My folks bought an RV in 2000. They lived on the road visiting every state and all National Parks for 2 & 1/2 yrs. At the time, I thought they were crazy, but for yrs now, I realized I was wrong. Filled with beauty and freedom! Would be great to do! Cheers guys 💗
5.891 $ on gas. The average price was 2,90$/gallon. -> 2.031 gallons in total. The trip was 13.154 miles. So that brings us to around 6.5mpg. Thats way less than 11-12 mpg.
I'm not a "bot" and I was impressed with your video regardless of the accuracy. You kept track of a lot of expenses over a considerable time, sold for more than original cost, etc. Sounds like it was a good investment let alone a lot of fun. Enjoyed watching the two of you, you're a pleasant couple to watch! Keep up the good work.
Great video; I'm not a nit picker. I love all the shots of your Airstream gives me a idea of what ours looks like going down the road. We use ours mostly to go to different ren faires. This year will be longest we've stayed in our 22' Airstream Safari which will be late summer, & that will be 5 days in a row. I'm glad to see the both of you made the most of your time with your 22' Bambi. Thanks again for a great video.
Last summer, I travelled to Yellowknife round trip from Toronto ON, about 10,000KM totally in one month, cost about 3000US$ for gas! Only stayed in RV Park in 8days. Cost about 500$ for camping grounds fee. I drove a BMW X5 SUS to tow a 17F NoBo travel trailer.
MY WIFE AND I RETIRED IN 2013. MADE THE LEAP FULLTIME RVING JUNE 1 2022. ONCE WE GET ALL THE CURSORY VISITS TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY ACROSS AMERICA DONE OUR PLAN TO BOONDOCK 3 WEEKS/MONTH WILL HAPPEN. AS SOON AS WE ANNOUNCED OUR PLAN EVERYBODY WANTED A VISIT.
Very interesting video. You gave some good advice and pointed out a few things to watch out for. But I would warn anyone watching this video that your total costs are irrelevant to anyone today. Even if your trip is only a year ago due to inflation it may as well be a decade ago. With today's price for trailers, trucks, gas and food the total is basically doubled. Your timing was incredible. You are very lucky!
Looks as if you were fortunate regarding repairs . We did 45 000 KM x canada and back via the USA. Needed to replace bearings, springs, and truck services, including tire replacements . There were other more minor repairs, but they do add up. These should be budgeted for.
Considering gas prices when you did your travels, you would have spent close to $12,000 for the same amount of gas for the trip today! But for a once in a lifetime trip, why not, right?
You were very lucky to have stayed under 22k net cost. You bought and sold at the right time and traveled during the peak of the pandemic when gas was cheaper. Plus you were able to perform your own upgrades. Today it would probably cost 50% more. Great use of resources!
We didn’t include food because that should be similar to your food costs if you lived at home since we cooked most of our meals. For sure seeing and membership, we had AAA RV service which I believe was $100 for a year, and the national parks pass annual membership was $60-80. Other than that there were a few extra charges here and there. So if you wanted the extra fees included I’d add $500 to me safe.
Really interesting - I don’t think I’d clocked that you sold your caravan for so much more than you bought it - great investment! 12/13mpg!!! Did you have to have your own fuel tanker following you? 😜
Well, I'm glad you recognized how lucky you got, selling a depreciating asset for MORE. Also interesting that you only did this for one year and sold everything to recoup expenses... I would have thought if you enjoyed it, you would have kept it for future trips. For someone who wants to live full time in a camper and not sell the stuff after one year, do you think it is fair to say that If you didn't sell the camper and truck and assuming the cost of the truck and RV would be spread across 7 years, that would have added another $10k/year to the cost?
We just leave it wherever it’s parked. But if we need to store it somewhere for a week or so we’ve used the app Neighbor. You can rent parking spots for your RV by the day.
Like your video. In about 2 yrs. I will be buying an rv to hitch to my truck and hit the road. My choices after u tubing over dose. 1. Airstream. 2. Forest river. 3. Winnebago. Any suggestions. I m is airstream is the Mercedes’ of the pack.
help me on the math here...13,154 miles. Truck is getting 11-12 miles to gallon, so say 11.5. 13,154/11.5= 1144 gallons. At $2.90 a gallon, total gas cost should have been around $3318? You're saying $5891 is the total gas? Think there is some Common Core math in there. :)
You’re not wrong with that math 😀. I think I estimated our total miles based on google maps and got our gas costs based on receipts. So it’s likely we actually drove more. I’m guessing the extra miles were all the day trips we took when we didn’t have the trailer hooked up. 👍👍
Here is a useful tip. If you can't find a dump station, pull over on the side of the highway and open the black water tank. When you drive by the same area in about a year, the grass and vegetation in the area will be a little greener. Come on now, who hasn't done this? Doesn't the bear shit in the woods?

It's not that much but, there is a lot that goes into maintenance and repairs. There is also the issue with space availability. There is not enough camp grounds for all the campers. The people who want to live on the road, travel and see the country combined with the fair weather campers, those who depend on RV life to live have a very difficult time finding available spaces at RV camping lots.

Great video! Wish you guys still had the Airstream for more content, but vanlife videos would be cool too! Keep it up!
I think your math was off. $5000 a year for camp grounds / 365 days is around $14 a day, not $1.40.
whoops... that's embarrassing
I don't know how I did that. 🤦♂️
365 x 1.40 = 511
I caught that too. Oops!
And something about the math for gas and miles also doesn't make a ton of sense.
Love the mutual respect 💪 ❤

> it's twice as much as my cost of living in my studio apartment
Nice trailer!
Such a good investment...

You’re right! 😲 We were SHOCKED when reviewing the gas prices during our trip. Basically half of what it is today. 👍👍
good stuff. will be leaning towards 20footer

Dude… we use just about 13000 miles each year to commute to work and back home lol
Where do you drop your trailer if you need to go to a doctors appointment?
We just leave it wherever it’s parked. But if we need to store it somewhere for a week or so we’ve used the app Neighbor. You can rent parking spots for your RV by the day.

$5000 camping cost is $1.40 per day? That's some fascinating mathematics you've got going on there...
Whoops.. made a mistake.
You missed the Upper peninsula of Michigan lol.
Great video. You have a new career to consider.

How's the transition from trailer to vanlife?
It's different. We haven't committed fully yet. There are still a few upgrades we need to install before hitting the road in the van.
My guess was 12,400 miles. You earned a like. :-) well done video.
Thank you :)
Not kidding, that was my exact same guess. Great minds..

How does $5000 equal $1.40 a day? 5000 divided by 365 days = $13.70
Wow I guessed 13k!!!

So wild. What you spent in a year of traveling is what I paid in rent! 😒I'd say yours was money well spent.
Damn, I guessed 12,000 miles
Very close!
46,709 miles
Math is off a decimal point...$1.40/day is $500/yr not $5,000. So $10.40/day.
How does a total camping cost of 5000.00 dollars average to 1.40 a day? 1.40*365 = 511.00? Did I miss something?
Yep. We made a mistake.. whoops 😬
@@Roamaroo decimal point huh?
@@ofontela Sadly.. 🤦♂
even at $14/day its still REALLY cheap to live :)
$5000 a year for camping is not $1.40,per day
Embarrassing.. I'm not sure how we made that mistake. 🤦♂
