Had the exact same experience today. Listed a car at trade price (over 10 years old and didn’t fancy retailing it) some guy came to look over it, checked all over like a retail customer, under the bonnet, service book etc and then asked for a quick test drive to check all is okay. To which I replied ermmm there’s no test drives on an a trade price car. It’s a trade price for a reason, take it or leave it. Flipping wanna be trader, didn’t even bring his trade plates as he said he didn’t think he’d need them.
James, a top tip. If the guy does contact you, you could hire a guy I use-not often-but from time to time. Their details are, ASSASSNATIONS INC, HOMICIDE LANE KILLERTON DEATHERTONSHIRE UR1 R1P Hope this helps? Alan B (Notts)
You can sell a car to a Ltd company and providing the company buyer isn’t motor trade related the consumer rights act still applies - case law on this exists for this particularly the van sales to companies etc it’s UDTD versus some freight forwarder fyi sale of goods act still applies
That’s what you get for being a decent upstanding human being and dealer. I would say this guy has done his homework on your channel and thought he could do a number on you. Annoying but you will have and deserve better James. A good lesson to us all thank you.
If you can afford the road fund license and the petrol that they love. you have got a reliable car albeit an unsophisticated one , high profile tyres that are standard fit absorb potholes very well as a result the grand vitara is very comfortable ride .for winter I had snow tyres fitted then they become unstoppable on snow
Been in the car trade for 40 years this year why do people think are time is free and it's the same when people say can you keep the car to the weekend for me I 100% want it and that is why I say first come first served
Had that happen to me years ago. Sold my decrepit 1992 Chevrolet Lumina for $150 US, put a for sale sign on it and shoved it to the curb. Guy comes by says he'll take it and I told him several times AS-IS I wouldn't even drive this down the street, it runs but beyond that couldn't tell you. He says okay I understand. Next day I get an irate phone call from this guy saying the car broke down 1400 miles away in Colorado and he wants a refund and me to pay to tow it, said he has friends who are cops. I hung up and blocked the number, never heard from him again thank god. Luckily I made him sign in triplicate a bill of sale that said AS-IS NO warranty car is for scrap, some people are not on the same planet as us...
You are too nice mate. At the point he asked about mot advisories being done I would’ve said no thanks that isn’t how it works. I know what it is like when you have put time into it and want to seal a deal though!
I sold a cheap px from our showroom for £350 years ago, to a woman who wanted a cheap run around, she left a snotty message on the answerphone the next morning, saying she was disappointed with the car, as she had found some cigarette butts in the ashtray and a scratch on the hubcap, I phoned her back and told her not too worry and to bring the car back and I would refund her money, as I was disappointed I had not retailed it for £695, She changed her attitude immediately and said she wasn't really complaining and was made up with the little car 🤣
Same in the cycle trade. People do not understand that time is money and your knowledge is valuable. After 10 years I’m starting to spot the time wasters now 😂
Do you have to be a car trader to buy trade? I thought it applied to any business to business sale? I help run a campsite and we get customers like this as well. I like to be helpful but you can't give someone an hour of your time for a £40 booking. People think running a campsite is basically free whereas realistically the margins are really tight and they only work because they are a family business and people basically work for next to nothing.
An opportunity to weed out the time-wasters by changing how you deal with "dealers". As soon as they say they want a trade deal, just ask them to supply all their trade information first before you'll discuss a trade sale.
Glad to have retired some years ago but when I received this sort of call, my first response was always, dont the think we've done any business before have we? So whats your motor trade trading title and address, funnily enough was usually end of call !
@mightywatcher5894 second hand there next to nothing. I sold mine on e Bay it went for 99p mk1 focus estate. Got £60 for the one that came off the mk2 focus hatchback.
Always best to follow your gut, especially if confident it will sell to someone else quickly. Was that guy Walter Mitty? Nice Vitara but seems odd to do tyres and MOT advisories, etc, and then P/Ex it.
No point buying a new towbar for an old car, usually loads for sale 2nd had on gumtree and eBay at a fraction of the new price. I paid £100 for a fully detachable/invisible when ball is removed with fold down electrics and fitted it myself. Retail on that bar was around £500 +£100 for the electrics. All the mounting holes were already in place on the car (2014 2.4 Grand Vitara 5 door) It wasn't hard to fit.
I buy bikes for trade use and have never approached anyone on that bassis, although I have done repeated deals with people after an innitial experience of buying from them. I have never understood why being a one off customer it makes any difference to anyone if one or both, neither of you are in the trade. If it gets mentioned it's normally to swap stories about dealing with the public, after the deal has been done.
Probably. Back in the 90's you used to get a lot of vehicle sales on "trade terms" - which essentially meant no comeback. Some unscrupulous dealers would even leave that out until the deal was all but done, then slip it into the paperwork. The gearbox fell out 2 days later and "sorry. Trade sale. Read 'em and weep". There's a bit more to it these days ...
Thats the way it was years ago...anybody could buy from the " back lot " . on the understanding . Bought as seen., " I dont want to see it back ". Cash. ! ...and as a little earner, mecanics would bring home , sell of driveway..
Simple as; Retail Sale: you are buying something to get you around. Trade sale: you are buying something to attempt to make money on. Why is this hard to grasp?
You need strong nerves to be a dealer in cars for sure. There are so many pitfalls yet we all think you make a fortune out of us buyers. Anyway, thanks for the tip about Topdon and I have ordered one as I have a new car a Focus Titanium estate 150Hp diesel 2017 only done 44500 , it the miles are correct.!. Bought from a RUclips dealer actually so I hope so.
The guy was a shylock, just trying to get the car on the cheap . . . The tow bar capper was just his way of trying to weasel his way out because he wasn't able to meet the trader criteria . . . Hope it sells to a lovely punter for a fair dollar !! As you say, they are popular in your neck of the woods, so it should go quick !! 👍
oh james i am a private buyer and when i have done my homework and checked the car i do say i am serious buyer and never not bought the car like i say i am not a trader just check before i waste some ones time
I had hassle with a certain "trade buyer" in Edinburgh. As luck would have it he had been round putting car wanted leaflets on a Rover 75 diesel just down the road from me , so I phoned him , put on a thick Glasgow accent and offered him my rover for £150 if he could pick it up this afternoon. Taking the bait he zoomed over to the address he must have googled, pulling up beside the gatehouse of the Cemetery near Marchmont , we watched in hysterics as he went to the door and asked for Mr Grieve 😂 who is selling the immaculate Rover undertakers car outside. Peep peep ya fud as we went past him in the van as he rang our number repeatedly no doubt to express his disappointment 😥🎉🎉

Stop whinging that is part of the game. 😘 🤗 I like your content, James. Except, getting free repairs is not the kind of favorable reputation for a dealer, is it? 🤔
Free repairs? He's always going on about the mechanics he uses and the bills he gets. He lost hundreds on a POS Yaris the other day by letting a mechanic have it cheap.
Had the exact same experience today. Good decision to retail it, those Grand Vitaras are ultra reliable and it'll give someone yesrs of motoring. Doesn't look its age at all does it!

Yes they would

I bet , be first knocking door when wiper blades goes
£400-600 for a tow bar sounds around the standard cost - he would have to pay that whatever car he purchased.
I thought so too
@mightywatcher5894 bet that's not a fitted price. They're always £300 upwards fitted!
Your regular mechainc should,nt ever charge you £ 300 / £ 400. You buy the bar...
@mightywatcher5894 second hand there next to nothing. I sold mine on e Bay it went for 99p mk1 focus estate. Got £60 for the one that came off the mk2 focus hatchback.
Had one put on my Freelander 2 about 5 years back and that was 275ish so I would be surprised if you could get one done for £100.
I’d say motorbikes attract even more dreamers…maybe not the ‘trader’ types, but in general.
Always best to follow your gut, especially if confident it will sell to someone else quickly. Was that guy Walter Mitty? Nice Vitara but seems odd to do tyres and MOT advisories, etc, and then P/Ex it.

Dont get much change out of £400/500 on getting a towbar fitted with all the electrics mounting points and so on on any car
Yes my thoughts too
