    We went from a 22FB Sport to a 30RB Flying Cloud. I agree with most of what you presented. We have always lived by “the rule of 7 P’s” so trips have been no real problem. My wife loves to boast that I am “Engineer Mr Fix-it” and I have easily kept maintenance and preventative maintenance all squared away. One thing you can mention on your next presentation is: just go slow when you tow. My tow speed never gets above 65mph. Usually hovers between 60 and 65. Reduces high-frequency vibration and problems to both trailer and tow vehicle, helps fuel mileage and reduces overall stress. Plus, when we tow, we usually don’t tow for more than 4 hours before we set up at a campsite.
    Well done y’all!

    This is helpful advice for anyone just entering the RV world - not just folks with Airstreams. We have a 37’ Class A motorhome and most of what is talked about in this video applies equally to our situation, except that expenses are probably even greater for an A-class diesel pusher than for a towable.

    • @Wanderlocal
      @Wanderlocal  Год назад

      Vlunceford, that makes perfect sense! If we were going to trade our Airstream out for anything it would probably be an A-class diesel pusher. It's the maintenance that makes us the most nervous about it though!

Since we're still living in the day of C*vid, we didn't want to bother the owners with a tour - but we are pretty darn curious to see one from the inside. We've seen photos, but I have a feeling that's not doing it justice. Oh, and good catch on the warranty. You are 100% correct. It is a 3-year warranty. 🙌 L+D

    If you want to reduce the cost of tolls. Purchase a Illinois I-Pass (50% off IL toll cost) which also belongs to the E-Z Pass consortium. So it works in 18 plus other states. Or purchase the Florida Sun Pro. It also works in most states that have toll roads.

    If you don’t have one, install a rear camera. It’s really helpful for backing the trailer into a space. I have a Thousand Trails membership which is really helpful when booking RV parks. I book them 90 days in advance. I have a home park that I can stay in for three weeks then I have to be out one week but I can stay in the system. There is no nightly fee. There is a small monthly dues payment which is much less than paying nightly or monthly fees. I currently have a Lance travel trailer and I’m considering a new Airstream!

    • @Wanderlocal
      @Wanderlocal  Год назад

      Mark, did you decide to stick with your trailer or go with an Airstream? Our Airstream came with a rear camera, but we're thinking about replacing it with the one that connects to the Garmin RV GPS simply because it would simplify our system on our truck windshield. Right now we've got the Garmin GPS, our tire pressure indicator, and then the backup camera screen. It's a lot. 🤯 We've looked into the Thousand Trails membership a little bit since we shot this video but still haven't pulled the trigger on it. 🤷‍♀

    Always buy used whenever possible! If I have to explain this, you wouldn't understand. If you buy new, than post purchase support should be a number one factor. Sales will most always be customer service oriented but service is what is going to be important. There are quite a few service departments out there that do shoddy work on your AS. Not to mention having to wait 6-weeks or more just to get in. Think small! YOU LIVE OUTSIDE YOUR RV, NOT IN IT! Regardless if you're a full timer or not. I spend Winter and Spring on the road in my 16 Caravel. Perfect. No need for a bigger AS as mine has everything the big guys have except the extra room, which I nor my passengers need. Who cares. Plus, there is no place I cannot take my 16 footer. Even park, fitting perfectly into two adjoining parking spaces such as those in a grocery store parking lot. Easy to get in and out of gas stations, tight spots, great camping spots, etc. etc. I'm in a spot right now that limits the length of RV's not only in the NF campground, but the twisty road getting here. Absolutely beautiful spots out there where you are not going to get the 25 footer or beyond RV.

    Excellent list. Just to avoid the left/right issue in cars. Q - "Do I turn left?" A - "Right" Q - "So I turn right?" A - "No, I meant 'correct, you turn left!" I got my family in the habit of starboard and port. Since Airstreams designs have been compared to aircraft it is an appropriate way to communicate with each other while one is backing up. Port is always the Airstream's left, not yours. Left and port are 4 letters long while right and starboard are longer; if that helps you remember.

It seems as though I go through batteries like crazy and even the battery in my truck seems to be affected, like its draining. I've checked all the fuses and connections and they seem fine. I even have two Honda Generators that I take with me and run them while I'm stationary. My question is, How's the battery life on an Airstream with all that's going on?

    I will never understand why someone wants to buy an Airstream when there are better trailers for less money. And yes, a 3/4 ton truck is safer for towing, but we've been pulling a 28 foot 10,400 lbs. Wet trailer with our V-6 F-150 (which is not the desert racing designed Raptor) for over 10 years in the Pacific Northwest. This area isn't flat, and we haven't had any problems with the capacity. I recently pulled the (very) fully loaded trailer from Tacoma, over the Cascades, across the Columbia basin, and on to spokane, and I kid you not, I had over 18 mpg average in our 2014 F-150 super crew 4x4 with 6.5' bed (box). Check your options when buying your trailer.

    We're on our 3rd Airstream. This is like buying a diamond every few years. I wouldn't buy ANY other travel trailer in the USA. Oh yeah, on the awning miscapade, been there done that. One time only! We had to basically dissamble the awning and the arms and then slide what was left of the awning out of its channel. We took many many pics and the insurance company totally covered it all minus the 250 deductible. Never do that again. The wind and awning do not mix!!

      😂This comment had me (Daniel) laughing out loud. So much so that Lauren asked me what I was reading - which I quickly filled her in on! It took me a while to understand all of her southernisms when we first started dating.
      She was referring to the Alde radiant heating system. It's an easy thing to do and realistically only takes 10 minutes or so. Once a week I empty the hot water tank then turn it back on to restore the air cushion. It's a preventative measure to reduce any incidence of a leak. Besides that, I also torque the lug nuts every 500 miles or so on the Airstream, give some of the moving parts a few squirts of lubricant or grease, and check all of my fluid levels. After that, most of the maintenance is quarterly. :)

And, you really can't go wrong with a Flying Cloud.

We called the dealer back and begged him to let us bring it back and get our fifth wheel. It cost us $2500 for the experience but we felt so closed in without the slide-outs and the headroom and the outside storage. Buying a used 2015 25' Flying Cloud we saved about 40K. It also came with everything we needed like the load distribution hitch, chocks. All I had to do was change out the interior lights because they were annoying blue light LED. If people have taken good care of their air stream it shows. All the problems coming out from the factory should be shaken out by the previous owner. We shopped for our Airtstream for about 2 months mostly to understand what we wanted. This was just after COVID broke out. We discovered they have a twin bed option which is very cool because the back bedroom can be like another lounge and gives a lot more space to move around. We lived in Oregon and were prepared to drive up to a day away. We located one in Washington, called the guy and showed up the same day and took it home. I'd say a 25ft is perfect for my wife and I. If we had a one or two little kids maybe but more than that you would be crammed. Airstreams are smaller but like I said it perfect for my wife and I and we love it. It puts a smile on your face when towing it down the road. It handles very well because of it's low center of gravity and aerodynamics. We tow it with a 6.7 Powerstroke and it's a joy passing large oversized kite sail trailers & Motor homes, Or climbing a mountain hardly lowering speed. We are like excuse us we are just passing through. I'm not a boastful person it's just what it is, it's fun.
