This is great, thanks for posting the follow-up along with a solution, much appreciated. Keep it up Jason 👍
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for the advice! I have the same filter and love it. But a little prep before hitting the trail is a great idea.
Totally agree!
My BeFree is still working great, I do that test before I go at least the night before. Good to hear your filter is working again.
We will see hoe much longer it works.
Thanks for the fix Huck.👌
You bet
Thanks for this personal account with the BeFree. Honestly, I've not gone out into the backcountry yet with my water filters, only on long distance bike rides where I only had to filter water from public parks and outdoor beach faucets. But, when I do, I'll very likely take both my BeFree w/ a second filter plus my Sawyer Squeeze for good measure.
Mine is clogged right now, will try your method and hopefully it will work with mine as well. big thanks!
I made a video on how to unclog them. The easiest way is to do this after every long trips.... (soaking them in DEMINERALIZED WATER) NO TAP WATER EVERRRRRR!!!! never use tap water... 30-1 hr depending how bad it is... I've been doing this for 2 years now with the same filter... never had a problem. (not distilled..demineralized) sold at any markets .... this should help :)
Thanks for the tips!!!
Had the same thing happen to my Sawyer Squeeze. I didn't test it before I left. Filled up my Vectos with water during the hike to have water for the morning. Tried to filter that water in the morning and had no flow. Thought maybe the icy cold (but not frozen) water froze up inside the filter. I had slept with the filter in my sleeping bag so I know that didn't freeze. Luckily I had just enough clean water to make some coffee and head back to the car. Tossed the Squeeze and bought another one.
Sucks when the water filters don't work out there.
Mine sucked from the moment I took it over the box. Water does not move through it at all.
I had that similar issue with the same filter. Turns out that I let the filter dry out. I was so freaked out because I had another five days on the trail. Turns out that soaking it and then squeezing the hell out of the bag finally pushed the water through. It worked great the rest of the trip (thank goodness!). Sorry you had that problem on your last trip. I am making a note to self to make sure I soak it, and it works before I head out on my next trip! Great reminder!
The second time I used it, I forgot to presoak, and we were waiting a few hours to be able to filter water.
Two is one. One is none. Always have a backup for your backup. Sawyer+tablets+boil. My dirty water bag also has adapters for both brands. Just in case.
Good tips!
I have a Sawyer, Sawyer mini, Katadyn befree, Lifestraw gravity filter... but I keep going back to my trusty reliable MSR MiniWorks ex... taste is everything to me. Worth the weight.
Still have my miniworks. I have it in an earthquake kit at the house.
Had one do this on me too. Thought about trying the vinegar idea and never did...but I will now. If that doesn't work I thought about even trying rubbing alcohol. Thanks for the reminder!
You're welcome
@@HuckOutdoors worked pretty good....not brand new, but good enough!
Hi Jason . I used a big syringe to back wash my filter after soaking it in warm water. Worked like a charm.
Befree is not meant to be backflushed and can ruin the filter.
Two hours in vinegar seems like a lot of trouble to go through. Iv never had a filter clog like that on me.
Had it also clog up bad on two different sierra trips.
Nice information! Very good things recommended here.
Hope it may work for you in the future!
is there a Part2 which goes over unclogging the damn thing....holy crap dude..
Maybe you should watch again. If shaking it does not work, check out 3:08 of the clip where I say so.
That's my favorite filter also. I have never had a problem like that! It got a little slow once, but I blew back through it and it resumed flow again. I did, however, kill mine after my last trip. I forgot to air it out and it molded. I may try that cleaning solution that you gave. It might just work! Thanks!
On no! Mold is a killer!
@@HuckOutdoors Yup!
Hey Huck! Glad to hear the flow rate came back for ya. I've seen a bunch of backpackers saying the same thing you're talking about in this video and to me the filter isn't worth it. For the amount of work you need to put in to clean this thing i'd much rather back flush a Sawyer any day. If it only costs me a few extra mins each time to filter it's a no brainer. Durability and reliability will always win out. Great video!
Usually cleaning the filter is just a shake in the creek with the BeFree. I always hating backflush my sawyer.
Really depends on where you're filtering. I had one get clogged after about 150 miles. Get a new one - you'd be surprised at how fast a new one filters. BeFree don't inspire much confidence TBH. If you disagree GOOD FOR YOU.
I'll eventually get a new one as I have the money put into the bags for it.
Stay positive 👍❤😀
Always!
I am thinking there was a lot of silt up there from the run off from the El Dorado fire up there last year. Or calcified minerals from previous hikes. Kind of like cleaning your coffee maker with vinegar.
The clogging that took place wasn't in a recent burn area. I had one clog just as bad in pristine waters of the Sierra.
A valuable lesson, no filter is free of clogging. Adapt and overcome is my motto. I am guessing Monica was the first to suggest boiling, just don't filter bugs with your socks 🤣 I personally use Sawyer, have the Squeeze and Mini. haven't tried Micro yet. a few drops of aqua mira goes a long way or even Chlorine.
Socks would have added flavor!
@@HuckOutdoors shaking my head, think I'd use a t-shirt or bandana first
@@hike2bhuman110 hahahaha!!!!
Great video. What is your go to filter now?
Still the BeFree. I was looking at the Quickdraw, but I see people have been having many of those clogging as well.
Yes, you did miss the unclog the filter part because it ain’t there. Thank you for telling us all to boil water. Can you tell us all again how you unclog your filter or you made your filter start working better?
If you would have stayed to the end of the video at 3:14 you would have saw how. ;)
😂
I will stand by my Sawyer squeeze! Fast flow means nothing if it clogs easy....Just my opinion :-) Plus you can back flush it on site.
Back flushing helped some on my squeeze, but the flows sucked after that.
Oh, another thing or two. Katadyn claims that the BeFree can only filter 1000 Liters where the Squeeze can do about 100k Gals. The replacement is like $25 and the threading is not universal like the squeeze. Thanks for the " How to clean the filter" though. Good to know.
I have 3 bags made for the Katadyn.
So how did you fix the bad filter?
You can soak it in vinegar.
Yup bad attitude doesnt help anything. build quality on katadyn is shit, I had my old pump style bust on me. Sawyer squeeze has never failed me cause you can backflush it to clear it up.
My last one froze on baldy.
@@HuckOutdoors just put it in your armpit a while lol
So wait u still didn't tell us how to clean the filter
If shaking it does not work, check out 3:08 of the clip where I say so.
I'm not suprised you clogged it.. you trying to filter mud through it... its best for "clean looking" water, not that muddy sh$& you show here
That's mud? Hahaha the cnoc bag is discolored from years of use.
