MYZICA, the brainchild of producer Micah Tawlks and singer Isaaca Byrd, is the latest indie pop duo to come out of the Nashville music scene. In the spring of 2014, after a few weeks of tinkering with the bones of some new tracks, Tawlks finished what would become MYZICA’S first song, “Ready Or Not,” in the hollows of his basement during a co-writing session with singer-songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones. He immediately turned to his longtime friend Byrd, with whom he’d always wanted to work as a lead vocalist after meeting her while she was playing bass and singing background vocals for artists like The Bridges and Harrison Hudson. Three weeks later, the newly formed duo had finished three additional songs - including “Wait Just A Minute” - with even more written, and MYZICA was officially born. The band’s debut EP will be out later this summer.
Honestly, I've loved MYZICA's "Love & Desire" album since it came out (have the CD and signed Vinyl) and it honestly baffles me how underrated they are. There hasn't been a MYZICA song I haven't loved yet. As much as I wanna hold out hope for a follow-up album, or anything new at this point, their lack of activity since 2019 and the recent de-activation of their official website and Twitter leaves me worried we may not see them ever again as MYZICA.
If that's the case, I wanna say thank you for creating a beautiful album that hasn't only inspired me in my own songwriting ventures, but has lifted my spirits and become a go-to feel good album for any occasion. Thanks to finding MYZICA years ago by chance, I opened myself up to an entire lovely, beautiful world of indie music I'd never gotten to experience otherwise. I hope you know, no matter how many years go by, someone will be replaying these songs, dancing, singing along and reminiscing about all the good memories connected to them.
Thank you, MYZICA. I hope someday, we see you again, no matter if it's as MYZICA, a new project or just yourselves.
