Any Given Sunday: Willie Beamen Enters First Game

- In the 13th game of the season, against the Minnesota Americans, both the Sharks' starting quarterback, Jack "Cap" Rooney (Dennis Quaid), and the second-string quarterback, Tyler Cherubini (Pat O'Hara), are injured and forced to leave the field. The desperate Sharks call upon third-string quarterback and former seventh-round draft pick Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx). Beamen is visibly nervous and makes a number of errors, illustrating his lack of knowledge regarding the team's playbook. He vomits in the huddle, which begins a ritual that he follows every game. Although the Sharks lose this game by a small margin, Beamen, despite his initial struggles, plays well and gains confidence.
A great scene conveying adrenaline, confusion, and hostility of the game situation for Steamin Beamen and everyone. I know that critics panned the hell out of this film, but I think Any Given Sunday is one of the best sports films ever.
Super prescient too.
Preach
This move was like....the replacements level sports movie. Hilarious cliches in rapid succession. Like real sports-ball.
Totally agree- great direction how we see so much of it from Willie’s perspective. Football seems much more chaotic on the field. This is one of, if not my favorite, sports movie.
I always loved this scene. Just the chaos of the line of scrimmage. All those defenders gunning for you. The trash talk. Game speed.
Pacino repeatedly looking at Beamen and realizing he has no idea who the hell he even is despite him being on the team is great and tremendous, realistic acting. I’ve always loved that little moment of that scene.
You’d figure he would at least know his qbs.
It showed that he was an incompetent coach. How the heck do you not know who is on your team. Especially the Quarterback's.
@@King_Arthur_ bro he’s like 70..
@@King_Arthur_ he obviously knows who he is. He just doesn’t communicate with him that often he’s not the starter or even the backup. That part of the scene was subtle detail that gets overlooked a lot. This would happen if Tom Brady got hurt in New England and they were down to the 3rd string. He doesn’t have the same chemistry. What he was doing was more like a vibe check. He as the coach probably saw the deer in the headlights look from him so he started to talk to him in a way to calm him down. Idk that’s just what I always got from it
The triple look
As a former offensive lineman, that late hit om the qb at 2:17 would absolutely resulted in an immediate fight
Hard to believe the refs didn't call unsportsmanlike conduct / roughing the passer on that one as well.
Was wondering why nothing was called
I don't care what anyone says. This is a great movie. Hard to believe it's been 20 years.
Loved to movie but I could’ve gone without the Dick scene
There are better Football movies and baseball movies (imo), but this one is really great.
Hard to believe the Sharks bite in the past.
@Al Miller 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Styles
The only movie that captures both the blinding speed of the game, as well as the slow motion of being “in the zone” when everything is clicking. By far my favorite football movie because of the in-game cinematography.
Heard several people like LeBatard say the sideline view of the speed is scary and cannot be understood unless you see it . This scene tries and seems to get it
The ciematography was terrible in this movie.oliver stone was terrible. There were so many cuts in this movie. It’s insane.
@@justi139that wasn’t Oliver Stone, that was the editor
I don’t see how anyone who’s looked out of a face mask can criticize these scenes. This was the closest I ever been to being back on the field.
"RED 70 BLACK STAR!!!"- "WHAT DA FUCK IS DAT???"
AHAHAHAH...I love this movie!!!
One of the best and most realistic scenes in a sports movie.
Except for the part where 96 hits beamen like 10 secs after he handed the ball off, he would have gotten suspended for multiple games pulling some shit like that😂😂😂
@@bengodwin3541 if he do this in todays nfl they eject him fine him and suspend him at least 2 games lol
HakanGürle but I would agree with that, u can’t just go around hitting ppl that r completely out of the play and just standing watching a play develope
@@bengodwin3541 Did you ever watch the NFL in the 60s', 70s' 0r 80s'?
This movie is nothing like the real game. The fact the coach doesn't know who his 3rd string QB is alone is unrealistic. Coaches know EVERYONE on the team. Lol
"You expect me to get into a 3 pt stance in yo vomit, nigga?!"😂 1:34
Pure gold 💛💛💛
2:07 I love the lion roar they give the defensive players and the shit they talk between snaps haha! This movie has such a cool soundtrack to boot.
Him eating chips reading the paper asking what happened is my favorite shit of all time
That man was on the bench eating a bag of chips reading the newspaper 😂😂😂😂
That coach was mad about it too
Funniest scene for me 😂😂😂
And his play card on his wrist was upside down
His hat all fucked up too 😂
The part when everything is shaking like an earthquake was accurate. I remember my first time seeing that when I played college ball.
I always think of this scene when I think of a rookies overwhelming task of adapting to the speed of the pro game... not just NFL. You wait all that time for your shot, and its not easy to perform straight away.
+Darric Nelson
Yep the game is too fast at first.
That's why it's a thing called Pre Season duhh
John Gotti Pre-Season is used for players to work on technique....The speed is totally different in the regular season
Yeah, that's anything in life. You can do something your whole life on your own and do it well but then get put into an environment with other people that have been doing it professionally and it'll blow your mind...
Daisy Land great comment from a woman who for sure never played the sport ... lol true wisdom
What made this movie good was that LL Cool J and Jamie Foxx had legit beef while filming this.
From what I've heard, Jamie Foxx is a real asshole in person. A lot of other black entertainers and comedians don't like him.
Hey if he puttin on great performances in movies like Ray and Django, I don’t care.
That nigga gay thats why
Todd Knocked Eric Out in Real life on set of this 🎥
LL put Jaime to sleep
Thats how Teddy B was on the sideline chillin when Drew Brees got hurt
I'm a Saints fan and thats is what that felt like tho
That's how Winston was when Brees got hurt this year :-)
hahahhahahaha true shit
That's how Purdy was on the sideline chillin when Garoppolo got hurt again
@@tyvonesmith4757"thats is what that felt like tho" is not English.
They really nailed the immense pressure and anxiety being thrown into the fire feels like.
We need a modern football movie like this now.
society too soft
Its all different compared to now unfortunately.
I honestly think filmmakers would be scared to show african-americans in even a slightly negative light, so they wouldn't be able to make a realistic NFL movie where they drop n-bombs and stuff. Maybe one about a straight A student black trans-man overcoming a racist coach as he breaks into the NFL? Or maybe one about the first female linebacker, as she proves women can do anything men can do?
We need the NFL to be like this again
Football is soft now..the guys don’t have the edge for it to be interesting
This movie did a great job showing the hectic sideline moments. I played in school and it’s very different than what you see from the stands or TV. The coaches do speak to you like that all the time.
Oliver Stone's choice of music is super rad for an old man!!!
Oliver Stone grew up in the 60s and 70s when music was light years better then todays forgettable garbage..
Incredible OST including Overseer´s Supermoves, Bros gonna work it out (The Chemical Brothers) My Weakness (Moby) etc.
What is this song called? I've heard it so many times before
@@jongraham8396 right here right now by fatboy slim
@@pikatura_23 Haha the song I was looking for was rock and roll 2 lol I got it now thanks tho!
Classic Scene! My favorite part was when the other team was talking that SHIT at line of scrimmage. Had "Steamin" Willie Beamen straight nervous and shook 😂
Yeah and I also see roughing the passer all over the place lol but of course they don't call anything
@@kbanghart it's old school football
@@oscarf.1309 yeah but it's dramatized for the movie too
@@kbanghart No doubt lol
"you better buckle up, cuz it's gonna be long day today" classic..
There now needs to be a "Red 70 Black Star" play in every coach/Quarterback's audible package... 😂
Best sport movie ever !
So true
i like how you can hear the OC talking to him the same time the head coach is
Fun Fact: The assistant coach riding Beamen is the same coach that tells the ref (in the movie Replacements) to stop the cheerleaders from shaking their asses and distracting the team.
"C'mon Jimmy, tell em to stop shaking their asses!!!!!"
Facts 💯
He was also Lance’s head coach in The Best Man Holiday
💯
This is for me the most decorated movie of all time! So many A listers actors in one movie.
I love Pacino's double take looking at Willie before giving him the play he's like "ah fuck, this is our guy now huh?"
The really did a good job with mimicking the speed of the game
It’s funny because this is exactly how trash talk is on the football field. After the game everyone becomes buddies again lol. Damn I miss playing.
Glad I never played long-term, and glad my kids aren't either. Too many injuries.
Bc the cameras are on them lord knows how many athletes be fakin friendly talk after games, they have to protect they money and image
This movie was SO underrated!
So overlooked, but very appreciated for the brilliance this movie is.
QB Coach: I told you to warm up 5 mins ago!!!!!
Beamen: What Happened!?!? 🤣🤣🤣
2:17 Ayo ref throw the flag even NFL Blitz didn't allow hits that late lol
That had to be one of the most prettiest passes ever thrown in the game at the end of this clip… revolution indeed!!
0:54 Nick Crozier is basically like Sean McVay a young up and coming coach with a brilliant offensive mind
Or Kyle Shanahan during Atlanta
You can say that too
Easily the best Pro Football movie ever made. PERIOD.
HS: "Friday Night Lights" ("Remember the Titans" is my sentimental close second.)
College: "The Program". ("Rudy" is my sentimental favorite)
Pros: "Any Given Sunday" ("North Dallas Forty" was "Any Given Sunday" before "Any Given Sunday". )
You'd have to have fought a battle between those lines on any level to truly know that this is a masterpiece from an on/off field experience 💯
the sportscenes make this the best sportsmovie ever made to me
"What the fuck is wrong with you? I gotta get in a 3-point stance and you gonna vomit nigga?"
1:45 - 1:51.....every defense talking to Drew Brees this coming season 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmfao
And Brady!
@@captainstarkillerful howd that work out? Lol
One of the greatest sports movies of all time.
I heard that Dennis Quaid suffered from hypertension after the high amounts of workout at the gym.
Of this entire movie, the one thing that has stuck to me the most was Al Pacino's facial expression when he sees Jamie.
FapFreeFebruary great acting at its best , had to take a triple look at him . Can’t teach that in acting school
3rd string quaterback not watching game, instead eating peanuts and reading paper not aware that starting and back up QB were hurt lol. Jeez listen to QB coach and warm up, no wonder he looked scared haha.
Great soundtrackGreat acting
4:23-4:26 Such an Oliver Stone moment.
Did y'all know Diddy was supposed to play Beaman but they found out he couldn't throw a football
No
Nope.... Never heard that.
😭 Is that true?
If that's true, thank goodness. This movie elevated Jamie Foxx as more than just a comedy star, since he went toe to toe with the legendary Al Pacino
@@justaddressmeasking6625 queencitybeerleague.wordpress.com/2015/12/21/diddy-couldnt-land-the-role-of-willie-beaman-in-any-given-sunday-because-he-was-so-bad-at-throwing-a-football-that-they-sent-him-home/amp/
Any Given Sunday is a love letter to Old School, Hard Hitting, Professional Football. 1 massive hit from 1 of these 250-325 lbs Monsters could end your career or reshape your life.
Only the Toughest, Grown men can last in this environment and not get chewed up n spit out by The League, broken, physically and/or mentally.
Shut up comrade. Think we don’t see all your bad writing and mismatched playlists that make you look like a real person
“got fiends throwin up on themselves like willie beamon, any given sunday gunplays optional”
All I need
Awesome movie, and eveytime I hear Beamans speech to his coach at dinner, it all just alway to me made sense.
00:30 love the triple take
Damn man RBs be using the 3 point stance? I must be getting old or that movie is
Jamie Foxx did a good job in this movie since he played high school football - - as a quarterback as well!
Man, this game was a warmup. It don't count.
1:04 really tales the tale of Willie Beamen…it puts things in perspective because at the end of the movie he went too another team with coach Tony to make it 5 teams in 6 years. That’s wild
Extremely accurate portrayal of pro football. Much like North Dallas Forty. The next time you want to criticize your teams QB remember that this is what he sees
3:35 Dr Cox being as sarcastic as always
This movie could've easily been a "Blitz" live rendition of the game lol
Maybe not the best idea running 3 pass plays with a bench qb
My favorite movie plus with NFL legends Lawrence Taylor,Dick Butkis and the great Johnny Unitas
The look on pacino and LT's faces with the vomit is the best.
Dak Prescott probably idolizes Willie Beamen.
Derek D More like Teddy Bridgewater
No, those two have nothing in comparison. That comparison was made back in 2014.
www.sportsgrid.com/real-sports/nfl/an-nfl-executive-compared-teddy-bridgewater-to-movie-character-willie-beamen-which-makes-no-sense/
Derek D You see Dak is taller than willie beamen so it wouldn't be a great comparison between and idolizing would be more of Steve McNair than a Willie Beamen
More like Cam Newton
Matthew Richardson Jamie Foxx is actually 5’9 so that’d be about the shortest QB in the history of pro football considering 6’0 is short
Foxx actually had a cannon for an arm!! Pretty impressive actually.
HS QB that was the first in his school history to throw for 1000yd. Not a D1 stud but decent enough espc for Hollywood.
That first hit on Beaman is such a flagrant flag it's unreal
It was the 2000s its fine.
@@randomguy-xp7se nah even then it would have been a penalty. Even back then you couldn’t hit a guy out of the play. Especially the qb.
@@cjfernandez9089 probably not.
Damn this cast is STACKED
The soundtrack for this was just unreal.
The song is "Right Here, Right Now" by Fatboy Slim.
You're welcome.
It’s 2021, we have Shazam…you’re welcome.
'll cool J: "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!!!???".. LMFAO
Hands-down, the best football movie in my opinion. Unless you guys know of a better football movie, I am all ears.
2:16 best part of the scene
15 yd penalty for unnecessary roughness though😅
Red 70, Black star!!!
What the fuck is that!? xD
The subtle growl...awesome!!!
Every time I hear this song I only see the scene of joker dancing on the stairs
"You hold it all inside"
He mightve been talking bout his lunch
2:18 obviously a foul. I get you wanna make it seem tough for the new guy but at least be realistic. That's flagged 100 times outta 100.
as a former college player, not always
this was 17 years ago tough
This isn't the Nfl either, it seems like inspiration for the Blitz the League games
James Underwood I heard a lot of whistles so he probably did get an unsportsmanlike or roughing the passer penalty
That's how they got a new set of downs. Oliver Stone knew you know that so they trimmed the scene.
1:17 Calicoe Willie Beamin line
Jesus finally understood the reference
00:58 caught drinking alcohol while working ^^
Rock & Roll, Gary Glitter this perfect song for Willie Beaman.
with the threats of the defenders even I piss in my pants.
It's a shame we haven't had any movies about professional football since this film that were anywhere near its level of quality.
closest thing was the show 'Playmakers', which almost cost ESPN their NFL contract
This is the best football movie to me.
I got called for a penalty in high school talking shit like the line backers lmao
This drive shows exactly how fast the league moves. A lot of guys say I would have caught that pass…no tf you wouldn’t have because a lot of times the ball is right on you as soon as you make that cut.
The scout who left the schidtty organization recommended him. Says it all right there.
This is exactly what happened when Eagles Coach Pederson put in Sudfled against the Washington Football Team. I wish I knew how to do the face changes and voice overs. 🤣🤣
I was thinking the same. Lol
One of the funniest scenes of all time
I love this Scene! I play this scene every time my NBA 2k Rec team needs me to sub in a game cause im the 6th one in the rotation!
That hit when Willy didn’t even have the ball wouldve been a suspension in todays league.
Lol red 70 black star...."what the fuck is that, red what?" LOL
He looks like Jameis Winston with the helmet on 🤣
What is the sound called?
2:17 'Personal Foul, Defence number 96, roughing the passer. 15 yard penalty, automatic first down'
He’s play card was upside down 😂😂
This movie is ahead of it’s time, this was once when QB’s only threw the ball . This was changing the game by moving around just look @ Jaime
That triple take, like “ok the new guy…wait something’s off…a black guy at qb?”
😂😂
Awesome movie
02:15 Annnnnnnd there's an 8 game suspension for that beyond-late hit
I gotta say that any given sunday (football) and he got game (basketball) are great sport movies! I was hoping a film director would produce a boxing or wrestling movie version. It would tell a story of an upcoming sports players and what his dreams are. Anybody have any ideas?
Chess vs calicoe brought me here
