Would love to see a breakdown of the cost of all the components and a total cost for the system. Trying to get an idea of what it really takes to go off grid. Several of the channel we watch have done it, but no one talks about cost and ROI.

You can do it yourself and scale as you go. But you learn to conserve and alter the time you turn on and off heavy loads
Jesse Muller is a different type of homesteader but he does show some very good cost and load data on his system he is not just a solar guy so you kind of have to watch some fairly long videos

Just because I was frugal, I used to turn off the dishwasher when it had drained for the last time, dishes still hot from the hot water so they air dry just fine by opening the door. I think I used to pull the bottom tray out too, but I'm 80 now & not sure I'm remembering that right.

I don't have solar but I cut my electric bill 30-40% by simply hanging my clothes out to dry. Clothes dryers are energy hogs! Also, I've been hand washing my dishes for 3 years now saving that energy. I use the dishwasher as my drying as door open so dishes dry quickly a d moisture does not cause mold to grow. Once a month I run a short rinse cyc!e with bleach in the water to sanitize the interior

A couple of questions Sam. When taking in consideration the cost for all of the equipment, battery storage, and future upgrades how long do you think it will take to break even by being off the grid? I know there is a lot of peace of mind in not relying on the power grid but just curious how long does it really take if you are purchasing everything verses just being on the grid and paying your monthly bill. Secondly not sure there is a real need for this but can you set it up where it would automatically put you back on the grid if you were to need to instead of flipping a switch -- probably not necessary when it is easy to flip a switch but the techy side of me is wondering if you can do it. Great video you both have done a lot of work!!

Great video. I would be interested in seeing what your total capital costs were (panels, batteries, utility building, rentals for any equipment, etc. as well as the monthly cost for your power bill prior to getting the off-grid power solution. This will provide a "payback point" for the costs vs savings.

well now that used solar panels are like 0.20$/watt they are literally cheaper than plywood/osb lol. would be cool if you made a solar shed type setup. basically double the width of your ground mount array and double its height. i bet you could park a car in there. do a loft in the higher portion. there is one yt video ive found where a guy basically did that and said it was a bit finnickey getting them all to glue/seal togeather on the roof but he did bifacial and the see through look inside looks really fresh with the natural lighting. obviously as money allows. i know eventually you guys will be 100% offgrid. i subbed for more, thanks for uploading all your hardwork, i feel like recording makes it 3-4x as difficult to complete a project.

We have 41 solar panels and two tesla batteries and we run our home off of this and sell power to the grid. It saves a ton of money where we live because our county grid is run by gas. The cost of set up is high but the comfort of always having power is awesome. We live on an island so things can get crazy as far as electrics go. I know in TN tornadoes and other storms can cause a lot of problems but at least your electricity is not too expensive. Congrats on getting off grid! It is a comfort to be able to have control over your circumstances.

You could expand by putting a generator lockout (or transfer switch) in the soap shack or your shop. Then put an off-grid system in each with panels on the roof or carport to charge smaller systems in either or each. Doing this in either would mean your house system's battery would last longer. Do this later when you have the money rather than now when you might not have money for a bigger battery on your house system. BTW you could also use a smaller system to attach to the generator input in your house system. Smaller systems backs up big system, big system backs up smaller system and there's always the grid, but at lan even ower cost.

Unless you specifically want to be off-grid, using the grid as the battery works well in some states that require power companies to credit customers one for one, who put more energy back into the grid during the day. Then at night use those credits to draw power back from the grid. Some states do not force one for one credits and in those situations, using the grid as the battery is not as advantageous.

Since you are still on grid if you produce more than you require does your power company credit you for the excessive power produced? If so might it make sense to spend the monies you might on expensive batteries hoping to purchase enough for any emergency to add to your solar panels producing excessive power on a much more regular basis and happily accepting all that credit from your power company. Just a thought!

Sam this is just my opinion but you can continue to add lithium iron phosphate batteries to that bank over a long period of time unless you over work that battery. I'm sure you know to set various charging parameters so you don't completely charged the battery every day and that you don't completely deplete.
I have added batteries to my system I am not using the ethos but I am using lithium iron phosphate and I see very little performance degradation because I have babied my batteries
Of course I wouldn't wait a long time. It's too bad you are heating with electricity because yes heating elements suck suck suck
When I monitor my system the biggest spikes I see are 2 refrigerators defrost cycles.
All other heat in our house is done with propane

I have 100% solar on my house but I am not sure it is less expensive. I have to replace batteries periodically and the initial cost was a lot. The longer I use it the more cost effective it will be. I had no choice because of the cost of bringing the power into the property.

Hi. The beginning of the video was kind of odd. But I watched it anyway. 😂😂❤

, makes me want to run out and purchase you an electric car with a bad battery so Sam can crochet and knit a brand new battery. I guess you will have someone to drop one off at the stead for you.
I sorta doubt the current bluecollar worker can afford all that it takes to go off grid so you should wave your magic wand and all a person needs appears then you and your buddy can come and wire it all up.
Since. You are hooking into an exhisting system does it not need to ne inspected by the county

I'm sorry, modular or not, the Big Battery Ethos represents an absolutely terrible value for money in comparison to other options on the market. Only time it's a good value is when your a RUclipsr getting it for free.

Not instrested in the direction this channel is going, I've been watching a long time the change to all the high tech has become disappointing.
