I just ordered my first opals yesterday and plan to carve them with a this method combined with some diamond coated tips for holes. After watching Justin for over a year and you for some months now, trying to watch other cutters makes me cringe, but that proved to me that I have developed a vision for what I want to do and how I want to do it. There is a very specific work of art I am aiming for as a final result far down the line, showing the concept of Positive Disintegration in the five steps described by Dabrowski. The violence of separating a piece of rock from the surroundings and then grinding away at it to reveal potetial while discarding bits that are not of value, and then combining the good bits with other good bits a couple of times should lead to a stunning piece of jewelry at the end.

Good luck on your journey. 🤞
Sandpaper away the rough and you'll be left with some interesting stones for sure.
Even if small you are 100% correct, by combining them into one piece you can still end up with an incredible piece in the end.

Great minds think alike, I was doing the exact same thing as you showed in this video. From doubling up the sand paper, to the foam or a hard wheel to cut domes and the back. I cut a bunch of nice stones doing it that way. Good stuff Roy, thanks for the videos 👍👍

Nice one Shane. It is actually a pretty nice method.
I only completely forgot about it when the diamond bits and Nova tips came in.

Great idea, thanks. I was looking for a way of smoothing out the (very rough) bowl of a spoon I was carving and one of these little DIY discs with the Dremel polishing pad behind it worked brilliantly. Seriously smooth now.

They are pretty good. sandpaper always wears out pretty quick on the dremel but does get the job done.

      No worries. Cheap is good.

i use a slightly larger flat washer and a circle of green hide leather to mount the discs on and it is flexible but stiff enough to not fold over the paper.

Yeah that sounds pretty good. Hard but a little give. Think that is a pretty good set up.

Great tip, I have bought some nova tips but they are super expensive to ship to Sweden... So this is a really nice alternative!👍 Great video as always! Keep it up!💎

Well i'm sure you can hunt down a few sheets of sandpaper so it is deffinetly worth a try and when you get the hang of it the results can be pretty good

I'll be recording a demo of the technique. Hopefully will be the next video if all goes well and I find the time.

Cracking idea roy so i thankyou! You could also glue them onto a hard leather circle to give them a bit of strength....

Yeah if you want to buy glue is a little full on. These things don't last long. You can also stack heap together and just rip them off as they get worn.

Been doing this for years but not for opal, use different thickness rubbers and plastics as a back plate😉👌🏽

Genius. Deffinetly works for more than opal cutting that's for sure.

This is excellent...I lasted a week before deciding yes I wanted to buy diamond bits but I need more....I need so.much stuff lol. Just luck that I have a tile cutter I can change up to cut stone and a reasonable grinder as well...I want to use the son inlaws big fancy wheel thats for blades and shearing gear but he would kill me🤣

Diamond bits are a world of difference and then an even bigger jump is sintered diamond burrs.
A good tile cutter with a lapidary blade can work wonders especially as a trim saw.
I still want to buy/build a lot of tool it really never ends 😄
I'm trying to work out how I can budget in some jewellery making stuff. Buying bit by bit.
