    This book sounds so interesting and so thrilling. Trypophobia is one thing, *medical* trypophobia is a whole other thing, bleh but horrifically interesting to me. Took me back to when we learned all about those horrible worms of nature back in biology and anatomy class, heard about a fair amount of the one you all mentioned, especially the one the life straw was a huge progress for. By the way, thanks for adding the "mango worms" on my search tab Katie, lol, bleh (you don't have to look it up, other morbidly curious people, you'll also see some sad looking dogs if you do). It's hilarious irony that afterwards when I scrolled down and saw all the sad emojis with their knives, I just think, "Aw man, they're so hungry..."

Although I don't have money (in foreign exchange) to be a part of the discord, I very much adore and get inspired by your channel, on my reading and writing endeavours. For the horror era, I've decided to delve into Junji Ito's short story collection. I'm just so enamored by the details and the page turning horror of it. It's so satisfying to see something so well crafted, so close to perfect in its own kind.

    Darcy Coates writes light horror. It can be entertaining, but not really scary. She uses every movie cliche and describes the monsters too much. I've read a few of her books because they are relaxing, but it's like reading novel versions of hundreds of horror movies. Also, she uses zombies too much. Personally, I find zombies boring. But she's a fun read for a rainy afternoon.

    One of the best adaptation of Sherlock Holmes comes from, surprisingly, Soviet Union, with Vasiliy Livanov as Holmes. He is definitely not an asshole. Funnily, the only character who isn't done justice in that adaptation is Henry Baskerville.

    Question. What did y'all think about the Outlander series? I liked them (other than the terrible racism toward the Chinese guy) until about the 6th book. The wheels completely fell off. The latest book was a confusing travesty. I kept wondering if I fell asleep during parts of it, even though it was an audible download and I was sewing while listening. I couldn't read the books by text because of the phonetic accents on everything, but Davina Porter, incomparable lady, sold me with her narration.

    I sobbed at the end of the book 'cause somehow that intire "bonding" between Pat and Thetis leading into him finally reconecting to Achilles got down bad into my feelings, BUT OH BOY was I pissed the intire time, like giving my tears to the author was my defeat 😂 I read Circe a while after that, and then Galathea cause why not, just to make this clear to myself: I fucking hate Miller's writing??? Her storys feels like a very rough first draft in the sense of "Im gonna lay down how I want this book to go and then Im gonna flesh out the characters and make adaptions along the way" but then she never did. Cause the main characters are so dry and hollow?? And also the pacing is so wtf?? And I did, in fact, only picked this book for the soft boys sad romance, did not care about accuracy with the illiad, yet here I am, dissapointed and somewhat regretful (is that how its writen? English is not my first language)

I agree with all of Shad's politics but that won't stop me from saying that this was a terrible book. I also appreciate you guys leaving politics out of this review and just focusing on the book itself. Most of your criticisms were valid and mirrored a lot of my own.

    As an ex- Mormon, some stuff reguarding forgiveness, sexual shame, and how Shad poorly tries to express redemption are parallel to LDS doctrine and beliefs. The misogyny is yikes, but low-key accurate to Mormon beliefs. A lot of the weird shit he has expressed in this book feels tied to his political views.

  • @spacewinter
    @spacewinter 2 дня назад

    As a veteran, her books didnt achieve a believable military structure imo. It would have been better if their world had something similar to an ROTC, to train kids in the various branches from teens(scribes, infrantry, riders, healers) regardless of families being able to afford it. Then, when they are adults, send whoever qualifies to the war college. Those who don't get to live and get put in positions that suit them(even if its secretarial, mundane jobs). Then when you get to the college, everyone is ready and trained and there will be less casualties. ALSO, WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO KILL EACH OTHER? THAT MAKES NO SENSE and only serves to hurt the mission readiness and give them PTSD before even going to the fleet. The leadership gives waay too much power to the college student/wing leader. A wing leader is a role that trains then to be an officer. Another point of confusion for me. Why do they all turn into officers? Who are the enlisted?

    • @unresolvedtextualtension
      @unresolvedtextualtension 3 дня назад

      I mean, yeah. My political views impacts how I interact with a story. As humans, our views, experiences, politics, ideologies all come together to create our taste and our experiences with certain media. I don’t believe any of us were claiming our own views didn’t influence our “view” of this book. BUT, outside of our politics, the book’s plot, power system, world building, and descriptions are all not great and make it hard to get through. We’ve read books that aligned with our political views that had similar problems and we didn’t like those either. We are a review channel so we do judge books and how we do so is multifaceted. - Maria

    • @kingcyclops4079
      @kingcyclops4079 2 дня назад

      Based on the story’s own views it makes NO SENSE. The main character is allowed to be redeemed but he does not offer that same mercy to the villains of the story, villains who did far less evil in comparison to our protagonist. Regardless of politics, this is bad writing. It doesn’t make sense that our main character who is supposed to be regretful of his past actions are still committing them in the present, he still murders people and does so with sadistic pleasure, yet we are told that he has changed without actually seeing his growth in narrative. The most we get is that he is no longer a sexual deviant but that is only half of the crimes he committed. The book doesn’t account for the warcrimes and genocide, something he doesn’t atone for. It’s made even worse when he, who may I remind you is stated to feel guilty, believing he must “live with his guilt”, chooses to hide his sins and keep his past life a secret. Why would a character who is so ashamed of who they were that they’d jump off a cliff also refuse to confess his crimes? Doesn’t that imply he ISNT truly guilty? That he’s unwilling to truly face judgement? The entire premise on its face is hypocritical because it’s only by the end does he face judgement, judgement that he spent the entire book running from until he couldn’t anymore.

    Hm, I feel like I can immediately clock that this man is probably also an isekai and litRPG fan, he wants that LEVEL UP! gamiefied version of narrative. Also yOU GUYS WEREN'T JOKING ABOUT HOW DEEP THE SA GOES, HUH. One of my favorite redemption arcs is a currently ongoing scifi/fantasy webcomic called Broken, where a war criminal (who canonically bombed multiple peaceful countries during wartime) slowly and painfully realizes that he's on the wrong side of the war and completely defects and runs away with the magically reanimated but sentient corpse of a dead psychic teenager who has been treated as a piece of experimental weapons property (now his best friend) to go find the rebellion and.... Start fresh maybe? Except he kind of can't, really, on account of the war crimes led to the summoning??? Development??? Of The Corruption, awful eldritch abominations that REALLY want to kill his dead teenager friend again for real this time. We spend a LOT of time in his brain as he tries to understand how he can even REMOTELY try to atone for what he's done. Most of the characters he interacts with are all directly and painfully affected by the war and his actions, but you still empathize with him and see how he's desperately trying to do better, even as he continues to make mistakes because, well, he's traumatized and just like, one guy (he was genetically engineered to be the perfect soldier and favored by the dictator of his country, who proceeds to gaslight him constantly). He tries his best to support his friend, dead teenager who is also traumatized because holy shit you (his country) did unethical medical crimes to a teenager holy fuck, and his friend supports him. They are trying to figure that shit out together and they screw up sometimes but they're both trying really hard. Great comic super tough read sometimes, War Crimes and Trauma the scifi/fantasy. Also they all have pretty wings because they're fairies. GOOD STUFF. He had the realization that he was actually a villain very, very slowly, and when the comic starts is already bitter and disillusioned. But he's sort of content to suicidally throw himself into combat as punishment until he makes friends with said dead teenager, which kind of propels him to DO something about it when his friend is threatened. As the comic continues you get little flashbacks about how he sloooowly sees the horror his actions have brought. Like... bruh you can write a guy who did some terrible things and slowly drip feed them to us while still keeping him likeable if you like, write it well. This man is a bonafide war criminal and the way he's written is just.... This guy needs some intense therapy and a hug. Everyone in this webcomic needs therapy! But I don't believe Shad wants to write a good interesting story I think this man wants to talk about fantasy physics and his sexy pervert OC.

    This series is the epitome of a recent phenomenon that has been detrimental to most genres, but absolutely destroyed the standard of fantasy books published in recent years: an audience that wants to read smutty fanfic, but feel like they're smart for doing so. None of SJM or her many clones have any clue about the rich history of the fantasy genre, nor to they care to show any respect to it. And any criticism tends to be accused of pseudo-intellectualism and/or literary elitism, when the reality is that no-one has an issue with someone choosing to read fae p*rn or dragon smut, but there is a problem when it's marketed as fantasy and takes over the entire genre to the exclusion of genuinely talented writers. It's the equivalent of Bridgerton being touted as historical fiction - so-called romantasy is a subgenre of romance, not fantasy. A cursory glance at the amount of time spent on the former vs. the latter elements will tell you that. The world building is abysmal, the plots both predictable and laughably ludicrous at the same time. Sure, the relationships are painfully awful to read too with no depth of character or meaningful development, but it's clear where the effort went, even if there's no talent there to make the execution remotely competent. Seriously, go read your fanfic - it's free. Oh, but that can't go on the bragging 'I read fifty books this year. Go me!' posts. Quality, not quantity seems to be a forgotten concept. Yarros is by far the worst of these writers on a moral level. Her so-called disability rep is just gross, in every sense of the word. It's actively damaging, on a par with Sia's portrayal of autism in the catastrophe that was 'Music.' It's so bad that my cynical tinfoil hat conspiracy theories come out to play, wondering if she didn't tick enough diversity boxes so she decided to simply use the condition to exploit the admiarable drive to amplify marginalized voices as a marketing tool for her abysmally written novels. It certainly feels that way. I would implore anyone who still wants to read her work to find means of doing so that do not support her financially. No, she isn't at JKR levels of problematic, but using a debilitating condition as a selling point while dangerously misrepresenting it in the text is not something that should go unchallenged.

    I was a hardcore Catholic for 2 decades. Confession isn't supposed to work like that (to get valid absolution you have to really regret what you did and actually believe in the moment that you won't repeat your sins) , but in practice for 90% of Catholics if they even do confessions for "small stuff" - they absolutely do it mechanically. Most self-reported Catholics don't even do bare minimum like going to church every sunday and I have hard data (in my country 30% of people go to church weekly, 90+% declare they are catholics). Out of these 30% that do go to a church every sunday - most don't do confessions monthly but much less often (church is full, but less than 3 people go to confession every week). Which means if these people masturbate for example (which most people do according to stats) - they commit "deadly sins" every month when they participate in holy communion without absolution after their sins. And that's just one example. Cheating in school, pirating games, drinking before you're 18 (they made kids swear to never drink before 18 and most kids do it), premarital sex, anticonception, etc. Basically very few people treat all of that seriously even in hardcore catholic countries. Not that I mind, I just find it very hypocritical.

    It's middle grade, but I would love for y'all to read Lockwood and Co. Creepy as shit, British vibes, "retroactive narrator", all that fun stuff. I still regularly reread the entire series for my Halloween vibes and it never fails to hit.
