  • Here's a look at Castle Creation's newest entry level brushless combo. The Sidewinder 3 ESC and 1406 4-Pole motor steps up your RTR rig's performance. Combine that with waterproof performance and you will have some trouble free fun in you sub 5lbs. Castle's "plug n play" system with minimal soldering (just your choice of high current connector (Traxxas, Deans, etc)) will get you playing very quick after the easy install. Your choice of 4600, 5700, 6900 and 7700kv options give a huge range of speed vs. torque. I will show what comes in the newly designed box and some upclose video of each of the components.
    Here's the newest version from Castle: bit.ly/3aBwOZu

    Castle's Sidewinder ESC, the leading 1/10th scale sport brushless ESC, is now waterproof. The new Sidewinder 3 can power crawlers on water filled trails, SCTs through rain soaked parking lots, and AWDs on rips across muddy fields. Drivers can follow their irresistible urges to drive in the mud or stomp their truck in puddles without damaging their controller.
    Designed for 1/10th
    The Sidewinder 3 is a great fit for 1/10th off-road, on-road, and rock crawlers running up to 3S LiPo. It sports updated circuitry for faster response time and improved reliability. As always, the Sidewinder 3 offers industry-leading software functions and USB programming capability via Castle Link USB adapter (sold separately).
    Same Amazing Price
    Retaining the astonishing retail price of $79.95 (ESC only), the Sidewinder 3 offers world class performance at an entry level price.
    Legal mumbo jumbo
    Although Sidewinder 3 and Castle brushless motors are waterproof, always rinse the ESC and motor with fresh water after exposure to corrosives or dirt. While the motor and controller may be waterproof, we suggest users confirm that the rest of their vehicle, including the batteries, servo, radio and chassis, are also waterproof before exposing them to liquids of any kind.

    I have the 5700 combo in my converted RC10gt. Definitely a great combo especially for the price. Mainly run it on 2s and it still hits the 55 mph mark with no over heating problems. Looking forward to see it in such a light car.

    Cool. My first brushless combo from Castle back in 2008 was the micro sidewinder 8000kv for my rc18r and up to now still working fine and will transfer it to another 18scale chassis. Anyways good video man and I like that 10scale ESC with 3 female bullet connector but the only downside of Castle is that they only stick to green color and just wish they would make in different color

      Brandon Davis-White Thanks Brandon. Not sure on the exact turn, but you would be fine with either. The 4600 would give you better torque, the 5700 more top end speed. 4600 would play better with 3s Lipo though

    I'm looking to get a sc10.2 and I am considering the sidewinder 3 with the 5700kv motor. How would you say this setup would work out? Also did you have any issues with running this esc and the savox servo? I had an MMP a while ago and it would cause glitching.

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  10 лет назад

      Hey, how's it going? it should be fine in the 10.2. The only annoyance (coming from so many sensored set up) is the hesitation at the start up being sensorless. Otherwise, you may need a Voltage Cap for the Savox. I ran this set up with out one, but it really depends on the cast of electronics.

    • @wakborder76
      @wakborder76 10 лет назад

      The RCNetwork Yeah I've been hesitant with castle esc's with savox servos especially when you throw spektrum into the mix lol. I think I may just go with a viper system, they've treated me well so far. Hopefully I'll run into you at OCRC some time.

    I can't decide between the 3800, 4600, or 5700. I have a rustler and i want to go onroad and offroad and when i go offroad i want to hit over 70 mph. I also don't want heat issues. What combo should i get?

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  10 лет назад

      Well, I'm not a rustler expert, but have seen many of the 70+ mph club rustlers out there. There's a couple of things you want to keep in mind......kv, pinion size and voltage. The downfall of most of these items will be heat! I don't know that you'll be able to hit 70 offroad though with any of these combos. the 5700 can take 3s, but you will only be able to do short runs on stock gearing. The 3800 probably will never have enough top end even on 3s. You're best bet is the 4600, with tall gearing on 3s. Prepare to break things though, especially off road! lol

  • @adamb2619
    @adamb2619 9 лет назад

    How well do you think this would perform in a new Losi TLR 22T 2.0 1/10th stadium truck? I look to do club racing in their "mod" class. I am looking for a nice budget (Under $150) . Everything these days seems to be geared towards SCT. Or may you have a recommendation?

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  9 лет назад

      +Adam Brcic It will get you started and at about $105 it's a steal.....In the end, you will want to get into a Sensored set up. It will be much smoother, especially at lower RPM;s and really run more efficient/cooler

    I was needing your help on picking a combo because I have tamiya plug batteries and I don't want them to melt the ends, and I didn't want to have to solder them on if I was going to get a lipo, I'm running a 6cell and a 7cell tamiya and didn't want the batteries to go to waste, so what should I do

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  9 лет назад +1

      Tanner Owens If you want to run brushless and Lipo, you really need to invest in some decent plugs. It's the best transfer of power and it reduces the heat by the clean transfer. Dean's is the most common and are fairly inexpensive. TRX (Traxxas) and Star are another couple of great ones, although the TRX are a pain to solder. Most Hobby shops will charge a small fee to solder (mine does $5 per ESC/Battery) and some will even do it for free if you buy the products there. Do NOT attempt to solder a lipo if you're a novice. I have just started soldering my own Lipo leads after years of practice

      The 5700kv is the fastest motor that you can run 3s in according to Castle. With that combo, I have ran pretty quick: The RCNetwork - HPI Sprint 2 Flux - CRAZY Fast 3s Lipo Speed runs This was a bone stock Sprint 2 flux on 3s

  • @grymlock13

    Hey Rich! Love your channel and really enjoying your Get My Drift series. I just recently picked up an HPI Sprint 2 Drift to dip my feet into the world of rc drift cars (I fly mini quads FPV usually) and after my first run I was hooked. Two weeks later though, I think I burned out the brushed motor. Running Venom 2s lipos and now the esc lights up and does its thing, but no beeps. Steering works fine but zero throttle response.
    Are you still liking the Castle Sidewinder combo? Thinking of upgrading to the one you're using since the price is reasonable and has good reviews. Thanks again for the awesome vids! Cheers!

    I have a nitro 4tec im converted over to brushless whats the best combo set up to use battery, gear, motor &esc...tryin to drag race like 150 or 200 feet

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  9 лет назад

      I've never owned a 4tec, but after checking the specs, it looks to be the same size as a 1/10th scale 190-200mm touring car. As long as you have removed all the Nitro stuff and got a motor mount, your good to go. As for power train, on the less expensive side, the Castle SV3 combo (esc/motor) with a 5700kv motor will get you going at about $105. The SV3 is 3s Lipo compatible for your top speed. Try and find a smaller capacity 3000mah 11.1v 3s pack. I'm not sure on the gearing pitch of the 4tec, but watch your temps as you add teeth. That will tell you how the system is working.

      +Damien Armenta The 4600 will have less torque and more top end speed than the 3800kv. The SV3 should be fin in the SCB though. As for top end speed, you'll want the 4600 if you have super long straight at your track. If the track is tight and windy, the 3800 might be better

      BashingWithRadioControl It would work.......but probably not the best upgrade vs the vxl. I would choose the 4600kv over the 5700......and watch the heat and gearing. Also, really depends on what you've upgraded on you're Slash (have you added weight with Aluminum?) In the end, the combo needs to match the weight/driveline (4wd/2wd) in the vehicle.

    • @BashingWithRadioControl

      Ahh right okay yeah im speaking generally about the the combo not to much the kv. My vxl system is about 3 years old so its pretty worn out haha. @TheRCNetwork  9 лет назад

      BashingWithRadioControl The SV3 should be okay in a mostly stock Slash 4x4. Like I said, watch the temps, and you'll be fine. As for other combos......for the price, the SV3 can't be beat for a name brand USA combo. There's some decent Hobby wing stuff out there, and I do have some new HW combos I'm testing right now.....just can't recommend them yet

    i put the 4600 kv in my stampede 4x4. i ran it on 3s a few times with 11/54 (stock gearing) but it got pretty hot, so i geared it to 13/54 and now i only run on 2s and it only gets hot if i push it really hard but even then it doesnt get horribly hot. so pretty much i have the speed that a 3s on 3500 kv 11/54 would

    Hey guys, I just today bought this same combo but with the 4600kv motor.. but it's sensored and the ESC has no input for the sensor wire. I've read that this motor can be run as a sensorless.. is this true and okay for the setup? What are my options here.. this is for a 2wd slash and I'm really up the creek without a paddle on this one as I'm still somewhat new hobby in regards to brushless.

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  7 лет назад +1

      Random Andrew if you bought THIS combo (4600, 5700 etc) it's sensorless only. It can easily handle a Slash 2wd

    • @RandomAndrew
      @RandomAndrew 7 лет назад

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  7 лет назад +1

      Random Andrew it's definitely an SV3 box? Does the motor have "A" "B" and "C" with an open port for a sensor wire (15 pinned port)?

    2:45 i have a slash 2wd vxl with an lcg chassis rpm front a arms, steering, and caster blocks and a rpm rear shock tower and rpm nerf bars with proline trenchers on split six beadlock wheels. I normaly run a racers edge 2s lipo 5200 MaH battery and it weighs aroung 5.8 pounds i plan to upgrade to aluminum steering, and caster blocks along with aluminum rear axle carriers and an aluminum front bulk head and aluminum wheel hubs and finally (omg so many "and"s) rear rpm a arms. now knowing that this will add some weight (not sure how much weight)would this system be an ok chooce or is that to much weight for it. if it is an ok chooce which kv amount should i go for to get good power (not sure if high kv number = more power) if its not a good chooce than what other affordable but powerful water proof system would you suggest? Hi, can we put a brushed motor on this sidewinder 3

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  9 лет назад

      Keven Qc It looks like yes! I found this info in the SV3 manual: Brushed Motor Wiring
      Reversing Brushed Motor Mode:
      Use this mode if you wish to use reverse. Make sure you change the Motor
      type setting to “Brushed Reversing” in the ESC before using a brushed
      motor. Use only the red and black motor wires from the ESC, or the outside
      connectors on the ESC. In most applications, the red wire from the ESC will
      connect to the red wire (or positive + side hood) on your motor, and the
      black wire to the black wire (or negative - side hood) of the motor. The white
      motor wire (or center connector on the ESC) is not used. After calibration,
      (explained later) you may need to swap the two motor wires to get the
      wheels to spin in the right direction.
      High Power
      Brushed Motor Mode:
      Using High Power Brushed Motor Mode will allow for the use of lower turn
      count brushed motors, and forward only operation. Make sure you change
      the Motor type setting to “Brushed High Power” in the ESC before using a
      brushed motor. Connect all three of the ESC motor wires to the negative (-)
      side of the motor. You can either use a “Y” harness from the ESC battery
      input positive wire to connect to both the battery and the positive side of
      the motor, or use a single wire from the positive ESC input to the positive
      battery pole and then continue to the positive (+) side of the motor.

    If anyone does better unboxing's than the RCNetwork I have yet to see them. I have one of these combos and am tossing up wether to shorten the motor wires or just do a loop back. From what I have read it is ok to shorten the cables on the NC14xx series motors as long as you keep the wires even lengths. I have to solder some new bullets anyway to get the wires at 90degees to the ESC instead of straight up, so as not to foul body.

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  10 лет назад

      Bought it in 2013. The box says that it's waterproof so I have driven in light rain but I have never sunk the motor or anything, The motor has very poor sealing so I'm not even surprised, I'm just disappointed to Castle.

      Well...that's 4 years on a $100 investment. I think you may have got your money' worth out of it.

    what motor timing is best?

    • @TheRCNetwork
      @TheRCNetwork  8 лет назад

      +Brian Gradwell I typically don't use any motor timing....it creates havoc on other things. Picking the right motor for your vehicle and the right gearing is key!

    Can I go 100 mph on this system in a rustler

    • @TheRCNetwork

      +Brian Gradwell Not sure....I've never been apart of the 100mph craze. I know you're def capable of 60-70 with a 3s and this combo, plus the correct gearing

      +The RCNetwork I just purchased the sidewinder 3 and put it in a 2wd slash. I ran it yesterday for the first time on a track. the more I drove it the slower it got. recharged battery and it did the same thing. it is running slower. I put that battery in my rustler with the sidewinder and it ran great. a buddy said that the gearing can put a strain on the motor and esc and throw it into limp mode. any help would much be appreciated. thanks

      +Derrick luttrell I run a 5200mah 2s lipo in my rustler and it runs great do you have lipo cut off on?

    • @TheDluttrell

      I don't know. I did not get a programmer or anything. My rustler was literally a plug and play, and it runs awesome. I have a 5000 mah 2s. It will not even ballon the tires.

    we need motor 6500 kv

    • @TheRCNetwork

      It will run too hot in most 1/10th scale vehicles. 5700kv is about the limit in lighter weight RC's

      Scott Ferguson Get the the Robinson Racing steel spur and you should be ok, If not, I'd recommend saving for the Proline gearbox. It's made for the Slash so it should fit the Rustler. I've heard that the Proline gearbox is bulletproof but it does cost a lot of money
