Love seeing these two friends and great song writers perform together. Bruce was so eloquent when he inducted Jackson in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their mutual admiration shows here. This is a show I would have loved to have seen.
My husband's band opened for JB several times . He says JB was all class...to everyone, stage mgrs , security, lighting, audio... every one! This is a great show with the boss! Thank you JB.
Jackson is just that way. He came from out of no where and the depths so he not only knows respect when he sees it, he extends it. He is with no doubt, ALL class ALL the time. And Bruce? Hell, he's just your guy next door. No false airs. ROCK ON!! I can recall many long nights and days wheeling up and down I-90 and the I-5 corridor listening to both. It never failed , coming off the off ramp in 12th high and having this just blarin over that CAT engine. That, was a real time.
If you don’t love this...wow...they have this beautiful respect and true admiration for each other...of course... two rock poets who share their hopes with you and me.
ASTOUNDING!!! That's a helluva surprise visitor, but then again they were in East Rutherford...They sound awesome together...GREAT POST!!!!!! And, as someone who has been blessed to see BRUCE at least 5 times live...BBRRRRRUUUUUCCCCEEE!
a fantastic collaberation! Springsteen always add a rich flavor when he performs cover songs. plus, people tend to forget what a great guitarist he is.
They became friends when Bruce agreed to play at the "No Nukes" concert in 1979. That concert was organized by MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), a group Jackson co-founded with Bonnie Raitt and others. Bruce's performance at No Nukes is legendary. Oh, and of course the crowd is calling out "Bruuuuccceee!"
Watching this video is a true joy... it seems that Jackson and Bruce, along with the band, truly was having a good time performing!!! This is what music is all about! Dam, I wish I had some musical talent, because this type of "high" must be out of this world!! In my dreams I am one bad ass performer, that these gentleman and their bands, that has been blessed with!!
I am now 50 years young !!! This song STIIL MOVES ME !!!! I BOUGHT THE RUNNING ON EMPTY ALBUM WHEN I WAS 16 !!! I STILL GET SO EMOTIONAL EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO ANY SONG FROM THIS ALBUM ♡♡♡.
i cant agree more!!! This album is the best EVER !!! as far as i am concerned, I am 52, my brother bought it in vinilo when it came out (in Spain I believe it was 1979, I was 12 years old then...I liked it so much back then, and over the years and over the decades, I keep on being blown away in every song...I listen the full album many times every year, I have it on cd as well, on my mp3 to listen on the beach, and i think I must have given it as a present 7 or 9 times.....at least. But if i had to choose a moment, it would be when rosemary sings her line in Stay...I have to rewind it 5 times...because I die when she cries "LONGEEEEEERRR"
Nice raw clip of two great rockers ! It looks to me like they did not rehearse and seem to be discussing the parts and changes before and throughout the song. And they pulled it off great ! I gave it a 4/5 !
I would love to have this version of the song on my ipod. I already love the song, but Bruce makes it even better with his voice. Incredible and thanks for sharing.
It's no coincidence that Bo Dylan ( a hero to both Bruce and JB) chose the name partly to honor Dylan Thomas who is known for writing in his poem; "Do not go gentle into that good night, Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
All the recent biographies revel that these 2 have a long history. Sometimes the music business tears people apart. Its good to see them here jamming and playing together!
I am experiencing a little bit of heaven! BRUCE BRUCEBRUCE....has gotten me through some rough times, and I'm big JB fan. I wondered if they knew each other....I don't watch videos normally. So, I am pleasantly surprised! Together...may be too much for my heart!
I don't know if some of you get this at all. These two guys go back years and years together. They are both the bones in the beginning if rockin roll in the very beginning. Jackson goes as far back as the folk music Era. Awesome musicians both!
They're both about the same age as my dad and uncle----both of them are guitarists who played on stage together in MUCH smaller venues when they were younger. The love of playing together is on their faces----and on my dad's and my uncle's.
These guys ought to tour together their voices are made for each other and they are both great writers of the American experience. I would love to hear the Boss do The Pretender.
Just saw JB two weeks ago - 71 years old and he's still totally got it. The concert had all his trademarks - performing with the opening act (they did "Mohammed's radio" ) - forgetting lyrics (in "Running On Empty" he used the line "69 I was 21 and I called the road my own" in two different verses) - and a two-hour long set. I was lucky enough to be at the Merriweather Post Pavilion concert in 1977 when he recorded this song live for the album - he did two nights there but I'm pretty sure the show I was at was the one they recorded.
We do the ame thing for Bruce Homeboy (Hornsby) in Southeast VA whenever he's introduced and trust me, he's played with everyone if he was home in Williamsburg. Coincidentally, when Jackson played the Ferguson Center on the CNU campus 10/17/12 he brought Bruce out for a couple of songs. They were fantastic together and I hope someone got footage. I, unfortunately, forgot my camcorder and had planned on smuggling it in like the good old days with Jack Daniels and good bud!
I was lucky enough to be at the show in 1977 where he recorded this (and "The Load-Out/Stay") for the album. Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. It was late August, I had just graduated and my girlfriend had just come back to town for the start of the new school year. Awesome. What's even better is that all these 43 years later, he's still got it.
I appreciate the love and support by my fans, I am blessed with such a fan following, they always motivate me to do the best. There love is my inspiration and there loves make me feel good about myself! All thanks to them, LOVE THEM ALL. Are you one of my great fans out there…?

this is great. so is neil and paul doing a day in the life. also the load out with jackson close up. what a rich colorful music history these giants have given us. used to go to his concerts in the late 60's and early 70's. went to see jackson at amoeba records last summer and he looked straight at me the whole concert. it actually got embarrassing. just saw/heard him and david at the bridge school concerts last week with neil. so fine.
I was at the Merriweather Post Pavilion for that show. I drove down from Philly and, in those days without Mapquest or GPS, I have no idea how I even found the place.
they are both talented musicians in their own ways and are great friends to be able to understand they are different yet both love music and admire eachother's work. Their knowledge and understanding far surpass your negative, biased, ignorace
On this day in 1977 {August 27th} at a concert in the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD Jackson Browne recorded "Running On Empty" and "Stay/The Load-Out"... Four months later on December 6th the "Running On Empty" album was released, which contained the above two versions... The album peaked at #3 on Billboard's Top 200 Album chart, while on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart "Running On Empty" reached #11 and "Stay/The Load-Out" peaked at #20... Basically the 2 artists that defined my late teens and early 20's unbelievable
Both these guys rock, but together now that's something else!!!!!!!!!

This song speaks volumes, especially since its live with The Bruce Springsteen. I remember being 17 and yes, I was always running on empty haha.
OMG!
can you imagine being at this concert
go to see jackson browne
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN comes onstage
AND THEY PLAY RUNNING ON EMPTY
unbelievable
Two of my very favorites
Two distinctive singing styles.
Bruce rough
Jackson melodic.
Thank you so much for these post. Two heroes of mine. Wow.
this video rocks! one for the books............
Another one in the RUclips history archives!!!😀😀😀😀😀
This is such a funny duo. Browne begins by singing in his smooth voice and then Springsteen comes in with his classic gravelly voice. It's awesome!
Jackson Brown was and is loved by all his piers and fans alike a real gentleman
Listen to the pops from the crowd , The Boss gets when he sings his parts..gives me the good chills !
