    I grew up with these old tractors. The six cylinder is “da bomb” because it is a real slice of rare history. The V8 is a real WOW factor. Nice job for making the V8 more practical. If you were giving one away I’ll take the six or the four and go to work. What’s missing, millions of very small, resourceful, strong farms owned by real men and women like my Grandparents were. My Grandmother had 1000 layer hens in 1948 and made many times the money of a furniture factory worker in North Carolina. Eggs were 40 or 50 cents a dozen and a worker made 75 cents or $1 an hour.

  • @karlelliott9254
    @karlelliott9254 4 года назад

    It’s so sad there is nothing made today this practical, inexpensive, long lasting and quiet. I have a 1953 Jubilee my Grandfather bought new and it’s never been apart. It retired to light bush hog and finish mowing in 1973. No new clutch, no new brakes, original radiator all are sixty seven years and counting.

    Henry Ford made a "handshake deal" with Harry Ferguson to build and sell Harry's tractors under licence in North America as Harry owned all of the patents. Edsel Ford reneged on that deal and produced the tractors without paying Harry a penny. Harry took them to court and won, Ford had to pay Harry over $6 million, which back in the day was alot of money. Harry Ferguson was from England, he also designed and sold the implements to go with the tractor, the plough, cultivator, etc. Later Harry sold his patents to Massey-Harris, and the company became Massey-Ferguson.

      Probably the purists. If this were some super rare tractor that was cut up I could see the disdain. But ford 8N and 9N's are EVERYWHERE. It's really a testament to their popularity and longevity of the series to see how many of them are still out there, and in running condition. I think both are very cool modifications. I've got an old 641 Workmaster and I have to admit as dead reliable as that tractor is I could certainly use that 6-cylinder's horsepower when fighting both high brush and the up-hill bits on the property. :)

    • @ronfullerton3162
      @ronfullerton3162 4 года назад

      My uncle had one, and their were many uses for it. It couldn't do some jobs of the big tractors, but sure could do other jobs easier or better than the big ones. My uncle lived on a busy highway, and his little Ford had the overdrive in it. It was a curves handle on the left side just ahead of the clutch petal. My uncle oversized the tires and disconnected the governor, and it would run close to twenty-five mph on the highway. So we used it to haul in from the field.

    • @kennethstanton5407
      @kennethstanton5407 4 года назад

      @@ronfullerton3162 That Hi.Low range was a nice addition that many 8Ns had (and possibly some 9Ns too? ). Helped a lot, but it still didn't have enough power to get out of its own way and always seemed to lack traction. We had a John Deere MT that was comparable in power and it always seemed that if I had a small tractor job, I could do more with it than with an 8N in general. Also used a Jubilee edition as a loader tractor. I was happy to see it replaced with a proper utility tractor. To its credit, that was pretty serious abuse for it and it (mostly) stood up. Did break a kingpin eventually since the loader was undeniably overloading the poor little thing. Lol. But, it was cheap to fix that little detail and get back to abusing it :-) Yes, they were tougher than they looked.
      With respect to having the ability to travel quickly ...For getting up and moving on the road, I did love the fact that our IH 1468 (That's not a typo) would slide down the road at about 30 mph. Definitely made people take a second look lol.

    • @ronfullerton3162
      @ronfullerton3162 4 года назад

      @@kennethstanton5407 If I was hauling in at my uncle's, it was like driving an old truck. You started out low and just kept shifting. Then you had to worry about how I would ever get it slowed down, because it was so light and the brakes were not in adjustment, so you couldn't just tromp on them together too hard. But the way it stood up to the punishment it received, I also thought them to be an amazing little tractor. Dad had a John Deere model "H" for a small chore tractor. With the tricycle front end, it could get into some places even my uncle's Ford wouldn't. And it could do a little more work because of the extra weight it had on the Ford. But the poor little thing only went eight or ten mph in high gear wound out, so was not a road tractor at all. All those tractors had their "nitch" where they fit in. And I enjoyed operating all of them I had a chance at. Lots of fun to think back on those days.

    • @kennethstanton5407
      @kennethstanton5407 4 года назад

      @@ronfullerton3162 Absolutely agree that we had fun running all of those tractors in those days. As a kid, our two "big tractors" were a JD 60 and a 44 Massey. Man, we thought we could move anything if we hooked those two together lol. Grew up operating pretty much every one of the 2 cylinder JDs plus a fleet of other similar horsepower range machines. Wasn't until the 1960s that we started our move into larger tractors such as Case 830, 930, JD 4020... Now even those are hardly big enough to power a grain augur lol. How times change.

    • @ronfullerton3162
      @ronfullerton3162 4 года назад +1

      @@kennethstanton5407 How true. When I first crawled into a tractor we had the little "H" as well as an "A" John Deere. As I could do more, Dad traded the "H" for a "B". Later on, as we got more ground, the "B" was traded for a "3010 diesel". Thought we were on top of the world. And as you said, hardly any of them could even move today's auger wagons. How times have changed!

He was a body shop many for many years and really did a number on it. He showed it to us and offered it sell it back to us for much higher price. It looked like new again. Also ran like new again. I've been on tractors my entire life and you would almost have to try to roll it straight back on a wheel stand on a hill to roll it over. Most tractors will end up standing straight up digging in the ground with their 3 point and slamming back to the ground or just start plowing with their hitch until the rear (now bottom) cylinders flood out with oil and the engine shuts off. I'm 100% certain that for every 10 people killed in a roll over left and right 1 person might have gotten hurt rolling straight back or forward. I'm sorry about your father but if you want to bring some awareness to farmers about their machines tell them to keep their damn fingers, arms, clothing away from, and keep the safety guards in place on and around their PTO. That's where the real danger lays.

During our extremely harsh springs, he uses it to pull vehicles out of washed out roads covered in thick mud, vehicles stuck in foods, and to pull downed trees off roads, houses, and other vehicles. In summer, he still uses it like a standard tractor. He lives on that tractor. It has never let him down.
