These watermelon look a lot like the sugar baby melons the Mennonites grow and sell here in Pennsylvania and Maryland. They are the sweetest variety I've tasted. And I've been to 140 different countries around the world. Btw, Black Diamond watermelons are in the same family as Sugar Baby watermelons. It is known for its firm texture, very sweet taste, and dark green/black coloring. Also, they are mostly round and not the normal oblong shape as regular watermelons. This was explained to me by my friend and nearby neighbor, a Mennonite farmer.
I don't think that care and dedication make for that high price. I just that Japaneze can be extremely excentrics. Out there are people that work 10 time harder and won't get even 5% of that price for their products.

@@TheBaldr Yeah but this is a different variety not a novelty, the flavor on these is similar to a very ripe yellow/orange flesh watermelon. (there is a decent amount of species so no point in naming one) It's quite good, it's like a watermelon meets a cantaloupe. (Rockmelon)

Not always true. There are plenty of places in Japan to get cheap fruit. But specialty fruit is more common because they can upsell it as a gift item. Or something to be enjoyed by the wealthy. About 300 types. I have 40 different types of watermelon seeds. Im going to grow at least 20 varieties this year. Orange, yellow, red, white fleshed watermelon. I have a yellow flesh yellow rind one also.
There are cheap fruits being sold in japan. These expensive ones are only for special occasions for those that can afford it, not really for daily basis eating

I'm sorry but I've seen and tasted $1 watermelons that are so much sweeter and appetizing than those overpriced black watermelons. So disappointed to see after they opened the blackwater melon only to reveal a super pale red colour with some scattered seeds here and there. I will not even pay $5 for that, like seriously.
@@Monmon-vo7vv I don't need to try it, just the pale red colour alone is enough to turn me off. They could polish the outside all they want but at the end of the day, it's what's inside that matters. Ofcourse I admire the dedication and passion of those farmers growing it, but cmmon as a consumer, that is so not worth it. I think people would just buy it for prestige more than anything. I'm sure if you do a blind tasting, people would not even know the difference taste wise, and would be put-off as well by the unappetizing colour.
I really hate the attitude that it must be perfectly shaped and pristine to go to consumer. If the imperfect ones are sold as well, less food waste would occur and maybe these things would be affordable. It’s not just these fancy watermelons…. All fruit does this. And they waste sooo much food cuz it isn’t round or perfectly shaped but is still perfectly edible
