentioned. We have every badge, the symbol of victory over the regions strongest trainers. However, most of these people you cannot talk to, cannot see. Your name is now ??? and your money is infinite. If I remember correctly, your time is also very high, the game claiming you spent 999 hours- which is the max a game will register before it stops tracking. It's not explictly stated from the cartridge file my friend gave me, but from what I gathered Gold felt horrendous guilt as a 10 year old for letting his only friend die in a place like that- a maze with no exit, an end with no prize. In this he went on a spree defeating every gym leader imaginable. I'm only half sure he kills most of these people in his deep disillusion with the world he lived in. His sprite is greyed out, he is empty as a person. We're in the hallway section and the farther he walks the more opressive the music becomes. You then awaken in the grave of your dead partner, before respawning in the bell sprout tower. Except there are no monks- it's just Red, the games previous protagonist and the world champion. He's here to stop you- at least that's what it initially seems like. He sends out his iconic pikachu, who's sprite sees his face twisted in sadness. He's level 255. Which should be entirely impossible, and kind of sets of alarms already. Then you send out Celebi, a minor time god in pokemon. It's in shiny form- a rare genetic mutation where there pigment is very different then whatever they happen to be ussually. The implication here is that you're a dead vengful ghost who died in misery and came back from the grave to haunt this tower and to finish your initial journey. You succeeded, returned, stronger then ever, with a time god to make sure it stayed that way. You can't be overwriten. This is the world's fate for what it did to cyndaquil. Off of memory, bit by bit you lose yourself. First your legs. Then your arms. Then your eyes as blood pours from every part of you. This slow reveal that you're a vengeful, depressed, dead child who wants to remain the world's strongest for a horrible turn of events that happened to a bright 10 year old is very deeply uncomfortable when you give it a bit of thought. The only way to rest his soul is to get the other world's strongest to fight him and end it once and for all. Red fails. The symbolism of those particular body parts reminds me of another rpg, Earthbound, where one of the main characters in exchange for ultimate power gives up on material possession- even over his own body. He removes his limbs, and his eyes, and is taken over for a moment by a powerful spirit before they converge. I assume this happened here with Cyndaquil and Gold finally being togethor one last time, using Celebi as a way to make sure nothing can hold a candle to them in life and death. Celebi has just one move this entire battle. Perish song. 5 counts/turns, and every pokemon who's heard it will die. It slowly counts down as Pikachu is forced to flail in desperation, but he too dies, and Celebi with it. In a very under the hood way, Pikachu uses destiny bond, a move that binds a pokemons fate to another- almost as if to make sure pikachu himself stays dead, and doesn't end up like Gold and Cyndaquil. Now it's just Red and Gold, or from what the game now suggests his name is, Lost Silver. Red's sprite morphs and he's decapitated. He's gone and now nothing can stop you. But, perhaps this is all Gold wanted, or Lost Silver, or whatever this kid became, because right after he's suddenly in his childhood home. There's nothing for him here. Everywhere outside of it is a black void of nothing. We look down and see he no longer has a torso. He is a floating head. He has infinte money, every badge, and has essentially completed what could be done. Throughout the game the unown have been keeping us company, sending messages in 6 letter form, to conform to the party space a trainer can have of 6. And the final message is almost like this, relief. Free of burden. It spells, "No More." Gold then walks out of his house, the screen fades to black, as he then sees the much younger, very whole version of himself, and says "Goodbye forever." He uses the move nightmare. And then it returns to cyndaquils grave, which is also now our grave. He can finally rest. They both can. There is no body parts anymore, we're just nothing in a grave. The unown speak, "I'm dead." The badges are all skulls, implying they all died too. TL:dR- It's just a somewhat non explicit story of how a child droven to insanity and deep depression after his only friend died in a tower, the two merged into one, slaughtered everything they deemed responsible and finishing their journey to rest their souls. I'm honestly not a huge fan of this story but I enjoy the story telling done creatively using the unown and the environment.
The ironic thing is that, despite not playing FNF at all,I've been annoyed by a HELLHOLE FULL OF HUGGY WUGGIES. You know what I mean if you've seen those types of ads all over the place. No mods I overheard are actual representations lately... If I had to make a mod,I can try introduce the true nature of references if I had to... because there weren't many challenges for literally every mod video I watched, and I would make innovative challenges for the passionate kind of challengers... it felt like... pushovers. Apparently, there's a high risk of copyright, though if we're not careful.
This is why I don't care for Antipathy anymore. It would have been a perfectly cool Madness Combat mod, but then the creators started applying their headcanons to it for no reason. Like, one of Hank's pronouns is "gore"? And he's married to Tricky?
. . . What No seriously, what the fuck see this- this is exactly why outsiders could give less of a shit about the FNF modding community if they decided to learn more about their favourite mod makers
i genuinely don't have a take on this since madness combat was always kind of a miss for me, but it's discourse echoing the same points, which is super cool!!! i'm glad more people are talking about this, i'm sure its WAY more of a widespread problem than either of us even know at this point
Even though I disagree with some points you made your point clear and I love how you layout everything, made it very easy to understand, and somehow made it very very fun to listen to, good job on this video keep up the good work :)
Hey, that weegee mod has turned into an actually good and respective mod called “YTP Invasion” and the entire fnaf 1 mod has been remade and now it’s better and mostly respective
@@CybenX_yt OOH, okay, I gotcha. Thanks for clarifying! :D

This feels like the placeebo effect like they say its a good mod and i think its good but it seems listening it now its abseloute dog shit
The Hypno is drawn like alot of Fanart with human characteristics, and they added lore to the head flying off (Hypno had poured all his psychic power into his head)
This is supposed to take sometime after the original creepypastas and Hypno I'm 90% sure isn't the original but a Hypno that lost its trainer and turned evil.

I guess they learned their lesson.
i feel like he over reacted about ben drowned
Its because they werent like planning a real big thing for Ben Drowned. Most fans of the story I see nowadays only know the base level story from way back when, or some odd adaptation if they're unlucky. @@MoogusMan I'm having a stroke, what ?

The saddest part of the Freddy mod you showed was that it really could have been great:
-Looked great for the game it was touching on
-A Freddy week where they sing the LivingTombstone songs would have been fantastic
-The style is unique, it was one of the first times I saw them combine FNF’s 2D with 3D… dunno if that’s very common today.
The thing that REALLY ruins it is that Freddy’s vocals are garbage, which is a really bad thing to have in a game like this

8:35 Funny how both the VS. Weegee Mod and the VS. Freddy Mod have gone through a couple massive updates and are now actual really good mods now, their also called YTP Invasion and VS. FNaF 1 now.
YTP invasion is Vs. Weegee v4
But there's YTP invasion v3 a.k.a Vs. Weegee v6
Thank you for letting modders know how to properly pay homage to the source material.
omg wow hi i never thought the vid would reach anyone that i talked about in it- honestly, the fact that it's blown up so much in the span of ONE DAY is freaking me out
what's crazy to me is i never actually considered your mod super nostalgia bait-y, maybe it was because weegee has so little source material to go off of, maybe not! like, you're the LAST person i'd expect to really **resonate** with the essay's message because i genuinely didn't know that any of the criticism applied to your mod.
if i'm being completely 1000% honest, i never beat the first week because i just didn't want to deal with horribly spammy charting (product of the era, not really your fault- we can blame ballistic for those months of terrible charts). i actually didn't know the mod expanded into a ytp celebration mod until i looked up footage for the video, and even then i never really looked into it further because of that initial bad experience with the mod... and that was truly doing you and your work a disservice, and i'm really sorry about that.
its truly incredible to hear that this kind of criticism turned into a better final product with ytp invasion! i'm sure if i had given it a shot i would've put it in the video (in the positive section, i'm sure).
Heh, “No More Singing, It’s time for gaming! BARS AS HOT AS THE MOMS I’M BANGING!!”

I made a mod for fnf that didn't go anywhere, but I was fine with that. I was just happy I was able to make something and that I managed to do something for a game I wanted to give more attention to.

For funkin drowned, I prefer to see this as "A personal take" on the creepy pasta.
Of course it's not the exact same as the creepy pasta, but I see this as a fresh take on the character.
Of course, that's only my opinion.
kirby
That’s the thing, a personal take is fine… but how far until it’s not a rendition of that character and is just a new thing of its own? I don’t get Ben drowned from the mods design, I see a weird attempt at mashing dark link and normal link together
For me its that
For FUNKIN' drowned, it feels like a take combining both the surface of the whole story, and like, major fan art, combining it into the design, and a much more simple story, rather than adding the cult and everything
Since, let's be real, most people only know the surface story of Ben drowned anyway
Robotnics mean bean machine because I especially loved the music from that game) but back then, it was very similar to the basic 3 song week with very little unique things to make it special, sort of like the rushed “click baity” style
But after watching this video and seeing the examples of what makes a mod great and what makes a mod baity, it’s really given me a new perception on what it truly takes to pay respect to a certain source material when making a mod based on it and it gave me the chance to rethink how exactly I would want a mod based on a video game to be like
I probably won’t ever make a mod because I have no experience with coding lol. But if I ever decide to one day make one, I’ll definitely be sure to remember this video, as well as do research on the source material and take feedback/criticism when necessary
When I made Pibby corrupted, it wasn’t about clout, we took time, and we had quality control, it was fun, but I agree with this.

A good FNF mod is a mod with good art, good music (unless the mod is actively trying not to be serious, which is fine) and mechanics that are easy enough to manage (unless the mod isn’t supposed to be easy, in which case you do you but don’t make it too impossible).
*A celebration.*
The original game was made to celebrate Newgrounds, and the mods like Lullaby, Vs. Imposter and Vs. Sonic.exe we’re made to celebrate their source material too.
Vs. Ben Drowned and some of the other less faithful mods out there, they’re ones that just _didn’t get it._
As for the mods like Vs. Whitty and some of the others out there that are completely original, that’s completely fine to not have a source material. Like I said, you do you.
But at the end of the day, *FNF isn’t FNF if it’s not a faithful celebration of it’s source material.*
After all, a good song never ends.
The fanfics, the Aus etc side
That Ben is known for black goo dripping eyes and even hands in some fanfics.

I knew it was gonna be good but damn the effort is insane and was definitely worth the wait

There is absolutely nothing wrong with straying from the source material at times to create something unique and creative; that's why fanart, fanfiction, and even mods exist within fandoms to begin with.

This is a Fucking joke

Fnf modders after Figuring out that the age of consent is 16 and not 7
The only thing I disagree with in this video are the parts where some Mods are considered “bad” and are “disrespectful”
I feel like Mods like 8:56 and 10:57 are actually great and do have effort put into them but the reason why they look like *that* is because not everyone is talented and they want to pay respect to the things that they’re fans of but just aren’t that skilled as others in the community are.
I mean, yes its a rythm gane but i dont think that its the only reason
And again, hes not complaining for the music of the mod, hes talking about the source material
Damn bro, I ain't readin all that.
@@unnamed9482 That’s why I didn’t add a TL;DR :)
I agree with this, honestly
Like, there are absolutely mods that are released just for clicks, that Squid Game one being a great example, but to say that something is effortless when it has well-made art and music just because it doesn't directly match the source material is very much a reduction.

This video was really well made, good job! I really liked the way you took criticism and praise in this video, great job!
i admire seeing someone criticize all the half-assed trend-hopping mods out there. nearly all of your points are properly thought out and conveyed smoothly.
although, with all due respect towards your amount of passion here, i have some problems with your criticisms against funkin' drowned.
that said, i at least want to try making a case in defense of the mod. *(this is gonna be a long one; tl;dr will be at the end)*
for starters, i get that ben's design among other things in the mod aren't accurate to the creepypasta, but to use that and other minor stuff to make such a big assumption that the team didn't care about making the mod is a big leap.
there just doesn't seem to be enough on the table to prove that it was due to a lack of care specifically.
creepypastas aren't immune from having creative liberties taken here and there.
to add horror in places they didn't exist before, bandbud's team made hypno an ominous and towering monster who lurks in the shadows. hypno's lullaby as a mod wouldn't have as much of an atmospheric impact if it stuck with the semi-relevant rom-hack's look (which had a normal-sized hypno in broad daylight)
you could always take creative liberties to mix things up in a fun way too, which is why i'm pretty sure the funkin' drowned team wanted to take a unique spin on ben's look (which would also do better in explaining the twitter response you brought up).
of course it's possible to take too many creative liberties with something but then that brings up the discussion of exactly how much you have to change something before it's not the same anymore.
it's fine to be upset about how botched the mod is as an adaptation, but you *have* to back up your claim with way more than just ben's looks if you want to make such big claims about the team or their intentions.
as it stands, it just feels like you're trying to build a story-high sand castle with one small shovel.
and that's not even taking into account how you've used the "they don't care" mantra for both your thumbnail _and_ your title, which just sends your already extreme claim overboard.
funkin' drowned isn't like most of the crudely-made video game mods that only slap vocals on top of said game's OST.
terrible fate was a song made with love, and it shows that whoever composed it had fun in doing so. (but the same can be said for the charters and programmers as well)
even with that in mind, i'm pretty sure funkin' drowned's also unique due to having a complete scene-change (feat. completely different character sprites) midway through a song.
all i'm saying is, that sorta detail doesn't seem like something a careless team would code in if they wanted to crank it out for nostalgia and clout.
i can't underestimate how important your evaluations of a mod's intentions are in a medium so commonly exploited for fame, but it feels like your love for ben drowned is preventing you from making a clear judgement of the mod as a whole.
*the tl;dr section*
*> pointing out inaccuracies in the mod is fine; using said inaccuracies to claim that the team didn't care about the mod as a whole is going a bit overboard.*
*> "not caring" isn't the only possible reason as to why things look the way they do here. given the lack of evidence, the team may or may not be just as passionate about ben drowned as you are. who's to say it wasn't done as a unique twist to a classic formula?*
*> you have perfectly fine criticisms against mods that're only made for clout or fame; you just don't have enough substantial evidence beyond surface-level elements to prove that funkin' drowned is one of them.*
You make a good point.
yeah i agreed with almost all of these point expect for that, it just rubbed me the wrong way and i could not help but feel like its a bit too overreaching or overreacting? i could be not understanding but what you say is exactly what i have in mind about it
honestly one of my personal favourite fnf mods that people that actually cares about both games they combine its probably mods like vs.ourple guy which has a bit of everything, the original characters are a bit rewritten (which originally it wasnt the case, but i feel it makes a bit more of sense since some of the extras songs based more on the "ocs or not og fnaf stuff" are linked more then the actual stuff, i will be going back to this later) also becuase apparently the lore of the mod it takes in another universe where fnaf its just a "funny arcade machine series of games" a bit like fnaf hw tell you "all the rumours are fake created by a rouge indie game dev that made fnaf 1-6 as a joke" and that hw was a "silly game that takes fun of these rumours to say nothing of this is real" when of course... it is (im not gonna spoil you this ;] play the mod its fun as hell)
the 1st week its more on the joke of purple guy as a concept, you know, a random guy killing some kiddos but this version its just memed becuase its hilerious, i mean most of the fnaf games are a joke, from the storytelling to some designs (im speaking as an old fnaf fan xD) the first song its just him being goofy, the second song has wayy more references to fnaf 1 like the golden freddy and phone guy appearing in the middle of the song, then the 3rd song takes place basically in the fnaf 3 minigames where our ourple guy destroys the animatronics one by one and then springtraps himself like a dumbass xD
the old second song, now as the 1st of the extras its about the orange guy from fnaf 6 going to jr's and being depressed until he puts a WHITE FEDORA AND BECOMES THE PERSONAFICATION OF MICHEL JACKSON, why? becuase midnight motorist music is pure PEAK (i listen to that soundtrack for hours xD)
there is a cool henry song (i prefer the v.2 song but the v.3 has a cool cutscenes) where it takes place where henry literally is in the fnaf 6 fire and then baby kills him as referenced in the books "the silver eyes trilogy"
if i keep going there are a fuckton of references i can list, however im gonna count 4 more
these are nothing to do with the og fnaf but with the content they have touched for example this mod it the mod that brought us "bite" and "lore" which are the songs featuring basically the first episode of markplayer fighting all the animatronics (and in v3 they added that all the yt hud actually works! you can skip part of the song by pressing the skip button, skip parts of the characters by closing the doors on them early, boop freddy nose, and if you press the pause button you pause the game xD) and basically the matpat going so insane that tries to sing ourple guy and then scott cawthon butting in the song himself to stop them from actually spilling the story (this is my take anyway, thats not what happends in detail, but its funny to think it that way xD)
these 2 songs alone made more fnf devs inspided making b,d and even c sides of it with mark fighting the onaf characters or the fnac characters, and lore inspired things like "lore remix" from the seeks cool deltarune mod which basically is one of the most popular deltarune theorizers rap battling gaster aka the one pulling the strings in the game theory community and others
also the last 2 songs are honeslty my personal favourite (unpopular opinion) are trapped, the spring fredbear song and the secret song from dsaf
trapped literally its a take on what if spring fredbear actually was springtrap (also lets count on the fact that spring fredbear was the edited hoax the community thought it was springtrap from flipping the image in the teaser, which its in his sprites in the "original" version) and then kinda says "this is not real tho its all just in another another universe"
and finally the song everyone agrees universally: the dsaf song. it is basically the henry miller boss fight at the end of the dsaf 3 good ending route where jack, dave (the guy that inspired even the creation of ourple guy as a whole ) and friends fight him it even replicates the order in which they die and destorying the sprites (the eye thingies) before destroying him, also if you finish the song without destroying the eyes you get this fun cutscene that basically tells you "you fucked up and so im still here, you failed" which its not in the original (i think? i never finished dsaf3 compleatly) but its coool
music, art, reference material, charts: all bangers
(oh ye btw the fnaf with the 3d models got updated, since everyone hated the original vs freddy faz, the team decided to remake the song, multiple times and then made an entire fnaf 1 mod and every animatronic have their own 3 song week, then the team made the fnaf 2 mod with the same style however they also made soooooo many extra songs that its a entire list by itself of references to the fnaf community as a whole) and then said "ye thats it" and then for a april fool they planned to make a "crappy fnaf 3 mod" that after became a really well made mod just becuase they were bored (i personally dont hate it, but i dont like it either, like there are literally 2 songs, phantom freddy sprites in my opinion have fun graphic and poses, but they dont fit him and they look goofy, and the sprigntrap entire song, ew no, but again, unpopular opinion, the endos song, funny af and creative) so calling the vs. freddy faz week mod its bad its fair, but its not a quick cash crab, or that the team doesnt care, becuase its like the "vs imposters" mod in a way, the first version of the mod it was literally called "vs red imposter" where the music was creative but it still sucked at for the time, but then boom "vs imposters v4" destroyed people's mind, just like the vs fnaf 2 mod did)
btw this long wall of text its just a way to say, love fnf mods that care of their inspirations, actually of very well put fnf mods altogether, i have really good respect for some of the teams that made them
(not the fnfsonic.exe one, even tho they made a amazing mod, but some of those people honestly shouldnt be on the internet ._. )
sorry if it was a huge 30 minute read xD
Holy crap im not even into fnf but this was amazing your video essays are banging
The Zanta mod has most likely made Zanta Claws a cult holiday classic in my opinion.
You know I think if I ever wanted to make a mod I think I would definitely take some advice from this video. It’s well organized and better than anything I watched. Awesome job with this. You deserve more recognition

might be off of the source material, but the devs made a confirmation explaining this
apparently hypnos die if they fail to hypnotize someone, so hypno put all of his power into his head/brain causing his body to go limp

I think it's actually possible the maker of that mod got ben inspiration from another place that also didn't have the story right (E.g, an old fairly popular creepypasta RPG maker game called Creepypasta Town had the story wrong in hindsight), like I'm just saying, I've been into creepypastas for a long while and this is the first I'm hearing of a cult from Ben Drowned.
personally, i dont think its bad that it didnt follow the story of the original story, its a week with 1 song after all
just a little passion project some people can throw together with high effort assets and music
Thank you for reading.
during 13:50 I cringed a bit lol
i mean, my point with that whole section is to say that if you're not pushing the medium forward, you have no right to be upset if you don't get attention. like, if your satisfaction with art you've made is based on the public reception to it, then you're not really making art, you're making a product to be consumed, and that kind of sucks. the best art has and will always come from a passion to create above all else. what's the point in telling stories is nobody is listening? well, to have the story be told at all, of course- maybe someone'll read it later down the line. hell, this video was at 300 views until yesterday, and that's all i thought it would ever get... but i didn't make it for any more than an audience of 1, so all that attention was a bonus, not the entire end goal.
for funkin' drowned, i think it's a good mod, i say that in the video- but why is it using the title of a story that it clearly doesn't want to adapt? it should've been an OC mod, and i think we're in agreement on that. it got guaranteed attention because of the title, there's no doubt about that, and theres no doubt in my mind that that's the reason why its based on ben drowned in the first place, and that's kinda scummy
I don't see an issue with it, plus the whole thing isn't even too different:
-The environment is the same
-Ben doesn't look too different (he's got black goo on his arms and has a pitch black face and that's about it for all the noticeable differences)
-The origin of the character is the same (the cult just isn't seen)
It's easy to tell that this is all based on the Ben Drowned Creepypasta but with some minimal changes, there not too many changes to warrant a completely different title
This is all my view on your argument, no bad blood, just my opinion.
Monochrome is amazing. Juno Songs made a lyrical cover of it that, in my opinion, catches the creepypasta perfectly.
I love it but I don't think I've ever seen sonic exe have crystals on his quills

Let's also not forget FNF is still a work in progress. The devs have put their noses to the grind to put out the full game.
Honestly my problem with most fnf mods is that they put more effort into the story and cutscenes than into the actual songs, OCs or characters that already exist. I’m glad someone finally pointed out how most mods are just thrown together but i had no idea it was for attention.
Oh
"Niche little indie game"

Banbudds will always have respect from all of us for his massive amount of effort
Agreed
man you do not understand how AMAZING this video hits hard for me, you inspire me so much and soon I wanna be like you one day and call out the stuff that ruins a community and make content like yours, I really hope you keep up the AMAZINGGGG work dude! good job and im def gonna sub :)

Here after VS.
It spells, "No More."
Gold then walks out of his house, the screen fades to black, as he then sees the much younger, very whole version of himself, and says "Goodbye forever." He uses the move nightmare.

Is this a FNAF reference?
"just make a mod about a goo monster"
bob: uh
Who????
And he's married to Tricky?
. . . What
No seriously, what the fuck
see this- this is exactly why outsiders could give less of a shit about the FNF modding community if they decided to learn more about their favourite mod makers
The marriage between Hank and Tricky is just a joke, so no worries.
@@instartist_0871 nahh bro, still.
i genuinely don't have a take on this since madness combat was always kind of a miss for me, but it's discourse echoing the same points, which is super cool!!! i'm glad more people are talking about this, i'm sure its WAY more of a widespread problem than either of us even know at this point
@@clownbone wym still, it's a joke
Even though I disagree with some points you made your point clear and I love how you layout everything, made it very easy to understand, and somehow made it very very fun to listen to, good job on this video keep up the good work :)
Hey, that weegee mod has turned into an actually good and respective mod called “YTP Invasion” and the entire fnaf 1 mod has been remade and now it’s better and mostly respective
Sonic.exe, Mario's madness, indicross, vs tricky, vs witty, vs tabi, ect have effort put onto them.
