Oh, yes! The boiling alive scene is one of the most memorable from the book. That scene and the eye-of-the-hurricane scene that happens later in the saga have lived rent-free in my brain for a little over two decades!

I read this one when I was a teen and remember it being really really good. I'm just at the start of the video and I haven't seen the tv adaptation yet, but I wonder if it includes Tai-Pan and the rest of the series. Also, I'm realizing that teen me read and liked a lot of chonky sagas.

Also, I didn't realise it at the time, but could the name Blackthorn have been chosen for the symbolism of the tree?
(Quoting from the top google result for brevity:) Blackthorn is associated with warfare, wounding and death, however this is also a plant of guarding.
    🤔

The thing about a good adaptation is that unfortunately what will define it's quality is how good is the adaptor at editing the original work. If you don't know what to add and what to remove or maintain the final results will always be a mess

When I read the book I remember thinking that the emphasis on Blackthorn's sexual encounters is a bit much. I understood that sexuality needs to be presented bc there are differences between the english & the japanese way, but other characters talking repeatedly about how good he is in bed, the size of his penis etc was kinda weird to me.
I watched Mertkaykay's analysis of IT by S King and she noticed how badly Beverly is written (as in men writing women) and that one of the boys, who seems to be a self insert of the author, has an out of nowhere and going nowhere (and while she has another love interest) sex scene w her when they reunite as adults, in which he gives her a series of orgasms that strain the reader's suspension of disbelief. This while we're often told how sexy and how young she looks for her age.
This made Mertkaykay feel, keeping in mind how disconnected that scene is from the rest of the book, that it was an author's fantasy of banging the hot girl and being great at it, which he wanted to fulfill even if just in fiction. (she explained it better w more arguments and it adds up)
And watching this I realised I had the same feeling about Blackthorn's sexual activities' descriptions and part of his and Mariko's relationship in the book. I'm glad it was avoided in the show.

I very much agree with you on this and the parallel to "It" is very interesting, I am tempted to give it a reread with these glasses on because perhaps since the book is a childhood favourite, I haven't really "noticed" that Bill would be an author insert. 😊

I sadly couldn't get past the weird sex stuff in the Shogun book, that and being intimidated by the length and density caused me to put it down a couple hundred pages in. Although it was very interesting for a while as I was reading it and if not for that I would have loved it

I think the best adaptations work best when the book isn't tha great to begin with.

That’s an interesting perspective and to be fair, a great visionary with a great team can adapt a bad/ok written work well but, when the source material is amazing and is treated with deference we get things like Shogun which genuinely cannot compare. Editing to add that the last couple seasons of GoT had little to no source material from Martin and it majorly tanked so that aspect doesn’t have much weight imo when you put it in practice. On the other hand WoT had amazing source material and shitty team and that tanked. For me the team adapting the work is bound to make or break it.
