Now I use a couple of 200 watt magnetic heaters on the oil pan and the factory plenum heater warming the heads. It is still an effort to get worn out diesels started when it is -30C.

Where I used to live in the Canadian north we used to use propane ‘Tiger torches’ with a length of stove pipe with an elbow on the end pointed upwards towards the (all metal) engine. The torch and open flame was kept safely away from the vehicle with the heat blown through the pipe directed right up into the engine compartment. One of my friends was nicknamed ‘Stove Pipe Dave’ because he’d go around in the cold and get peoples engines heated up in this manner if they needed.
Would it not be easier to use easy start , with a diesel i used to use lighted rag and hold it on air intake , i owned 2 of those need one with a gear box reduction box

Small block Chevy? Needs a gear reduction starter. Tons of choices. If it’s a 168 tooth flywheel look up a starter for a 1998 K1500 5.7 Silverado. Old Carquest number was (and may still work) 6449s. Should crank it a lot better.

I had to do such a preheating once in Poland, as we don't get such cold winters anymore :( It was -15C after a -20C night, and I had to start a diesel car with all the glow plugs burned out. I used a gas camping gas stove over a small gas cartridge. Lit it up and slided under the oil pan for about an hour. After that time a came out with the battery warmed up inside and with a gas torch that I placed near the inlet to the intake manifold (removed the big air tube coming from the intercooler before that). It started almost no problem, I think 20-30 minutes preheating would also be enough in such conditions, but it was the first time I ever tried it so I wanted to be sure it starts :)

C'mon, don't they sell engine block heaters in Finland...? Have one installed in my '71 K5's 350 that sees occasional all year around usage; I'd NEVER crank it up in so low temps without it plugged in. IMO to lit up a fire underneath an engine that's third world or Siberia behaviour...

Oikein sitten 50-60-lukujen metsätyömaitten menetelmä. Silloin vaan tehtihin kaksi nuotiota. Toinen moottorille ja toinen voimansiirrolle.
