yes many differentiate between consiousness and awareness for that reason. You can be aware of being unconsious. Or slipping out of consiousness or comming back into it. There are many levels of unconsiousness. Deep sleep isnt really disconnected from this world like dissociation or fainting bc touch or sound can easily have the consiousness return and you roughly know how much time has passed. You can see how dissociation is the I not wanting to be consious so what happens in experience also fades as the creation of I and the world always go hand in hand. Fainting was the deepest absence of I/consiousness I ever was aware of. Literally the only thing I could say about it afterwards, was I wasnt there as an observing presence.

I became aware during deep sleep once. I was like a blissful wave in an ocean of living light, and knew that the person I usually call 'me', was in fact a dream, and that this world is just a mental construct.

Wow that is a beautiful story of recognition!! ❤ and it is a great talentedness to put it in such delicious words. ❤😊❤ Absolutely can resonate with your comment. 😊 I've had the similar recognition to yours, while I was in the so called "awaken state" That "being like a blissful wave in an ocean of living light" is the only one true experience and existence for us, even during the so called awaken state or the so called dream state. Goes to show that if one can have this recognition whenever and in whichever "state" than it can be only one true self/awareness/being/consciousness. 😊🎉❤ NDE is an other way of helping some individual to recognise his or her true nature/self.❤❤❤

Mr. Rupert's articulation of "thoughts, feelings, perceptions, sensations" as just objects of awareness, rather than components of the "I" just always strikes me as so correct and right on and accurately descriptive of actual experience. I find it amazing he seems to have hit upon such a clear and contemporary way of talking about these topics.

Because "deep sleep" doesn't really "happen." Time is an illusion. "Deep sleep" is part of the dream of this world. You only dream that you "deep sleep." You wake up later and "time has gone by." That is part of the dream; part of the simulation, so to speak. No time actually went by. You didn't actually sleep. You just pretended to have an experience where you were a "human" in "deep sleep," and then believed that you did, just because you woke up and "things around you were different." In other words, your very own dream updated itself to reflect the belief that you "slept," when you never did. You are eternally awake/aware. That is why you never experience gaps in awareness; because there aren't any. Experience (dream) seems to change; awareness does not. Regardless of the content of awareness, it is always present.

When you are aware in "deep sleep " you've got it, when you are aware of all states coming going changing but you as awareness remains, you have unveiled your true self. You can't talk about deep sleep because you can't create a memory from the experience, you just experience it, its not even an experience, you are that. no one can take you there, they can only point you to pure awareness, and you experience "deep sleep" as awareness. Work on awareness in the wake state and dream state, and it will roll over into the deep sleep state, which is not a state but your true self. You will then live as awareness always, not experiencing any state if that makes sense.

in my experience fainting was a much deeper state of absorption then deep sleep. In deep sleep there is some observing presence there, noticing sounds, touch, knowing how much time roughly passes, knowing how long and how deep you have slept, in fainting there is no observing, just an absence of 'I', no connection to senses, time ect. edit: when I read about samadhi this is the same, just total absorption

1:00 => I had the image of a telescope-antenna from the 80´s. Deep sleep is the biggest tube at the base and then it pulls out the 2nd tube (dream state) out of itself, and then another one (waking state). All the time the BASE is simply there at the BASE :) And the 2nd and 3rd tube can easily be retracted into the BASE.

This is perhaps the third of Rupert's videos I've watched about deep sleep, thanks so much for posting, the synchronicity is awesome as I had just yesterday posted a comment elsewhere prompted by a previous video of Rupert's on this topic I had seen, and wow, an hour later here was a new video by Rupert on the exact same thing. Rupert Spira talks about our 3 levels or states of consciousness: the waking state which is mental or analytical, the dream state, and the deep sleep state which is not really a state but pure consciousness. Deep sleep, pure consciousness, which is the bulk of our sleep (dreams seem like a long time but they are actually only 5 minutes or less, I've read), is like dying every night because we are purely spirit as though we don't even have a body. Rupert talks about this in a few of his many videos. IMO it's a topic well worth learning about. I find it so unfortunate that we can't remember our deep sleep experiences in our waking state. What we call our waking state is truly the opposite; we are asleep at the wheel, run by our minds, immersed in the 3D simulation. Our dream state is pretty much the same, except our analytical mind is asleep so our minds are just fed mental stuff by the matrix. The waking and dream states are mental. What's called deep sleep is called what it is because our minds are asleep, or at least not active. IMO deep sleep is incredibly fascinating. I mean, WOW!! To know that every night we actually return to being pure consciousness while still in this incarnation and still having a mind; that even while existing in the 3D, we spend a third of our lives as though we are not incarnated at all. We truly are pure consciousness, we just spend two-thirds of our incarnation having forgotten that. Kurt says, remember who you are. We spend one-third of our lives remembering, in deep sleep. And we spend two-thirds of our lives forgetting who we are. So of course the solution is to bring the awareness of our true consciousness into our waking state. The way to do that is by meditation, which removes distractions, and allows our minds to quiet down more and more into stillness. And in that stillness we experience simply being, our pure consciousness, which is peace, joy, love. And from there we can transform our 3D lives. This is why we meditate. I want to soak up everything Rupert says about deep sleep, what could be more important and compelling as we strive to find our way through and out of the simulation labyrinth to our true selves? Love Rupert ❤️

Having done shrooms a few times, there was one unexpected experience where I "fell asleep," and I was fully aware of my absence in what I recall as a void. Freaked me out! And then another time, I felt myself as tired, and yet the concept of actually sleeping seemed like an impossibility, like a distant memory of this activity I used to do, and as the trip continued I felt so unbelievably awake that I believed I would never have to sleep again! And I'm talking about a calm wakefulness. Not a feeling like I just had several cups of coffee. I wasn't wired. Just awake. The only people who experience what we believe to be sleeping are the people awake that may witness someone sleeping. The same goes for death. We see a body die, but that person is waking up into a new dimension.

If in deep sleep there were a total absence of consciousness, then upon "waking" one would not have the ability to "re-collect" themselves as an individual (jiva) with an individual history etc.
The fact that we DO "re-collect" ourselves (our jiva) upon waking up from deep sleep indicates at least a certain "subtle" level of consciousness is still present even in deep sleep.
It is not that there is no consciousness in deep sleep, its that there is no awareness in the way we usually understand that term.
Awareness for us is "awareness OF.." because we usually operate within the dualistic context (of mind) of a "subject being aware of an object." This is only a dualistic kind of "awareness" or "awareness of."
"Consciousness" (turiya) however is the basic space where awareness can arise.
And so awareness in a sense is merely the "bright potential to know" (the light) which arises out of the limitless clear "space" of consciousness which is ever present.
Consciousness is not an object of awareness, it is its underlying basis.
    ❤🙏

One time I was so depressed I just couldn't bear the weight of existence. I actually felt the physical sensation of depression. Like a weight on me all the time making everything seem hard to do and it got so intense that it was like I broke through some kind of barrier that I didn't know existed and I saw the light of God unobstructed and I realized that I was like a beam of light coming out from God and when I saw God I saw my relative conditioned life in God and everything that existed was not just part of God but rather God was fully and wholly present within everything equally. Then I descended back into normal consciousness again except the depression was gone and it has never returned. Since that time I have gradually regained most of that realization again but less intense. Now I just see it as that is what reality actually is and our individual lives are woven into the tapestry of the universe in such a way that we are a permanent part of it. It is a living tapestry that we call existence.

That's how your body grows too and does its thing... While our certain mental faculties are shut down, our brains is lit up like a Christmas tree, yet we're not aware of it at all, yet there must be some consciousness, some awareness conducting the symphony of interactions within the body, inside a cell... Can you imagine how actually little awareness we have access to?? Who are we???

The question of why you can't remember being conscious in deep sleep, despite the fact that consciousness is present, points to the intricate relationship between awareness and memory. To explore this, consider the nature of consciousness and its interplay with the brain's processes during different states of sleep.
In deep sleep, you are indeed in a state of pure consciousness, but it's a state where the mind and its usual mechanisms of forming and retaining memories are significantly less active. Deep sleep, or slow-wave sleep, is characterized by minimal brain activity in the areas involved in conscious thought and memory formation. This state allows for deep rest and restorative processes but does not engage the cognitive functions necessary to create lasting memories.
When you are in deep sleep, your awareness is not lost; rather, it is in a different mode of operation. The consciousness that is present during deep sleep is akin to a backdrop that holds the space for experiences but does not actively record or interpret them in the way that waking consciousness does. This means that while you are aware, the nature of your awareness in deep sleep is not conducive to forming memories that you can later access.
The reason you cannot remember deep sleep experiences is not that awareness is absent but that the brain's ability to consolidate and store memories is greatly diminished. Memories are typically formed through active cognitive processes, which are largely inactive during deep sleep. This explains why, despite the presence of awareness, the experiences during this phase do not translate into recallable memories.
Understanding this helps to differentiate between various states of consciousness. Waking consciousness is highly engaged with memory formation and retrieval, while deep sleep consciousness serves a different, restorative function without engaging in the same memory processes. Recognizing this distinction can deepen your appreciation of how different states of consciousness contribute to your overall experience and well-being.
In essence, the inability to remember deep sleep experiences is not a reflection of a lack of awareness but rather an aspect of how the brain operates in different states. Each state of consciousness has its own role and purpose, and while deep sleep provides essential rest and rejuvenation, it does not involve the cognitive functions required for memory retention. This understanding highlights the richness of consciousness and the varied ways it manifests across different states.

I enjoyed the thought-provoking interchange between Rupert and his student in this video. However, for an adherent of classical Advaita Vedanta like me, Rupert’s formulation of our deep sleep experience lacks the logical soundness of the Advaita narrative I prefer.
As I understand it, Rupert’s thesis is that the experience of deep sleep is the essential nature of Awareness. Consequently, all other experiences, e.g., waking, dreaming, etc., are merely illusory perturbations of this unchanging deep sleep experience. Despite its simplicity and elegance, the drawback of this formulation is that it does not allow for the possibility of Awareness to be free of the deep sleep experience altogether, i.e., for Awareness to be neither the experiencer nor the experience of deep sleep. Consequently, Awareness is not limitless in this formulation. In other words, limitlessness is not the essential nature of Awareness in Rupert’s formulation. Therefore, I submit that Rupert’s thesis is logically flawed.
Also, my understanding of the classical Advaita Vedanta narrative on deep sleep is very different from what is presented by Rupert in this video. For instance, I am not aware of any authentic writings of Sri Shankara on Vedanta wherein he presents the notion of “Turiya athitha” which Rupert attributes to classical Advaita Vedanta. Furthermore, the writings of Sri Shankara on the Mandukya Karika make it very clear that Turiya is not a “fourth state” as Rupert mistakenly assumes that to be.

    • @mrbeyong
      @mrbeyong 8 дней назад

In Spira's formulation Consciousness does not experience any sleep as you mistakenly interpret. Sleep does not point to any state. Sleep is just a pointer to the Pure consciousness of Being. In formulations like Nisargadatta Maharaj's Consciousness is neither the experiencer nor the experience of sleep for the simple reason that he proposes unconsciousness in that supposed "state." What many overlook is that this is what materialism and nihilism also propose.

You misunderstood it, and that's what I pointed out to you. You argue that Rupert teaches that "the experience of deep sleep is the essential nature of Awareness," but that is not what Rupert proposes. For him there is no third state, called deep sleep. He says that what everyone calls a "deep sleep state" is actually Pure Awareness of Being. In your critique you also add and I quote it; "limitlessness is not the essential nature of Awareness in Rupert's formulation". This is not correct and in the video and in all his books, he says the opposite. As for Turiya, Rupert says that there is no fourth state, just as Shankara pointed out in his commentary on the karika, from Gaudapada to the Mandukya Upanishad. FYI, Advaita Vedanta 101 informs us that STATE is subject to change while ESSENTIAL NATURE is not. I invite you to re-read my original posting with this in view. I would ask Rupert, “what are the characteristics of deep sleep state which differentiate it from non-existence”
I understand the concept that we don’t remember deep sleep because there are no physical qualities relating to the senses to remember, and that is precisely how memory is created and stored, but is there then any evidence of having an experience in any capacity at all? Can it be described in any non physical manner? I just feel like eternal deep sleep is what most people consider “dead dead”.

  • @onlymelodic109

I must be gravely mistaken here or Rupert is. It is NOT my experience that I remember nothing of my meditations.
I view memory as part and parcel of awareness/intelligence or else there would be no trace of functioning, reasoning, teaching etc.
Does memory need objective phenomena to function, is not the experience of presence of being, bliss, whatnot plenty enough? And how could one know or describe anything if there was no hint of any memory?
If there were not memory there would be no Vedanta not anything else for that matter.
A memoryless place/state is a place just outside the edge of consciousness.
People from ancient times knowingly traverse the whole of the sleeping and waking cycle with no break of consciousness (and memory), if they were to remember nothing of it they would have nothing much to talk about afterwards.
If it is just the ego/mind that can cheat its way throughout this experience without be thrown to infinite forgetfulness that could explain it, maybe.
    Something is amiss here..
12:39 If the mind can't know it or remember it, and there is no other agent (beyond the mind) active during it, then to imagine or ponder or postulate that is full of being and consciousness and bliss without knowing or remebering anything about it makes not much sense.

Blows my mind. But I ask, how do we know this state really exists if there is no memory of it. It is a belief of reality we are accepting, but can't prove with our minds, because there is no objective elements to experience or remember. Does that mean it exists or not?

How about.. in deep sleep consciousness is ignorant about itself and just experiencing the nothingness or the void whereas in the fourth state as per advaita it's aware of itself, aware of awareness but without mind where thoughts and objective witnessing is totally absent and that's the purest state of consciousness. Where it's experiencing itself in the purest form ever.

Advaita doesn't say that Turiya is the fourth state, as Rupert mentions here. That is grossly incorrect.Advaita itself means that ONE alone exists.
Gaudapadacharya, who was the guru of the guru of Adi Shankaracharya, wrote a very famous commentary on Mandukyopanishad, called Mandukya Karika, which clearly mentions Consciousness as the ONE Reality, and the three states of Waking, Dreaming and Deep sleep as the "appearances" of that one reality.

As long as this question continues to be explained in duality, the confusion will remain. The commentary is locked in imagination and can never approach truth. The basic energy manifests as an organism and functions by constant transfer of energy from the environment to the organism, thereby fueling all aspects of life itself including consciousness, deep sleep, and dreaming. It is nothing more than energy transfer or transformation. The spiritual conversation creates the false self. Even the non-dualist suffers this illusion. Even as they deny it.

@@selbstbestimmtheit Conjecture, (Guessing) is a product of Imagination. The problem with imagination is it creates more fiction than truth. How do we know this is true? How do we know that Rupert isn't fooling himself & then others? His whole thesis falls apart if he cannot create some "spin" / story about our individual Awareness in deep sleep, or being under anesthesia etc.. So we would also have to conclude that this "Activity of Awareness/Consciousness" then also creates a homo-sapien history of rapes, murders, genocide, etc? That's the history of our species & continues to be. Rupert says, "Consciousness must "forget" itself" and that's the reason for the atrocities. That is also a "Guess". You your lineage inception was initially FORMED ( the source) not BORN ( the biological). The FORM source and the BORN biological are in a symbiotic relationship. One cannot be without the other to be the intelligent species as a whole. When you say to yourself, " I am falling asleep", that would be correct because your FORM source has sent that message to your brain that due to energy use consumption and time factor, its time for you to go to sleep and therefore your brain has received that message from the FORM source in anticipation. It would be like being Anaesthetized to induce a loss of consciousness where you would be aware of that in anticipation. Absolute you are not conscious in deep sleep. Your Form source has made sure of that and so has the Anaesthetist.
Reality couldn't care less what consciousness is nor what state of consciousness someone is in.
The paper and colour comparison for infinite consciousness is just a gimmick to justify infinite consciousness. There is no such thing as infinite consciousness because consciousness has to be implemented by a FORM source for the Form source awareness of its surrounds for its survival and evolving. The Universe does not require consciousness because the Universe does not need to survive nor evolve and only exists in random events and random means " done without conscious decision.
The Consciousness tool has stored your experience to be recalled when required. Hello!

Yes, you are aware enough to ask. We are all aware, but add onto this our false mind created “egoic mind”. This is your individual character in the cosmic play. Which you may educate, employ, and entertain. Choose wisely. Stay present to avoid pitfalls along your journey, or you lose touch with your consciousness and as a result lose presence by focussing on the future or past ( anxiety future/ depression past) . Both of which are false realities, where you do not exist. You are then distracted from the present reality, your goal is to stay fully present, to be able to react without thought to your egoic mind, but act from your source, a localization of infinite consciousness, where love, compassion and true conscious knowledge originate. All thought removes you from the present, and are false images, based on past data, for right or wrong.

Well if deep sleep was the absense of awerness, would not that imply that you would not even hear the alarm, how would that work, if it was the absense of awerness nothing could put you out of it and back into awerness, you need some awerness to listen to the alarm. Awerness is there in some other form in terms of duality speaking because in absolute reality is the same as the whole paper. And your system works that way, that maybe you might dream, you might hear to the footsteps of the cut, or the dogs outside howling but the system will not see a reason to awake you, there is no good reason not danger or threat , and no reason to transfer everything into memory on to the awaken state.
One day i woke up and felt that i did not see a dream when i was asleep.
But then my brother told me " i had a dream tonight about this and that"
And suddenly it came to me that i indeed had a dream too , and the memory came of a weird dream that i could not remember the details of, but i remembered that i actually had a dream.
Is not that proof that our experiences as we are awake and tell the story of " when i sleep i am nothing i literally dont exist" is fake and just a story?
