Skies of Arcadia - Part 7 - The Crystal Maze
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 май 2024
- Skies of Arcadia continues, as we make a new friend in Maramba, and finally reach the ancient temple that holds the first Moon Crystal, but it turns out that not everything is quite as it seems...
Skies of Arcadia is tragically completely unavailable to purchase on any currently existing store, and was also never released on PC. If you want to play it yourself, your options are the GameCube and Dreamcast versions, which were the only releases. Sorry.

"I think she likes me."
Thinking the stripper likes you is the #1 sign that you have had too much to drink and need to go home now.
I am convinced Drachma is a cat. He wants in the party...
Then out...
Then in...
Then out...
When he starts sleeping on the keyboard, it will be confirmed without doubt.
He also shakes it all about, he does the okie kokie and turns around too.
It is what he is all about.
he also has the most spectacular set of whiskers
Trying to hunt giant tuna on the sky
Vyse: She’s just such a good dancer . . .
Bellena: *jankily her arms*
Aika: . . . .
Vyse: What! She’s limited by GameCube graphics!
Gamecube was the remaster. Imagine it on Dreamcast haha
Did I see the betrayal coming? yes the moment she asked to see it. Did I know who it was? No that was a surprise.
Maybe I'm just a cynical old gamer, but I saw her betrayal coming right from the start. But also had no idea who she was. It is just such a staple of RPGs that someone who seems helpful will betray you in short order that it was an obvious setup to me, I guess.
@@Drenmar As far as I have played the game, this game has plenty of RPG tropes going on, that's part of the charm I think (and being a rather early RPG game too)
I did not see it coming at all lmao
But, to be honest, it's as obvious as can be if you take the story seriously, which I hadn't done until now. Those guys have arguably the most important person in the whole world, Fina, with them. She was kidnapped at the beginning and was only freed like two in-game days ago. Valua also knew that Fina would never willingly lead them to the moon crystals, so their decision to infiltrate the group or follow them undercover is absolutely logical. It's just hard to take a game with this theme, this appearance, and overall mystical components seriously enough to consider what Valua will do next.
@@user-il9ed4nq1d Yea, for sure the game has some anime logic in the story telling but still keeps it surprising
I didn't see it coming. I forgot about Belleza almost immediately.
Rotating that N ninety degrees is some real Clark Kent taking off the glasses energy. I've always loved it.
It's like setting the M for "mini" to W for "wumbo"
I have been loving the sheer amount of joy that you can feel radiating from Jon with every episode of this series. I'm hoping he 100%'s this game so that we can see it go into triple digits episodes.
As someone who bought it on international release, I feel Jon's love. It's genuinely one of the best games I've played to this day.
@katieheys3007 I, on the other hand, have never heard of this game, however I've been loving this series so far.
My friend who had the GameCube only had Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes and SSX. Looking back at the GC library, it seems we missed out A LOT of gems like this game right here.
this series is only a few episodes in and it's already my favourite he's done
he's so pleased and happy it's great!
What? This game has a 100+ hours of potential content? I expected this to end at maybe part 20-30.
I'm in the middle of the road. I figured Bellima would betray us, but I figured she was just going to, like, steal the crystal and sell it to the Valuans for cash or something. I wasn't expecting her to be a fucking admiral.
Same. It had been a couple of weeks since I'd seen the episode that the admirals were introduced, so I'd forgotten their names by the time 'Bellena' showed up. Figured she was just a freelance rogue that was going to backstab you.
Haven't had a very good day and an (almost) hour long (or any length really) video from you is the best way to end it. Thanks for making this day better.
Well hopefully you feel better soon :)
@@ManyATrueNerd Thank you :)
I hope tomorrow is better. ❤
I hope today is a better day
I hope today is much brighter for you. ❤️
God, I love the way Aika's face is animated whenever Vyse hits on Bellena
I love how when Bellena is telling her tragic backstory, Vyse and Fina are heartbroken while Aika is still fuming.
Belleza just turned the z on its side lol
Yes😂 did it fool you?
It fooled me when I was a kid.
I call BS on Drachma not being sexy.
seconded!! he's a handsome bear and/or DILF.
@@NoReplyAsset 100% Bellina is totally into him
I mean, at least Belleza takes steps to hide her identity. She changes her hairstyle, (I assume) applies makeup to change her skin tone and wears a revealing outfit completely unlike her admiral's uniform. Plus Vyse at this point knows of exactly two Valuan admirals: Alfonso and Galcian. He doesn't know who Belleza is, let alone her name, so why would he assume Bellena is a Valuan Admiral?
Also, I always missed that second effect of Epsilon Mirror. 'Course I always grinded enough money that I could carry 99 MP-restoring items at all times so what do I know?
52:50 if Jon is upset about Gigas being both the singular and the plural, just wait untill he hears about sheep, or moose
I believe gigas is singular as well.. plural being gigantes
Or Pokemon
You leave my sheeps alone! Lol
@katieheys3007 so no trading wood for them?
I'm surprised it annoys him since Gigas is singular in Greek for giant, and Gigantes is the plural.
Skies of Arcadia is amazing, and that lazy beam is literally a reference to a ghibli movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
Like seriously, the dead giant with massive nuke beam is just amazing. Who made Skies of Arcadia, who is holding the right to it? WHY ISN'T IT BEING REMASTERED???!!!!
If you google it, there's been rumors from 2023 about a remaster being in the works, so it might be sooner than you think
@@TheLazyFinn If this game is on PC, I am getting it.
@@jackvalior I fear it's going to be switch only, but one can hope! Emulating the old one is easy though
The story is also very, very Laputa. That sound effect for the beam sounds almost the same as the robots from that movie too.
It does look fantastic, can't believe I missed it first time around. I have a Gamecube. Might see if I can find a cartridge...
@@iain_nakada Good luck, those will cost an absurd amount of money these days
Curse her sudden but inevitable betrayal!
Just what I was thinking. 😆
Definitely didn't see it coming! I had assumed Bellena would be recruited after the dungeon! Loving this series so far! Always a delight when you love something so much; it comes through in the videos and makes them even better!
I knew Bellena was too good to be true, but i would never in a million years have thought she was a damn admiral. I figured ahe was a bounty hunter or assassin.
Aika has some great faces hahaha
This series is so fun - your affection for the game is palpable and it's reminding me of watching friends play games they loved when I was a kid! I didn't quite cotton on to Bellena/Belleza being the same person but I did hear 'I'm in love with someone who ignores me' and go 'oh I know this anime trope, that's standard BBEG's right-hand woman motivation right there' and 'not in this outfit' and translate THAT to 'in armor I could probably take the whole party :)' and then she said 'can I see the crystal' and it was like 'ah here comes the heel turn' so I'm oblivious but also moderately genre-savvy I guess? lol
When you do a walk through of an older RPG that you love is my favorite content.
Jon HAS GOT TO do a full Valkyria Chronicles playthrough, esp the first one. It's basically what happens when Skies of Arcadia and XCOM have a baby.
You get the fantastically charming sci-fantasy-medieval design direction of the Skies of Arcadia crew, fancy schmancy comical evil empire, awkward thick as bricks protagonist and his more mature babysitting lady friend, corny foot-in-mouth dialogue, surprisingly tragic real world themes, but as a turn based strategy game. Did I mention the tank development menu is a RE4 briefcase? Oh, and Vyse, Fina and Aika are in the game, and Largo is basically Drachma. It's such a Jon game.
Love this series.
Reminds me how older games had more charm and that childlike wonder to them.
Up, up, up the ziggurat, lickety-split!
This video put a smile on my face, Jon enjoying a delightful old rpg is just so fun.
Oh and apparently that Epsilon Mirror protects Aika from basically everything.
I didn't see Belleza coming either!
I think Gigas is both singular and plural, like sheep.
The perfect way to wind down for the day
Saw that coming a mile away, she mentions escaping the valuan fortress which realistically no-one should have heard of since they would want to keep it quiet. Then when she mentions being in love with someone who paid her no attention it was a clear flag.
Actually in the last episode at about 15 minutes in he meets up with Domingo on sailors' island who says everyone is talking about how they escaped the Grand Fortress. So the word is definitely out. I'm not sure how exactly but Valua does do a lot of trade with other nations and they couldn't just silence all of them without reprisal.
@@Streptovarius Really? I must have not been paying that much attention. I suppose it was more about how no-one had mentioned it in the tavern but she came right out and said it.
I wasn't really paying much attention to the introduction of the admirals (and she was definitely the least interesting in the room at the time), so I didn't notice who Bellena was because I didn't notice who Belleza was. Plus she was introduced in part 4 of this series which was a couple weeks ago, so there's that.
I'm also just not good with names.
And while I'm here, Gigas is Greek for giant, and it is singular. The plural form is Gigantes.
Yeah the only clue given is the generals being introduced and them talking about her being an expert in espionage.
I love secret passages obscured purely by the positioning of the camera. It reminds me of the first puzzle in The Labyrinth where the girl is going down a seemingly endless corridor with no openings till a catepillar points out the optical illusion.
Wait, so the temple was also the large mecha Gigas too?! Alright that's awesome as hell. Seems like possibly BotW might have taken a page out of SoA's book with that concept. It's a bit reversed in the order of fighting it then doing the dungeon but yeah still a dungeon/boss in practice. Although maybe its been done somewhere else before this too, in which case it's a pretty cool concept in general whether these other games are pay homage intentionally or not. I wonder if the other temples are also the Gigas.
Omg and Drachma comes back again! Lol, at this point we might as well place bets on the total amount of times he joins and leaves the party by the end of the game. What are we up to now? Five times he's joined and four times he's left? Him abandoning us but then also coming back to save us just when we need him is going to foster some kind of dependency issues with these kids when they grow up. /j
Haha without spoilers there's a lot of leaving and rejoining in this game :D
@@katieheys3007 So far it´s been quite fun and enjoyable (maybe because I´m not the one playing), but gods! do these things frustrate me in games.
I don´t want to sound too salty, there are ways to write it well. But in general, I´m not a fan. Once you´re in my party, the only way to leave is death. (And then you get rezzed anyway. No escape.)
@@johnyshadow If this frustrates you, you are going to have FUN once Jon gets to the point where I'm currently in the story lmao
@@katieheys3007yeah I suspect him leaving at least another 4 or 5 times before the end.
@@johnyshadowremind me to never join your party lol. Talking like Davy Jones over here.
3rd request in asking Jon to do a minimum of a 2 hour review of the Star Wars holiday special
The Belleza reveal caught me by surprise too, I can't be expected to remember everyone's face and name from a cutscene a couple hours ago!
edit: Giga is dumb though, c'mon. Gigas works fine as singular and plural. Same as Tuna, or Moose!
The moons did it
I thought the plural of moose was meese
@manyatruenerd It wasn't just you. I was totally fooled also.
when the dancer at the bar wants to be best friends with the random stranger who walks into town no questions asked, they want something else. I didn't even remember Belleza was a thing and I saw this coming a mile away. but i've also consumed an unhealthy amount of anime so lets call that narrative experience
I fall for the twist the first time too, it's just so great.
Anyway, when Bellena was introduced in the video my weird brain immediatly found the 20 years old information and screamed "that's the scummy admiral, you fool!".
Epsilon Mirror makes Aika completely invulnerable for the turn. That's what the crystal skin represents.
This series is quickly becoming my favorite of the whole channel
I saw the twist as soon as she asked to hold it. So yes, I was very surprised
I’ve never heard of this game before this series but I’m loving it so far! love all your videos, Jon! 🩵🫶
This is quickly becoming my new favorite series on this channel! And no, I didn't see Belleza reveal coming.
I also did not see the reveal coming. Once she asked to see it I did know instantly she'd be on the Valuan side, but I did not realize it before that either.
I certainly didn't see it coming, but then my observation skills are on par with Jons
I saw the betrayal coming as soon as Bellena said she was interested in sky pirates who could evade the valuen empire. That said, I didn't expect she was Belleza (mainly because I forgot about Belleza)
Usually I will agree with Jon but I just can't say it would be weird for a young pirate to zoom in on a scantily clad dancer performing on a stage.
I just want to say one thing about Bellena: BOOB PHYSICS!
Pushing the poor GameCube to its limit
Wait, really? * zooms in *
That laser looks similar to the laser from Nausicaa. It's great in the movie and it's nice to see it here again.
I actually didn't see the twist coming! I expected some shady stuff, but not from Bellena herself
Gigas is singular. the plural of Gigas is Gigantes.
I only got vibes of the betrayal when we got back and saw Bellena standing outside the temple waiting for us, which caused a cutscene. I only expected the betrayal when she asked to see it. However Bellena being Belleza was completely unexpected. Also Gigas plural being Gigas makes sence to me since it also colud be using the guy-gas type pronunciation, and just some words don't follow the s plural rule.
Fell for that disquise too. Biggest plot twist so far😅
Jon, did you know that Vyse, Aika and Fina all have cameo appearances in Valkyria Chronicles on the PlayStation 3?
I remember seeing them in Valkyria and thinking WTF?!
Of course in every possible party after that.
He said as much in the first episode.
I saw it coming as soon as your read her line about the moon crystal being more beautiful than she imagined.
Ah, yes. The old trope. Drachma ex Machina.
I really just have to comment here during one of the fight scenes that the score for this game is neigh-on unmatched.
I've been enjoying this series - I played this game as a kid but only really got as far as the prologue so it's fun to see more
14:15 It DOES work like that, assuming by temperature difference they mean the air below was hotter than the air above. Though you would need MUCH larger force for it to work, but the hot air cause the island to rise as hot air with larger pressure move to cooler air with lower pressure, until it equal out with the low pressure that resulted from hot air rising (think of air as water, if too much move elsewhere before it is filled up, it leaves a vacuum of lower pressure, causing a disruption that prevent it from keep going up). As the air cool, it stops rising, creating a delicate balance that is temperature dependence.
I'm pretty sure the island need to be made of moonstone to be light enough to move like that, and there must not be a lot of winds or winds direction are in perfect balance for the island to not drift, but yea, mechanically, it WORKS.
Edit: It DOES drift, so yea, it works perfectly
Silly! You're using science and evidence when we all know the moons did it
Gigas isn't a plural of Giga though. It's its own word, I believe it just means "Giant" in Latin or Greek. I've always pronounced it "guy-gus" or "gee-gus". I think you mentioned on the PodCats that you play pokemon, so Gigas is where the later half of Regigigas comes from.
You can tell when a magic box breaks by the animation.
I saw it coming as soon as she asked to see the moon crystal. I was a bit suspicious of her but not that she was Belleza.
I totally forgot about Belleza but that’s par for the course for me.
i didn't see it coming until she asked to see the crystal
This is such a weird unexplained twist. Belleza changed her own race somehow. I guess it was magic. I can't really imagine there being any foreshadowing despite the similarity in the name
In the introductions of the generals, she an espionage specialist.
I love this game so much and seeing someone else play it who loves it and knows it like I do is really wonderful ;A; Thank you!
Although these sadly aren't getting the mega views they deserve, I must say that I'm really enjoying them.
Yes it's nostalgia but it's still a really fun game!
So the Loopers are like Cactuars from Final Fantasy. Massive evasion stats, high chance of running away, but extremely worth defeating.
Oof I remember that fire temple, spent more time that I should've in there
Why is Dr Robotnik manning the bar!
I think Gigas is a singular word, derived from "Giant" in I think ancient Greek? It's been a while. Not sure if the plural of Gigas is also Gigas, but the singular is accurate as far as I'm aware. Want to say it was Gigantes or something along those lines?
I've played this game before a long time ago and I STILL forgot that plot twist.
I didn't see that coming, but I was actually thinking it'd be pretty cool to make a videogame where the "prologue" is 4 easy dungeons, and you decide at the end if you're helping the princess or the "evil" people who had captured her,, have 2 plotlines both explaining how the other path is the bad guys ;/ :)
Love this game. Love this series Jon! Thank you!
No worries, Jon! I also completely forgot about the admirals of Valua as well 😂
I was also surprised by the Belleza reveal!
Man I remember encountering Zivilyn Bane and at first not realizing he was some boss due to the music...... To almost my own peril. :D
Yeah definitely didn't see that coming some how. Don't feel bad!
John, is there any chance you can raise the brightness of the game especially when in dungeons, really struggling to watch! Not sure if anyone else is having this issue! Love the content, never heard of this game before, keep it coming!
Love the series 😂❤
I saw Bellena either betraying the party or becoming a party member. Or both. I blame my recent playthrough of FFIV, where one party member is basically betraying the party every five bloody minutes. XD
I didnt forsee specifically that Bellina would be Belleza but I did call that Bellina would betray us.
I did not see the reveal coming, you're in good company! But erm, I have forgotten most of the names of the other admirals by now anyway!
I will say, for the sake of Jon not being foolish this time
I only sort of saw it coming, waffling back and forth on it as things went on, but I also completely forgot Belleza's name. There were eight people in a room and it just sort of listed their names, I can't remember that! I'll remember her now I guess but I have a feeling she won't come up much again...
Isn't Gigas the Ancient Greek singular of Gigantes, or the Giants? Shouldn't Jon get pissy about Gigas being used as a plural?
I did see it coming that she was a spy. But I also forgot about Belleza.
I know many folks that blame the moon for a lot of their problems. Mercury in retrograde with the moon's placement seems to be especially important.
Drachma needs to decide if he’s in or out for this quest
Would love an IRL video of you playing a real pinball machine.
I did not see it coming. I did think it was strange that she didn't join the party.
I did not see the belleza either Jon, you are not alone :D
I have a love hate relationship with Lambda Burst. I love it because it's an amazing move, but once I was able to start each fight with 8 sp, I hated it because it ended nearly all random battles for the remainder of the game. Made it way too stale, and it's not like I WASN'T going to use it!
And yeah it's also worth mentioning that I did not see that coming either
I also didn't see the Belleza reveal coming, though I do have ADHD and can never remember names of real people so a side character from a cutscene would've had to have been incredibly memorable xD
Do very much enjoy the Crystales animation
I actually was fooled by bellina also. And I felt so silly about it a laughed for like 5 min before I could pick up the controller again.
I was indeed fooled right up until the moment that the moon crystal was asked to be handed over, then I knew there was something fishy going on :P
Also, I want to believe that Bellina is into Drachma 👀
Ryse, man of Roam.
Bravo!
I love this "FF7-but-not-really" game!
I didn't remember the admiral's name, but I was sure bellena was bad news.
I didn't see that twist coming but then I'm not playing so I barely remember half of the people in the game.
Jon, isn't Gigas literally the singular in Greek, the plural being Gigantes?
It wouldn't be sincere but I'll say that I didn't see the twist coming if it makes you feel better, Jon.
