Such a true comment. This video was made three years after Atlanta hosted the summer Olympics. I remember that very well! I used to travel into and out of ATL a lot in the late 1990s.
Awesome video. Great shots of the TriStars on the tarmac too. Loved flying this beauty DFW-LAX in the 70's. Just bought a diecast model off ebay and thought I'd look for some videos. Thanks.

It's a great aircraft regarding flight dynamics. However, speaking from first hand experience it's bitter sweet to work on. Parts were being hard to find for it.
Despite the high profile crashes on the 10, it was still my favorite plane. Wish there were more flying for old times sake! 🥰 From what I understand, they are used to fight fires as the MD-10. And that information may be old, but I have very fond memories of the DC-10!
ahh..!!! the good ol L-10 ,,you are missed, im sorry for basicaly killing several of you. but you were old 60K + hours. you lived a good life. served thousands and kept them safe.. good job!!! (I worked at the boneyard)
I live for the L-10 but saying the 777 is nothing compared to it is blasphemy. I was on a fully loaded 777 from ATL to Orlando (MCO). They used to use 777's on that 1 hr route to give newer pilots more hours. With a full load It felt like being in a Porsche 911S Turbo at the Nurmbergring. I was pushed back into my seat so hard and we took maybe 1500 feet before rotating. That is one extremely impressive airplane with an unparalled safety record, sans the crazy Malaysian Airlines debacles a few years ago. (MH17 and MH370)
Lockheed developed the shortened fuselage L-1011 TriStar 500 as a long range, smaller capacity derivative of the TriStar 200. Launched in August 1976, the key changes incorporated in the 500 over the standard L-1011s are the 4.11m (13ft 6in) shorter fuselage, greater takeoff weights, increased fuel capacity and more powerful RB211-524 engines. The shortened fuselage reduces seating capacity to a maximum of 330, 70 less than the standard length TriStars, while the below deck galleys that had been a feature of the L-1011 family were replaced with conventional main deck units. Other improvements include enhanced wing-to-fuselage and fuselage-to-rear engine intake fairings, automatic braking and automatic thrust control. Most have three, rather than four, doors/emergency exits on each side of the fuselage. The design changes combine to give the 500 a maximum range of 11,260km (6100nm), approximately 2000km (1300nm) further than the long range 200. The TriStar 500 first flew on October 16 1978 and entered service with British Airways in May 1979. Soon after, the 500 also introduced the active aileron improvements first pioneered on the Advanced TriStar, which was the original prototype TriStar fitted with a number of advanced features intended for introduction to the TriStar production line. The Advanced TriStar incorporated increased span wings to reduce drag, with active, automatic operation of the ailerons used to cope with the increased weight and aerodynamic loads instead of strengthening the wing structure. The first 500 with active ailerons and extended wingtips flew in November 1979 and deliveries of 500s with the new wing tip extension began the following year, while in 1981 it became a standard feature. Lockheed began retrofitting the active aileron wingtip extension to all previously built TriStar 500s from 1981. Production ceased in 1983 after 50 had been built, although the last 500 was not delivered until 1985.
Two years later they were all retired. Great airplane that entered the market after the DC 10 and Lockheed never caught up. Dc/MD 10 outlasted Tristars be decades.
I took this same flight MIA to ATL on a delta L 1011 in the early 90’s . I was 12 and flying alone. They put me in first class so the FA’s could keep an eye on me. I fell in love with flying on this aircraft and as soon as I could became a pilot. Been fly ever since. Great memory 👍
More like the Rolls-Royce of airliners, and considering it used Rolls-Royce engines! Actually the engine development fiasco is what ultimately doomed the plane and led to Lockheed's premature exit from the commercial market.
Great video! Boy, miss these days. The industry was so much more colorful and interesting back then. The lines of those tri-jets were just beautiful. Cabins had decorated bulkheads. Times have changed. Thanks for preserving these great times for us!
What a great plane! I flew on the L-1011 often during the late 70s and 80s when a young executive with Procter and Gamble. Hated the job but, loved to fly which is why I hung in there long after I should have left...and always took advantage to fly on the L rather than a DC-10 and the rest. Even today, it is still the smoothest thing in the air that I had the privilege to fly.
In the same way they build modern ballparks to have an old time look, they need to come out with some new model planes that are as interesting as 727s and L1011s while having all the benefits of the latest technologies. Everything is so boring now.
+DowntownCanon yea I know. I spent my childhood in the early 70's flying on TWA's 727 and L1011 equipment between Denver and Kansas City TWA had a maintenance facility in KC and we would get to fly the big 1011's on short regional hops because sometimes you would get one either coming in for or leaving from a scheduled overhaul. Plane design now is all about economy, profit, and Lower emissions and noise...which is a good thing.
I flew a Delta L 1011 from New Orleans to Atlanta en rout home to Chicago. It was the most magnificent airliner other than the Boeing 777 that I have EVER flown. It was HUGE inside, and AMAZINGLY POWERFUL. What a flight that was. I hated getting OFF of the plane.
I wish boeing or airbus would make a trijet now, rather than the boring 2 engine layout on everything they make. The only 4 engine planes they've got are three 747, A340 and A340. The 747 and A340 are being phased out, and the A380 will probably be phased out in another 10 to 15 years, leaving only 777 and A350 stretched versions for long haul.
Thanks so much for the memories! Can't count the times I've flown on this great bird and it was always a treat-those fabulous RB211's with that startup moan and buzz saw takeoff sound! Truly my favorite airliner of the wide body airliner! Sure do miss it!

Love your video!!! Looking at those seats, woow I miss them , they were so much more comfortable that the slim and narrow crappy ones we have now. At least on most U.S. airlines

Not to mention how many seats they fill these birds up with today. Sure its for economy, to flux prices and load. And also the philosophy about birds make money in the sky, well, I won't deny that. We used to joke that DELTA stood for Doesn’t even leave the airport! Actually I always loved my flights in and out of ATL on Delta flights over the years.
I flew in these a lot.. The days of leg room and food... Now it's all greed.... If they could they would make you stand so they could jam you in like cattle.. I am glad my travel days are over..
That was quite a power takeoff out of Miami. Too bad Delta ditched the best livery it ever had, namely the one plastered all over this particular L-1011-500.
Absolutely, and compared with today when 320s and 737-800s are being used coast to coast with 29"-31" space for your legs, it was a wonderful luxury to fly from MCO to ATL in a beautiful Tri-Star
Delta's bread and butter for many years was connecting passengers from the Northeast and Midwest , funneling them into Atlanta and flying them on wide bodies into Florida for vacation. I remember flying 767's and L1011's between ATL and Tampa or Orlando whenever I flew Delta
Problems at Rolls Royce delays led to the DC- 10 beating her in the market place but the Tri - Star was a very fine aircraft once the got the engine supply logistics worked out. Her design was built around those particular engines and could not easily adapt to other engines. Her accident record seems to indicate non aircraft itself factors. The DC- 10 suffered from catastrophic rear cargo door failures till rectified.
Brings back a lot of memories. The L-1011 was the best! Still remember flying out of FLL as a hurricane was coming in. The L1011s were the only craft they were still letting take off. Bobbed around like a cork on a choppy lake all the way up Florida. That ride did not smooth out till we hit Georgia, but I was grateful it was flying me home.
Takes me back to oh, so many flights from ATL to FLL on an L1011. I remember one trip a hurricane coming in and winds blowing my rental car all over the highway as I headed to the airport, thought sure my flight would be cancelled. The only craft they were still letting take off were the L1011s, everything else was cancelled. Bobbed around like a cork on water till almost Georgia, but I got home. Many others were stuck waiting out the storm.
Its sad, all airplanes look alike now. It's like someone came up with a standard design and they just make them bigger or smaller depending on the routes.
I flew on the DC-10 and the L-1011, but both of them were great! The DC-10 was really great if you liked NOISE! As a jet fan, I liked that! The 1011 was quieter and very... felt strong, chunky even. But the DC-10 got a lot more updates and eventually the L-1011s really became old ramblers. My last L-1011 flight was on a Delta from LAX to JFK back in the mid 90's.
True. The DC10 had the backing of a company long in the passenger jet business. The L1011 was not supported by Lockheed after 1983 and parts were hard to come by and the airlines had to have a huge staff of engineers to keep them in the air after that.
I just had one problem with Delta's gates at DFW, they were miles away from the check in counters and near impossible to find. You would have to walk to the southern end of C and find your way to this little annex looking area in midfield. I think there was an underground tunnel or else a very long snaking passageway to take you from C to this annex. It may have had a letter designation like G or H gates. AA clearly didn't want DL around and they ran the joint
I have watched this video a dozen times, I just love the aircraft. Thanks for posting it Make that 13, to be on business in the 80’s and into the early 90’s was as good as it gets, DC-10’s , L-1011’s even an odd 747 on shorter routes such as MSO-DFW, MSO-ATL, OHR-JFK, PHX-LAX,. Now your choice is a 737-800 or a A320 and 28” seat pitch. UNITED had an afternoon LAX-DEN 747: AA used a 747-400 on the midnight milk run, MIA-DFW-PHX-LAX. You could count on American’s PHX-OHR or PHX-DFW flights always being .in a DC-10, Northwest was DC-10s PHX-MSP. The smallest aircraft they might downsize to was a 757 a nice aircraft itself. Who ever thought we’d end up with the ala cart mess
This was my aircraft from LAX to DFW back in the 80s & early 90s, Delta had a way of making you feel at home never lost our luggage good service, made you enjoy flying even if you were a scared to fly.
This flight did leave from Miami; it took off on 27L at MIA (notice the crossing over runway 12-30 at the beginning of the takeoff roll); then it arrives at ATL, clearly distinguished by its detached terminal buildings above-ground.
I'm sad Lockheed didn't pursue the commercial aviation market after the Tristar. This aircraft was so advanced for it's day! The Constellation's, and Electra's we're magnificent as well. Switching to a twin engine model seemed such a logical evolution of this design. Please don't get me started on Airbus...
True, but why they selected financially troubled Rolls Royce engines is beyond me. That costed them as the Tristar entered service after the DC 10 and never caught up. They should have selected, GE or Pratt and Whitney engines
I Will always remember the L-1011 for two reasons A.) Eastern Airlines did a low pass over the runway at the Daytona Beach airport in the fall of 1974 and was near the active runway as were most of my fellow students from Embry Riddle. 2.) in 1985, on an Air Canada L-1011 I was allowed to ride in the jump seat behind the captain and stayed there for nearly an hour. Much of that time was over the gulf of St. Lawrence. That's something that wouldn't happen today!
For a big guy, the L-1011 sure could handle. It was a dream to ride on. RB-211 noise and power, fast, and a smooth stable ride. It was amazing that they got the L-1011, DC-10, A300, and 767 into and out of LGA with no issues to speak of.
Whoa! I'd forgotten that Siri used to do the pre-flight safety briefings for Delta. And who in this video could've guessed how dramatically air travel (and the world) would change not even two years later.
This video is so cool! This is a piece of aviation history! I love the l1011 and was looking for a video that give you a feel of what flying in one was like also the airport and all the older jets are amazing
I lastly flew with DL 20 years ago... Now I'm toying with the idea of flying to SFO next year, how is the domestic product a like today? When I lastly flew this airline domestically they served a full menu chicken in a domestic 757-200 from CVG to SFO... Personally, somehow the very old colours and the ron allen c/s were really defining Delta of my childhood. We flew them alot in the 90s. Also the L10... I was like 10 back then. Now I'm almost 30. Wow... Time flies.
This video makes 1999 look much older than I remember it looking.
+Evan J You should have been around in 1952, the year I was born. We flew back there a few years ago and it did look very old.
Such a true comment. This video was made three years after Atlanta hosted the summer Olympics. I remember that very well! I used to travel into and out of ATL a lot in the late 1990s.
Evan J hahaha! Lol right!
I flew on an MD-80 S80 in 2010 and it looked just as old.
October 8, 2018 1:45 am
Everything looks older through a plane designed in the 1960s. What's less surprising is that Delta was still flying L-1011s in the late 90s... lol...
Uploaded 2009

That doesn't mean the year 1999 shot from a 1989 camera will look like the year 1989.:)

Plane was probably built in 79 and the the pilots and flight attendants no doubt got in some....

1986 one day after Thanksgiving I took one of these from DFW to Honolulu and it was great

Loved these planes, not one bit of turbulence ever, such a smooth and powerful ride. not like the ones now. Bring them back!
You just never have probably flown in moderate turbulence. Any airliner can experience turbulence .
Even the best and most airliners today.
The L1011 was so quiet for its time.
Great Airplane flew on TWA L1011 from Dulles to Orly in 1984 still my favorite after all these years !
That was quite a power takeoff out of Miami. Too bad Delta ditched the best livery it ever had, namely the one plastered all over this particular L-1011-500.
I loved flying the 1011! I just can't believe they would fly such a ginormous aircraft to fly such a short distance.
Because it was an older aircraft at the time, so they did not want to do any long flights or flights overseas, I'd guess.
Absolutely, and compared with today when 320s and 737-800s are being used coast to coast with 29"-31" space for your legs, it was a wonderful luxury to fly from MCO to ATL in a beautiful Tri-Star
Delta's bread and butter for many years was connecting passengers from the Northeast and Midwest ,
funneling them into Atlanta and flying them on wide bodies into Florida for vacation. I remember flying 767's and L1011's between ATL and Tampa or Orlando whenever I flew Delta
AMEN TO THAT I MISS THE OLD BIRD MY SELF
Chris Noe the route was always full this the reason why they use the l1011
Cool video, i like the old delta colors. And the classic airliners.
I enjoyed watching this incredible 🤩 miss the good old days 👍
You gotta get up damn early if you want to beat the L-1011! Simply the best!
My favorite plane.
Yes just how I remember it colorful seats. Pre 9/11 when life as we knew would change it forever.
It's like someone came up with a standard design and they just make them bigger or smaller depending on the routes.
why is it always the other airlines/contries buyin big planes n usa n canada fly small planes
Lockheed was an excellent aircraft builder with a great safety record.
Tristar and the three holers.
Back when you had to fly sideways a few years before upgrading.
Great sounds of those RB 211s groaning.
L1011 is my all time favorite . I loved flying in this as a kid .
That sound and feel on takeoff… great memories flying between FLL and ATL 1995-1999❤
Back when things were simpler. Before a single day changed everything.
I think im born in the wrong era, I love the tristars and lots of old aircraft all though I was born in 2006
I missed all of the good jets in the first 10 years of my life! Oh this pissed me off!
Love the Tri Star... Special plane.. thanks for this
Wonderful memories. I flew Delta from FLL to SFO and back Via DFW in 1988. All the legs were on the L1011 and I got meals on both legs.
Loved how they announced gates back in the day. So fascinating to see where everyone was going
Flew on many of these birds, DL, EA and my fave at the time TWA.

Delta is not just an ordinary airline it’s the most popular in The US
I wish Lockheed Martin still makes commercial planes
The L-1011 was a beast! I loved the way it rumbled down the runway and llifted into the sky. It was my favorite airplane!
Loving that sharp left turn around the 5:20'ish mark!!!
Was a very beautiful airplane,insure miss the L 1011.
This was my aircraft from LAX to DFW back in the 80s & early 90s, Delta had a way of making you feel at home never lost our luggage good service, made you enjoy flying even if you were a scared to fly.
Great Post! Thank you! The L1011 was my favorite plane....
Boeing should collaborate with Lockheed Martin to make a L-1011ADV (Advanced)
This flight did leave from Miami; it took off on 27L at MIA (notice the crossing over runway 12-30 at the beginning of the takeoff roll); then it arrives at ATL, clearly distinguished by its detached terminal buildings above-ground.
That last Delta TriStar really needs a bath!
Ahh the old days, weren’t they swell 👍
Thanks SDMullis for your fantastic videos man. I love hearing the infamous RB211 start up sounds at the end
I Will always remember the L-1011 for two reasons
A.) Eastern Airlines did a low pass over the runway at the Daytona Beach airport in the fall of 1974 and was near the active runway as were most of my fellow students from Embry Riddle.
2.) in 1985, on an Air Canada L-1011 I was allowed to ride in the jump seat behind the captain and stayed there for nearly an hour. Much of that time was over the gulf of St. Lawrence. That's something that wouldn't happen today!
Love the sound of those RR's
I flew that route as well in 1999 on a Delta L 1011. I think every plane in Delta's Fleet flies that route even today
what a beautyfull video , i can t stop watching it
For a big guy, the L-1011 sure could handle.
9 abreast, 5 in the middle, wow they definitely squeezed in an extra seat compared to the original configuration.
Oh how I miss the 90’s. It was the best decade ever. I remember flying on empty airplanes and having the entire row for myself to sleep in.
1976 to about 1990 for me. Best era. I can go on and on why I feel that way. I was 17 in 1980. My whole life opened up then.
This video is so cool! This is a piece of aviation history! I love the l1011 and was looking for a video that give you a feel of what flying in one was like also the airport and all the older jets are amazing
The “Cell phones” in those days (1999) I assume we’re the Motorola Startac. Could those be powered off?
I lastly flew with DL 20 years ago... Now I'm toying with the idea of flying to SFO next year, how is the domestic product a like today? When I lastly flew this airline domestically they served a full menu chicken in a domestic 757-200 from CVG to SFO... Personally, somehow the very old colours and the ron allen c/s were really defining Delta of my childhood. We flew them alot in the 90s. Also the L10... I was like 10 back then. Now I'm almost 30. Wow... Time flies.
